SQL Express for vCenter Database

Hi, I intend to establish a small 12 Ent more ESXi 5 host environment and would like to ask if there is no limitation of the accommodation of the vCenter on SQL Express on the vCenter Server database. Additional, also hosting the databases of Manager Update and SRM.

Thank you

Hello

To use SQL Express have a limitation (4 GB Maximum size database):

Notes:
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is intended for small deployments of up to 5 servers and/or 50 virtual machines.

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalID=2003790

If you must you use VUM and SRM, consider using another SQL. It's better.

Requeriments VUM - http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=2005084

I m not sure if the SRM is compatible with SQL Express, please visit here http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php?

    Hello
    I have a single display element -: P2_FROM_Date. If his game, Fri, sat or Sun I want to put the date of the last Monday date. If its Mon, Mar or sea, it must be this date of Monday.

    Ex: Today is Friday and last Monday was 18.
    So yesterday, today, tomorrow and Sunday, the date appear as June 18, 2012.
    Since Monday to Wednesday, the date has to be the next that is Monday, June 24, 2012

    I tried under 'Source' from the element using PL/SQL expression and the body of the PL/SQL function. Does not

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks and greetings
    Umer

    1. you must set 'used source' "Always".
    2 If you use a PLSQL function as source type body should set a 'RETURN' statement like this:

    declare
    lv_date number;
    begin
    select to_char(sysdate,'D') into lv_date from dual;
    if lv_date=2 then
      return to_char(sysdate-1);
    end if;
    end;

  • Migrating from a SQL Express 2005 local database to SQL 2008

    I was reading up to the migration of the "shipped" vCetner 4.1 to a database SQL 2008 database external recently and came across these two articles VMWare KB:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1028601

    and

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/documentLinkInt.do?micrositeID= & Popup = true & LanguageID = & externalId = 7960893

    The difference I see with these is that you have just to back up the database, import, reinstall vCenter, while the other has you just stop vCenter, migrate the database and re-create the rollup SQL Agent jobs. What article we should be followed? Both? Just the first one will be?

    Thanks for any input you can provide!

    -Brian

    Since MSSQL 2005 Express does not have the SQL agent, vCenter Server manages the hourly job.

    Switch to MSSQL 2008 Edition nonExpress would require for you allows you to deploy the necessary jobs.

    So, my suggestion is to use http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1028601 with a small change:

    After step 7. (there is a lack 8. you'll have 'implement' :-)) you must deploy the jobs described in http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1029824 (section 1))

  • Upgrade SQL Express to vCenter server

    Hello

    In one of our environment vSphere 4.1, we have SQL SERVER 2005 Express edition. We need to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 Express exdition.

    After SQL guys, below must be performed;

    1) take backup of database,

    2) uninstall of SQL SERVER 2005 Express

    3) install SQL 2008 R2 Express

    4) restore the SQL 2008 R2 Express database

    Above activity will take approximately 2 hours.

    I want to know what will be the impact on the current server vCenter and the guests/vms.

    Thank you

    Mihir

    Hello

    your VM would work fine and your hosts will also be fine. But you will lose access to your vCenter server. The Impact will not be on the vCenter server and may require a downtime.

    Thank you

  • vCenter database using SQL Express Edition

    VMware dear Experts,

    If I use the following sql express edition for vCenter database, so I would like to know what will be the maximum size of vCenter database and host how much we can add in vCenter server.

    SQL express edition 2000 32/64 bit

    SQL express edition 2005 32/64 bit

    SQL express edition 2008 32/64 bit

    SQL express edition 2012 32/64 bit

    Concerning

    Mr. VMware

    The limitation is NOT on the number of hosts or VMs. SQL limitation only based on size.

    SQL Express 2005/2008 - 4 GB

    SQL Express 2008 R2 to 10 GB

    SQL Express 2012 to 10 GB

  • Limits for vCenter with SQL Express

    If you use the built in free MS SQL Express with vCenter so often said that it would limit the size of the environment 5 guests and 50 virtual machines. My question is if it is a "hard" limit that controls vcenter or if it's just a risk to run in SQL Express size limit if you use increasingly large amounts of hosts and virtual machines?

    Yes, nothing will stop you, just the limit of size of 4 GB and other normal express limitations as 1 CPU usage only, 1 GB max RAM, etc.

    Just watched a small DB vCenter with 9 manageg ESX and ESXi VM of 50-60. It is 6, 6 GB DB size, just for your information.

    Concerning

  • Limitations of SQL Express 2005 with vCenter linked mode servers

    Hello

    We have a problem at the moment whereby we have reached the limit of 4 GB of SQL Express 2005 and you want to move the database to a dedicated SQL Server. However, one of my colleagues advised he read somewhere that figures recommended for 5 guests and 50 guests for SQL Express are related vCenters signifcantly increased (he thinks a dozen times).

    Is anyone able to confirm/deny this and if confirming point me in the direction of the supporting documentation? I have searched, but am not able to find information reinforcing the above figures.

    Thank you

    Chris.

    Hello

    Recommend VMware SQL Express for small environment, the limit is 5 guests and 50 comments. If you have a linked vcenter environment, you will have a second database for this vcenter. So this vcenter will be able to have 5 guests and 50 comments too.

    But your first database will not increase the limit, you have always the same.

    You can get more information here: VMware KB: vCenter Server 5.0 installation best practices

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is intended for small deployments of up to 5 servers and/or 50 virtual machines.

    This is for vsphere 5 but the limitation is the same thing on v4.

    Julien.

  • What will be lost if I use a new database for vCenter Server?

    Currently, we use VC 2.5 U4 with database SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition.  We intend to migrate the SQL Server used by VC to SQL Server 2005 Express 2000 database.  We have tried the upgrade on-site of the VC database but without success.

    In this way, we will create a new SQL Server 2005 Express for VC database.  We would like to see more performance statistics, the following items will be lost?

    (1) resource pool

    (2) cluster configuration

    (3) connect to the ESX host

    (4) configuration of NIC in ESX host

    (5) the allocation of resources for each virtual computer

    We are very concerned by the Network Configuration of a particular ESX host that takes us a long time to repair.

    Thank you

    The ESX host network configuration will remain as it is a host level setting.  With regard to the other elements:

    (1) Yes, you will lose your Resource Pools

    (2) your cluster configuration, including DRS rules, etc. will be lost

    (3) you will need to add each ESX host on your vCenter Server

    (4) as indicated, you will not lose your network configuration

    (5) If you set resources in a Resource Pool, then you who will lose.  If you set it on the virtual machine itself then I believe that you leave this setting.

    You will also lose some other things, like all the permissions you applied at various levels of vCenter.

  • Best database for vCenter Server 4

    I was wondering what would be the best recommendation for vCenter database server SQL 2005 Enterprise or Standard 64-bit or 32 or 64-bit SQL 2008 Standard or Enterprise. I am trying to build a benefits and disadvantages. I have the database compatibility matrix, but I wondered about the characteristics that could give vCenter that it may not have the capacity. SQL 2008 gives any advantage that 2005 is not that someone has seen or knows. I just want to understand the best database to go with any information about this would be very useful to make my decision. I have difficulties to find advantages and disadvantages to decide what data to go with vCenter

    Hello

    in my opinion, it depends on your deployment, at the present time that I deployed SQL Server 2008 and use with my VCenter 4 so far it was good my environment is relatively low 88 VMs, it's the configuration I use:

    SQL Server 2008 SP1 STD x 64

    Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 x 64 STD

    I did not notice my old previous deployment if performance:

    SQL Server 2005 STD x 86 SP3

    Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 STD x 86

    back then my environment was still 35 VMs

    Kind regards

  • secconf.Sql. If it will work for upgrades or only for new databases?

    Hello

    I'm reviewing oracle 11g features and found that few things need special attention, such as checking the settings and the changes in the default profile.

    Looking at the secconf.sql file, I found this note

    REM only invoked for databases of newly created, not for upgrade of databases

    My question is
    (1) if I update a database to Oracle 10 G to Oracle 11 G, will, these changes in profile by default and the audit take place or not?
    (2) these 11 G changes will happen if we create new databases using DBCA?

    Thank you
    Delphine

    If you take a peek of scripts by calling secconf.sql in 11.2 /rdbms/admin, you see that secconf.sql can be run from catuprgd.sql with the following calling sequence:

    catupgrd. SQL-> catproc.sql-> catpexec.sql-> execseq.sql-> secconf.sql

    You can retrieve it with:

     pwd
    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/rdbms/admin
    [oracle@lx01 admin]$ grep secconf.sql *.sql
    execsec.sql:Rem Only run the secconf.sql script for new database creations, not
    execsec.sql:      :secconf_name := '@secconf.sql';
    secconf.sql:Rem $Header: rdbms/admin/secconf.sql /main/3 2008/10/26 23:05:27 apsrivas Exp $
    secconf.sql:Rem secconf.sql
    secconf.sql:Rem      secconf.sql - SECure CONFiguration script
    [oracle@lx01 admin]$ grep execsec.sql *.sql
    catpexec.sql:@@execsec.sql
    execsec.sql:Rem $Header: execsec.sql 12-jun-2006.13:39:34 rburns Exp $
    execsec.sql:Rem execsec.sql
    execsec.sql:Rem      execsec.sql - secure configuration settings
    [oracle@lx01 admin]$ grep catpexec.sql *.sql
    catpexec.sql:Rem $Header: catpexec.sql 06-jan-2007.20:57:33 rburns Exp $
    catpexec.sql:Rem catpexec.sql
    catpexec.sql:Rem      catpexec.sql - CATProc EXECute pl/sql blocks
    catproc.sql:@@catpexec.sql     --CATFILE -X
    execcr.sql:Rem      Run from catpexec.sql (catproc.sql)
    [oracle@lx01 admin]$ grep catproc.sql catupgrd.sql
    @@catproc.sql --CATFILE -X

    Thus, it seems that catupgrd.sql still works secconf.sql. Given that catuprgd.sql is THE upgrade script (see http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10820/scripts004.htm#sthref3623), it seems that this secconf.sql is still running.

    But this is not the case if you read execsec.sql code and comments:

    Rem Only run the secconf.sql script for new database creations, not
    Rem for upgrades or any other reruns of catproc.sql. The version column
    Rem in registry$ is NULL while catproc.sql is running the first time
    Rem  on a new database.

    VARIABLE secconf_name VARCHAR2(256)
    COLUMN :secconf_name NEW_VALUE secconf_file NOPRINT

    DECLARE
       p_version  varchar2(30);
    BEGIN
       :secconf_name := '@nothing.sql';
       SELECT version INTO p_version FROM registry$
       WHERE cid='CATPROC';
       IF p_version IS NULL THEN
          :secconf_name := '@secconf.sql';
       END IF;
    END;
    /

    SELECT :secconf_name FROM DUAL;
    @&secconf_file

    In the case of database upgrade registry .version $ is not null and above the code will run nothing.sql instead of secconf.sql:

    [oracle@lx01 admin]$ cat nothing.sql
    Rem $Header: nothing.sql 18-oct-2001.09:57:38 Exp $

    It is therefore very likely that secconf.sql is not running during the 11.2 database upgrade (I think that the same should apply to 11.1).

    Hello

    My vCenter database is installed on the local server with the vCenter server.  When installing without DSN was created because the local database.  Now, I need to create a dedicated server to host the database but can't find where, in the current installation, I would like to change to vCenter point to the new location.

    I read these KBs

    KB.VMware.com/kb/7960893 - movement of the SQL Server to vCenter database
    KB.VMware.com/kb/5850444 - migration vCenter Server on a different host machine
    KB.VMware.com/kb/1003928 - troubleshooting the database data source used by the VirtualCenter Server

    Problem is that (1) there is no DSN, (2) the registry key is not there either, and (3) I cannot find what to change in the vpxd.conf file

    I am able to "migrate the database" and "can create a new dsn to point to the new location.

    So, the question is where can I find the current configuration of the database\dsn.

    I hope that's clear

    Hi VMGenie,

    The reason why it does not appear THAT DSN u is because your machine VC can be 64-bit and the vCenter uses 32-bit DSN settings.

    Open the C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe folder for this exe... it should show u the DSN settings.

    Sometimes, this error will occur if the tnsnames.ora file is corrupted. Can you please check tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora with a text editor ordinary for illegal characters (not the one that comes with Navigator because that could make corruption).

    Or simply move the tnsnames.ora that far and try with direct connect. (hostname:port\SID).
