  I recently bought a new HD to replace the original that my laptop takes an hour to load.

  I put the new drive hard at in the BIOS setting, I chose to boot from USB... USB is recognized as it appears on the screen of the BIOS. I disabled the LAN option as it gives me PXE error... I think that the USB files are not read. as I handed the old HD and attached to boot from USB but it just goes to the start screen.

  I thought that perhaps I bought the wrong HD, but a new appeared on the BIOS setting... I'm a bit confused and would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction...

  New HARD drive has nothing to do with it. Problem must be your USB key.
  In your ad you didn t wrote what is on it, and we don t know if USB can operate as boot device or not.

  I put t know what OS you want to install right now but original recovery DVDs or use Microsoft installation disc and install Win7 32 bit. I ve installed on friends L300 and it works perfectly.

  Nothing I've tried has worked. However, I have finally managed to make it work has that.  I disconnected the battery for the bios for a bit. After that, I could get in the bios setup. Still would not start from a good bootable USB then I activated the Legacy and set the boot order to boot from an external USB Cdrom. Reinstalled windows 8 and all is good now thanks for all the comments!

  My X 60 a double boot Windows XP and Linux Mint 15. I need high grade at 17 Linux Mint. (and debris at the time wanted the Win XP partition as I no longer user there)

  But when I try to boot from a CD or a USB drive the .iso image file does not launch and I get possible error 'no valid operating system found'.

  It's not just like the same dvd image .iso file contianing has been successfully updated my desktop computer. The system reads the correct USB so I see the present .iso on the USB stick. LY

  Ive checked on forums and someone suggested making sure that SATA has been defined compatibility instead of DCIS, but that makes no difference.

  Someone at - it any other ideas?

  It turns out that I had two different problems.

  (1) the external CD burner is not working. (I'm sure that it handles DVD properly because I can see the iso under windoze partition)

  (2) the USB key option had been formatted seems wrong - the default value is of this format read-only, which means that I couldn't burn properly .iso image file. I corrected withis with the command chmod 777, burned again and then the X 60 picked up correctly.

  Pelased so it wasn't a problem with my beloved maptop... Thanks again!

I then downloaded a file ISO of Windows 7 from Digital River and made a bootable USB key with it using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. Then I put the USB in my old pc to boot from it. In this game with the boot from USB, I have the problem that I think is related with my version of the BIOS. Is AMI BIOS v2.53. If I go to Boot Device Priority it shows boot devices only 3 [link1] - my c: / drive, CD-DVD-ROM and floppy. When I go to the menu hard drives [Link2], it shows all my HARD drive and the 3rd disc is my USB bootable [link3]. And to expand my USB in the Boot Device Priority menu, I put it as the 1st player [link4]. Instead, I can't put my C: / drive as the Boot Device [link5] 2nd. And after I exit and save the changes, it will not boot from usb. It appears the error "a disk read error has occurred. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart» If I try to boot from another boot menu F8 [link6] button, it will also give me the same error. This problem could be linked with my BIOS version?  I don't know how to solve the problem.

  Also test the USB to different USB ports. A port may be defective for the computer to start t with him.

  The key in the power up takes you to the BIOS settings.

  Installing the drivers could be difficult. I have a 7010CT and there is no option to boot from USB (only floppy - HDD - CD - lan). I don't think that Windows 98 supports USB sticks without additional drivers. I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 by using a PCMCIA cdrom external and from the installer of Windows 98. Maybe you could try to use a network card PCMCIA to try to find a disk for the Portege.

  As far as I know it of not possible to disable certain devices to boot.

  You can change the boot order in the BIOS. For example, you can set the HARD drive as first boot device. That means that the computer will always start HARD drive even a bootable USB device is connected.

  Check this box!

  I put t know if this is possible, but if you can visit Toshiba service in your city, ask them for help. They have all the external devices and also external optical drive.
  Buy a coffee and ask if they can install just image recovery using your recovery DVDs. I m that they will help you with this.

  By the way: you can not install OS using the recovery saved on the HARD disk image. Laptop can't see it.
  What you need is the optical disk drive.
  Also, try to borrow a somewhere.
