To vCSA new host?

Hello

I have a cluster three host being managed by vCSA device that runs on one of the hosts.  What is the best method to move the vCSA to a new host?  Pouvez vmotion vCSA itself?  Or should I remove the inventory and then add to the new host?

Please inform, I'm at a stop in production until I got this figuratively.

Thank you!

VMotion just to the new host - new host must be in the cluster with the same CPU family as other great hosts

  • No network connection to the virtual computer after migration manually to the new host

We have added six new hosts to our environment, and I was tasked to test connections of VIRTUAL LAN on each of them before we move VM production of their.  This is probably a simple problem, but I am new to VMWare and need help.  I already talked to our network guys, and he assures me that the physical switches are setup and working properly.  We work a vDS.

I'm testing 14 VLANs on six new hosts.  All but one are constantly working.  (They all work on the hosts of origin which were in force before.)  I have a static IP configuration on my test VM and MAC is set to automatic.  I checked the MAC does not change when you migrate to other hosts and the VLAN correct is listed in the settings the VM network (it is not empty).  Him VLAN will work on three of the six hosts, but not all at the same time.  The strange thing is that guests at work are constantly changing.  For example, this morning hosts11, 12 and 14 may work, but this afternoon, that could change at hosts12, 14 and 16.  I don't understand why they would change on their own.

My test consists of VM testing, migration manually, powering back, then he ping from my computer off.  Of course everything works when I get ping responses.  When I get no answers, the test of the virtual machine has a yellow exclamation mark on the network icon in the system tray.

What should I do to fix this?

How is the network configured?  You have a different NIC port/cable for each VLAN or Trunking used on the side of the switch?

If you use circuits on the side of the switch, then your GRPE ports virtual switch a VLAN ID needs to match the vlan is underway to shared resources.  No matter if it's a standard switch or switch distributed... you still need this ID of vlan.

I've seen the random question that you encounter if missing one or more of of the uplinks on the side of the switch the VLAN.

    * SSE4.1

    * SSE4.2

We see this processor belongs to the Tigerton generation. However, VCA has not listed under generations Tigerton.

    My questions are the following:

    1. can you a generation on VCA mess with our current infrastructure and affect our VM?

    2. which generation will work to Tigerton? And if it does not, what are the risks to my other virtual machines?

    Hello

    According to this blog post

You will need to use the Merom for Intel CPU base line, because the CPU is a very old architecture.

    (1) I guess that you are currently running at a higher level of CPU architecture than that. As the error that you are experiencing is that the virtual machine is using a new CPU instruction set (SEE4) available on the host CPU but is not available on the processor Tigerton. To set the initial planning, you will need to actually turning off all the VM and the base line the lowest value (Merom). As they would receive a "downgrade" in all areas based on the features of the CPU. Some applications are particularly sensitive to what is exposed to them, so you can do some research on that. In general, I would use CVS if I had bought new hosts with recent material and wanted to limit to comply with the older existing architecture that one just how they are exposed to the guest and don't ever use new features. You go down a step, that is much more intrusive and could have an impact on your VM.

    (2) you need the reference level of Merom, please think hard about it for your environment before that!

    Happy to help you more

  • Is there a CPU compatible issue for an addition of a new host?

We are running a cluster of 3 servers ESXi 5.1 - 2 of them are Xeon E7440 2.4 GHz (64 GB of RAM) and 1 of them is Xeon X 5460 3.16 GHz (32 GB of RAM).

We would like to add a new server with SSD to this cluster (instead of replacing the old server)

Wonder if there is a potential problem? Needless to say, the CPU will have a span of quite different range.

Assuming that the new host is supported for ESXi 5.1, and all guests share a common mode of EVC, you shoudn't have problems add to the cluster.

  • VM shows physical mode as unreadable RDMs after DRS put VM on new host

    Need help with a problem:

a virtual machine with pRDMs which is part of a VCS configuration has been closed, host migrated manually again, then power on, DRS he moved to yet another host.   and for some reason, the RDM are now unreadable

Does anyone have an idea why this happened and how to fix this?

Notes - for this virtual machine DRS has been on 'manual', while the clusters more DRS setting is fully automatic.     Because it is set to manual, I wasn't the one that vaulted to the top of the virtual machine, but I guess the user who did it was invited to place the virtual computer somewhere and he chose to place it on a new host then that it had migrated to.

Made this recommendation of the DRS and move them to the new host clustered VM ability to see the pRDMs?

In the guest OS I run diskpart and the disks are online, but appear as unreadable.

Thanks for advice on this one to help us understand the behaviour here, and what could have caused this.

I am perfectly aware that the VNMware cannot vmotion VMs with shared during an attempt of vmotion SCSI controllers.  But it's not clear to me that the process is under the covers when DRS wants to move a virtual machine somewhere in the power.

DRS uses vmotion to move VMS between hosts and it should has failed, if they are configured for shared scsi - I do the bet when the virtual machine has been powered and he was placed on the host wroong who has no access to the RDM - powering the virtual computer if you start on the correct host do you have access ot the RDM?

  • New host ESXi licensing

    Hi guys,.

I am currently working on a workflow for the provision of new hosts ESXi from scratch. Unfortunately, I glued on the new VMWare licensing to a host. I wanted to do this with a script element:

    Entry:

    Host (VC: HostSystem)

    License (String)

    Code:

    Host.configManager. licenseManager. licenseAssignmentManager.updateAssignedLicense (Host.id, license, null);

Unfortunately, this returns an error indicating licenseManager is null.

Anyone know how to set the new licenseManager on the host or license in another way?

    Thank you

    Kamil

OK, I got it myself. Instead of approaching licenseManager thanks Host.configManager I used instead of the VC:SdkConnection variable.

    Entry:

    Host (VC:HostSystem)

    SDK (VC:SdkConnection)

    LicenseKey (String)

    Code:

    SDK.licenseManager.licenseAssignmentManager.updateAssignedLicense (Host.id, LicenseKey, null);

    This works perfectly!

  • VCenter moved to a new host, now it shows as orphans

Hi, I moved vCenter to a new host.  Now when I open vCenter, it shows the server under the old host as (orphans).  The new host is showing that (not answer).

  • Migration of servers to new host and SAN

    Hello

    Current configuration:

2 x ESXi servers, local storage, share nothing.  License of VMWare Essentials

    New configuration:

3 x SAN Eqllogic, ESXi servers. Essential Plus VMWare license

I would like to make the transition to the new configuration with minimal downtime, we have invited a few large (> 1 TB) on one of the servers and I don't want them to be disconnected for more than a few minutes, then a migration cold is out of the question.

I had a thought that I could put the license key more on the old servers and 1 new servers, set the new SAN on the old servers, use VMWare replication to replicate virtual machines among the old servers to the new server/storage, and then perform a recovery.

I would then remove this old Vsphere server, add a new server and transfer the license, then perform the same task on the old server to 2nd.

Once it is finished I remove the old server 2, add the new 3rd server, and move the license.

Can someone tell me if this is possible, or suggest alternatives?

    Thank you

    Dean.

    Hi Dean,

Replication (replication vSphere) VMware will be requires downtime when you are recovering from the old host to new host.

How much time can you afford for downtime?

The recovery process will turn off the source/protected VM on the current host (VM function how long it would normally take to perform a shutdown comments) and destination/recovery VM will be powered on to a new host (again, depends on VM normally, how long it would take for the operating system and services until then a normal diet on the process).

vSphere replication requires vSphere Web Client and other requirements, as described here: 5.5 - replication requirements vSphere vSphere Documentation Centre

    You have a vCenter Server?
What version of ESXi (and vCenter) do you use?

If you don't have a vCenter Server yet, I suggest you install a vCenter server and add all the current 2 ESXi hosts + 1 new ESXi host.

From there, you'll have an ESXi 3 host, then you can migrate current ESXi host for new.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 + you can vMotion, even if the host do not have access to the same storage see this: library of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion in environments without storage shared

Its quite simple, if you are using vSphere 5.1 +.

-Make sure you have vcenter Server 5.1 + with vSphere Web Client

-Add current hosts + 1 new hosts

-Make sure the vMotion without requirement for shared storage are filled with VSphere 5.5 Documentation Center - requirements and restrictions for vMotion without Shared Storage

-Perform vMotion without process Shared Storage of current host to the new host + local storage to SAN EqualLogic - you can start with small VM and VM less critical first if you are not sure.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated to the new host + EqualLogic SAN, you can do a maintenance on the current host mode, and then delete the vCenter Server (vSphere licenses will be retrieved)

-Add the 2 remaining new hosts.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 prior, you must present the SAN EqualLogic again 1 new host and current 2 hosts.

Once current hosts can see the EqualLogic SAN, make a Storage vMotion (live migration records) local storage to the EqualLogic.

For first migration vSphere 5.1, there are 2 ways that I can think of:

    1. with vMotion - without interruption

There are certain requirements of configuration for vMotion work: Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion

Make sure your classes and new hosts are run in the same processor / EVC mode or matrix, you can check it out here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=cpu

If they are on different EVC Mode, you can turn on the CEV on new hosts.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Perform a vMotion from the current host to new host.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

    2. without vMotion - requires the interruptions of service commissioning

It's cold migration but without migration of storage, must be less compared to downtime directly cold immigration to localdisk of shared storage.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Turn off the virtual machines in the current hosts and migrate (cold) of the host-to-host former New (you can also drag the virtual computer and drop it to the new host).

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

  • Add new host esxi 5.1 for the existing cluster of vcenter

    Hello

I would like to add a new host Virgin esxi 5.1 to an existing cluster from the vcenter. What are the things that I have to preconfigure on the host before add you it? I configured the network already, storage will be implemented when I add it to the cluster, right?

So, what I ended up doing was just set up time, networking and dns. I then added the host while he was in maintenance mode. I have a Compellent SAN storage and im using a folder in compellent to map all my Lun, then I can just add a new host in this folder, and it will automatically map all volumes to the newly added host once I go into vmware and make a new analysis on the FC HBA host (do FC fabric SW zoning first of course). I then added a file .locker on one of my SAN LUNS scrach location/newspapers. She's.

  • NFS share for one (1) added when adding to a new host in the existing data center

I'm sure it's a simple answer, but I've been beating my head on the wall, trying to find a solution. The scenario is as follows:

1 Vcenter has several hosts in different groups. All built at the same time with a NFS share that is shared among all.

    2. I add a new host to the data center (I tried independently and also added to a cluster as well).

    3. the new host sees its local disk as a data store, as expected, but I have to add the shared NFS datastore.

    4. at the level of the host, I go to configuration-storage-add storage and the NFS share.

It shows and normal with NFS (1) as the name. I can't rename it as it says THAT NFS already exist. I understand that there are in the vcenter DB, but how to add this new host or host an existing environment and maintain the name of the NFS share? vCenter 5.5, 5.5 esxi

    Thanks for your help

We have a simple DMZ where I set up a host running ESXi 5.1. I have another windows server in the DMZ subnet and I can load the new ESXi her host's web site. From my PC in our LAN I can not pull the top web interface 5.1 ESXi or connect via vSphere Client. If I enable SSH on the new host, can I use Putty to connect to the new host ESXi from my PC in LAN. I watched the event logs in our firewall and nothing seems to be blocked. I guess that the problem is related to a value or a firewall setting in ESXi 5.1 but I don't know. Just a thought. Why don't run you the ESXi host in your internal network management and only virtual machines in the DMZ? Would make the ESXi host management even more secure, and you wouldn't have to open Firewall ports.
