the desktop icons do not work

All the icons and even folders do not work when I click on them.  If I right click on the icon or the folder it open quickly as before.

Is there an associated process that should run to facilitate icons to work?

Hi DelZavala,

There are several things to try, and I recommend doing them in the order presented.

If you can access the internet somehow, if you use XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm and scroll to the EXE and click, or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations. Once done, do the same for LNK entry. That should restore your programs.

If it does not (although it does in general), try the following article (which is essentially what precedes, but made by hand): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923077.

Try a clean boot in XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit at the origin of the problem. Follow the procedures described in the article. Once found, remove, delete, disable or uninstall. Once don't forget to reset your system back to the normal state, as described in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal and reboot - this solution will not work.

If this problem started recently, try a system restore to a point before the problem.  Here are the steps for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084.

I hope this helps. Otherwise, back post and we will look at in other less likely but possible options such as infection or corruption of system files - but I honestly think one of the above will do the trick for you.

Good luck!

You see only your background image and the wallpaper?

Miss all your desktop icons and you don't see the taskbar at the bottom of the screen or are simply missing icons and you can see the taskbar at the bottom?

Check the simple things first.  Right-click on an open space on your desktop, choose Arrange icons by and make sure the option show desktop icons has a check mark next to it.  This will work if you don't miss you that the desktop icons, but still see the Start button and the taskbar.  If you are missing as the Start button and the taskbar, which isn't your problem.

If only you can see your wallpaper background picture and don't see the desktop icons and no start button or taskbar, this means that the explorer.exe program does not run (and it must be running) or the explorer.exe program are usually afflicted.  A good way to think about at the moment, it is that the process explorer.exe "is" your desktop.

First, you need to get your work desk in order to have room for manoeuvre, then you can solve your problem of potential malware.

Of your background image, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and open Task Manager.

Look at the processes tab and if the process explorer.exe is not running, start it as follows:

In Task Manager, click file, new task, and in the Open box, enter:

Click OK and see if get you your office.  If you get an error, we need to know what it says.

If you notice that the explorer.exe process is already running in the Task Manager, highlight the explorer.exe process, and then click end process to stop and start a new explorer.exe process as described above.

  • The desktop icons do not respond after the use of IE

    Hello

Anyone got a solution for this? When the computer is turned on I can use the icons on the desktop, no problem. However, after I used Internet Explorer from the desktop icons don't respond well the pograms can be opened from the start menu. As the recent problem I tried uninstalling some updates recently installed, without solving the problem. Using Windows Vista and IE9

After that I used Internet Explorer from the desktop icons do not respond

Does that mean exactly?   For example, what do you see?   For the best answer to this question, you could use ProcMon and know what modules are involved when you do what these are.   ;  )

However, without using ProcMon you can check with the Manager task or resource or ProcExp monitor if there is always a hidden background iexplore.exe processes running or anything related to IE which started as a result of your using IE.   If so then try to kill these processes.   Etc.

Related to this, you could also consider what you used IE before your symptoms occurred.   This means that would understand that make your "desktop icons" and change it to something more neutral.   For example, if you had clicked on was a shortcut Internet (aka the .url file) that requires a network connection, change for people who only runs locally, such as about: blank.   So if you could close the window that has opened and always use the shortcut you would have refined your description of symptom to involve the network connections.

Related to that, would be your security package, for example, some are trying to act as a hidden proxy to "analyze" the HTTP traffic.   Then the problem would not be IE but the hidden proxy.  Etc.

You can't wait for a "fix" until you have a fully understood symptom.   More details and diagnosis is necessary IMO.

  • Internet Explorer hang ups and the desktop icons don't work

I have a 32-bit Vista, which has worked perfectly for almost 4 years until yesterday. Freeze the icons on my desktop and internet explore cannot open any other web site, after having opened the first web site. Once you close the web site, and then try another icons do not work for short cuts. The taskbar remains functional. I have to go into the Task Manager to close Explorer which rest spinning means that it cannot open. I tried a system restore to two days ago and he said there is a mistake, and he couldn't change my settings. Then I went to windows defender under programs to view current programs and I found several programs window internet explorer running even though in Task Manager, they were removed. Once I erased these stars, the icons would work, but only for the first attempt. Then I went to the Windows Defender and 2-3 lines of windows internet explorer is numbered. Why is this happening? For every time that you access internet prgrams multiple of the same are running and then hang up the entire internet and shortcuts icon freezing. Help, please.

    Thank you

Success!  All I had to do was reset internet explore windows. Fortunately, this did not clear all of my passwords or settings which I expected. The only change I noticed was the size of the screen. I had to change to fill the computer screen. I don't have to do a system restore.

Thank you and thanks for your replies to bab66.

    Hi AmyWilliams,

    1. you remember to make changes to the computer before this problem?

2 are you able to open the program when you right-click on it and select open?

    Step 1:

You can check the following link and try to run the Fixit and check:

Difficulty of broken desktop shortcuts and common system maintenance tasks

    Step 2:

Given that this issue has started recently, you can also try a system restore and check.

You can try to perform a restore of the system to a prior restore point you have been affected by the issue.

Note: When you perform the system restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you have installed are removed.

To run the system restore, you can consult the following link:
