Time Machine dead drive?

I have an external drive 2 TB G Drive that I use for backups of TM of some macs and other storage containers.  It is divided into 5 volumes for each task.  It's worked perfectly until recent days.  Now when I try to mount the drive only 3 storage volumes show in Finder, with fsck_hfs trying to repair the two volumes of TM with success.  Disk utility doesn't load any discs in any mode (normal, safe or recovery) just an empty window grey with wheel of progress that is going nowhere.  All 5 volumes do not appear in the profile system, but TM volumes are not shown as writable.

Looking back through the logs of fsck_hfs it is a long chain of these messages from the first attempt from wrong installation.

Formatting: GUID Partition Table, OS X Extended (journaled).    (it is HFS +)

I would like to do something similar, since 1) it is cost-effective and 2) of my experience works.

  • Go new Time Machine backup drive

I have searched the forums and have not been able to find the answer to this yet.

It is my Time Machine backup on an external hard drive. I want to move it to a new drive and get rid of the old drive. But I can't find any information that explains how to migrate from one disk to another. Can I just copy the folder Backups.backupdb on the new drive? I'm guessing that's not as simple as that.

In addition, on the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkbox. I'm confused by what I read in the forums because it's kind of like a double negation. Once & for all, for this new album I want it checked or unchecked? And why?

    Thanks for your help.

You can make a copy of the Finder to the new drive, but sometimes it hangs and does not work

Try using disk/restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition.

Checking ignore permissions usually eliminates any permissions problem which may occur.

  • Time Machine replacement drive but can not see the old backups

    Race X Server on 10.11.2 with 5.0.15

My Time Machine hard disk became full and I replaced it with a new, larger, in the car. I copied everything (using the Finder) from the old to the new drive and set it as the destination of Time Machine for a couple of Mac network.

I now have a 'new' backup, I don't see one of my old files when entering TM. I can't see my old backups that I copied the disk of TM "Daves Mac.sparsebundle" and alongside a new "Daves Mac 1.sparsebundle.

How can I continue to use the old backup data?

    Thank you

    "Dave."

On your Mac TimeMachine backup was severed with the sparsebundle backup on the server - which obviously you saw. If you run this command on one of your Mac you will see something like this (it's just for example).

    $ tmutil destinationinfo

    ====================================================

    Name: TimeMachine

    Type: network

    URL: afp://user@host._afpovertcp._tcp.local./TimeMachine

    Mount point: / Volumes/TimeMachine

    ID: 3167D1F3-9FE8-4369-B8CC-463B92F35438

The key is that there is an ID associated to backup to the Time Machine backup of service on your OS X Server. This ID is what Time Machine use when working with backups.

  • Time Machine backup drives to 2 Separate hard

I want to have two full backups separately on two different hard drives, and I want to Time Machine for updating each drive separately so I always complete backup two drives.  How is that possible?

Simply select one of the readers in Time Machine preferences as a backup drive. Then repeat the process, but select the drive 2nd in Time Machine preferences. You'll get a prompt asking if you want to replace the first hard drive or use both. Click the button for both.

  • Could not find the Time Capsule for Time Machine backup drive

My iMac is running El Capitan and Time Machine is unable to find the Time Capsule backup drive.  I blew the backup several times in hopes that it will fix the problem.   The only thing I found which will allow a return to the top is to unplug the Time Capsule and plug it in again.  The work around works only once, then it's back to "can't find the backup disk.

For anyone a cela or similar questions are you go in your Utilities folder (in your applications folder) and run the utility airport to see what he says about the disks attached. This cannot work for the readers of time capsule Apple rather than third party readers who have been designated as the backup time drives machine.

  • What is the best solution when my external drive for Time Machine is full?

    Hello

I use the latest version of Mac OS X on my iMac 27 ". I use a drive outside of 3 TB G-Tech for Time Machine backup. Due to my recently many RAW photo images, I have less 8% left storage on my external hard drive, so I'm trying to figure out next steps in what concerns the strategy of external storage and have the following questions:

    • When my external drive for Time Machine is full, it is my understanding that older backups on external hard drive will be deleted to make room for newer backups. If the oldest backups contained pictures (whose records have not changed since the time they are initially stored), then I guess that these photos will be removed from the external drive - correct?
    • If I had to replace my external drive for Time Machine with a new external drive which is as big or bigger than the one it replaces, what should I expect on the size of the initial backup on the new drive? I guess the size of the backup would be exactly equal to the current amount of storage used on my drive hard iMac - correct?
    • Would it not be possible to connect the external drive for Time Machine existing at a new Time Machine external drive so that when the original disk is full, the overflow will be automatically stored on the new external hard drive for Time Machine? (If feasible, it seems that this strategy would maximize my external storage capacity vs just replace external drives.)

I realize that my first two questions are rather basic, but I don't want to make any false assumptions. The third idea is intriguing and I would like to know if this is a viable option.

    Thank you

    Brian

older files are starting to get deleted because the disk fills up then Yes, they went

the backup drive should ideally be 4 times the capacity of your current drive, twice is good but has its limits. Also factor in what you store: a jpeg from the web and a raw photo file are the two images, the size of a is very different. If you work in high-resolution or large native files, or audio files (record pro, no music files) or video production twice the disk fills up very quickly. If you collect photos and JPEG and mp3 files or a handful of videos not so much is necessary.

I would keep the old drive intact if you want to replace and start over with a new drive, if that's the plan. You have the old data, you can keep it somewhere safe and have a redundant backup which you can reconnect at any time to restore from. Let the new index drive itself with new data and take if from there, in the case otherwise you can copy the backup to the new drive and set the drive as the new source of backup but personally I wouldn't copy of the data, that's my preference, it may not be yours and that's fine.

  • Time Machine backup to external drive connected to the TimeCapsule

I have a 3 TB TimeCapsule, that contains the my iMac TimeMachine backup. So far so good.

Now, I would like to connect an external drive to the TimeCapsule via the USB port to allow access to this drive of my iMac as well as other computers on my network. I would like to than the external to include in my Time Machine backup drive. Is it possible - by accepting that the backup of obviously only runs when the Mac is on? If this isn't the case, other methods of backup to an external drive, connected to the TimeCapsule, may be recommended?

You can do it. Time Machine it will support up to a separate folder on your backup disk. Don't forget to remove it from the exclusions list in Time Machine preferences. I don't know if others cannot see the drive connected to your computer is turned off. They may be able to mount the drive on their computer as you do on yours. Try it because I could be wrong on this matter.

  • Time Machine backup migration wizard

    Hello

I have a MBP (2012 model) running OSX 10.11.6. The hard drive has encountered an error that I couldn't get (invalid node structure). After spending the better part of a day of troubleshooting, I finally erased the drive and reinstall the OS from the OSX Internet Recovery Mode option. After that I reinstalled OSX version accompanying (Mavericks), I was going to transfer all my files from my USB external time Machine drive. I checked using the Migration Wizard, and I had the opportunity to transfer any of the player. Instead, I thought I'd be better to first upgrade to el capitan (it was on 10.11.6 when it stopped working) and install the programs I use (MS Office) before the transfer, so I went through this process. Now when I try to restore the files using Migration Assistant in el Capitan, he can't seem to find the USB Time Machine backup drive - it retains just turn on "the search for Source...". "on the transfer to this Mac screen information. If I leave the Migration Wizard, the USB key is accessible in the Finder. Don't know what to do at this point, but I really need these files (years of family photos are my biggest concern about losing).

    Thank you

    Mike Camden

OK - I've solved it. For some reason, it wouldn't find the backup disk, Time Machine in the Migration Wizard, when I plugged directly on the port of USB of MBP (although he appeared and is accessible from the Finder); However, on a whim, I plugged into the USB port on my Airport Extreme, connected my MBP to it as a shared resource on the network and is running Migration Wizard again. Migration assistant immediately found and was able to make the Time Machine restore - it took much longer overall than network he would like a USB drive, but I let it run all night, and everything was finished this morning.

  • Time Machine crashes

Looking in my journal I find this:
com Apple.backupd: waiting for index or loan (100)

After consultation with google I find that the problem is probably related to a disconnection from the backup disk that happened earlier today, when I accidentally stumbled upon the USB when fixing my iPhone.

I barely touched, but it was enough to cause a disconnect.

I ' t may be something else though because it seems a little far fetched that a simple disconnect/connect must

cause such a catastrophic failure like that.

This post describes how Time Machine can lead to corrupted data when they are exposed to accidents:

Re: Time Machine 'Waiting for the index to be ready': what it really means?

If this is the case, then it tells me that Time Machine is not capable of handling disconnects and auto resume.

I'm guessing that disconnects happen every day to thousands of users of the time Machine.

So I'm expecting Time Machine to use a fault-tolerant Protocol.

    Maybe it's not.

Now, I get multiple instances of "com.apple.backupd: waiting for index be ready (100)" in my log file.

Even if the projector is not indexing.

It took about an hour to save 3 KB of data.

    Wow
    I'm NOT surprised!

I should also mention that I added all external drives including the backup drive to the exclusion of Spotlight list.
So they must not interfere with the backup.
However, when you add the backup drive, I received the message:

"My Passport for Mac ' is a Time Machine backup drive.

Spotlight will continue to search for Time Machine backups but seek no other items on the disk.

But why must it seek the backups at all.
Why would I want an index of my backup files?

    Tip: I don't want

  • Failure of Time Machine

I have a time machine backup to an external drive which was destroyed.

When I get time machine, this drive is not displayed even if the backup is there, as well as the backup of my other readers...

While it makes absolutely no sense for Apple to hide this backup from the view, especially when time machine is designed to recover data in case of emergency such as this, it is nevertheless the case.

  • Time Machine - multiple disks?

    Hello

I just lost my cloud storage because prices went through the roof looking for alternatives.

I am currently using Time Machine to do a general backup to my Macbook and the connected player, but I want to be able to do the following:

Continue to make my Time Machine backup as usual

Once every week/month attach a new/other drive and make a backup with Time Machine, this drive will be then stored in my work

In this way, I have all my data on 3 discs in different places

Is it possible to do this easily and simply?

    Hope that makes sense

Is it possible to do this easily and simply?

Yes. Just add more backup destinations. They will be rotated automatically, or sauteed if not available.

I can see them in every window of servers as being selectable but I get an error of error OSSTATUS 2

It was suggested to connect all readers behind the time machine backup, but it has not been that reliable.

Do you have a suggestion of how to back up each server Pegasus 12 TB and 4 TB two external disks?

I can't wait to hear your thoughts

    Joe

From a given computer, you can back up all drives connected locally to this Time Machine backup drive.

The backup drive Time Machine for a particular computer can be a locally attached disk, a drive attached to a "Tall" Time Capsule or a network drive 'shared' by another Mac on your network. The Time Machine backup disk cannot be a NAS drive, because the restoration of these discs is not completely reliable.

The space required for the proper functioning of Time Machine is at least two times greater than the amount to save, and 2.5 to 3 times more is recommended.
