Storage recommendations
We are a small shop 2 running ESX 4.0 currently hosts with only local storage. We will host SQL on 2 of the virtual machine.
I'm looking for advice on storage shared with decent performance, fault tolerance and scalable. Budget is $ 10,000.
The EVA4400 I watched is twofold.
The MSA1000 is terrible gear - I have my own horror stories about it and so do many others.
The MSA2000 is a very different material.

ESX host with local storage recommended for the host partition table?
Hi all
I know that the best practical partition table should look like this:
Mount Point
Partition
Size
Description
/ dev/sda (primary)
/ Boot
ext3
250 MB
Change of extra space for upgrades
N/A
SWAP
1 600 MB
Change the maximum size of Exchange service console
/
ext3
5120 MB
Change of extra space in the root
/ dev/sda (Extended)
/ var
ext3
4096 MB
Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with log files
/ tmp
ext3
1024 MB
Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with temporary files
/ opt
ext3
2048 MB
Create partition to avoid overfilling root with the log files of VMware HA
/ Home
ext3
1024 MB
Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with agent / user files
vmkcore
100 MB
Pre-configured
However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions? I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.
Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs. If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-
Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines

ESXi 5.0 boot partition size
What is the size of storage recommended for installing ESXi 5.0?
I recommend you do at least 6 GB (I usually use 10GB). Depends on how the systems of storage performer GBs (1 GB = 1,000 * 1,000 KB or 1,024 * 1,024 kb) 5 GB may not be enough.

EDIT: fixed the calculation for 1 GB

My MacBook Pro runs very slowly. I El Captain 10.11.4 rare apps on it, most are closed while I'm on safari. My photos take a 125 gb storage capacity. If that is the question, what external hard drive is recommended? If not, what is?

The recommended storage design
Hello
I was wondering what people recommend for a design of storage for large file servers. I need to configure multiple servers in the range of 3-4 TB each. My current setup is just a local storage of 2 TB vmfs volume, but I have not set aside for these servers shared storage. My thought was to have several vdisks on the separate storage LUNs and combine the disks on the servers. What is the best practice to recommend? Or is it perhaps differently or maybe different storage for this amount of data?
Thanks in advance.
Dan.
If its just CIFS/NFS shares, I would put a device dedicated as e to host all the actions.

Max or recommended LUNS per storage group
I can't find any definitive or maximum recommendation for the number of logical units (VMFS5), which can be placed in a storage group.
Can someone point me to some documents that indicate this and possiblly some explanation of ups and downs?

Local storage VMDK size recommended
At the time we were in VMware server, we were in charge of keeping virtual disks on our hosts relatively small (about 20 GB or less) and just add more disks to the virtual computer when necessary. The reason being because more large VMDK was unweildy and often caused performance problems. I wonder if there is a guideline like this for ESXi.
I think that with a SAN disk size becomes irrelevant because they are never actually moved or anything, but with local storage, consider backups and disk performance. All recommended for disc sizes?
Not exactly order this blog post, I've written should give you some additional information.

SAN storage configuration recommendations
We have a HP SAN with two fiber switches and a Bay of storage MSA2012FC with 12 146 GB drives. I am trying to decide how to configure storage for our VI3 environment and seeks recommendations.
At this point, I am considering two-Bay RAID 10 (6-146GB disks each) with 1 (220 GB) or 2 (440 GB) LUNS defined by the RAID array. The virtual machines are configured in an HA configuration so I think it would be better to have two tables separated raid against one. This way I can separate the pairs HA between the RAID arrays. If I create a single RAID 10 array, then if more then one disk fails in this table we could lose everything. In the future, we will add another MSA2000 pregnant then we will have another 12 146 GB drives. At this point, we can expand each Bay RAID 10 to 12 146 GB drives to give us more storage space and performance.
This sounds like a good plan? Any advice would be appreciated.
Hello
RAID 5 is recommended because the table can stay together if 1 disk breaks down. With spare disks, this is a good configuration. RAID 10, a disk fails and you are switched. If this also works...
I like Raid 5 and I have set up my disk space based on execution of 10-12 VMs per LUN. Who is the the average number per LUN. It's all about redundancy.

Sorry, that will make any big enough box. You can buy bubble type of material to keep it in place and a few bags of silica to keep "dry." For inks, you can read the following article:

Hello
I need to install FMW on windows with high availability environment using the storage that is shared in the following way:
3 windows 2008 R2 servers servers:
Host1 (Server Admin): gale servers (Server Admin) and EM
host2 (content 1): wecenter content: servers eats ( COE, WCCUI, IBR, CAPTURE)
host3 (content 1): wecenter content: servers eats ( COE, WCCUI, IBR, CAPTURE)
Host3 will be Host2 high availability on each managed as cluster based server
the question is how to design the structure of directory on windows environment, I need best practices
I found in the Linux directory structure "Enterprise Deployment Guide for Oracle WebCenter Content" as follows:
So how do apply on windows
Hello
Thank you! All the best. Be careful in choosing to shared storage.
# If your shared file system accessible via CIFS, SMB or Samba, you may search and/or performance indexing and corruption problems when you use the Verity search engine (not supported in 11g).
# If your file system shared accessible via CIFS, SMB or Samba, you should disable opportunistic locking (oplocks - data client-side caching) of the file system as it might interfere with the normal operations of Content Server. With solutions for storage network (SIN), the performance of the file system may be closely related to oplocking (data caching client-side), which disables the opportunistic locking can cause performance problems. Please plan your architecture accordingly.
Please feel free to correct if you get your answer to other purposes.
Thank you

VMFS partition alignment and recommendation of the storage provider
In the literature of my storage provider it says they use a band of 256 KB size, and it's a good approach to set the offset to 256 KB (or 512 sectors) when creating VMFS volumes.
"When you use the VI Client, the new partition is automatically set to an offset of 128 sectors = 64 k." But,
in fact, this configuration is not ideal when you are using the DS8000 storage disk. Because the
DS8000 uses more large block sizes, the offset must be set to at least the size of the stripe. For
RAID 5 and RAID 10 in the attachments of open systems, the allocation size is 256 KB, and it's a good
approach to set the offset to 256 KB (or 512 sectors). You can configure individual compensation
that from the ESX/ESXi server command line. »I'm guessing that they always use the old VMFS3 information above?
Now with vSphere 5.x and VMFS5 the offset is to the sector 2048 (or 1024KB)
Question is if I go with vSphere 5.x VMFS5 and create the volume VMFS via vCenter VI Client will be I'm always perfectly aligned with my storage or should I still manually create VMFS volumes with starting with sector 512 (256 KB)?
Thank you for your answers!
1 024 KB alignment is a multiple of many sizes of block by default if it guarantees a correct alignment for all types of storage where the result of 1024 / 'stripe size' is an integer value.

Addition of recommended VM storage
I everyone I have a quick question, maybe someone can help me with this. Here's our environment:
ESX 3.5 Update 4
Storage: FC SAN
We have just added 2 TB in our SAN and he created a 2nd vmfs volume. So now, we have storage VMFS-1 and VMFS-2. The two 2 TB each.
Here's my question: I created a new virtual machine (FTP server) with a storage of 40 GB (on VMFS-1). Now, I want to add a new partition of 500 GB to this virtual machine. I have about 500 GB left on the VMFS-1 volume so I just would add 500 GB in size at existing capacity within the parameters of the virtual machine? Or do I have to add a new hard disk to the virtual machine (in the settings) and create a new virtual disk and it points to my new volume (VMFS-2) who has note yet? Is there a performance difference between the two methods?
Thanks for your help...
It is easier to add another disk. If you do your existing C: extension of ESX, you would still have to extend it inside the virtual machine. You cannot use diskpart to do this since it is your system drive. If it's a Server 2008 might it's all done from the GUI. If I were you I would like to add another disk and make D:\. It is always better to separate your data from your system anyway.

What is the recommended value of pct_increase on tables and storage
Hi all.
SQL > select * from v version $;
BANNER
----------------------------------------------------------------
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - 64 bit Production
PL/SQL Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
CORE Production 9.2.0.3.0
AMT for Solaris: release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
SunOS rcworaprd 5.9 Generic_112233-07 sun4u sparc SUNW, Sun-Fire-480R
This who should I set the pctincrease value? I see some articles mention 0 or 100 so we have beautiful stretches even, others simply mention to adjust accordingly. We are witnessing at the moment is:
I'll put the next measure on MFG. TBL_REQUIREMENT_CLONE 5 M and pctincrease at 50 (its size increase of the parameter in the storage OEM tab)... last night we had a batch run and we were see errors in the log of alerts for her:
ORA-01653: unable to extend table MFG. TBL_REQUIREMENT_CLONE by 1005309 in the tablespace USER_DATA
And when I check the MFG. TBL_REQUIREMENT_CLONE there the next measurement value 1005309K, not the 5 M.
Any advice on why this would be appreciated.
Thank youHello
If you used the procedure below to migrate to managed locally, then it would still continue to show the behavior of dictionary managed tablespace.
You can confirm this by checking allocation_type in dba_tablespaces. For locally managed tablespaces it SYSTEM/UNIFORM. But in this case (migrated tablespace), it would be the user.Onlly I see is to define pctincrease 0.
dbms_space_admin.tablespace_migrate_to_local
