  With the workload that you mention, only one processor (E5520 or better) should be enough. However, you will need to ensure that it meets the requirements of the customer. What I would probably want to start with is:

  Material:

  • 1 x E5520 (or better) CPU
  • 1 x Player DVD (otherwise, ILO)
  • 1 x RAID controller P41x with 1 GB FBWC
  • n x SAS hard disks 10 k/15 k (number of disks depends on your needs in capacity and e/s)
  • 4 x 8 GB memory (it works with a single processor and you can distribute modules if you plan to install a second processor later)
  • 2 x power supplies

  Maybe you can get a 'Performance' model for a good price. These models already include 2 CPUs, DVD player, 2 power supplies, RAID controeller/FBWC...

  BIOS settings:

  • Intel Virtualization Technology (VT - x) - active
  • No Execute Disable Bit - active
  • Profile - static high power Performance

  Installation of comments:

  • Windows Server 2003 aligns partitions to 63 blocks (31.5 KB) by default. For better disk performance consider to preconfigure the partitions with an alignment of partition of 1 MB (the default value for the most recent versions of Windows).
  • Start at the bottom with the vCPUs supply you for guests and only increase the number of vCPUs if necessary.

  You simply take a look in the manual of the user that was preinstalled on your laptop.
  On my laptop, the operating manual has been preloaded with too, and I could find all the necessary information concerning the upgrade of RAM.

  The manual says you can use PC2-5300 modules if the A300 would support the RS690M/PM965/GM965 chipsets. But if the laptop is equipped with Intel GL960 chipset, so you can only use the PC2-4200 modules.

  Using the Intel GL960 chipset you can extend the RAM to 2 GB (2 x 1 GB RAM)

  My L500-126 graphics card is ATI mobility HD4650, after the upgrade to windows 7, I have 3 choices for the graphics card driver:

  I tried these 3 options and they all worked.

  Best choice is to use the supplied drivers Toshiba. These drivers are tested and optimized for some portable model.

  Win7 driver update can not work properly and all screw up the pre-installed driver.

  Original ATI driver is not optimized for your laptop model and can force a graphics card to run on the limit.
  Which can end with overheating or damage equipment.
  It is also possible that the official ATI driver cannot be installed on your laptop.

  Not perfect, but the best solution and faster that I found after extensive research on Google.
  Basicely, off, remove the battery AND power cord for 10 seconds and restart.
  Works every time.
  If this happens to you, if possible, leave the battery permanently, stop computer.
  Power cord to UNPLUG.
  Restart after 10 seconds (plug back in obviously) guarantee all the USB work.

  And by the way: do so radically to extend your battery life when you really need it. Store in a dry place at room temperature, with approximately 50% of charge. (just reload once a while)

  A cheap goal, preferably the "kit" lens supplied with your camera.
