ThinkCentre M92p - Linux boot problem

Hi all!

I recently bought a new Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p. unfortunately I can't seem to run with Linux. I tried the two openSUSE 12.2 x 64 and Ubuntu LTS 12.04.1 x 64 (just to make sure that it is not only a problem of the OS or the installation media).

Running the computer with Windows 7 Pro is no problem (but I don't want to use it!)

Successful installation and running systems CD/DVD is no problem. But when the disc starts hard I first a message in the v1.3.81 Intel Boot Agent GE that the press failed, then an error indicating that no operating system is found.

After a search through various forums I've tried so far the following things:

-check the hardware (just to be sure... you never know)

-made sure that the computer starts in UEFI mode and the operating system is installed in EFI mode

-change of the such as the start-up of the HD boot order is the 1st choice and boot from LAN is not the 1st choice (which seems to have helped on some computers)

-Fix the file system table and the partition

-Reinstalled GRUB2

-Manually created an EFI partition and installed GRUB2

Some additional advice would be really helpful. I'm out of ideas.

When you start the cd/usb live system, you see directory named/sys/firmware/efi/vars?

  • HP Jet 11-r010nr: Linux boot direct question (some distributions)

I know it's a Linux question, but it is related to the hardware HP Stream in particular, because I don't have this problem with other computers.

Lubuntu and Mint boot perfectly on this portable on a usb key, while Clonezilla, not even their based version of Ubuntu will start.  Other distributions non-Ubuntu does not either.   I don't know if it's a BIOS setting, core switch, etc, that I might need to define, or something else I'm missing.  I would like to the image of the player before you start to remove and change things on the laptop.

    My configuration:

    (1) Stream HP laptop (model: 11-r010nr 11.6 "). Win 10 on disc in stock.
    (2) various distributions of the load on a USB stick (Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0) using software YUMI (2.0.1.9).

    What works:
    Lubuntu 15.10
    Mint 17.3

    What does NOT work:
    Clonezilla-live - 2.4.2 - 61 - i586.iso
    Clonezilla-live - 2.4.2 - 61 - amd64.iso
    Clonezilla-live-20151012-ruse - amd64.iso (Ubuntu version)
    GParted 0.24.0 - 2
    Fedora 10-23
    Kaspersky Rescue DIsk 10
    Each version of Puppy Linux

Now, just to get the key USB is recognized on the HP stream I had to make the following changes in the BIOS:
    Legacy support = on
    Secure Boot = disabled
    First = USB boot order.

I have tried many different switches from the operating system menu before starting as graphic resolutions, etc., but they did not help.

Also, what is important, every distro on the USB works on my OTHER computer, which is desktop as well as other peoples computers, if this issue is specific to the HP flow 11.

    SOLVED.

So, it was really me worry, so I played around with it a little this morning. It was recommended by the author of Clonezilla I try Tuxboot or another brand of USB drive. So first of all, I tried Tuxboot with Clonezilla 2.4.2 - 61 Stable and initially, it did not work as all my other attempts. However, this time I have noticed a new boot option in the start menu:

Considering that the only option before start was:

Hard drive USB - Sandisk Extreme...

A new section appeared when using Tuxboot and with Clonezilla is the only ISO on the USB key:

(UEFI) - Sandisk Extreme USB hard drive

So, I gave him a trial and a slightly different menu Clonezilla popped up. It's a crude text menu of the normal selection of choices (resolution, etc) rather than the normal menu scrolling. In addition, on the top of the screen was the following text... "GNU grub version 2.02 Beta 2-28". I chose one of the entries (resolution of 1024 in my case) and Clonezilla has started successfully.  Unfortunately no option exists when YUMI running, so I have to put each individual distribution on its own USB key, which of course, I would never do.

I bought the HP 650 laptop which came with Suse Linux.

as indicated in the list of drivers for Windows 64-bit here:

    http://h20000.www2.HP.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=5225013&...

After installing the driver asked me to restart the computer and after the reboot, boot, Windows boot after displaying the Windows logo on black background the computer restarts again before you boot into Windows.

After this crash to start a startup repair is suggested and I can complete the restore of the system that allows me to connect to Windows but I have not installed display drivers and things like Aero do not work.

I tried several times and re - install drivers and had the same problem after each attempt.

    Help, please.

It's quite a few updates failed.  This can be linked to the issue, but we don't know really until the update problem is resolved.

Read this document to Microsoft as it addresses this particular error.  It also has various tools to try in case the first option does not correct the problem.

You can also try the Windows Update troubleshooting utility included in Windows 7.

    Hello!

I just tried to create a new boot EFI menu entry.
Unfortunately, the UEFI configuration has such an option.

So I used efibootmgr (14.04 Kubuntu).
After you have created such an entry, it works exactly once. While the entry is lost.

How can I create a permanent EFI boot entry to start another installation of operating system than the one supplied?

    TIA

    Hello

I found some details about efibootmgr.
    > Due to bugs in efibootmgr and/or implementations of EFI, efibootmgr does not always work.

Someone said that there is a bug in efibootmgr (bug in the 2013.04.01 Installer) and one of the possible solutions is a start using the 2013.03.01 old version

But I guess that's a bad place take on efibootmgr issues.
In my opinion you should visit some places of Linux support / forums to talk about other possible solutions.

  • Satellite A660 - boot problems USB after BIOS update

    Hello

I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and have recently updated the BIOS with the latest version (1.80). Since then, the laptop freezes on the splash screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the memory flash connected and if I connect it after I enter the starting or the BIOS Setup menu. I can even start her like that.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a serious regression. Is there a way I can downgrade to the version of the BIOS, or any other way to solve this problem? I rely heavily on external USB drives.

    Kind regards
    Claudiu.

    Claudiu salvation,

That is really interesting, I have to say so I tested on my new Satellite A660 and Transcend 4 GB USB Stick. Well, I also installed 1.80 BIOS but I can t view this problem HARD drive is set as first boot device and all the other BIOS settings are default. The Toshiba screen and Windows computer starts as usual.
    No problem at all!

Have you tested different USB devices?

In General, it is not possible to downgrade BIOS. It is possible to an authorized service because Toshiba on page you can download the latest version only but I doubt it s a bug in the new version of BIOS because it works on my A660.

  • Satellite PRO C660 - 1LR Boot problem

Had this laptop for a little less than 2 months, was in course of running really slow so I backed up my data and do a factory reset, during the reset of the machine restarts automatically several times. After about 6 reboots everything I got a black with a cursor screen (ctrl + alt + delete does not work), the cursor moves but nothing happens, I guess that something was wrong with the recovery so I id try again, only to find the menu F8 at boot is no longer list of computer repair. Ive tried to boot from a CD but when I press '0' and press F12 when prompted, nothing happens, I'll be just the screen windows mem test.

Also, trying to get into the bios, I press F2 when prompted and the message very quickly becomes "HDD Recovery" then continues towards the screen of windows mem test.
So im a bit stuck now, I tried to remove the power and battery all night, but that did not help either.

Any suggestions how to get this working again?

    Post edited by: ma_anse

    Hello

You mean that you cannot access the BIOS?
To access the BIOS, you will need to press F2, immediately after pressing the power button. You can press F2 repeatedly in the line to make sure it worked.

    > Ive tried to boot from a CD but when I press '0' and press F12 when prompted, nothing happens, I just go back to the screen of windows mem test.

In order to boot from recovery disc, just press F12 (don t press the 0 key). This should allow the start on-screen menu. Then you may choose the CD/DVD drive as the boot source

But this sounds like a hardware problem; I think memory or HARD drive problem so maybe that these two parts must be checked also.

There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test that allows to test the HARD drive for errors

  • Satellite L50D - Boot problems after replacing the hard drive

I just upgraded my hard drive of the pathetic crod 5400 they provide to a SSHD@7200rpm, but now have a major issue.

I initially image the operating system from the old hard drive to the new drive and have had chronic start-up problems (1-3-4 attempts to start to succeed if it fails at any time (often to the Toshiba start screen)).

I reinstalled from a drive under Win 8.1 plain own ENT (trying to avoid the bloatware) and it is exactly the same number and is what I used to format the laptop very well with previously and had previously worked.

I tried reformatting and reinstalling (by removing all partitions on each attempt) to the CSM, unsafe UEFI and UEFI secure. MCS is a straight line never works not proceed and both UEFI methods have the same exact result.

I tried with original restore disks and it seems to work (not had time to fully test) but I don't want the bloatware and it shouldn't be serious since, if I were a customer who forgot to make restore disks (too often) and just have to have a failed hard drive or replaced sacrificed the laptop would be now a door stop.

This seems as bad as Apple to lock people in.

So I would appreciate ideas of people to please, I don't know if there is a program that is supposed to take place on a new drive as PS3 etc (I doubt it), but that leads me into the wall, and will be the last time that I consider Toshiba as anything other than a joke, if there is no solution.

I had to replace the hard disks many times in my previous Toshiba laptops and were devoid of this crod, it has something to do with UEFI which seems more a nuisance than a help right now.

    TIA.

    Hello

In my opinion, you should first check if the startup problem is related to the new installed HARD drive or new installed system.
You said that the laptop fails to start up often to the Toshiba start screen.

The splash screen appears during the POST (power on self-test) procedure. During this test, the material will be checked.
I m wondering if the hybrid SSD/HDD isn't recognised by the BIOS during this particular step.

From my point of few, this could be the reason why the system cannot be started.

    Another important note:
The 8.1 win requires enable start secure as well as the UEFI boot mode.
Therefore, you must enable both options in the BIOS.

Last but not least check if you are using the latest BIOS version as latest firmware for the hybrid SSD/HDD

  • 10.11.4 boot problems - black and white death

Hi people, write here after a weekend of failed attempts to get my iMac 27 "2009 to recover.  I see there are many good suggestions out there on this general problem and I am hoping someone can give some specific advice, as I am now out of options.

The problem started when I first noticed the screen was all black, but the cursor to move.  I think the problem started 20 or March 21 since the last backup Time Machine was to the 20th.  I had seen this occasionally over the years and so just turned off and restarted.  This time it got stuck on the white screen with the Apple logo and progress bar at halfway.  Finally reading the forum that I realized that I could actually blind the connection by pressing the right keys and hard drive noises I could say it was starting up my apps.  But the screen remains blank, just the cursor moved.  I even tried to remote into my Macbook but that just brought to the top of the black screen too!

That's so the State of the rest across machine try the following:

    1. Tried to reinstall the OS 10.11.4, it installed OK, but on reboot I have come back to the white screen of death.
    2. Tried Time Machine backup recovery, twice, first go to the last point of restoration, then among a few days earlier which was 10.11.3
    3. Wiped my Bootcamp partition and installed 10.11.4, showed the first home screen, and then it would freeze.  I could access it from secure boot, but could never get the boot on a regular basis at work, the screen remains white death.
    4. Secure boot works on both partitions, but which is as far as I can get it.  Start, I tried the suggestion of delete some items in the Library/Extensions folder, but that did not help.
    5. I also tried to remove the power cable for a minute and restart.  And the thing with now the key Alt Cmd (?) and P and W to erase the memory.  But no help.
    6. I tried to run the diagnostics of material that came on the boot floppies, CD Rom drive would turn a few times, but would not read the disc for some reason any.

I think that's it, maybe I tried a few other permutations, but it has been a long weekend, and it's all beginning to fade now.

Since all the restorations did not work it feels like it may be a hardware problem, but it's so consistent in where it fails / stalls on startup and safe mode works OK, it always makes me think that it may be a software.  There is a flash on the right screen to where it crashes on the bar, progress which makes me wonder if this might be the card or display driver problem, but really guess right now.  One last thing that I might have to try is a full erase of all partitions and create a USB stick to boot from.  But I am quite doubtful that it works in light of all other alternatives, I tried.

Additional ideas would be very appreciated, I know that I had the machine for a long time and many would say it is time to upgrade, but I'm not quire ready for this yet, it really worked great, just a little slow on the restart of the (who fortunately have been rare so far!)

So I tried to install standard windows top. Unfortunately as I soon discovered that didn't work and lead to BSOD. I looked online and remembered that I had in fact to use the recovery of three discs. Fortunately for me I still had the freshly sealed and I've also owned a combined remarkable Targus CD drive supported. If in the three discs are gone. All seemed well and after that the last drive ended, I was asked to remove the disc. The laptop has rebooted and then gave me the

I thought while another component of my laptop may be broken. So I put my old hard drive in. It started fine.
The next thought that the new hard drive was defective.

Fortunately, this is not the case. Because when I used the recovery disks not only heard disk hard turns to the top, but the hard drives were detected and recovery installation displays the correct memory size.

I'm completely stumped on hat w what is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

It is not easy to say what the problem is but you said the Portege started fine with the old HDD. So I think that there is something wrong with the new.

In your case I test the HARD drive with a special tool like Drive Fitness Test. Download the CD image, burn it to a CD and boot from it. Then you can test the HARD drive.

Check the BIOS, could be formulated with pushing the ESC key when the Red TOSHIBA logo appears, enter on boot order (First Boot Device).
