Strange call

I just got a call from a gentleman who said he was with the support of Startech and they had received a report of error on my computer (which is possible).  He asked me to allow him to log on to my computer.  Anyone know if it's legitimate?

It's a scam! See...

  • Re: Strange call of "MS Tech Support"

We get these calls to the Canada, too. I received several - three in the last three days. The appellant speaks with a strong accent, does not identify himself at the beginning of the call and when you press on for identification, claims to be call "technical service of Microsoft. The appellant claims that they received my software to internet-related error messages, and if I turn on my computer and share my office with them, they will find the causes of the errors and correct them.  Everyone there had a call with this twist?  Needless to say that I have declined and told them never to call again. Thank you people who have also published their questions and experiences here - it confirmed my suspicions. I'll be contacting PhoneBusters.

  • Strange call of loop on C40

I've seen a few times on a specific C40 systematically, it appears after select Connect conferences, I see it several times again and again in the xhistory.  Our MCU makes all the calls, the codec in the room does nothing, but auto answers the incoming call on the bridge.  The Protocol default call used by the gateway in H.323, the codec is not configured for SIP at this time.  The composition and call back numbers are those of the codec itself.

    Patrick,

My guess is that your endpoint is sitting with a public ip address and the sip scanning applications such as SipVicious are used to detect the possibilities to exploit the PSTN circuits. This may cause your end point to the research as he calls himself.

Of the endpoint, you must define outgoing SIP listening off port and Sip it so that the VCS can still reach the end point.

    xConfiguration SIP ListenPort: Off

xConfiguration SIP profile 1 out: on

Deactivation of ListenPort stops to the endpoint to listen on port 5060/5061. Enabling means leaving all incoming and outgoing calls will reuse the connection open for the endpoint of the VCS in the original SIP Register message.

There are a few changes in TC6.2 to solve this problem. Before TC6.2, if you had the ListenPort on stop and coming out on, this combination of configuration did not always work as expected.

I would like to make these changes on the endpoint and the upgrade to TC6.2 If you can.

I received this call too. It tooks the sofware "ammyy" to take control of my cpu. He also ran the command assoc.

I gave my name, address and email on their site (something like "web2fit"), but I refused to give credit card numbers.

Y at - it a danger? What should I do?

If he came to your computer, you should at least change your password, run a Malwarebytes scan and if there is no personal information on the computer, call your financial institutions, etc.

Never, ever give access to your machine.

In addition to their money get on your part to do anything of any value,
If you leave them in your computer, which knows what losses they did are
    where confidential information they stole.

So if you have done so, I highly recommend that you do both of the following
    immediately:

1 do a clean reinstall of Windows.
    2. change all of your passwords, especially banks or other
    financial sites.

However if you refused to let them in your computer, you're safe
and there is no need to do the foregoing. You can't even
change the password that you did.

I received a call from someone claiming to be a technical support for the windows operating system. They said they were be proactive and helping people fix infected files. This happened to someone else?

Yes.  Microsoft does not know if you have a problem, unless contact you them yourself.  They are * not * first call without something from you.  Like 99% of other businesses - if you use their product and are happy - good enough.

I got a strange call today. The guy calling said it was Windows support and that I had something encrypted in my computer that sent many emails and it would destroy my hard drive if I don't go to my computer and let it guide me through the connection and it allow to correct the problem. What's up with that? I have NOT called Windows with any problem and have had my PC scanned with 3 anti virus and anti malware programs and does not appear in case of problems. I went in my history of scanning and it shows that someone tried to get into my computer but have been blocked several times. Would it be legitimate? The number he called from is 201-338-6150 located in Dumont, NJ (fixed) listed in teleport communications group. Someone advised me that it is. Thank you

Calls unrequested telephone of this nature are almost always a common scam. Do not let them give any info, do not give access to your PC, not give them all the money and do not go to all the websites that they suggest. One moment.

Microsoft issues never not solicited for phone calls of support or security.
