Start button / Documents broken icon

Hello Helpdesk,

I recently accidentally almost moved the folder my documents, but then clicked Cancel.

Since then when I click on my Start button and then go to select Documents, it does not work.

I right click and choose Properties, information which are displayed all the fields are white.

It won't let me update this information or to replace the icon.

How can I fix the Documetns icon on my Start button?

Thanks in advance for your time and your consideration.

Teresa

Hi all

I actually ran Microsoft Fixit and fixed it as if by magic.  YES!

I'm sure it's simple, but I am very limited in my knowledge regarding such things.

  • Wallpaper, icons, taskbar, and start missing the Start button!

When I connected my computer yesterday, my office was a black screen dark with no background, no icons, no taskbar and no start button.  Curiously, the 'My documents' folder has been opened and the files it contains coulds will open normally.  Using this file open, I was able to navigate to other files and folders through windows Explorer, but was not able to restore the office via the control panel.  Right click on the screen had no effect, and the windows of the keyboard key is also without effect.  I started the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete, click on 'File', then "Start New Task" and "Explorer.exe" has entered into the box.  It restored the office and everything you still, but the problem is repeated every time that I reboot.  I have run many virus scans, eliminate a virus called "y.exy", as well as some adware in the registry, but the removal of the malware has not fixed this problem.  Is this virus problem, or is it a problem with the Explorer?  Why the monkey (my documents) folder would be always available at startup, when I almost never access that folder otherwise?  Any help would be most apreciated - is not only annoying - I am very worried that the malware may have corrupted my computer somehow.

    Hi rcquinn,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Vista Community.  Start your computer in Safe Mode and if necessary, start explorer.exe task manager.  Then perform a System Restore and let us know if this helps.

    Greetings,

There used to be an icon beside the Start button that would take me directly to the desktop without worrying about how many windows can be opened and stacked above the other.  I lost this icon somehow and I have no idea how to do to get it back.  Can you help me please?  Thank you.  Alain

  • How to remove the unwanted icons in the toolbar next to the Start button?

    • I have two of these lines has never asked for them. What are they and can you help me to get rid of them please

    * original title - I have unwanted icons in my toolbar next to the Start button, how can I get rid of them please *.

    Hi Pauline,

First of all, let's make sure that you have only the taskbar at the bottom and not additional toolbars.  Right-click on the Start button and click on properties.  Go to the tab bar tasks and do not forget to uncheck lock the taskbar if it is checked and click on apply.  Go to the tab tool bars.  Make sure that nothing is checked, unless you want the quick launch icons to show. This is normally what appears next to the start menu and is a quick way to see and start programs of your choice - you can add or remove icons at your convenience as follows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Add-or-remove-programs-on-the-Quick-Launch-toolbar.  If that's what you want to see (and which resembles what you want to get rid of), uncheck this box as well.  Click OK and the quick launch icons should be gone (but have been recorded and can be added by simply re - check the box).  Personally, I find them very useful, but if you don't them want, then you can remove them as described above - it's entirely your choice.

Secondly, you say that it is in two rows.  This is probably because of two bars of additional tools, either because the taskbar has been extended to two lines instead of one.  If it is still two rows, then if you deleted all the toolbars, it is because the taskbar are expanded.  Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar and make sure Lock the taskbar are not checked - if so, uncheck the box.  Now hover your mouse on the top edge of the taskbar until it turns into a line with an arrowhead at each end and click the left mouse button and drag the taskbar to the bottom until it comes only one line (or up if you want to make three or more lines - your choice).  Release the mouse button and that will be your new taskbar.  You can lock it if you like by checking the lock the taskbar (as described above to unlock the taskbar - just click and a check mark will appear to indicate that it is locked) - this is for you.  Personally, I keep it unlocked so I can change more quickly - but it's a personal choice that everyone else does.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • I can't access my account normally in Vista Home Premium: no job, no icons, no start button bar

This problem started about 2 days ago. I turn on the computer and it starts normally. Then, when I put my password to login my account all I'm getting is the dialog box on a black screen asking if I want to start Vista now or more later. In addition, there are also a message in the corner at the bottom right of the screen saying that it is not a genuine copy of Vista. There is no taskbar, no icons, no start button. So far I tried to start safe mode and it identify you with icons, button bar and try to start but the background is always black without wallpaper. I tried restoring the system and don't have a virus scan with Live One Care, but these did not work.  Sometimes if I leave it alone and come back later the missing items are returned on their own, but the wallpaper is not yet there. In fact, while I was typing this question jumped in the back things. What else can I try?

    Hello

If Windows has not been activated, the black screen is a normal behavior of Microsoft.  See André solution in this thread for Windows 7.

If you are using a desktop computer there should be a reset button on the monitor auto

    and try these 2 methods:

try a restore of the system before this happened

    http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/system_restore.htm

If necessary do in safe mode

    Windows Vista

    Using the F8 method:

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap theF8 key repeatedly until you are presented with theBoot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
    3. Select the Safe Mode option with the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
    5. To start Windows, you'll be a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
    6. Do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.
