STP Portfast =

At VMware KB articles States that all ports on switch with ESX network adapters are related should have STP Portfast =.  This would apply to iSCSI traffic ports as well?

Ideally Yes, but if you have only 1 network card then it does not apply

  • STP: Root port, designated port vs

    Forum

I have trouble understanding the difference between the root port and designated port.  Please read the following definitions of the Todd Lammle CCNA study guide...

Root port - the port of root is always the link connected to the bridge root, or the shortest path to the root bridge.  If more than one link connects to the root bridge, then a cost of port is determined by checking the bandwidth of each link.  The port of lowest cost becomes the root port.  If several links have the same cost, the bridge with lower advertising bridge ID is used.  As several links may be in the same unit, the lowest port number will be used.

Designated - port a designated port is the one that has been determined as the best cost (lowest).  A designated port will be a port forwarding.

I am having some difficulty understanding this and wanted the perspective of someone who can expain the difference between two port types.  For me, it looks like the root Port and designated Port are the same...

Why are they not the same, and what are the differences between all of them?

    Thank you

    Kevin

Access ports are likely to be in the State of return, and in fact you should probably have the command of spanning tree portfast on these ports so that they do not put through the steps of STP, better for them to go directly to the expedition. The designated port must never be an access port. It is a port which is basically a downlink to another switch.

If you are looking for the switch that acts like the root of bridge for the VLAN and then it will show all ports as designated ports because they are the descenders to the rest of the network. If you are in a switch further down the tree covering weight there a port called the root port, which is the path to the root bridge. So if you have a root port State port, it is understood that it is connected to a port that is in a State of designated port. This is the case because the root port is the uplink to the root, and the designated port is the descendant of a lower part of the covering tree. Hope that things cleared up.

    Hello team,

By browsing some examples in the help of tiara, read Excel files. STP files created and used in Script files. I would like to know how to develop these files PLEASE? I have an Excel in *.csv format and I created a data for this plugin how to create file STP for this?

  • DIAdem - import programmatically .csv files with. STP file without dialog box

Does anyone know how to import programmatically with a .csv files. STP file without opening the import box dialog box every time?

I've been through the forum and seen for .xls files and solutions through the help file which is recommended to use the ExcelImport command, but these do not seem to work for .csv file types.  I am currently using the DataFileLoad command to import the files, which works very well to load the .csv files, but it forces me to go to the. STP file for each file.

Does anyone know a better way to import a file .csv programmatically?

Wow... Who had a fraction of the time that does the method of the dialog box.  I'll have to revise the data portion my DiAdem Advanced manual Plugin.

  • Why use of UTP Cable more than twisted pair cable twisted pair cable STP?

Why use of UTP Cable more than twisted pair cable twisted pair cable STP?

    Hi stuckfree,

UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cables are the most commonly used cables for ethernet connections and have a number of advantages. They rely on the effect of cancellation caused by the twisting of the pairs of wires to handle noise, which is uses more than enough for most domestic. They are also smaller than STP (shielded twisted pair) cables, which makes them easier to install, especially in bulk or in narrow spaces. They are easier to install than the sewage and do not require the presence of a ground cable. UTP cables are also cheaper than the STP cables and do not require as much maintenance, since they do not rely on an external display, and can transmit data as fast as the STP cables.

  • Is the spanning tree bpdu filtering on the 5548 "bpdufilter default spanning-tree portfast'

It seems to me as "the protocols spanning-tree bpdu filtering" on the 5548 the same "spanning-tree portfast default bpdufilter" on the switches of the series N - is that correct?  If this is not the case, what is the equivalent command to 'spanning-tree portfast default bpdufilter?

    Ken

They lead to the same result, just with a little different method. N-series bpdufilter search all ports configured for portfast and disables the transmission and reception of BPDUS on these interfaces. With the looks of 5548 bpdufiltering for ports with covering weight tree disabled. There is not a command on the 5548 that will search interfaces in portfast mode and filter the BPDU.

  • Reference Dell Powerconnect 5324/5424 STP Configuration Question...

    Hey guys,.

I have a basic > intermediate understanding of networking. I recently loaded the research in what seems at first sight be an STP issue on our corporate network. Without going into too much detail, I think I found the cause of the problem. Within our network, we have our basic switching infrastructure and then a second pair of switches / second a lot, much smaller network that "needs" to be completely isolated from the base and core STP network.

However, I have discovered recently that this second network / set of switches are not as isolated as we thought. The second, network supposed to be isolated was installed by a 3rd party company - their statements being that the network should be completely independent of our core network and the only link between the two must be access / management connection so that we can telnet to these switches in the network of base if necessary.  However, I recently discovered that these switches on the isolated network are part of our STP! Not only that, but one of these switches is as root (as it has the smallest MAC address). It is through the management / access ports I think of BDPU must be get sent and received. Is there a way that I stop BDPU being sent and received during these management / access of connections between these two networks - therefore isolate the secondary network and making it create two instances of STP - one for the main network and the other for the secondary. We always request the ability to Telnet to these core network switches - I just need to block/filter STP on Internet access / management ports.

Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to read and respond to this.

With protocols spanning tree disabled on the port should not send BDPU frames.

  • Change STP UME in RSTP mode on two stacked powerconnect 6224 configured for iSCSI during normal operation

    Hello

I'll do a fw upgrade during normal operation on a stack of 6224 circulating BPMH, I am currently aware of recommendations Dells run RSTP on switches configured for iSCSI traffic connected to Equallogic SAN.

I intend to set up another pile with two 6224 to failover and then perform the upgrade on the stack of "old." My question is if it's possible to run BPMH on the 'old' stack RSTP executing on the new stack when LAG is configured between the two batteries?

Another option would be if it is possible to reconfigure the 'old' UME to RSTP stack without interruption between the hosts and the SAN first?

Guidance on this subject would be greatly appreciated

    Cree

Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol is based on RSTP and is backward compatible with

RSTP and STP. So, you should be able to run BPMH on the old and RSTP on the new.

  • STP and PowerConnect 5548 battery

    HELO,

I have 2 switches in the stack with HDMI mode. I use these two switches in the access layer.

To connect to the distribution layer, connect to a switch to a distribution layer and unit 2 to another different switch of the distribution layer.

Configure ports in the trunk, but I can not activate PLEASE.
Everything is configured with the same VLAN and the connection works. But the two ports (unit 1 and unit 2) are forwarding.

I have no other battery that switches PowerConnect and working properly.

The HDMI connection is in the tree covering weight? or is it just for internal use, the two switches?

    Thank you

    concerning

The HDMI ports for stacking are not involved PLEASE. When the switches are stacked, they are managed as a single unit.

I wanted to clarify, when you say that you cannot enable STP, does that mean you don't want STP is enabled? Or, when you try to activate PLEASE, it gives an error / will not?

You mentioned that ports 1 and 2 remain in a State of shipping, it's the desired status? What status you are waiting for and why?

    Thank you.

Edge of Type point-to-point: it comes to portfast, any PC, printers, phones, etc directly connected devices you want remote PLEASE computation when a TCN change occurs, to speed up convergence in L2

If the connections between the switches that you can use trunk or access depending on if there are several VLANs don't really matter, just do not use portfast on the trunk of a link never unless it is a switch to a SAN server, never between switches

If you have a HUB on your network I would remove it

  • PortFast to non manageable switch

    Hi Experts,

Recently, I found that, in one of the switches in our environment, portfast enabled an interface which is connected to a switch that is not manageable.

But the 3 servers are conencted to these not manageable switches.

Since this switch is connected to the servers only, there will be no problem, right?

    Thank you

    Vipin

    Jon, Vipin.

Jon is of course right about the fact that the PortFast to another switch shouldn't be allowed.

I see two aspects to this: firstly, whether it will work properly in your network exactly as-is, and second, how he responds to several what-if scenarios.

In your current network to the specific State, it is now, with this switch has a single connection to the switch managed upstream, and have a number of links not forming a loop to devices not running Layer2 transition/bridging between them, using the PortFast does create any problems.

If we start thinking about scenarios of what if (what happens if another uplink is connected to the switch upstream, what happens if someone connects to a cable and deliberately or inadvertently creates a physical loop, what happens if the servers are interconnected and configured with a sort of transition), certainly, the PortFast is absolutely inappropriate because it will allow at least transient loops happen switching , and it is not clear if managed switches will have enough CPU power to recover the loop after it starts flooding images anywhere in the network.

So I would personally put it this way: it is not a recommended scenario, and it is not a best practice approach. And then, in a tightly controlled environment, it's like any other powerful tool which can either help things work better, or will come haunts you return if used inappropriately. It is up to you to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. In any case, having a single switch is a risk enough.

It reminds me strongly of how heard us strongly on my programming course, do not to use the GOTO command. Of course, it allows all kinds of bad things to do. However, there are certain situations where a judicious use of GOTO command simplifies the complexity of code resulting and memory footprint. You can find the used enough GOTO statement often in the code of the Linux kernel, for example - and surely, kernel Linux coders are no lamers in C programming. It's just to know exactly what benefits, disadvantages and risks it involves to use such powerful mechanism. The PortFast to a single switch is, in my opinion, a similar story.

    (2) distribution switches - connected to basic with chest & int switches vlan 40 forming EIGRP neighbor ship with two basic switches - no VLANs hsrp 40 configured on the distribution switches

    (4) access layer switch - connected to the distribution and L2 switches vlan trunk 40 allowed. the gateway to this switch is now based on the HSRP active switches vlan 40 FT

    (5) to access switch the connected port Distribution sw1 - State PLEASE FWD, the other port in State BLK

I would like to check with you, if connection made closed between the access to the distribution of switch 1 switch, STP removes the second port of State BLK and put in forwarding State &

traffic will hit the sw2 basis and reach the gateway IP active HSRP to Core sw1

I would say that he must work very well as long as the path EIGRP cost is in line with your bridge ID switch to designated paths. If you are under equal-cost path and default bridge ID, it can cause some strange paths by default so I think it is your primary consideration.

  • Necessary mandatory STP on wlc?

    Hello

We use several wlc440x that bind each with two links to two different basic switches that are interconnected; one of the basic switches is stp root for all the VLANS.

Is there a need for the wlcs to have stp enabled on their ports? AFAIK they don't bridge between their ports, in my opinion, it is not mandatory.

  • How to track down the STP with SG300-52 questions and SG300-28 - the command debug debug mode password?

    Hello *.

actually, I'm trying to track down and identify serious problems of STP loop to my switch tree SG300-xy.

For further investigation, I would use the CLI debug mode but unfortunately the

    debugging

debug mode command is password protected. I always "DEBUG password: *" :-((

Could someone please help with the password of the SG300-xy switches with 1.3.0.62 firmware debugging it please?

Thank you very much in advance for your help and your response!

    Best regards
    Matthias

Hi Matthias, debugging is to engineer end only, it has no practical use.

Also, if you are unable to go to the debug console, it is unsupported.

I don't know how you can have a loop spanning trees like the tree covering weight stops redundant links. So I think that you are either using BPMH and incorrectly labeled regions or added a vlan incorrect or these switches connect in a device that is not active PLEASE and causing the transfer of issues like that.

Quite honestly if you have a loop of network which is so bad, the best thing to do is to unplug the 1 wire at a time until you see what link has caused.
