Snapshot files and delta

Hello!

I have a delicate problem with snapshots and delta files. We use a Backup Excel 2010, to make a backup of the machine.

No I have 110 00000 X - delta.vmdk files if I navigate on the storage. customer vShpere do not appear any snapshot and file vmx (see below) are pointing to the master file (virtuellmaskin). If you read about this error what VMware says that you can delete all files from delta. I moved all the files in the delta and tried to start the machine NO GO. I deleted all files ctk that was created.

I tried to make a snapshot of the manual and still delete problems

Nope - just right-click the virtual machine and choose "clone".

No need to go on the back model. .

  • Help on the snapshot files and delta

    Hello

Last night, does not have an ArcServe backup on a single virtual machine.  Not the end of the world, that has happened before.

This morning, received an alert from a script that I coded to look for * delta * files on our data store.  A delta file has been abandoned here. We have to drive on this machine and the file only delta remained for one of these discs. Usually, all I have to do is create a new snapshot, delete all snapshots and everything returns to normal.  This time, the Delta stayed there.

So I tried to create another snapshot option (with suspend it), as mentioned in the vmware.  He failed (Timed out).  Damn now I stuck out there for all of our disc delta files.  Tried again with the options suspend like 10 minutes after.  Works.  Delete all snapshots, works, but still stuck with these delta files.

OK, the thing is all these 00000?-files delta does not appear to be used, as the modification date remained at the time of the snapshot.

And also, the .vmx file doesn't seem to point to the delta files.  Then maybe I could safely remove?

    Here is some info.

    Thank you!!!

Indeed, it looks like some files are orphans. If it is possible to turn off the virtual machine for a short period, I would say that you do this, then move the hard orphaned directory and power on the virtual machine again. If everything works, delete the subdirectory, including files. What I found useful is RVTools that reports these files as "Zombies".

  • Recreate .vmx and vmdk file and merging instant discriptor

    Hi all

I'm under ESXi 5.0 and miss me the vmx file descriptor of a particular virtual machine.

The machine works fine until I stopped him. Off, I will not be able to restart it before I recreated the descriptor file and created a new .vmx.

The only files that are located in the folder of the virtual machine are:

    -rw - 1 root root 23152713728 Sep 19 22:43 TS1-000001 - delta.vmdk

    -rw - 1 root root 0 Sep 19 22:14 TS1 - b4014f27.vswp

    -rw - 1 root root 80530636800 Sep 19 22:38 TS1 - flat hard

    -rw - 1 root root 20166422528 Sep 19 22:14 TS1_1-000001 - delta.vmdk

    -rw - 1 root root 107374182400 Sep 19 23:03 TS1_1 - flat hard

    -rw - 1 root root 0 Sep 19 22:09 vmx-TS1-3019984679 - 2.vswp

I was able to recreate the disk descriptor file and attach it to a new VM created with the same characteristics as the former.

It will start, the only problem is that the disc does not contain the latest data from the snapshot. So it is pretty useless now.

So my question is: what steps should I follow (and when) to merge the Flash disk with a parent?

I have a backup of the vmdk unmodified and the snapshot files listed above.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

    Thanks in advance.

Sources: lack vmx and vmware.log file and VMware KB: Re-create a missing virtual machine disk descriptor file

    Welcome to the community,

snapshots are used in channels, i.e. you must re-create the instant string for each of the two virtual drives (see attached hard files) and make sure the .vmx file points to the latest snapshots.

An easy way to recover would be to create a new virtual machine with the VM current name "TS1" and two virtual disks (virtual disks size doesn't really count) and create a snapshot. Then replace the hard the new virtual machine with the file descriptor files in the attachment of this post and the hard delta/flat files.

If you want to do differently - that is with manually editing the virtual machine's .vmx file - make sure you relaod the configuration after editing the file (seehttp://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026043)

  • Do not take a snapshot - file already exists

I'm taking a snapshot on a virtual computer and receive a "file already exists question."

If I look at the structure of the computers folder virtual there are non - 0000.vmdk which I guess means there are no snapshots.

However, I see a lot of vmsn files, probably 20 of them.

NetBackup fails this virtual machine every night, that's how I picked up the snapshot cannot be created

    Help, please

In my view, only the Delta file is the question. Durning an instant creation, that this file is created, after deleting this file should be gone.

Then when it tries to create this file when snapshot, he sees already exist and so give the error "the file exists."

Somehow this file gave me, but you can delete this file and all the files of vmsn.

    concerning

Please allow points if you find this useful/correct

  • The size of the Snapshot file?

OK, I know this is a question that has probably been asked a thousand times, but I'm still confused...

Lets say I have a 10 GB vmdk file I took multiple snapshots. Instantane1 is/3 GB, snap2 is 6 GB and snap3 is 8 GB. I have delete all snapshots to merge them into the original vmdk.

Snap3 merges with snap2 snap2 more, snap2 them merged with 1 instantane1 which finally merges with the vmdk origin more. I get that part, but I now see a 17 GB vmdk on the original file

Or when 3 merges with 2 it merges only the differences between files 2 delta, then 2 does the same thing with 1 which would increase the amount of used space on the vmdk, but can not grow the overall size of the vmdk origin?

don't forget instant not record changes on the basic disk, so when you consolidate snapshots they will make the changes on the basic disk and it won't ever larger that its size said, in your example, it would be 10 GB

  • View files and directories on a remote system (RIO) on a host (PC)

    Hello

Please assume that we discuss software based on the example of standard project "Labview FPGA control on Compact RIO." The host is an initiation LV14 ongoing fall of running PC, the remote system is a sbRIO-9636 having a USB HDD and SD card. The objective is the control of the process. The control process is not relevant to the question.

That question is on the implementation of the following functionality: the user operates a host running a user Labview vi (UI Main.vi) the interface locally on the host computer. Part of this vi should offer the user built in dialogue (some express vi or another) or custom dialog (a vi to measure on request). The dialogue should display the directories and files on the remote system that is running RT Main.vi and it must allow the user to select a single XML file on the remote system (which contains generic configuration information). The file name is passed then to the remote system and the remote system will act to open and fill out a few configuration variables.

I'm sure that a widely used solution exists for this problem but I have not found the right words to type in my favorite search engine and yet to produce the result. I propose the following:

    (1) the user clicks on a button "select config file" Main.vi UI

    (2) the place of event loop UI Main.vi a message on the main message queue of the UI based on the event value caused by the modifier key

    (3) the UI Main.vi enqueues message loop a separate message on the stream from the network "user interface control flow '.

    (4) the Main.vi RT, RT loop - UI Commands.vi Subvi receives the message from the stream and places it on the message Main.vi RT queue

    (5) the message Main.vi RT loop performs some functions to read disk, directories and filenames of the RT system structures

    (6) name of file and directory (5) data are converted to a variant and went with an appropriate message in the network of RT writer stream

    (7) the Main.vi UI periodically reads the stream network of RT writer (it's in the 'monitoring loop') and place the message received (6) in the queue of messages in the user interface

    (8) the message queue of the user interface main filled the main façade of the UI with the data

    (9) the user selects the directory and the file they want and click on an ok"" button.

    (10) the causes of button click ok the event loop of the main UI to place a message in the queue of messages of UI Main.vi due to the expectancy value change on the ok button

    (11) the places UI Message Loop a message on the stream from the network "User interface control flow" with the selected file name of the selected file as the data (stored as Variant)

    (12) the RT Main.vi, RT loop - UI Commands.vi Subvi receives the message from the stream and places it on the message Main.vi RT queue

    (13) the RT Main.vi message loop opens the XML file and populated the appropriate variables with the configuration options that are there.

The user must be able to cancel the dialog and avoid using a configuration file, but I have not delt with it here.

    Now for the questions:

    (1) is this a logical approach?

    (2) are there any suggestions for a better way?

    (3) all links to pre-written code that will allow to me impliment all or a part of this with minimal effort (I am referring to dialog bit rather than the forest of streams and events network as these structures still exist and have a lot of custom code in them)?

    Thank you

    James

I do something like that, but as the interaction of the user on the host, I keep the Configuration files also on the host.  This saves a few steps:

    • Host opens VI of dialogue saying "Choose Configuration file", pointing to the location designated on the host.
    • The user selects a Configuration file.
    • Host bed data packets to send to remote files.
    • The host sends Message 'Configuration' with the previous step Configuration data remotely.
    • Remote control receives the message and any Configuration configures automatically, possibly to send message 'I'm Ready' return home.

All I/o file consists of the host, and only a single host remote message must be sent.

  • standby of the comments file system create two snapshot files

Why would or should suspend the comments file system create two snapshot files.

In our environment, we have the following VMDK.

    Syntest.VMDK

    Syntest_1.VMDK

    Syntest_2.VMDK

    Syntest_3.VMDK

    Syntest_4.VMDK

When I create a snapshot that suspends the comments file system it creates two syntest_1 - 000001.vmdk and syntest_1.000002.vmdk (as well as all of the files for snapshots).  Here is a screenshot.

    syntest.png

Why and is at - it something wrong?   I can find a ton of articles on stereotypes, but nothing that speaks.

We are currently on ESXi 5.1.0,1157734.

    Thank you

    Mike

Out of curiosity. Are two snapshots created even when you create the snapshot manually?

With backup applications, this behavior is not uncommon. The first snapshot is created for the virtual machine write them changed data, while the current is/instant backup, and the second snapshot is created by the backup software to attach the virtual disk basic to the host/proxy backup as "independent - not persistent. Once the virtual disk is disconnected from the proxy the second snapshot will be discarded and then the first snapshot will be validated for the basic disk.

CBT information should not be reset somehow, but updated as changed during the backup data.

  • Recover a VMDK Snapshoted file

I have a very big problem and I don't know how to deal with and that's it:

VM working, I have just two files and the others have disappeared:

    SPSDEV01.VMDK

    SPSDEV01 - 000001.vmdk

And the problem is obvious: when I create a new virtual machine and represent a like a hard drive, it does not contain my returned files

If represent the other he says that there is no such thing as parent file

    So, what should I do?

I'm really in a very bad situation.

Is it possible to combine or merge these files or extract files from them?

You said the "SPSDEV01.vmdk" appears in the .vmx file, but in the file attached, it is "SPSDEV01 - 000001.vmdk '!

In any case, here are the steps that I would recommend to create a new virtual disk, so that the current files will not get affected.

    • the virtual machine power off
    • Edit 'SPSDEV01 - 000001.vmdk' and set the value of 'parentCID' to the base value of the disk (SPSDEV01.vmdk) "CID" to repair the chain instant
    • Create a new subdirectory in the folder of the virtual machine named for example "Clone".
    • from the command line in the folder of the virtual machine, run:
      vmkfstools-i SPSDEV01 - 000001.vmdk Clone\SPSDEV01.vmdk
to clone the virtual drive - including his snapshot - in a new virtual disk.

Create a new virtual machine and once done, move the virtual disk cloned to the new virtual computers folder, and then open the virtual machine settings and replace the virtual disk with the cloned. Now try to turn on the virtual machine.

Before using the production server, I would recommend that you run chkdsk for all readers to solve any problems with the file system.

  • Rename a vmdk file and move it

situation: a guest VM o/s is corrupt.  The virtual machine has a second VMDK file that contains the data.   Need to build a new virtual machine with the same naming convention.   Power off the VM origin with disk virtual corrupt system.  Removed from the inventory.   Then I recreated another virtual machine with a good guest o/s.   Now, I need set the data disk, but the label for this VMDK is exactly the same as the original system disk.   So the question is: can I rename the original data VMDK file and move it to the virtual machine created as a second virtual disk without problems?   Thank you.

Each virtual disk consists of two files, the file hard small header/descriptor and the file data (flat file or delta). For the rename command, you provide the name of file descriptor only.

  • Delete the snapshot files

I have a Windows 7 VM running on an Intel Mac computer. The size of the VM folder is about 280 GB. A large part of this weight belongs to the snapshot files. I copied the Windows 7 VM on a real Windows 7 machine and its opening perfectly using the VM player and everything works fine.

All I want to do is the snapshot of the files detected, because it takes a lot of space on my disk. I can do by the player, or what I need to do this on the Mac where it all started?

Thank you in advance for your help!

After going through the Menus you see snapshot commands?, no!

While you can run a Virtual Machine that has Snapshots in VMware Player you can only manipulate them with Instances of the ACE.

    Otherwise, some options are...

Add a second virtual hard drive and clone the existing to the new and then swap the VHD on.

Use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and create a new Virtual Machine from the existing.

Install VMware Workstation and use it to delete snapshots.

Install the SDK for the VMware virtual disk and vmware-vdiskmanager allows to create a new hard to replace existing ones.

Back to VMware Fusion and delete snapshots.

  • Not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine

We have Win 2003 virtual machine running on ESXi 4.0.0 261974. The virtual machine has two vmdk files. We had taken the snapshot a few days back and today by mistake, we have removed one of the vmdk (DB - srv - 000001.vmdk - snapshot file). Now, we are not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine. When tried to add the existing vmdk, it displays only the source disk (DB - srv.vmdk). Please, help us to solve this problem.

The GUI allows only adding the base vmdk. To add the Flash disk, you must manually change the vmx file. Registrations for the formerly removed virtual disk could still exist in the vmx file with... .present = "FALSE". After changing the vmx file you must reload the configuration. To do this, remove the VM of the inventory and add it back again (right-click on the vmx file).

Is there a way to move the snapshot files to some other hard disk partition?

I'm running out of space on my hard drive partition wherer my VM resides, only option I have available is to remove my shot, I don't want to.

    Any suggestion?

You must edit the vmdk and vmx - if it works by simply changing the vmx you do something I don't understand ;-)
