Storage Vmotion several stores of data to CSV

I have 6 virtual machines with 13 discs each on 72 different data stores (limit of 2 TB was really limited).  Extensions led to terrible performance, then the best course of action was to individual records on individual data warehouses (1 1 ratio of the data store vmdk).  We are now migrate all these 72 vmdk of 72 new data on the new storage warehouses.  In the past, we did these VMotions of storage via PowerCli data store or virtual machine for a store of data specified in a comma-delimited file.

I was trying to understand what would be the command line that I could insert the drives and appropriate in the command data warehouses "for each.  The command set-hard drive wasn't working.  You see where I was wrong?

[vSphere PowerCLI] C:\powershell > get-datastore HO-CX3-CF-Phopdnode03 - 1 m | Get-hard drive | % {Set-hard drive - HDD $_ - data store "ho_na3_phopdnode03_12"}

The cmdlet Get-hard drive with the parameter data store also returns the hard files that are not connected to a virtual computer.

A svMotion has update .vmx file the VM as well.

Maybe try it like that

Get - VM - Datastore ' HO-CX3-CF-Phopdnode03 - 1 m | Get-hard drive | `

where {$_.} Filename-match "HO-CX3-CF-Phopdnode03 - 1 m"} | `

Together-hard drive - data store "ho_na3_phopdnode03_12".

  • Storage Vmotion to a new data store get UUID and MAC change to hot after reboot

    Hello

I have a strange thing that happened on my vcenter.

Just do a vmotion hot storage between two data store.

I reboot the virtual machine and received no message to validate if I moved or copied.

When the virtual machine is restarted, I see that changing the UUID and MAC address.
Make me an error with an application running on it.

    Did anyone see that already?

We do some testing and solution for this problem is to download the VM's vmx file on the local system and apply these settings:

If you want to change the setting always or always create , power off the virtual machine and change its configuration (.vmx) file. Remove the line containing uuid.action = "crΘer" or uuid.action = 'keep'.

The configuration line such as this to keep the UUID and MAC after vmotion: uuid.action = 'keep '.

Reupload the file on the data store and restart the virtual machine

  • Spend RDM to VMFS using Storage vMotion

I have a server that is running Windows server 2003 SP2 Enterprise edition.

This server is using a SAN EVA8000 raw device mappings. We want to get rid of the device mappings gross and use instead a regular VMFS data store.

I tried to use storage vmotion to migrate the storage of a new vmfs datastore, hoping it would pass all the data from the mapping of raw device to a new VMFS datastore.

Completion of storage vmotion to the new data store, I still connected to the server raw device mappings.

It is still possible to migrate data on a raw device mapping to the data without downtime and manual filecopy vmfs store?

Is it possible to move from physical to virtual mode?

You can turn off the virtual machine, remove the diskette RDM and readd in virtual mode.

  • Storage vMotion a VM except disk that is in another data store

    Hello

I'm looking to convert a large number of virtual machines clones related to thick.  I decided the best way to do this is probably a simple a storage vMotion, but all the virtual machines have a secondary drive that is in another data store.  I have to make sure that disk #2 stays at its current location, while the machine virtual (Config and disk #1 files) are transferred to a new data store data store.

I figured out how to move a virtual machine complete or a single disc but not a virtual machine under a disc.  I am able to make it through the advanced options of puissancela vSphere client so I guess it is techinically possible.

Pointers or other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards

    All,

Benefit in performance if the 4 storage vmotion VMDK located on 4 separate data warehouses in a newly created 4TB data store. with 5.5 capacity 62, I was hoping that someone could tell me.

    I appreciate it

Well well, the response - as before - is "it depends...". ».

If you want to use a large drive or multiple small disks depends on the structure of data. If you can not divide the data into departments for example, projects, home/profile,... you can be better with a single large disk. Don't forget to use a GPT partition table, and you need to check if for example your backup software can handle that. Some image/VM based backup applications can backup and restore virtual drives very well, but do not have the ability to file level restore! Also don't forget that - disaster - restoration such a large virtual disk will take a significant amount of time during which data is not available for users. If the data structure allows to distribute to several virtual disks (you can always use DFS to present the data through a single share), I prefer this over the large virtual disk. With the smallest disks virtual, you will certainly have to watch each of them for free disk space, but you can increase the size of disk individually and restoration of a single virtual disk can be done much more quickly (with other discs still online / available to users).

  • data store full, okay do storage vmotion?

I have a virtual machine with a data disc on a complete data store (approximately 180 MB free). I thought I was doing a hot storage vmotion in another data store. Assming target data store has enough room, it will work?

I check the process of storage vmotion does use all the disk space on the source (I think the process consider the block on the source changes). It comes to ESXi 4.1

    Hello

If you have virtual machines running on the data store you can stop them (snack if it's possible) which will give you more space on the data store that it will remove the swap for the virtual machine files.

Also if possible please get a number of additional logical unit presented and extend the data store.

  • Storage vmotion to another data store on a different san

    Hello

We have a 3.5 ESX cluster running 4 host ESX and Virtual Center. The licensing is ESX Server standard edition. We are migrating to ESXi 4.1 vSphere and a new SAN. One of the issues that we are going through is because we are only in standard edition, we have no storage vmotion to migrate the virtual machines of data stores in the old SAN for data warehouses in the new San. Other than purchasing the add-on storage vmotion, what other options can I. I thought to add a new ESX 3.5 server to the cluster and make storage vmotion from this server while it is running trial license. I would probably need only a few days to storage vmotion on about 45 VMs. Please let me know if one were to do this or any other alternatives available.

However, after VM have been VMotioned of storage, they always appear in the inventory of the store of data EMC (as contained in the NetApp data store!).

If we edit the VM, the spectacle of .vmdks as being located on the NetApp.

  • Storage VMotion - a general error occurred: could not wait for the data.  Error bad0007.

    People,

I searched through this forum and have not found an answer that works in many positions out there, I say to myself that I would ask him once again.

    Here's the context:

We have 12 identical Dell M600 blades in 2 chassis with 16 GB of Ram, 2 x Xeon E5430, they are all connected to an Equallogic PS 5000XV iSCSI SAN on a separate iSCSI (vswitch1) with 2 cards network dedicated network and dedicated switch, console svc iscsi dedicated, dedicated VMkernel port for iscsi access. Net access (vswitch0) contains port groups VM for our various networks and a console port and vmkernel svc for VMotion with 2 separate NETWORK cards as well.

    We are running ESX 3.5 U3 and VCenter 2.5 U3 on Win2k3 R2

VMotion works between all servers, Storage Vmotion works for most machines, HA works and the value 2 host failurs with no monitoring of vm, DRS is set to manual for now I have a few machines on the local stores that I complete my rebuilt LUN, there is no set of rules for DRS and VMware EVC is enabled for guests of the Intel. However, I'll just describe one machine to do svmotion below.

    Here's the problem:

I'm trying to Svmotion via svmotion.pl - interactive, a Machine to Windows 2000 with a virtual disk and a virtual RDM. I am aware of the requirements for the RDM and required parameters for svmotion, independent is not selected for the RDM, and I also have svmotioned several machines linux and win2k3 with the same configuration without problem. In the interactive session, I choose to individually place the disks and I chose the virtual disk to only the virtual machine to be moved, essentially, as I saw it move vdisk virtual machine and then copy to the pointer of the RDM.

The use of the processor in this machine is about 25% average. but I try to run migrations at the time the lowest. and The Host it itself shows only about 5.5 GB of the 16 GB of RAM used. so I think we're good on the RAM. the volume/datastore that I'm migrating from has 485 GB free and the volume/datastore I migration towards a 145 GB free. the VM virtual disk is only about 33 GB.

I run the script the windows version of the RCLI svmotion. and when to begin the process, I get the following error at around 2 percent of the progress:

"Since the server has encountered an error: a general error occurred: could not wait for the data."  Error bad0007. Invalid parameter. »

After searching around, I found the following hotfixes to the U2 release notes

    • Migrate.PageInTimeoutResetOnProgress: Set the value to 1.

    • Migrate.PageInProgress: The value 30, if you get an error even after the setting of the Migrate.PageInTimeoutResetOnProgress variable.

I've made these changes, and I still get the same error.

The vmkernel on out of memory error, I had that before. And vmware support recommends setting 800M Max service console memory. And I did it and have no problems after that.

See if that helps the issue.

  • Storage vmotion, between data warehouses when the block size is different

    Hi all

I would like to know, is it possible to do a vmotion of storage between two data warehouses, when they have different block sizes. The case is as a former vmfs data store 3 which has been upgraded direct to vmfs5 there, but since it has been updated it maintains its own block size. While the newly created vmfs datastore 5 a block size of 1 MB.

Thus, storage Vmotion will work in this case? It will fail OR will be with degraded performance?

Finally, storage vmotion is possible even if you do not have a cluster DRS for storage?

    Thank you

    Yes you can!

Check some info on the effects of block size: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/02/18/blocksize-impact/

  • Storage vMotion expired, now VM is on 2 data warehouses and an orphan VM

I was trying last night to storage vmotion, my Exchange 2007 to a new data store on a different San, and it exceeded 6% of the way.  Now it's show as being on two data stores.  There is also a virtual machine with the same name appearing as "orphans".  I looked around, but saw no conclusive answers.  On the new network SAN is a .vmx file and .vswp and some newspapers and other things. On the SAN original is also the .vmx file, of the regular vmdk, newspapers and 3 hard is named dmotion - scsi0:00, dmotion - Scsi0:01 and DmotionScsi0:02.

I'm afraid that my exchange server is now in limbo.  No idea what I need to do?

    Thank you

When I got SVMotion failures in the past, I had to power off of the prompt and choose full Migration from the menu of the virtual machine.

It was the same for plug-in and RCLI-based failures.

  • Data store 'datastore1' is in conflict with a store of data that exists in the data center which has the same URL (.), but is back different physical storage

    Hello

I am new to vCenter Server, so you can assume that I'm missing something obvious.

I installed vCenter Server 5.5 and one of the two hosts of re-usable ESXi 5.0.0 connected correctly. When I try to connect to the second 5.0.0 ESXi host, I get the error message:

Data store 'datastore1' is in conflict with a store of data that exists in the data center which has the same URL (.), but is supported by different physical storage

I Googled it and found what I think are the best answers that are successful, but they all seem pretty unique in their situation (they have a cluster, I do not have) etc. Some solutions involve disconnecting the store of data and reconstruction of things. I would not make things worse and can live without doubt with the help of vSphere client (and not the web client) until maybe I can start again with a 5.5 installation to a new host once I have back up everything from the host unconnectable. I closed all the VM on the host of the second. I have put in maintenance mode. I've renamed the data store, all to nothing does not.

    Thanks in advance

The problem is that a whole army could not be connected to vCenter due to the problem, the solution involving disconnection of the host apply.

Here is how I solved the problem:

1 use the client vSphere client heavy, connect you to the host that cannot not be connected to vCenter Server.

    2. click on the host computer, and then click the Configuration tab.

    3. click on "storage".

    4. find the offending on the right data store.

    5. right click on the data store incriminated and click 'remove '.

    6. click on 'Add storage' in the top right.

    7. follow the steps to find this data not mounted store. I gave him a new name just to be sure, even if it's probably not necessary.
