Start a virtual machine in offline mode? (i.e. If it is not on the network)

I want to be able to start a virtual machine and modify network settings before I allow it to connect to the network.  The physical equivalent of this would be to pull the cable network on a server before starting, then the changes after startup and then plug the cable back in.

Is there some equivalent to this in VMWare?  Can someone suggest a procedure for this?

Go to the virtual machine settings and uncheck the box "connect to power on" for the network card.

  • How to start a virtual machine without vmx file

    Hello, I have a virtual machine that I want to start up using 10.0.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 32-bit workstation but I don't have multiple vmdk files and a file on me vmxf and apparently, that's all that is in the software. How do I run something like that?

    Hello
    You cannot start a virtual machine without a vmx file.
    If you do not have a vmx file - fly a.
    For example this one:
    -----------------------------------

    . Encoding = "windows-1252".

    config.version = '8 '.

    virtualHW.version = '8 '.

    scsi0. Present = 'TRUE '.

    scsi0.virtualDev = "free".

    memsize = "2048".

    scsi0:0. Present = 'false '.

    scsi0:0. FileName = "set-path-to-bootdisk-and-then-set-.present-to-true-to-activate".

    ethernet0. Present = 'TRUE '.

    ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000".

    displayName = "minimal-vm.

    guestOS = "windows7-64.

    virtualHW.productCompatibility = "hosted".

    ------------------------------------

    That cuts into a file and store it as a *.vmx.
    Then launch the new VM with
    VMware /path-to-vmx/name.vmx or
    vmplayer /path-to-vmx/name.vmx
    Other users may also recommend to simply launch the user interface and follow the file > New menu...
    and then order the new virtual machine to the card by selecting your existing virtual disks.

  • Cannot start a virtual machine from an ISO stored on the NFS share

    We have an NFS share on our Windows 2003 server to serve the ISOs for virtual machines

    However if we have attached an ISO to a virtual machine and configured to boot from it, it does not find the ISO, just attempts to boot from the network, but if copy us the ISO in a data store local it will start and install correctly.

    We set the NFS share for anonymous access on Windows Server, we tried with both read and write permissions, but still no luck

    Anyone can get an idea about this

    Thank you

    Kimble

    ESXi must connect to the NFS share with the root account.  You will have to map the root login to an account on the Windows Server.   You can see a sample of the instructions here - http://www.sohoadvisers.com/tutorials/vmware-esxi/connect-esxi-to-windows-nfs.

  • What HA refusing to try to start a virtual machine?

    I'm trying just to clear on how this process works. If HA is enabled, there is a failure of the host, and he's trying to restart the virtual machines on one or several other hosts, when the host will refuse to restart (failover) a virtual machine? Assume that there is no reservation other than the default 37 MHz CPU and some booking fees calculated generals for RAM (these are the default values, right?). A host would continue to attempt to restart the virtual machines as long as there are at least 37 Mhz and a few hundred MB of RAM available for the moment he is trying to restart? And if so, there are algorithms maintains the host master to decide where to start these VMs? I just think that she should try to startups VM alternately between the available hosts and wait a little bit to make sure that there are still some available resources before you start the following, or something like that.

    Also, if there is fragmentation of resources (for example, 8% of availability on each of the 15 hosts), but HA needs to start a virtual machine that requires 15% of host resources (I realize that there is a reserve in order to decide this question of the requirement, even), would automatically make migration of VMS to other hosts (if the DRS is also enabled) or he'd just sorry cannot start this virtual machine, even if the group as a whole has space for him.  [in this case, must not make large reserves because without a reservation, the virtual machine would start upward and like CPU or memory has increased its use would cause some DRS force other virtual machines out of the host, and perhaps that would work.]

    vSphere 5.1 (vCenter and ESXi)

    The master knows where virtual machines are running and try to balance where virtual machines are started. Reservations and overhead costs are the only things taken into account from a point of view of its use (not the actual resources consumed on a host) because HA does what VMs restarted (and if they have reserves prompting these resources, they need to have to start).

    If the DRS is turned on and available, HA will work with DRS to move workloads so that the largest VMs can begin. If you have virtual machines more the thing to think about is what admission control policy you use. It may be wise to use the location function if all your virtual machines are large and close to the same size, or dedicated host of failover so you won't have to deal with shuffling DRS of workloads. Everything depends on your environment and your needs.

    Does that answer your questions?

  • Stop/start multiple virtual machines with names created automatically

    Hi all

    in my test environment, I want to stop or start multiple virtual machines via the script.

    Their name is always like this:

    'vm-100-qa', 'vm-101-qa","vm-100-qa","vm-102-qa '...

    Now I would like to just stop every VM 'vm-140-QA' to 'vm-160-qa.

    I created a table "$a = 140.160", but I don't know how to implement this in a script 'Shutdown-VMGuest-comments '.... »

    Sorry for this stupid question. I am a beginner absolute powershell.

    Thank you very much in advance,

    Petrie

    You can do something like this

    140..160 | %{   Shutdown-VMGuest -VM "vm-$_-qa"}

  • Start all virtual machines

    Hello

    A couple of weeks, I installed Vmware server 2.0 on Ubuntu 8.04 server, I must say that it works perfectly, I encounter any problem yet. At this point, I am trying to automate some processes such as backup and start and stop virtual machines.

    The thing is for the moment we have 4 virtual machines and im starting those manually now (1 by 1) using the vmrun command, now my question is, is anyway to start all virtual machines at the same time? I tried many things and I can't make it work, some help would be really appreciated.

    Thanks in advance and best wishes,

    Stone.

    OK - enter you requirement exactly, in my defense.

    I posted earlier, a shell script to the server 2.0 beta forum, which found all the *.vmx scripts, and then made a "suspend" their needs so very easy to change it to do a 'departure' instead.

    See the 'vmware - suspend' script in this post:

    My printers they are in offline mode. How to reconnect to them on our network home?

    Hello

    What is the brand and model of the printer?

    Method 1:

    First of all I suggest you run the troubleshooter and check if that helps.

    For more information visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Open-the-Printer-troubleshooter

    Method 2:

    You can also try the troubleshooting steps in the link below.

    The new status of the printer is "offline" after you remove a print queue and then restart a Windows computer

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2027593

    To do: Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/322756

    Method 3:

    I suggest you to follow the steps and check.

    (a) open the start menu and click on the "devices and printers". This will open a window with a list of the printers currently installed on your computer.

    (b) double-click the icon of the printer that you want to change online. The status of the printer appears in the form "printer: Ready" or "printer: offline.".

    (c) click on "printer: offline" and the menu of the printer. Click on "Printer" in the menu bar and uncheck "Use printer offline." This action will change the printer from offline to online mode.

  • Is it possible to use a virtual machine like XP Mode to use a driver that is incompatible with Windows 7?

    The driver is for a former Lego Mindstorms USB IR Tower. The device itself appears in Windows 7, but there is no drivers compatible with a 64 bit version of Windows 7 or Windows Vista. I know with certainty that the driver is compatible with XP SP 2 and a 32-bit version of Vista, and it could be compatible with a 32-bit installation of Windows 7.

    I have XP Mode, set up on Windows 7 64 bit machine, but the unit will not go through to the virtual machine. I read on another forum that if the driver of a measuring device is not compatible with Windows 7 the device does not appear in the virtual machine.

    Is there a workaround that doesn't involve using a separate XP machine or installation of XP on a virtual machine of third party such as Oracle?

    Don't know if this will work in your situation, but you can disable checking 'signed' driver for Win7
    in the start menu. Jut tap F8 during Windows startup, and then choose-
    Disable the Driver Signature Enforcement among the startup options.

  • Start a virtual machine at startup

    I briefly looked for an answer to this, but I don't see anything, so if I missed it, I apologize.

    My mother has a bad habbit to fuck up his computer so I thought I'd be a good son and set up her laptop so that it starts in a VM at startup and if it breaks, I can just log in to the host operating system and take the backup I intend to take as a starting point and restore it.

    Keep in mind, she doesn't have a network boot server in a virtual machine. Is there a way to change the windows boot.ini file so that it will load only in virtual machine, unless I need for maintenance

    Hello

    You always need to install an OS to run VMware Player where do support (remote) that you are talking about the host.

    So put an option in the boot.ini file does not work.

    Basically you would have to auto-start the virtual machine when the host has started, and then put this one mode full-screen.

    You could do at least some of this with the vmrun command from the startup folder for example, but I'm not sure of the mode switch full screen on this one.

    He has been spoken before.

    Here are some links:

    http://communities.VMware.com/thread/284777

    or, use this trick guys from VMware, it should work and is fairly simple to use.

But when I create a simple virtual machine and start reading the BONES of CD ROM it does not start. Is it because I use eval mode. I think ESX 4 is fully functional and active for 60 days. When I start the virtual computer it concludes with the message "Operating System not found" and not even boot from the CD ROM After two or three configurations of chaning of VM, I'm still not able to understand. Can someone tell me where I am doing wrong. In ESX 3.5, I ran the virtual machine correctly but in ESX 4, I'm not sure. This is a new server and ESX 4.0 is also new facility. I also appreciate if someone tells me a guide that shows step by step how to create a virtual ESX simple machine. I have not yet install VC 4 as I have not yet received the licenses.

    Thanks in advance

    Please check the following things

    1, "to connect to the power on ' should be checked for the CDROM in editing parameters

    2, Goto VM BIOS and check if the CDROM is the first boot device.

    3, check the CD-ROM drive to start a physical machine

    4, check if you connect the CD-ROM drive to a remote location.
