SYSTEM TOOLS (restore, backup, etc.) have disappeared

I had a virus. I used Microsoft Safety Scanner & Essentials to eradicate the virus.  Then I could not restore or save.  In fact, all functions in the bar of accessories system tools have been removed.  I opened my XP reinstallation CD, but this would not work because windows is the entered PRODUCT KEY inccorrect... I used the correct numbers.   How can I reinstall XP Professional to restore all my system tools?

Before you reinstall, why not give this a whirl:

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, MSE, Comodo, etc..

What problem are you having this thing you that System Restore will remedy - or you're just in practice?  (It should still work).

Some anti-virus / Anti-Malware tools 'protect' your system so that they will not allow a restore of the system work properly.

For example, if you use Norton/Symantec products, you will see a message like this:

Restoration incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored...

It is also a popular Symantec problem (well, I'll be polite and call an "undocumented feature"...), they wrote an article about it:

    http://Service1.Symantec.com/support/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2005113009323013

Depending on what you use for malware protection, you may need to disable the product temporarily, to the restoration of the system, then
    Turn on the product.

Sometimes you need start your system in Mode safe and so that your protection programs are not running, and then do the system restore.

Tips from Microsoft in some of their articles that if the system restore does not restore your computer, start in Safe Mode, and then run the system restore.  Well, it seems to work for some configurations.

System Restore is sometimes so afflicted or Restore Points are suspicious, the best solution is to reinstall your system restore.  This will remove the old Restore Points, but sometimes it's the only way to fix a broken system restore.  You don't have to reinstall XP, only the part of system restore.

Give these ideas some consideration if they apply to you.

Sometimes malicious will afflict your system restore to prevent you to find and remove malware.  It would much rather you trick into thinking that you need to repair or reinstall your XP when it is not necessary.

No matter what you use, I do so and then only begin to solve any problems:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs can solve any problems:

  • After Windows Update: Start, taskbar, toolbar, tools, etc., have disappeared. Disabled Task Manager, programs don't run, etc, etc.

My multi-monitor desktop Win XP through a long Windows update yesterday. Starting this morning, button bar and try to start at the bottom of the screen are no longer present. My table of multi-monitor configuration has changed radically in view/settings. All the tabs on the Task Manager are missing - with the exception of the processes tab. All keyboard and mouse commands have been disabled. To restart, I had to unplug the computer from power. Restart twice again obtained the same results. As there was no apparent way to start programs and features in Windows (Control Panel, Windows Explorer, Manager tasks, etc.) I resorted to a Safe Mode system restore after snatching the lead for the third time.

It seems that a system restore is the only cure for this, and I started this operation. Updates of various sellers require me to use to restore the system several times each month.  I learned to fear the automatic updates for fear that they will cost hours and days of recovery since the "cure" for other ailments that are not obvious to me. The last update all deleted antivirus controls volume and their icons. I have still not got their back. But I digress...
    My questions:
    What I've done wrong?
    Should I disable updates?
How can I make sure that the updates stop disabling my computer?
What are your recommendations to repair the damage?
    Thank you.

    Hi Craig,.

Follow these steps and check if the problem persists.

    Step 1:

I would say you turn off the automatic updates (not recommended however) and install the updates manually ensuring that you will refrain from any installation problem causing updates unless it says "important updates.

    a. log in Windows XP to your administrator account. Click 'Start', then right-click "My computer" and select "Properties".
    b. Select the "Automatic updates" tab and then click on "Turn off automatic updates."
    c. click 'OK' to turn off the automatic updates.

    Step 2:

You can also test the issue in a State of clean boot in safe mode (after installing updates).

Note: Don't forget to restart your computer as usual.

    Hello KCD-622,

Thanks for the response back.  If you have your data backed up on an external device or a dvd, you can always perform a clean install and let it update.

With the boot, you disable the services to see if any third-party service is causing the problem.

    Please let us know status.

    Janelle Hello Holmes,

You're talking about the toolbar for Internet Explorer or the taskbar that displays your programs as well as the date and time you describe?

If you mean the bar tasks, click the thread here for some suggestions that can help restore the task bar.

If you describe the Internet Explorer toolbar, click the following article number.

    Hello CalebCox,

I suggest that you try the methods below to resolve this issue.

    Method 1:

This problem can be caused due to infection by the Virus. I suggest that you run a virus scan on your computer using Microsoft Safety scanner and check if you have the same problem.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Check if you have the same problem in the new user account.

You can refer to the link below, which will give you information on how to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP

    ·         You are not able to see the backup option in the start menu?

    ·         What version of Windows XP you have?

    ·         How you back up the files on the external hard drive?

Windows XP Home Edition doesn't have a default backup option, you must install it manually.

  • Removed the malware system tool, now a problem remove/repair file HOSTS. \etc folder disappears and reappears

Used MBAM to remove SystemTool, I'm prompted to delete, and then replace the HOSTS file.  I can find it in the \etc folder and delete it, but when I use the window "save under" to replace it, I have one establish a path to the extent of the \drivers, and when I click it, there is no \etc folder.  If I restore the HOSTS file and go again to remove it, there are the \etc folder.  Need to market-thru of a fool for this problem.  That's the limit of my computer expertise (or lack of same), so please remember that, in your response.

    Thank you!

This FixIt will allow you to reset your HOSTS file to the default value for Windows:

If you still have problems later, it may be that the threat is always resident (because not all active traces have been removed). I suggest that you post a topic on theForum of Malware MBAM , because experts it can interpret your MBAM log and suggest other programs for analysis that will determine if the system tool is still there or if it came with the other 'buddies' who resisted the abduction:

Here is the preliminary program to produce required, logs before posting, you must run.

Looks like you used a disc at retail to install with the OEM SLP key. An OEM SLP key works with your media recovery of manufacturers. (an OEM SLP key can be activated by normal means).

the simple solution is to change your product key to the one on your COA.
EDIT: Oops. must have been click Start, type slui 3, press on enter

    Additional information:

Computers, which are built by large manufacturers provided with pre-installed Windows are supplied with 2 two product keys:

OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes to the factory. This key is designed to work with the special instructions isn't on the hardware of this manufacturer. Then, when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP (in factory) Windows 7 key leans on the motherboard and he sees special instructions and activates. (that's why you had no need to turn on your computer after you brought it home)

COA SLP: it's the product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or at the bottom, [or in the battery compartment]) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but must be used only in certain situations (for example, if the OEM SLP key stops automatic activation for a reason any). The key must be activated by phone. (Note: all manufacturers that use the SLP OEM system are bound by contract to include a certificate of Authenticity sticker (COA), which has a COA SLP key, on the computer)
