  Do a right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "playback devices".  Left click the device once to highlight default (it is usually 'speakers and headphones') and then click the properties button.  Click the enhancements tab and put a check mark in the box next to "disable all improvements.  Click on apply to save the changes and then click OK in all other windows and see if allowed at all.

Before SP2, I lose sound when VISTA is in standby mode. He would then turn off the stereo speaker and replace the digital output device driver... Now, since I update the drivers, I have no sound on my speakers if I use not his for a long time, if I restart the noise comes back, but if I do not use anything his bound for awhile and then try to use it again, it disappears.

  The solution that I found (to restart the computer every time), is that if I click on the vloume icon in the taskbar and then click on the speaker icon that opens "speakers and headphones properties" and then click OK in the window that opens, the sound comes back.

  Downloaded the latest drivers Realtek and installed - DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK.

  Deleted the latest drivers and install them from the CD of motherboard drivers - DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK.

  I disabled all audio devices, hoping that speakers will then - DO WORKS not ALWAYS. Help, please...

  There is not currently an option within the OS to achieve.
  However, your drivers audio pourrait have a built-in effect that allows you to reverse the stereo sound. If you do not see a separate application to manage your sound, you will need to visit the website of the manufacturer of your sound card and install the latest drivers.

  Go read the information, click on the 'Options' tab, then change the drop-down list of "sort of media" to "Music" to "Audiobook". That worked for me, I hope that it helps you also.
