The size of the Snapshot file?

OK, I know this is a question that has probably been asked a thousand times, but I'm still confused...

Lets say I have a 10 GB vmdk file I took multiple snapshots. Instantane1 is/3 GB, snap2 is 6 GB and snap3 is 8 GB. I have delete all snapshots to merge them into the original vmdk.

Snap3 merges with snap2 snap2 more, snap2 them merged with 1 instantane1 which finally merges with the vmdk origin more. I get that part, but I now see a 17 GB vmdk on the original file

Or when 3 merges with 2 it merges only the differences between files 2 delta, then 2 does the same thing with 1 which would increase the amount of used space on the vmdk, but can not grow the overall size of the vmdk origin?

don't forget instant not record changes on the basic disk, so when you consolidate snapshots they will make the changes on the basic disk and it won't ever larger that its size said, in your example, it would be 10 GB

  • Delete the snapshot files

I have a Windows 7 VM running on an Intel Mac computer. The size of the VM folder is about 280 GB. A large part of this weight belongs to the snapshot files. I copied the Windows 7 VM on a real Windows 7 machine and its opening perfectly using the VM player and everything works fine.

All I want to do is the snapshot of the files detected, because it takes a lot of space on my disk. I can do by the player, or what I need to do this on the Mac where it all started?

Thank you in advance for your help!

After going through the Menus you see snapshot commands?, no!

While you can run a Virtual Machine that has Snapshots in VMware Player you can only manipulate them with Instances of the ACE.

    Otherwise, some options are...

Add a second virtual hard drive and clone the existing to the new and then swap the VHD on.

Use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and create a new Virtual Machine from the existing.

Install VMware Workstation and use it to delete snapshots.

Install the SDK for the VMware virtual disk and vmware-vdiskmanager allows to create a new hard to replace existing ones.

Back to VMware Fusion and delete snapshots.

  • Not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine

We have Win 2003 virtual machine running on ESXi 4.0.0 261974. The virtual machine has two vmdk files. We had taken the snapshot a few days back and today by mistake, we have removed one of the vmdk (DB - srv - 000001.vmdk - snapshot file). Now, we are not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine. When tried to add the existing vmdk, it displays only the source disk (DB - srv.vmdk). Please, help us to solve this problem.

The GUI allows only adding the base vmdk. To add the Flash disk, you must manually change the vmx file. Registrations for the formerly removed virtual disk could still exist in the vmx file with... .present = "FALSE". After changing the vmx file you must reload the configuration. To do this, remove the VM of the inventory and add it back again (right-click on the vmx file).

  • How to move the snapshot file

Is there a way to move the snapshot files to some other hard disk partition?

I'm running out of space on my hard drive partition wherer my VM resides, only option I have available is to remove my shot, I don't want to.

    Any suggestion?

You must edit the vmdk and vmx - if it works by simply changing the vmx you do something I don't understand ;-)

  • Help on the snapshot files and delta

    Hello

Last night, does not have an ArcServe backup on a single virtual machine.  Not the end of the world, that has happened before.

This morning, received an alert from a script that I coded to look for * delta * files on our data store.  A delta file has been abandoned here. We have to drive on this machine and the file only delta remained for one of these discs. Usually, all I have to do is create a new snapshot, delete all snapshots and everything returns to normal.  This time, the Delta stayed there.

So I tried to create another snapshot option (with suspend it), as mentioned in the vmware.  He failed (Timed out).  Damn now I stuck out there for all of our disc delta files.  Tried again with the options suspend like 10 minutes after.  Works.  Delete all snapshots, works, but still stuck with these delta files.

OK, the thing is all these 00000?-files delta does not appear to be used, as the modification date remained at the time of the snapshot.

And also, the .vmx file doesn't seem to point to the delta files.  Then maybe I could safely remove?

    Here is some info.

Indeed, it looks like some files are orphans. If it is possible to turn off the virtual machine for a short period, I would say that you do this, then move the hard orphaned directory and power on the virtual machine again. If everything works, delete the subdirectory, including files. What I found useful is RVTools that reports these files as "Zombies".

Yes. The reason why you need to take another cliché is only in order to activate the clear all"" button. Because we don't need the memory, you can take the snapshot without it.

  • The snapshot files exist on the data store, but not in the Snapshot Manager

I searched for a question of space on one of our virtual machines throughout the morning.  I finally found that the virtual machine has two snapshot files (total of 120 GB) on the data store.

    http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/9724/screenshot.1.jpg

The problem is that these pictures are not in the snapshot

space and keep everything in tact?

    Thank you all.

  • Maximum size of the VMDK file we can assign during the P2V?

    Hello.

We conduct P2V for a server physical and would like to address one of the disk for P2V.

Rather than extend the VMDK disk in the future, we would like to extend during P2V.  Given that VMDK file maximum size is 2 TB for ESXi host, we can assign 2 TB for this VMDK file OR there is a recommended maximum size to use?

    Thank you

I have myself yet, but I guess you should be able to assign the maximum size of virtual disk, depending on the block size of the data store (for ESXi versions before the 5.x/VMFS-5). That said, I suggest that you don't assign it more than 2 032 GB in order to create snapshots for this virtual disk (see "calculates the time system required by the snapshot files" at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384)

  • How to remove the snapshot works

    Hello

I have a VM with snapshot 1 and it is the parent of the current state of the virtual machine. Then I caught a few updates, snapshot 2 and it becomes the parent of the current state of the virtual machine.

    1. If I return my VM to snapshot 1 and remove the 2 snapshot will be the 2A merged with snapshot 1 snapshot. Because I read somewhere "if we choose to delete a single snapshot, then just this snapshot is merged into its parent Preview"

    2. what happens if I delete the snapshot 2 without going back to the VM to the snapshot 1.

    Welcome to the community,

the wording is the kind of confusion. If you "delete" a snapshot, its content is merged into its direct parent. If you go back to a snapshot, all changes will be discarded but the snapshot will still be visible but the snapshot file is essentially empty, when you delete this snapshot after returning to it, so there's nothing that can / will be merged with its parent company.

  • How to create the snapshot to the remote data store?

    Hi all.

I have esxi 4.1 now if I run the snapshot in the snapshot file created on the host server, but I want to create the file snapshot directly to remote NAS. Can I do this?

    Thanks in advance.

    best account.

    Dan.

check this, you can set a different location of snapshot: http://blog.vmpros.nl/2009/05/14/vmware-creating-snapshots-in-a-different-location-than-default-virtual-machine-directory-1002929/

  • Removal of all the snapshots--> error: more space for virtual disk...

    Hello everyone

I'm quite new to VMware and has failed to find a solution for my problem. If someone could help me, it would be awesome!

During the migration of a SBS2003 guest at a new SBS2008 customer, I made some shots. I have now finished, the new SBS2008 works well and is already in production. Now I wanted to free up the space occupied by all these snapshots and finished with this error:

There is no more space for disk virtual hercules2.mydomain.local - 000005.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by the release of disk space on the relevant volume, and then click Retry.

The SBS2008 still seems to work very well. All snapshots in the Snapshot Manager left... but when you browse the data store the snapshot files are still there.

    How to proceed now?

    Thanks in advance everybody!

    Renaud

If you have another store of data with extra space, you can clone the virtual computer to the another data store.

  • How to select different data store for the snapshot

    Hello

I connected with two data store ESXi 4 server. First data store is a local raid-5 HD and the second data store is a netgear NFS nas.

virtual machines are stored on the local data store. I want to archivie snapshot for my virtual machine to use the second (nas NFS) data store. I tried to snapcho, but the disk data store is used is always the local.

can I select a different data store to store the snapshot files?

    Thank you

  • Turn off the virtual machine to remove the snapshot?

I discovered that, even though my Snapshot Manager says that there are no photos, I have several virtual machines with the snapshot files. I tried to create a new snapshot and then remove it, but it does not work. I tried to shut down the VM, and then create a snapshot and remove - that works. What is the difference? Why would it works when the virtual computer is disabled but does not work when the virtual machine is turned on?

And even if you go to snapmgt you can not delete them?

Download rvtools tool, there is an instant writer and see if there's trully snaps and might send a screnn for me!

  • Snapshot Manager was unable to remove the snapshot but deleted the reference to it. Now what?

I was working with my VMware Workstation, when I was running from not enough space on my host machine.

I decided to go to my virtual machine and delete all unused snapshots to recover disk space.

When I tried to do it, using the Snapshot Manager, I learned that it was not enough disk space to complete the operation, but references to the snapshot files have been deleted, which means I can try more to remove the old clichés.

How can I recover diskspace wasted, now that the snapshots are no longer visible in the list of snapshots?

I scoured my error log and came across this error message, so who can provide any useful information:

    Jan 11 16:02:17: vmx\

DISKLIB-LIB: not enough space to combine. Have 644259840 bytes, 5607260160 bytes, of need.

First of all make sure that you have enough free disk space - and then create a new snapshot, and delete again.

Who must complete the new snapshot Manager
