try to install the new 18.5 "HP monitor

I needed a new monitor, I bought a monitor 18.5 "HP S1931a, it works but it doesn't look good, not too strong. I noticed that it says he should have a resolution of 1366 x 768, but I'm running on Windows XP and it seems that I can't beyond 1024 x 768. Is that making the quality of the screen and is there a way I can fix it?
