Installation of window on Portege M200

Hello

I recently got a Portege M200 by a friend, but the operating system has become corrupt (so why I got it)

I I copy of windows xp, I want to install but the significant problem of the M200 series having no cdrom or floppy :(

I have a cdrom usb but descovered the m200 can't stand not to boot from usb either... and without an installed operating system can find no way around that.

I noted that support booting from a network, but it have no idea how get this to work.

I was wondering if anyone knows how the network boot? or failing that if anyone can think of any other way to get an operating system installed on this pc it would be great.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Luke

> have I copy of windows xp I want to install but have quite major problem of the series M200 having no CD-ROM or floppy drive

Yes, it's very annoying!

> I have a cdrom usb but descovered the m200 doesn t support start from usb either... and without an installed operating system can find no way around this

It is not possible to boot from USB CD/DVD rom. If you want to boot from the CD/DVD drive, you will need one that can be connect to the port cardbus (32 bit) or PCMCIA 16 bits.

> I noticed that support booting from a network, but it have no idea how get this to work.

Yes it is possible but very complicated because you need to install the RIS server on the second computer. I don t think you have enough experience to do something like that.

Maybe you can take a look in this thread:

  • Can not install Windows on Portege M200

    Hello
I bought a Portege M200 opportunity. I discovered that the HARD drive was broken, so I bought a new one, plus a (160 GB)
I know the problems Porteges can do when triing to install the OS on them, so I used this tutorial for installation of the network:
    [http://blog.ryantadams.com/2008/02/01/how-to-boot-from-the-network-pxe-boot-with-tftp-and-windows-pe/ | http://blog.ryantadams.com/2008/02/01/how-to-boot-from-the-network-pxe-boot-with-tftp-and-windows-pe/]

everything worked well. then, my xp installation 'button' was grey, so I went with this tutorial:
    http://blog.ryantadams.com/2008/07/30/option-to-install-Windows-is-grayed-out-when-running-network-install/

that worked well, too. The installer kopies some files and the desire to do a restart. So he brought me to Windows PE, I typed 'wpeutil reboot' as described in the second tutorial. My PC has started again and then nothing happens.
I chossed "boot from HDD" and all I can see is a black screen with a small flashing underscore white top.

IT IS REALLY FRUSTRATING. I also tried another method, for example the back of things (like I got [my R100 to work | http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=120473]), with the same result.

Thanks a lot for your help!

You have a smaller HARD drive you can try?

The M200 may be limited to 120 GB HDD due to the LBA48 137 GB limit. More info here: http://www.48bitlba.com/

Ultimately, you must use the original Toshiba Portege M200 recovery disk to reinstall Windows. You can order from Toshiba https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • Cannot start the installation of recovery for Portege M200

    Hello

I've used the DVD of recovery a long time ago, but now he won early t. Instructions tell you to:
    1 insert the disc
2nd turn the pc on while keeping the key C pressed
    3. follow the instructions that appear on the screen

I tried as indicated but nothing happens and windows starts normally. I also tried to open the DVD when the pc is on and I can see the files but can t start the process.

Can someone help me solve this problem?

    Hello

have you tried to boot from the DVD? Of course, you can see the files on the DVD, but perhaps you need to change the boot order so it starts on the DVD instead. To do this, restart the computer, and then press F2 when you see the Toshiba logo on the screen during startup (F2 or which key it tells you to press to enter setup).

Move to the boot order in the BIOS setup and exchange the CD/DVD with the HARD drive so that the CD/DVD is top of the list. Go into the menu of the BIOS Exit Saving Changes and the computer will reboot. I hope that the recovery DVDs should start now, if it works and the completion of all facilities to return to the menu of the BIOS and follow the same instructions to change the CD/DVD in the second and put the HARD drive to the top of the list.

I hope that answers your question.

  • Portege M200 BIOS update running Windows 7?

    Hello

I recently took a Portege M200 and installed (via PXE - network installation) Windows 7 above. I want to upgrade the BIOS as is always in the original BIOS (1.1). I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install through Windows but it says that my OS is not supported. I don't have an external CD drive or floppy drive - how do I update the BIOS? I tried to put it on a USB key, but it doesn't seem to be an option to boot from USB.

    Thank you!
    Jerry

    > I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install through Windows but it says that my OS is not supported. I don't have an external CD drive or floppy drive - how do I update the BIOS?

Seems that BIOS cannot be updated because Win 7 is not officially supported on this good old classic.
However, AFAIK the VAP (value added package) is required to run an update of the BIOS. So, try to install the VAP. Choose this tool which is available for other models of laptops.

  • Portege M200 with Windows 7

    Hello

I managed as probably many others to get Windows 7 on a Portege M200 the application screen with 7 key is amazing by the way. However my question is how much can I sell this for as I noticed there are not on eBay and still less one with windows 7 on it as it is rare that I personally wouldn't be able to rate b and I was wondering how much would you pay for such a rare piece?

I agree with Akuma. Portege M200 is old model of laptop, so the best thing you can do is sell in original condition with original installation disk.

To offer it with Win7 no sense for me because this old notebook is not supported for the new operating system to Win7 and it is not possible to use it as the original operating system with all Toshiba tools and utilities.

Now im wondering if theres some sort of special installation process or something of the sort for the M200?

I hope someone can help me with my problem.

    Hi mate,

What version of Windows XP you are trying to install? Windows XP Professional or Tablet edition? You have the available recovery? If Yes, then you should use it :)

If not, you should check if there could be maybe something with the Tablet thing. It s just a hint, so I'm sorry that I Don t have a real good solution...

    Dear Ment0r

what your BIOS Setup? I must say that the hardware is configured by the operating system.

Normally XP tablet should discover the keyboard without problems. What type of keyboard you have, German or international (there the umlaut?)

In Device Manager, (right-click on "My Computer", select Properties, then hardware, Device Manager), is a current keyboard? Try uninstalling (right mouse button) and then perform an Action-> Scan for hardware changes.

I hope that you will be able to solve it, please let us know how you rate...

  • Portege M200 - unable to access the recovery console

    Hello

Yesterday my software anti-virus let me know that a virus was trying to access my computer, had quarantined it and claimed a reboot of my Portege M200 to remove it completely. Restart, the laptop is not actually restart and just hung. It gets past the Toshiba window and crashes. I tried to start in safe mode but nothing helped. It starts to load files and crashes to a particular system file that is obviously now corrupt. I tried to enter my recovery console using Windows XP Recovery discs, but was unable to do so. The discussions on this forum have been useful, however I still have not solved the problem.

I have my product recovery DVD-ROM, but I'm afraid to use it as the next warning with her said that reformatting will lose all my work and I do not know if it will automatically reformat my hard drive (which I have no back ups of my work) or I will give a choice? Also, I see BONES of your forums, that it will correct not actually of corrupted files. I've also seen queues to make an image ghost on a floppy drive but I don't have a floppy drive on my Portege M200.

Can someone please provide me with the steps to solve this problem, as I am of 11 hours trying to solve this problem, but nothing helps!
    Thank you

You are right about image recovery. Recovery image is designed to clean BONES only and there is no option for the repair of the BONE. What you can try is to get the disc of Microsoft WXP installation and Startup Repair option.

I hope this will help you and you will be able to boot OS preinstalled. If it will work on the first back up all your important data.

  • Portege M200 - bought on Ebay and frustration comes

    Hello

I m new here and I want to ask for a warm welcome. I purchased a M200 on Ebay and he received two days before. The M200 hasn t had a DVD player and I have no recovery CD or software for my Toshiba. I have a Toshiba external slimline PCMIA CD-ROM, but more of him later.

I found a lot of information based on this topic, but really nothing has worked for me, that article why I ask my questions here. So far, I'll tell you what I tried...

I bought VISTA Home Premium and want to install on my M200.

    On my M200 FreeDOS short.

    I tried:

    1. use my USB drive as a floppy using a HP tool that simulates a USB drive as a disc of floppy (FDD). I ve a copy all the contents of the Vista DVD for my USB. Then I ran the BIOS on the M200, select FDD as first boot option, but nothing happens, it still start FreeDOS.

What I'm doing wrong, Boot USB (diskette) works on the M200?

    2. as there is an external Toshiba CD Player included in my M200, I thought the first installation of a Windows XP disk. In the first period the player seems to not work, but after some time, it worked and I put my Windows XP on it. He loaded the disc, and the typical blue screen for the start-up of the plant came. But after a few seconds he stopped and said "could not read the data xxxxxx.xx, error 7. I tried two more times and same error appeared, only that it was another file that could not be read, and another error number.

    I read and I don't know if it's true:

I have red somewhere that I can only install Windows XP which was used on the recovery CD from Toshiba (that the CD was not included in my M200). So I can't use for OS install the recovery CD and any other normal XP CD?

Or is there an error with my external CD drive? Currently, it doesn't work again...

    3.

I have red the following link to install Vista on M200 by a PXE server:

    http://flimflan.com/blog/InstallingVistaOnYourToshibaM200.aspx

    and this one

    http://home.allegiance.TV/~joem298/

The first link says I can go point 13 of the second link:

Umbrella and that's what bothers me. They tell me. Turn on your Toshiba M200 and press F2 to select the network. I press F2, but nothing happens, I see the Toshiba logo but nothing happens... If I press on enter, then come back to FreeDOS...

Also on the second link, I tried to start from the point 1. But in point 5, the word:

Unzip the contents of "BFD package full v1.0.7.zip" in a temporary directory. Open a command prompt and navigate to the temporary folder. Run the command "bfd msnet" in order to create the startup disk.

I don't have a floppy drive. They tell me to run bfd.msnet from the command. Cmd.exe command is? If Yes, what should I type in to get bfd.msnet run?

I knew that installation would be very difficult and I kindly ask for personal assistance. If you can speak German, it would be nice to answer in German.

    Hello

As you can see in this thread, you can install Vista on the Portege m200 and it works fine:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?MessageID=73510𑼦

The point is you need a PCMCIA compatible CD/DVD drive to boot from the Vista DVD.

Akuma is right. For the time being, you can use Windows 7 for testing purposes. Official Windows 7 will be support begins when Microsoft, it offers for sale. So far, Toshiba or any other manufacturer offer some Windows 7 compatible drivers.

  • How to get off the Vista of Portege M200?

    Hello

I inherited Portege M200 from my boss, and he has updated using an external DVD from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate. Slow as a slow thing, very few pilots etc, meant that I am determined to go back to XP Pro.
I (128, 1 Gig and 2 gig options) SD cards and USB HP dvd1040e external drive, and XP Pro Tablet records.

I tried to select the devices to boot from the toshiba start screen, selecting SD or external DVD, but nothing helped. I changed the boot sequence in the Bios (hit escape and F1 at startup screen spalsh) and tried all combinations. I copied the image file to $TOSFD00.vfd on the SD card.

I managed to loop the machine, in all configurations, so that I just get support PXE-61 test failure, check cable PXE - MOF existing boot lines agent, then go to the Boot Manager Windows asks me to insert the windows installation disc as winload.exe may be damaged or missing. I removed the drive, checked that the winload.exe is present on the HARD disk, it is, and it is in its original version / size / format the date created.

Someone at - it a suggestoin which stops me pulling my hair?

If you want to start from the CD or DVD you need a compatible external CD/DVD drive! Without that player you will not be able to reinstall Windows XP from the CD!

But the boss installed you the Vista operating system by using the external drive. Why you n t use the same drive to reinstall the XP?

The install form SD card is not possible! And if you want to install the image using the LAN you must configure a server

  • Vista on Portege M200 - some problems with nVidia display driver

    Hello

I recently decided to update and perform a clean installation of Windows Vista on my Portege M200, now that Toshiba have released official drivers for this machine.

Everything works fine, EXCEPT the nVidia display driver. I have the following questions with the driver Toshiba provides for this machine (97.52 version):

    (1) when the screen turns off to save power, the backlight does NOT turn off. Screen turns off but the backlight will stay lit.
    (2) for the recovery of the standby mode, the backlight is OFF. You must use the shortcuts Fn-F6/F7 to change the backlight level manually, that will bring him back.
    (3) external monitor does not work (with command Fn + F5 or nVidia control panel). External display is always blank.
    (3) video playback in WMP is very chopped (a secondary concern for me).

Is there a chance that Toshiba could finally get a updated driver that would set out the? That would really make this machine fully functional in Vista.

Thanks in advance for any help or information.

    Null value

    Hello

    > Are there opportunities that Toshiba could finally get out an updated driver?
I noticed that from time to time new updates of pilot (any series of notebook) are released on the European driver Toshiba page and, therefore, I m optimistic that new updates are available

But note; usually, various problems can be resolved by installing some patches MS Vista and missing patches.
Then visit this [MS update website | http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us] and check if all the patches are installed.

  • Portege M200 will not install product recovery.

    Hello.

I have a laptop Toshiba Portege M200 (model No.: PPM20A-00LG4). Three years ago, that I ran the recovery of products and records program to get a new install of XP Pro. Then I loaded all service packs of the internet. Very well, everything worked fine and the perfermed the laptop.

Recently, the laptop was quite slow, so I decided to do it again.

I booted the laptop on the program of recovery on the external CD-ROM drive. He reformatted the HARD drive, etc. I then installed the product recovery CD four amount requested by the installation on screen menu and the laptop seemed to accept them. Then, when invited to "Remove the disk from the drive and press a key" the laptop restarts but does is display a white blinking cursor against a black screen, for hours. Nothing happens.

After pressing a button to restart, the Toshiba flash appears with different sources of boot, the HARD drive is first, then just the blinking cursor. I tried to re - start the laptop but get the same routine and then the blinking cursor.

I'd appreciate really no clue to the diagnosis.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hey,.

The blinking cursor means that the operating system can t be started. To me it sounds like that, something was wrong during the installation of Windows.

I recommend reinstalling Windows if more boot of the Toshiba Recovery disk and follow the instructions on the screen. In other words, do the same steps that you have already done and check what happens.

Such things as installation doesn t work properly can occur without any particular reason. So, don t you worry and just test it again. ;)
