Table of contents - contained in another document

Can't seem to find a solution for this... have two InDesign documents for a magazine - cover and the page file.  My OCD is on the inside cover – but how he generate it with the content of the pages file?  Is this possible?

Yes and easily. Create an InDesign book file and add two files. You can then to things like the table of contents and index that otherwise would be limited to a single document.

I have my paragraph styles, both for the headings in the document, as well as for table of contents entries, and I have them mapped to appropriate levels in the style of Table of contents.

First problem:  When I look at one the resunting table of contents, the entries are sort according to the page they are but not their position on the page.  These entries are contained in different text blocks arranged on each page. Certainly, it must be possible to make it work!

Second problem:  I can't get the function of head of the tab work the same way for two different styles for the same level within the table of contents.  In other words, the page numbering for the style hidden for my headers (placed on layers to hide when the document print) does not justify the right in alignment with the right reason for the numbering of headings unhidden.  I have OCD topics paragraph style in place with a tab on right justify, with a '. Thanks in advance for your help.

The general principle is that ID leans on the upper left corner of the insert text frames and begins with one who is on the left, then moves down. This means that a block of text that begins at the bottom of the page, but whose left edge is more to the left, will be picked up before a frame which is high on the page, but whose left edge is more to the right.

  • Is it possible to have two or more tables of contents in a long document?

I wrote a book in which I created a table of contents listing the sections in the book part i, part two e.g. etc..

Can I now creates the TOC for each part?

    If so, please advise procedure.

    Thank you

You can have a table of contents preceding each section. So, for your Part One article, you place your insertion point before the text in the section first and apply Insert menu: Table of contents: Section.  A new page containing the table of contents will be inserted before each article that you apply it too.

Tested with Pages v5.6.2 on OS X 10.11.5.

  • How to add 'Table of contents' in a PDF document

I want to add to the Table of contents on the first page of almost 100 page PDF document. Adobe has this feature built-in as an Index in microsoft word? Return of pl

No, it isn't, because it's the kind of thing that must be done before you convert your file to PDF.

However, it is possible to create a table of contents based on the structure of your file bookmarks (if it has one), using a script.

  • Generated table of contents contains errors in the sections

I'm working on a large document that was created by someone else. When I try to update the table of contents, there are a few spelling mistakes that are not in the headings in the body of the document (I corrected, but the table of contents are acting as errors are still there).

    For example:

In my paper on page 32, there is a section "Fieldbus Protocol" (he was previously misspelled, such as ' Protochasl ' and I fixed it)

It shows in the generated table of contents: 32 Fieldbus Protochasthe < < so this is to show the 'old' spelling, even though I've updated the table of contents with the page layout > Update Table of contents command.

Is there a code behind (like HTML) for InDesign text which is perceived by the TOC generator? It acts like it is looking 'old' versions of these positions.

    Thank you!

are you sure that this section of paragraph style is used to build the table of contents?

You should check the exact name of the paragraph style that was used in your table of contents

  • How to make a table of contents reflects the document formatting?

I use a table of contents for a long document. In the document, some special words - the titles of the texts that I write about - italic. But when they appear in the Table of contents, they are not. Part of the table of contents and problematic subheadings are shown in the attached images. I can do all the headings / subheadings italics, but I don't seem to be able to reformat the individual words, I can find no option for the table of contents to reflect the formatting of the titles themselves. I'm heading to the last resort of manually typing all the senses...

V4.3 Pages ' 09, or Pages v5.6.1, will resume the paragraph/character in the body of the document style attributes in the generated TOC. To a certain extent, you can customize the table of contents thereafter.

  • How to create a Table of contents of a book as opposed to a single document?

I'm working on a book with several chapters. Each chapter is a separate document joined as well as the rest of the book in InDesign. I have a table of contents in each document, and the hyperlink works very well when the document is exported to PDF. However, I was unable to create a single comprehensive contents table on the front of the book before Chapter 1. I tried everything I know how to create a table of contents for a single document, but that does not work for me with so many documents in the book. Is there something I missed? I'd appreciate any help in this regard.

In the Options section of the Table of contents dialog box, there is a checkbox: Include book of Documents.

What is checked, he must analyze each document in a book for styles to be used in the creation of the table of contents.

  • Indented in the table of contents is not retained in the table of contents of the document

    Hi all

I use RH7 on a Windows XP Professional platform.

I am generating documentation and indentation in the table of contents generated in the document is not the same, not even close, as the project.

I tried to use HTML heading levels maintain checkbox, but while titles fonts are better, indentation in the table of contents for the document is getting worse.

When I disable this checkbox, it will give me a decent indentation in the table of contents, however the fonts used for headings in the document are sometimes more small then one used for normal text.

Does anyone has an idea how I could fix it? I don't want to do too much formatting in the Word document either, because it takes a long time.

    Thank you

Thus in the document that you want to book either title 1 and 2 book 2 and in the table of contents you want this?

As you can see, this is what I have in the TOC and the body is as described above.

If you select HTML to maintain levels, you will always get the above with the titles of books but third topic will become a heading 1, as it should with this option checked.

I maps to a Word template where the TOC styles are defined to be indented as above. Maybe you have to match to a Word template, or if you are, you just need to tweek styles in it.

  • Generate the table of contents with chapter markers?

It has been a while since I had to install and create a table of contents for a long document of single file, but I'm sure that I created TOCs in this way in the past. Then, why the text in the Section markers will appear in the table of contents? It is even possible to generate a table of contents that contains text of article marker?

I use InDesign CS5 in Windows. I have a file single document I'm trying to generate a table of contents for. I designed a 16-page manual in an inDesign file that includes a cover page, table of contents page and seven "chapters."

I created a separate section for each 'chapter' and used Chapter markers in the top of the page master for chapter names. It's something I did in the past of syntactically long documents containing several chapters.

I put the first page of each 'chapter' as a new Section on the Pages panel. In numbering and Section Options for each page, I checked the Section getting started, Automatic Page numbering, the Style of Page numbering: 1,2,3,4... and in Section marker: I put the name of 'chapter' in the text box.

    InDesign_Pages_NumberingSectionOptions.jpg

I've set up paragraph and character Styles and has used throughout my document. When I put in place the table of contents I created everything correctly, including a heading style that I used for all the sub lines in my file and my style of Section marker for chapter names.

    InDesign_TOC.jpg

When I insert the table of contents, generate headers sub with their page numbers, but the titles of the chapters which are chapter markers do not generate. Am I missing something or is it still possible to enter the text of chapter markers in a table of contents? I'm sure that he's worked in the past. Can anyone offer a solution for this?

    Thank you

    Kat

Looks like the markers section present only in the table of contents if they are on a document page. Try manually to the substitution of the frame.

  • Table of contents trees in sync with the hyperlink navigation

A requirment for the project that I am working on is to create a process mapping (check) that links to court documents (check, using the hyperlink map).  Everything is good, but the table of contents in the left pane should open/tree on the document which jumped through the hyperlink.  Is there a way to RoboHelp 9 (update tomorrow) to synchronize the table of contents of the opened document?

    Hi Rob

Your car and you say "HTML" is the exit that's like asking what brand of car tell us that it's a car.

However, did you also say that "it is the exit for the company intranet" so that hopefully narrow down the choices a bit. So I guess here is that it is either WebHelp and FlashHelp helps Web Based AIR.

I choose WebHelp here. If it's something different, you can come back and tell us, or possibly you will see what I'm showing here in the dialog box and who can help with another type of output.

  • Table of contents imported as the overlay of text have no active hyperlinks in PDF format

    Hello

The model that I inherited uses a method in which the table of contents appear in the main FM as an insert text imported doc. To create the table of contents, a table of contents in autonomous is created and then imported as a text box to the specific location in the main file. When this FM file is saved as PDF hyperlinks in the page table of contents do not work.

-Am I doing something wrong, or is - what a limitation of text import crashing like OCD?

    Thank you

    Donna

For reasons specific to my application, I use books with a Table of contents file that imports the TOC file generated as a text overlay. And hyperlinks in the PDF file. I understand that, in general, the links in text ads that link outside of themselves are not active in the PDF file. But for some unknown reason, the links in my Table of contents work in the PDF file.

So, I tested your case. I created a standalone table of contents for a single document (be sure to select create hyperlinks in the Set Up Table of contents dialog box) and then it imported by reference into the document. I created the PDF (print to the Adobe PDF printer) and the links work perfectly.

Make sure that you have selected data Acrobat generated in the print dialog box, and THEN select make named Destinations in the links in the PDF Setup dialog box tab.

I have also heard that if you apply a format of characters in a line in the table of contents, links will not work in the PDF file. It is another thing to check.

  • Multiple contents in the same document (ID CS3)

I am currently in the middle of our annual report (first time with a really major document like this ID) - and so I'm a little green in the area of production of large document.

The annual report is divided into different sections (1 Sec, 2 Sec and so on). On the first page of each section, I need to have a table of contents, built (title 2, title 3) relevant paragraph styles in the section concerned.

I thought you could just add in another table of contents of page layout > Table of contents, but it seems that you are not allowed a table of contents in a single document.

So, is it possible to have several s TOC in a single document ID, and if so, how should I do this?

If not, what method/procedure should be used to achieve the desired result?

    Thanks in advance,

    Michael H

It is possible to have more than one table of contents in a book. Works very well since each chapter is a single InDesign document.

I'm working on a "long" document (about 200 pages), which is divided into 12 documents. He had to have a TOC referenced each chapter (main table of contents) and a level of chapter TOC for each chapter.

    Intro/Main TOC

Chapter 1 (with table of contents)

Chapter 2 (with table of contents)

    etc.

Chapter 10 (with table of contents)

    Annex

The main table of contents search styles of paragraph through the entire book.

The look of the table of the contents chapter level for styles of paragraph in their chapter.

I created this in CS2 and I am currently working on the updates to CS4, so I am relatively sure that it would work in CS3, too.

If you are not familiar with InDesign books (File > New > book...), and how they relate to long documents, look for them in the help file or visit Michael Murphy The InDesignerwebblog. It has a series of podcasts of long documents that you may find useful.

  • RoboHelp 2015 (12.0.2.384): The search returns topics do not are included in the table of contents

ENVIRONMENT: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1, 8.00 GB of RAM, 64 - bit OS, Office 2010, Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Acrobat Reader DC 2015.017.20050

    DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:

    • A single RoboHelp HTML project with three exits. One of the outputs is a 'validation' reference that has its own Table of contents.
    • Validation reference Table of contents contains a subset of the subjects in the main help system. For example, the help system main table of contents contains a folder named 'Administration '. This folder is not in the table of contents of reference for Validation.
    • The reference of Validation is displayed on a public web site. Therefore, we applied the tag "Non_public_info" contained in the topics shared that we do not want to appear on the public website.
    • WebHelp parameters are:
      • Validation reference TOC
      • No map file, no sequence to browse
      • Conditional compilation expression: NOT_Non_public_info_AND_NOT_StyleGuidelines_AND_NOT_TRP (we keep our Style rules in the project to facilitate access during development. TRP content must be rejected because it was not released.)
      • Exclude non referenced topics of output is selected.
      • Search options. Only 'Show Total number of search results' and 'View AND search Option in outputs' are selected.
    • After generating the WebHelp, we remove the files that we don't want (RoboHelp generates empty folders, even if the files are not in the table of contents.)

PROBLEM: A search in the help of Validation reference reveals the topics that we think should not be included because the subjects themselves are not in the table of contents of Validation reference. For example, the section "Data quality analysis" is in the main table of contents help, but not in the table of contents of reference for Validation. Therefore, we do not expect the topic appears in the search results pane at all. But he does. When the user clicks on the subject, the "Resource not found" message appears.

Nothing shows the topic Style_Guidelines because the StyleGuidelines label conditional construction applies to the entire folder and the "Style guidelines" book in the main table of contents. (Same thing for the TRP folder).

QUESTION: Why are topics which are not in the table of contents and whose records are not in the project at all appearing in the WebHelp during a search? We need to rewrite the expression of conditional compilation or establish conditions differently. We assume not have topics in the table of contents, not including the topics not referenced in the output, and remove empty folders would be the way to go. Any help is welcome!

    Thank you very much.

    Carol Levie

The table of contents does not control what ends up in the output for output online. All content tagged and tagged content which is not excluded by the expression of construction will be included. The parameter 'Exclude topics not referenced output' more exclude all subjects which are not in the table of contents AND are not related to any topic which is included in the output.

On the other hand, for the print output the table of contents control which is found in the output. I think that it will fire a lot of people.

If you generate the help and that you do not remove the unwanted files, do you still have the error? If this isn't the case, you know that the topic is referenced somewhere in the content of the reference of the Validation.

Here is the help of RH11. I can't imagine it would have changed, but you could do a search to verify a second time for RH2015.

    Exclude output not referenced topics

Select this option to exclude any topic that exists in the project, but is not the default theme in page layout or is not referenced table of selected contents, index or sequence to browse, or any referenced subject.

Note: RoboHelp shows the topics not referenced that are excluded from the output in the output view module.
