When I try to play a DVD in the DVD player, I get a loud clicking with no sound from the DVD.   This only happens to the DVD.  CDs play sounds without problem.  If I copy the same files to DVD on the hard drive, I can play from the hard drive and the sound works.  If I connect speakers to the audio output and disable the HDMI output, I can play the DVD in the DVD player and games sound through the speakers without noise.  I ran his tool from Microsoft without success.  Updated all the audio drivers.  I reloaded Vista, which corrected the problem.  But as time passed the problem comes back.  I suspect that the problem was caused by a Microsoft Update.   a DVD decoder is not included.

  The DVD is encoded for a different region. Most DVD readers only works with DVDs that are coded for the computer was purchased in the same region. So if you buy a DVD in one country and then try to play on one computer from another country this DVD could not play.

  Make sure that the DVD region is set to the appropriate region:

  a. Click Start.

  (b) in the search box, type Device Manager.

  c. right-click on the DVD drive.

  d. right-click on it and select Properties.

  e. make sure that the region will be resolved.
