SupportAssist for EqualLogic

Ladies and gentlemen,

My account has a SupportAssist from Dell, which manages about 100 servers, storage EQL 13, 9 PowerConnect switch.

The system has also installed the SANHQ.

So, the surveillance system has two software installed.

1 OME and DSA plugin for OME

2 SANHQ and DSA plugin for SANHQ.

In this case, what is advised on EQL Storage monitoring?

EQL also managed based on MEO and SANHQ.

Hello:

Best practice would be to use SANHQ with the DSA plugin for your EqualLogic storage space. This will give more specific triggers and will be also more flexible as new triggers are added in the future.

In addition to the installation of the SupportAssist plug-in, be sure to activate the SupportAssist function in the SANHQ itself.

Thank you.

We have two switches of N4032F which are stacked and followed almost word for Word from this document.  We do not use DCB.  We are trying to set up a SHIFT and follow-up step 2.11 in the document, but it seems that the SHIFT does not work.

    Switch 1:

    serial interface fortygigabitethernet 1/1/1-2

    No spanning tree portfast

    Switch 2:

    interface series fortygigabitethernet 2/1/1-2

    No spanning tree portfast

However, when it was discovered after changing these settings it shows them as being inactive.

    Can someone please help?

    Thank you

Thanks for the additional information. When the switches are stacked, they act as a logical switch. Then when you plug with an OFFSET you are basically creating a loop and hook up a switch on himself. Desempilement switches and just use the OFFSET for the interconnection of the switch and you should see the GAL go active.

  • Clean shutdown for EqualLogic PS6100 without stopping the host/iSCSI initiator

In fact, I've known the procedure on how to stop the Equallogic PS storage. But I have a question as well as the procedure.

Do you really need to stop the iSCSI initiator or the host connected to the storage before you shut down the storage controller?

Because we move the Equallogic box on the rack on the other. I just want to stop the Equallogic without stopping the hosts.

    Hello

The hosts are connected to some other storage that you want to keep as you move the table EQL?  If you stop the storage, it is similar to pulling on a hard drive in its operation.  Most of the time nothing bad will happen.  But all entries that did not allow the storage is lost.   For applications such as SQL or Exchange is not something you want.

If you need to keep the server up, stop all applications accessing the volumes, then disconnect all EQL volumes first, and then stop the EQL table.  Will be served waiting for the written word.

  • Recommendation of RAID for Equallogic iSCSI SAN?

We look at a Dell/Equallogic PS6000E with 16 drives of 1 TB, it connects to our servers ESX 2-3 (about 15 virtual machines running) and to a SQL cluster (mainly a SharePoint service workload size).  Dell recommends RAID5, which would give us ~ 12 useful to.  Frankly, if we had used 8TB, that would be fine.  Any recommendations for the best RAID for Equallogics level?

    Thank you

    Chad

If you can really just 8 to, I must say raid 10...   Reference Dell suggests always raid 5 no matter what.

Now best practices is to create several groups of disks with different raid levels for the taste of storage at your fingertips.

You are going to have to make some calls to judgment on how to implement.     I suggest you test conversions PtoV tour and play with the config some before deciding, but I know that it is now possible in most cases.

Dell has an excellent white paper on the table.  It's for the MD3000i, but the raid types and most other info still apply to the DAS or san during raids.

  • Management for EqualLogic failover port

    I'm setting up a Dell EqualLogic PS6210XV.
I configured dedicated management interface. When I disconnect the management on the active controller port, it is not automatically switch to the management port on the controller to start (as a port 10 GB of data). Please guide me how to do this fail over automatically.

    Hello

There is no automatic failover with dedicated Mgmt ports.  You will need to either restore a connectivity or a failover on the other controller.

  • Aggregation of links for Equallogic

A few questions on the Equallogic aggregation and link:

The physical cable how can I use to set my Berry of EQuallogic iSCSI on my physical switch Cisco 7 K? 2 or 4?

How aggregation of links can I use: LACP?

    Thank you!

    Hello

EqualLogic doesn't support grouping/collage/LACP, etc...   You must configure MPIO on the guests instead.

  • 10 GB switches for network SAN Eql

    Hello

    We'll buy a new PS4210X 10 GB storage.

We currently have a PS5000, a PS4000E and a PS6100X with 1Gbit Interfaces in the same network. All have their own group. A new will be in its own group.

The network is a ring (a single trunk is open through the Protocol spanning tree) 4 Dell Powerconnect 52XX GBit switch (2 x 24, 2 x 48). 2 switches with 2 tables and 2 servers in a room, 2 1 and 2 in another room.

The switches still have 1-2 years maintenance...

I know the new storage can always run on GBit until we go to 10 GB on the network.

    1. what switches Dell or HP 10 GB would you consider for the new network?

    2. is it possible to buy 10 GB switches and use 1gbit and 10 Gbit customers stand on this switches at the same time?

    3. you would mix the traffic on the physical network with VLAN for your production traffic, or you would still dedicate the entire network for SAN traffic?

    Any other consideration?

    Thank you.

For those customers who are in some longer period of transition from 1 to 10 GbE, we choose BaseT rather than SFP +.  Thus, the following switch model comes in my mind

Force10 s4820 or N4032/64.  Don't forget that you still have 2 switches with good band stacking bandwidth.

    The Force10 comes with 48x10GbE + 4x40GbE. The N4032 have 24 x 10 + 2 x 40 and the N4064 48 x 10 + 4 x 40. Then do the math how many ports you need from the beginning. Stacking is a little less complicated with N40xx the thing (i) VLT on the Force10.

The three models are certified for EqualLogic and we work in a few areas and a customer more have "legacy" servers/devices connected to the new switch gear.

Yes, you should always use VLAN and whenever it's possible traffic stored separately from the rest.

    Kind regards

  • HIT for RHEL 7

When support for RHEL based 7 facilities? We prepare for you present to a RHEL 7 from datacenter and we can't seem to find a HIT for Equallogic

So, ONCE in 2015, is basically what you're saying.

Wow this is a very tight timetable for a company of $60 US per year.

Its been over a year since the last version of Linux has HIT (April 2014) and in terms of support of RHEL7:

«Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (Maipo) is based on Fedora 19, upstream Linux kernel 3.10, systemd 208 and GNOME 3.8.» The first beta was announced December 11, 2013, and a release candidate first aired April 15, 2014. On June 10, 2014 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 was officially released. »

Rhel7 has been officially available for more than a year, none supported yet of Dell.  I hope that Dell realizes that is telling its Linux customers to shop elsewhere.

  • When support for RHEL based 7 facilities? I see in the post of March/April... Now its may?

When support for RHEL/ORACLE 7/7.1 based installations? We prepare for you present to a RHEL 7 from datacenter and we can't seem to find a HIT for Equallogic

not so long ago, the message was 'start-2015'. now "somewhere" later this year

It seems that we should not expect too much from the reliability of this information, most of the time they are simply not true.

  • SupportAssist does not start

I cannot from the Dell SupportAssist on standard Windows Server 2012 program.

At first I installed with OpenManage Essentials 1.2.0 and SupportAssist worked well. Then I had some difficulties to install SupportAssist for Microsoft SCOM and had to reinstall.

After this installation, the SupportAssist program was not able to open. It just starts opens the view host OpenManage. No matter if I start from the computer or from the Extensions list.

SupportAssist service seems to work very well. I tried the removal and reinstallation of the SupportAssist component and also update to 1.2.1 but nothing has changed.

What is the cause and how do I get to begin SupportAssist Dell?

Remove and then reinstall OpenManage and SupportAssist fixed the problem. Thank you very much for the help!

  • EqualLogic Update Notifications

Is there a RSS subscription or other services available that I can subscribe to get the latest updates for EqualLogic software and firmware?

If you have a Support Agreement active for your EqualLogic Arrays, you can configure to receive notifications by e-mail of updates to software and firmware.  Once logged into the site (eqlsupport.dell.com), select the account (at the top at the top next to your name), and then step through the items until you get to "Préférences" and make your choice of what emails you want to receive.

    Please suggest me

A (One) the active controller cable is sufficient. You can use SFP + or thereand.

Connecting to a server (your blade) should also work. Just a 'link' is needed. Once you have bypass the wizard, you can configure the management port option. It also has an uplink, but you can use a normal switch here. After that, you can point your browser to this IP address.

  • Port of heart beat Vmkernal of storage for table Equalogic PS

Dell has just installed a new EQL PS SAN and configured for our 5 x ESXi hosts 5.0U1. Each host has 2 10 GB NIC have inaugurated a vswitch dedicated for iSCSi connections to the SAN. MPIO is via the driver of Dell MPIO add-on.

They are configured so as to VMK 2 ports iSCSi1 ands iSCSi2 1:1 as usual. However, as Dell has left, I came across a Dell/EQL (TR1075-Configure-iSCSI-Connectivity-with-VMware-vSphere-5.pdf) white paper that says that a separate vmk port must be configured to maintain "pingability' of the iscsi ports during failure/failover. This port must have an ip address on the iSCSi subnet and 2 10GB network adapters must be active in the team but are not related to the iSCSi adapter. It should also be the port down vmk not.

The following positions in various net forums seem to suggest this is very important: -.

    http://communities.VMware.com/message/1877959

    http://www.LinkedIn.com/groups/new-guidelines-VMware-iSCSI-65187.S.89647775

    http://sostech.WordPress.com/2012/01/10/iSCSI-multipath-for-EqualLogic-round-3/

If it is there, it is easy to create the additional vmk but how I would make the lowest port without deleting existing ports and access of SAN interupting.

    Kind regards

    Gerry

5.1 ESXi does not resolve the problem, then the kernel of Heartbeat of storage (SHB), is no longer necessary.

However, with ESXi v5.0 you don't have to remove the two ports VMK and start from scratch.  You can unbind the VMK port below via the GUI ESX.  Then, change the network cards so that both are active.   Then create a NEW VMK port in this subnet that has bound to the iSCSI HBA to replace the port lowest VMK used for SHB.
