The ESX of NetApp SAN startup...?

I'm new to NetApp and my Director wants us to start our SAN NetAapp ESX host.

What should I do from a point of view ESX 4.0?

What are the benefits that they hope to achieve by having the option of SAN boot?  If thye want servers without hard drive, so I'd say go with a Flash drive and running ESXi on that... should provide the same benefit for performance and reliability.

You will need to to boot from SAN ISCSI or HBA Fiver and when it comes to the use of netapp I'll never anything other than NFS to ESX... unless someone is holding a gun to my head.

    Hi all

    Please help on this

How to find and configure the fiber channel SAN disks on the ESX Server

    Concerning

    Vijay

Assuming that you have configured LUNS on your storage space itself you will need to ensure that the ID in the world of fiber HBA on the host ESX (you can see them registered against fiber HBA under storage adapters, WWID) are configured on the switch of fiber access (read and write).

In the VI Client connected to your ESX host, select the storage adapters tab and highlight the Fibre HBA. Right-click and select Rescan. If you have correctly configured the SAN and the Fibre switch, then the LUNS now appear under the fiber HBA. Go to storage and select Add storage. Follow the wizard through to add LUNS and VMFS format. Do this for each ESX host that you want to see the LUNS.

  • Strange when network problem the ESX servers powered

    Hello.

First of all, do not know if this is the right forum but I hope you can help.

I have a question where to chance the firewall stops responding during a small number or a host/pcs/physical server randomly on my network. This problem started since the launch of VMware and two ESX servers. I think that its a problem ARP as erasing the NIC ARP cache on the windows computer that has trouble to the solve the problem temporarily. A permeant fix is to cut the ESX servers, which is obviously not a solution.

Ive changed the firewall's Pack but have the same problem. Any thoughts on what to check on ESX to see what is the cause? My ESX servers currently have a unique NETWORK card on the LAN vSwitch for simplicity and a distinct vSwitch for 10 gb iSCSI, which is directly connected to the San. Very simple.

    Thank you

    Ive found my problem.

My SAN, a HP MSA2040 manages a network of 192.168.200.x for internal use according to HP support. Even if id changed IP address of management to another network that it stills works this range. Therefore, the map was updated to the ARP tables and sending request to the bad MAC/IP who just happened to be the IP address of my gateway to some network hosts. Crazy stuff.

  • Connect the ESX host and data store on another ESX host

    Hello

    assuming for this scenario:

    Host ESX 1: esx1

    Host ESX 2: esx2

It is possible to mount esx2 datastore in esx1? (For example: via NFS). Of course, it is possible use a NAS/SAN intermediary, but I wonder if it is possible to achieve a direct mount.

    Thank you

    Eddie

Well, to allow another host to share the local data store, the host must be able to act as an NFS server. The problem is, there is no service in one of the ESX version which able to serve that. So, as said what a.p., no, is not possible.

  • Movement of data warehouses from the local storage to SAN virtual computer

    Hello

I have a few VMs that must be moved on our SAN, they are on an ESX 3.5 stand-alone server.

It seems that the best way to proceed would be to:

    1. turn off the VMs system.

    2. copy and paste all of their files on the SAN data store configuration.

    3. right click on the vmx files, add them to the ESX cluster.

    4. create a new ID when asked.

    5. turn on them and let it run.

Am I missing tips here? In this way, I still have the original VMs back if something breaks down - they will have a new ID created and if all goes wrong, I can just stop them and the power on the 'old'.

Any help/advice appreciated as (as always) here are important to keep servers to work correctly!

    rudybrewster wrote:

Thnaks for the answers, I'll flat some points a bit.

The reason why I want to do with a copy/paste is to keep the original files intact, if I vMotion them, I won't have the originals are I'm going?

Stand alone ESX server is a different model, etc. to the cluster, so I don't think I can add in?

Bascially, I need to be 100% sure that I can get these servers if something happens on copy - and I have thin, that my method is what?

Yes, when you svMotion them, you can move them.

You can add any model of a server to a cluster. What might not work is vMotion one guest from one host to another if the CPU do not match.

If you want to keep the original files, copy them.

  • MIX the ESX 3.5 and new Vsphere ESX

    Hello

Please be patient with my questions.

I have an existing TWO older ESX 3.5 server in a Cluster connected to a SAN switch with dual path.  These two servers are managed by a virtual Center 2.5. These two ESX are connected to a SAN tell LUN1 LUNS in a cluster named Cluster_A

I will install TWO NEW Vsphere 4.0

Question 1) when SAN zoning is configured, the current LUN1 can be presented now two new ESX Server because they are of different version?

Question 2) since the ESX 3.5 required a license server of virtual center still in place, how I installed the license in this virtual Center assuming that I upgrade to vcenter 4 in an environment where I have two esx 3.5 in a clusterA and two esx 4.0 to focus and manage a single VC?

Question 3) given that I have two ESX 3.5 in ClusterA, let say, I installed two new ESX 4.0 in the same ClusterA, what will be the impact on this type of configuration?

(> Question 1) when SAN zoning is configured, the current LUN1 can be presented now two new ESX Server because they are a different version?

    Yes.

(> Question 2) since the ESX 3.5 required a license server of virtual center still in place, how I installed the license in this virtual Center assuming that I upgrade to vcenter 4 in an environment where I have two esx 3.5 in a clusterA and two esx 4.0 to focus and manage a single VC?

You must allow the license server to 3.5 running even after upgrading vCenter.

(> Question 3) because I have two ESX 3.5 in ClusterA, let say, I installed two new ESX 4.0 in the same ClusterA, what will be the impact on this type of configuration?

No, they can operate in the same cluster. But if you want to be able to migrate virtual machines between 4.0 and 3.5 to NOT upgrade from VM hardware version, leaving all virtual machines with hardware VM 4.

You mean, VM swap file? If you have enough shared storage space, now Exchange files within shared storage can reduce the latency and combined the need to move the files to Exchange during the vMotion & DRS.

    Hello

Looks like you have an ESX host running "SAN boot". This occurs if you install ESX while the SAN LUN is presented to the ESX host or the FC cables are connected (depends on who you want to do).

You must determine which host a/dev/sda his boot partition and then reinstall without SAN connectivity.

  • Solid State Drives (SSDs) on the ESX host

We lack the HP Proliant DL380 G5 servers, and I wonder if anyone has any experience with the help of SSD on their ESX hosts.  In particular, we are looking for disks SAS 2.5 ".

The SSD would contain the ESX installation only... all the virtual machines and related storage resides on a San.

Since most of the e/s on an ESX host is (based on my somewhat limited experience) for most of the readings, with strange writing (for newspapers and others), an SSD would make sense for me as something that not fail anytime soon due to too many Scriptures in a sector.

And as they get bigger, I'm starting to wonder if they have an option of reliable hardware / bearable.

We have them in our IBM blades and I believe they are Intel SLC. Works well.

  • ESX 3.5 SAN connectivity

    Hello

Have 2 new servers with u2 esx 3.5 installed. Connected to a San but I can't not to see the LUNS in VC. Is there anything you want to activate on the servers to see SAN LUNS?

Have you checked the zoning, and it seems to be OK.

    Am I missing something here?

What King of environment SAN yo have?

for example, with EMC clariion you would do the following.

Install HBA in host, connect the cables between the host and the switch zone each HBA to each SP port, go to Navisphere and verify the status of the connection to verify that zoning works, either perform a manual HBA registration or install the NaviAgent EMC on the host, create LUNS, create a storage group, add LUNS and host to the storage group perform a rescan of the ESX host or other adapters of VI Client-configuration-storage, or, from the service console # esxcfg - rescan vmhba? (? = each HBA on the esx host), then add storage via "add storage - storage.

covering clariion, but most of the paintings are basically the same.

  • Rebuild the ESX - Dell 2950 Server

    Hey,.

We have three servers (Dell 2950) running ESX 3.5. One of them seems to act weird and must want needs to be rebuilt. All our servers are connected to a San and we VC installed on another server.

I was wondering what is the best way to rebuild this server? Never done this before and I don't want to lose any VM etc. Also is there anything I can follow recommended doco?

    See you soon,.

    Mark Bayliss

DRS is enabled on your cluster? If this is the case, then place the host you want to regenerate in maintenance mode. Computer virtual running on it will be vmotioned off to another ESX host in the cluster. Once the host is in maintenance mode you can turn it off. Remove the host to virtualcenter

Disconnect the cable to the SAN from the back of the server, or make sure SAN LUNS are not presented to the host through the SAN switch (assuming that the fibers). Disconnecting cables is the safest option

Rebuild your media host directly or through DRAC virtual media.

Once rebuilt, return to Virtual Center and add the host; I tend to add again but not in the cluster. Reconnect the cables of your SAN and re-run the analysis for your SAN storage space.

Once you have the SAN re-presented to the host, then move back to the cluster.

  • Changed my subnet for ESX farm.  I also changed the esx servers 'anaconda' cfg file accordingly... keeps still old IP to the reboot?

    Hello world

I changed my subnet and everythign works fine in my esx vcserver settings until I reboot... The ESX Server restores the OLD IP address.  I run ifconfig and it changes again, but why he returns to the reboots?  I have no idea what the anaconda file does but it seems to be some startup parameters, so I thought that I took care of the question... other ideas?  Thanks again for your help!

The ifconfig command will not change permanently to the IP address associated with an interface.

To do the following in the console

Edit/etc/syscongfig/network (if necessary change Gateway value)

Edit/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-vswif0 (change IP, network and the mask)

Check/etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf (for all changes to the network settings that may be necessary)

Type "service network restart" (without the quotes)

The system maintained the new IP address? If so, reboot and ensure that it retains the new IP address.

You will need to reconnect the VC system.

Anaconda is used by the process of kickstart RHEL (used for the initial version of ESX host) I know you can monkey with the configs but I tend to do things the old-fashioned way.

  • Adding a new NETWORK adapter to the ESX Server

I have an ESX 3.5 server that has two NIC onboard.  I decided that I will join the ESX Server to the SAN, so I need these two NICS for iSCSI.  I'm going to install a NETWORK card in the PCI - X slot.  Unfortunately, without GUI, I'm confused as to how it will work.  Can someone give me some advice on how to add a new NETWORK card?  I checked esxcfg and I don't know if that's what I'm trying to use.  Any help would greatly be appreciated.

In the VI client, you should be able to go on the tab network management under configuration see the NIC it to add them to the correct vSwitch.
