Start Windows XP external hard drive

The power supply on the old computer my wife THAT XP has dropped.

I had another autour power that I swapped in, but it's not a SATA connector for internal hard drive of the computer.

I had a hard drive enclosure and put the drive in it. With the disk in it, l can connect the player to my computer via USB and read the files, so I know the drive works in this way.

However, when I plug the hard drive into my wife's computer and try to boot from USB, Windows does not start from this player.

Is it possible I can get Windows to boot from external USB drive?

You don't need to. NIP just to your local PC and a power supply lead molex to SATA converter. Only a few dollars at most. Or search online shops selling.

Be careful! Are you sure that the spare power supply had all necessary connectors to your motherboard and had the same number of pins on each connector?

I know what is already on a thread, but here it is again (i.e. thread became uncontrollable anyway and did not offer me solutions). I have an ASUS K53S laptop computer Series and use it as a desktop PC. It sits on my desk and never move, I plugged my larger screen, a keyboard and mouse, printer and external hard drive that I keep all my information on i rarely save to local disk. These things represent more than ports USB to the laptop, I have a hub 4 ports on there also. It is just background information; I mean, the laptop is a must.

Here's the problem: when I start, as I do every morning, I used to see ASUS inspire Innovation - first of all, persistent Perfection for about 1 second, then the laptop will just get on the job and complete its start-up in about a minute (including login). Which was very good until a few days ago when things started slows down a bit, then I rebooted as I always used to with my Windows XP tour. All closed but return is reactivated and it hung on the opening screen of ASUS and show no signs of getting further. I went outside and continued on another work that does not need a computer, thinking that if I ignored it it would be bit go further, but I came back hours later to find that it is always locked.
Well after a little, I took the plug my external hard drive, and he continued to start where he left off, like nothing had happened.
This settled this possibility, but before that, I had established a thing; I need to connect my external hard drive before starting, otherwise it wouldn't connect properly.
When I managed to finally get both going at the same time (Yes, after some persistence, he recognized the drive but I still would like a solution to this when it exists), I looked at the hard drive and all my files are corrupted or something. photos are not valid, some files that I know to have files in appear them as empty and I can't make any sense at all. Is there someone out there who has had this problem before and fixed, and if so, how?

  • computer a824n of office doesn't start with an external hard drive 2T connected.

My HP Pavilion a824n desktop computer won't start with my new external hard drive 2T connected via a USB port.  The computer stops on the first screen, which I think is the Intel screen, with options for press ESC, F1, F10.  But these keys do nothing.  The only way out is to press the power button until the computer turns off.

If I disconnect the external drive before turning the power on, the computer starts normally, the internal hard drive.  After that, I can connect from the outside and it works correctly, so I don't think that there is a defect in it.

I can get into the screen of the BIOS settings to start with the external drive disconnected and by pressing the F8 key.  But the BIOS shows adequate priority, with the hard drive screen internal first, second DVD, third CD.  The internal hard drive is correctly identified by the model number and the new external drive is not at all (because I started without the connected external.)

My guess is that when I start with connected externally, BIOS thinks it's the hard drive, it is supposed to boot from.  How can I get the machine to boot from the internal drive?

Your guess is correct. The hard part is that I'm not sure of an exact solution I've seen this be something difficult to solve.

Have you tried to update the firmware of an external drive?

Have you updated your PC BIOS? If you are still running XP, I think that it is the update to the BIOS of your PC:

  • HP envy Phoenix: win 7 does not start with connected external hard drive

I have a desktop HP Envy Phoenix with i7 chip and an SSD for the OS.  If I connect via USB external drive of 3 TB WD for the backup of the system does not start while it is attached.  The pc seems to be trying to boot from the outside, can't find the OS and does not start.  It will start fine with small external drives connected.  It is the size of the disk? Is there a way to fix this?

    Hello

The WD drives seem to pose problems of my potential.  I have used other brands such as Seagate and Hitachi without running into problems with external USB drives causing the system to boot.  Maybe it's the USB adapter that I use which does not cause starting problems.

    @tpetras

I used the adapter HP USB 3, which uses drivers NEC or TI and has never had a problem starting via a USB external (non - WD) readers.

There are additional manual changes must be made to the .vmx config file to allow the Virtual Machine to be suspended not and do not taken Snapshots in order to have it comply with the same conditions imposed on a partition boot Camp install Windows when it is running as a Virtual Machine.

This was repeated several times in this forum by myself and others so you should be able to search and find details of I synopsized here.

I had a quick glance, but you would be kind enough to post a link to this part.

Take a look at: changing the file .vmx for your VM from VMware Fusion (1014782)

To keep the Virtual Machine of suspension, you do not want to do when you use a physical disk, add the following option in the .vmx config file.

    suspended. Disabled = "TRUE".

To avoid having the pictures taken using the following option syntax:

    ide0:0. DeviceType = "rawDisk.

Note that if the physical disks hard was created as a (free) SCSI vs IDE, then ide0:0 would be scsi0:0.  Note that this option can be added automatically when adding a hard pointing to a raw disk, do not remember for sure and no were not I can test at then time, so the option may already be present but if not then add.

I've seen several methods described on Google - any recommendations on who should be?

If you create a minimum install to your internal drive (c) for Windows and use the external drive as D:, all your programs TB partition and applications (other than the BONE) can reside and run from the disk of TB. This allows you to re - install Windows without any loss of data at any time and without violating your license. Most users do not buy Enterprise of Windows including Windows-to-Go.

You can partition the external drive as a GPT Mac OSX journaled Extended and a parts of FAT32. You can convert FAT32 to NTFS on the side Windows, if you wish.

Is booting in windows 7, windows xp VHD possible? How to do this? It will be very nice if it will it be added as a feature in the future. It will be?

No, this is not possible, and the MS has no intention to add these features. If you need an older XP, run XPMode or install XP on a second partition.

Your program has the ability to create a partition bootable (what is the name of the program)?
If your program has the ability to clone, then this is the way to go if you want just an exact replacement for your internal drive, if a problem occurs catastrophic. A better option would be an imaging program that allows you to create images of your internal drive like this at some point. In this way, if you have a regular image, say twice a month, so you can fit maybe three or four images on the same drive that you want to clone in. A cloned disk must be the same size or larger that the drive is cloned. An image is compressed and takes less space.

  • I can't boot my system when I have an external hard drive connected.

Start with an external hard drive

Recently, I buy a WD MY Book Essential 1 TB external hard drive. I can't the computer to boot while the hard drive is connected.
The Gateway logo appears; If the My Book Essential is connected the computer won't go any further.
IF the My Book Essential is unplugged, by physically unplugging the cable power supply or where the USB 3.0 cable the system starts right in windows.
WD technology say to disconnect the drive when I stopped and when I start taking the computer to the external hard drive. For me, it makes no sense, there must be a better way.

    Hello

Go into your Bios by pressing DEL, F2, etc. at startup.

Look at the bottom of the start screen for the right for the installation key or BIOS.

    Wait your boot order Options.

You will probably find that the boot (or words like that) USB devices are listed as 1st in the boot order.

Replace the hard drive to be 1st in the boot order.

    See you soon.

Yes, you can create a recovery.

    Follow these steps:

Click Windows key + w. from the splash screen

Type Windows 7 recovery of file and press ENTER.

Click on create a system image.

This will create an image of the system if an external hard drive is connected.

  • Is it possible to extract personal folders from my hard drive and transfer to an external hard drive if Windows does not start?

Hello, I recently started my Windows XP Dell computer and it should start up normally unless it would run the ChkDsk utility. It would freeze then 68% on stage 1 and goes no further. I called the people of Dell and after trying so many solutions, including safe mode, safe mode with network and CommandPrompt, we ran the diagnosis. The hard drive and memory are fine, no errors. He concluded that it was the operating system and must be restored. However, I have important files, I need to extract from my hard drive and he recommended me an external hard drive. I bought it, but now I'm not sure how to extract my files from my drive hard if Windows can not even boot the desktop computer. Is it possible to extract these files without the use of the desktop computer?

And you've burned the .iso image, and not as data? If Yes, then you have created a bootable CD. Put it in your optical drive and restart the computer. You may need to change the boot order in your BIOS. With some machines, you can get a temporary startup command menu by pressing a function such as F12 at startup. Other computers require that you enter setup and change the boot order in the optical drive first of all from there. When you start your computer it will be information about which key press to enter the BIOS (Setup) or give you the temporary boot order.

After you changed the boot order to boot first from the CD and rebooted the computer, Knoppix will boot. Have your external hard drive connected to the computer before you start doing this. After Knoppix is finished booting, you will be in his office. It will be very similar to Windows. There are icons on the desktop for your internal hard drive and the external hard drive. Copy files from the internal to the external drive as you want. Review what I wrote about the use of Knoppix in my previous answer. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • Using a Mac to partition a USB external hard drive to use to start Windows 7 on a PC

    Hello

My PC hard drive died recently, and I need to reinstall Windows 7. Fortunately, I have a Windows 7 .iso file on my Macbook Pro. I also have an external hard drive USB empty. I try to use the Mac (in particular the disk utility program) partition this hard drive and load the .iso file in it, with the intention to start the system and install Windows 7 on my PC. (NB. I have a new internal hard drive which I intend to install Windows on to, but it's something that I should be able to handle later and should not be relevant at the moment.)

As my DVD player also decided to break (I had not used for a long time), I can't burn the .iso to disk image file and start that way.

So my question is, what is actually in all possible ways to use my WD 500 GB external hard drive to boot Windows 7 from USB? If so, is it possible to configure the hard disk with the .iso image file using a mac? I think I need somehow do "bootable" my hard drive to boot from it, but I don't know how to do this using a mac, so that it will be compatible for Windows startup.

I've had this problem for days now and nothing I try seems to work - I tried what seems like all combinations of formatting, partitioning, extracting, BIOS-set-up-ing and file-system-change I can think of. Any help will be really appreciated. Also, if you need information such as specifications, just let me know and I will try to provide all the details I can.

In addition, I understand that there a lot of messages on the boot from external hard drives, but I looked carefully and found nothing for my situation (more precisely using a mac).

Thanks in advance for help; If all goes well there is something obvious that I'm missing that I can fix it easily.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand you want to make bootable Windows 7 disk using Mac computer.

About a tool to burn an iso image on Mac, I suggest you contact apple support.

    https://discussions.Apple.com/community/desktop_computers

However, as a solution, I suggest to go to one of your friend who has the operating system windows download Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and burn the iso image.

Detailed suggestions are mentioned in the following article:
