UCS and storage network

I am using iSCSI with the software iSCSI adapter in ESXi as well as of the UCS and use binding to ports to bind each vmkernel iSCSI port to a specific vmnic and I use 2 vmnic.  Must I also within the UCS links each vmnic so that vmnic1 traffic to cross a 1 interconnection fabric and the movement of vmnic2 fabric crossbar Interconnect 2?

Must I also within the UCS links each vmnic so that vmnic1 traffic to cross a 1 interconnection fabric and the movement of vmnic2 fabric crossbar Interconnect 2?

A vEth can only come out in a unique fabric of interconnection - it's decided when you take the fabric (A or B) for the vNIC. There is no additional connection to perform.

  • Nexus 1000v, UCS, and Microsoft NETWORK load balancing

    Hi all

I have a client that implements a new Exchange 2010 environment. They have an obligation to configure load balancing for Client Access servers. The environment consists of VMware vShpere running on top of Cisco UCS blades with the Nexus 1000v dvSwitch.

Everything I've read so far indicates that I must do the following:

1 configure MS in Multicast mode load balancing (by selecting the IGMP protocol option).

    2. create a static ARP entry for the address of virtual cluster on the router for the subnet of the server.

    3. (maybe) configure a static MAC table entry on the router for the subnet of the server.

    3. (maybe) to disable the IGMP snooping on the VLAN appropriate in the Nexus 1000v.

    My questions are:

    1. any person running successfully a similar configuration?

2 are there missing steps in the list above, or I shouldn't do?

    3. If I am disabling the snooping IGMP on the Nexus 1000v should I also disable it on the fabric of UCS interconnections and router?

Thanks a lot for your time,.

    Aaron

    Aaron,

The steps above you are correct, you need steps 1-4 to operate correctly.  Normally people will create a VLAN separate to their interfaces NLB/subnet, to prevent floods mcast uncessisary frameworks within the network.

    To answer your questions

    (1) I saw multiple clients run this configuration

    (2) the steps you are correct

    (3) you can't toggle the on UCS IGMP snooping.  It is enabled by default and not a configurable option.  There is no need to change anything within the UCS regarding MS NLB with the above procedure.  FYI - the ability to disable/enable the snooping IGMP on UCS is scheduled for a next version 2.1.

This is the correct method untill the time we have the option of configuring static multicast mac entries on
the Nexus 1000v.  If this is a feature you'd like, please open a TAC case and request for bug CSCtb93725 to be linked to your SR.

This will give more "push" to our develpment team to prioritize this request.

Hopefully some other customers can share their experience.

    Regards,

    Robert

  • Should separate you network traffic and storage?

To give some background, we use FCoE, and each server has 6 adapters. The way it was intended was 2 for network, storage 2 and 2 to the DMZ. The subject was brought on the use of network and storage 4 to increase the flow.

Could someone point me to the best practices of the present or advice if they believe that it should be separate or combined?

    Thank you

I always recommend using a disparate network for IP storage (or at least one VLAN unique), unless you have some really strong QoS that will ensure you packets of storage (as with something like a blade case). The problem is that storage is much more sensitive to latency as (most) network traffic, and contension could cause significant problems.

    http://blogs.VMware.com/Networking/2011/11/VDS-best-practices-.html

IP storage traffic is via the ports of vmknic and this traffic varies with disk i/o requests. More data are transferred to configuration-to-end jumbo frame, with each Ethernet frame, reducing the number of images on the network. Plu framework reduced the load on the servers and targets and improves the performance of IP storage. Congested and low speed networks can cause latency issues that disrupt access to storage over IP. It is recommended to provide path at high speed for IP storage and avoid any congestion in the network infrastructure.

  • Random virtual machines after vMotion and Storage vMotion network loss

    Hi all -

I have a couple of tickets open with VMware and our supplier of SAN, EqualLogic, on this issue.  Since the configuration of our production and DMZ clusters we noticed that the virtual machines will sometimes drop network connectivity after a successful vMotion and Storage vMotion.  Sometimes, although much less frequently, virtual machines also spontaneously lose network overnight.  What happened only a few times.  The strange thing is that the other guests on the VM host are fine - they lose any network.  Actually, I can do no more than 3 computers virtual host to another, and 2 of 3 can switch correctly, so that we lose the network.  The work around?  Simply 'disconnect' from the virtual NETWORK card 'reconnect' and the virtual machine will start the return packets.  I can also switch the VM troubled return to the host State and it will find the network.  I can it reboot and re - win network.  I can re - install the virtual card completely, and she re - win network.

VMware has seen a lot of mistakes of SAN in our log files in order to update us our SAN firmware to the latest version.  That seems to have fixed that but we still have the issue.  Here are some of the specifications - all environments are virtually identical except for memory:

    Of PowerEdge R810

    NICs Broadcom 5709

    EqualLogic SAN running 5.0.5 F/W

We use frames.  ESXi is fully patched.  I haven't seen a boss or not, it is only some guest operating system that loses the network, but we are a Windows environment.

When a virtual machine loses the network, we can not:

    • Ping to it
    • Ping it
    • Ping him at the virtual machines on the same host or vSwitch
    • Ping outside our network
    • resolve DNS, etc..

I followed some KBs VMware without success, including:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003839
http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & externalId = 1002811 (port security is not enabled)

-All the VMware tools have been updated to the latest version correct and corresponds to the ESXi host
-Connected to the service ESXi console, I cannot ping the VM problem by name of host or IP address, but I can ping do not affected by the issue of the OTHER virtual machines.  I can also pings the service console.
-Connected to the troubled virtual machine itself, I cannot ping other virtual machines, I can't resolve host names, I cannot ping by IP.  The machine virtual CAN ping itself by IP, but not hostname.  I cannot ping other virtual computers on the same virtual switch or network by either IP or host name.  I can't ping the vSwitch network management.
-All vSwitches are configured in the same way and the same.
-Notify the switches is set to yes
-There are a lot of available virtual ports
-We tried the E1000 and VMXNET virtual cards with no difference.
-All cards are configured to negotiate, but we tried to force individuals speeds as well as with no difference

I appreciate your help.  I have problems getting anywhere on this issue with the sellers.

Sometimes, it might be useful to really check that all uplinks VMNIC for all VLAN does work them. Try this is to create a new portgroup on the vSwitch used by your virtual machines on the host of the first, put a test VM on the portgroup, then go into the NIC teaming policy from the new portgroup and select "Override switch command failover."

Then down vmnic all except one in unused, then only a single VMNIC is active. Then set the portgroup VLAN to a production of VLAN and try to see if we could ping some expected from the different addresses. If it works, then move VMNIC work until unused and move up to another asset. Try again, and this for all the vmnic. If it works, then you have verified that the configuration of VLANS and other settings are correct on the physical switch in the face of this host ports.

If several VLANs, repeat the process for all other productions VLAN. Then repeat on the other hosts.

While that may take some time, occurs if everything is properly configured on the physical switches. When occurs a vMotion virtual machine gets a new "Port code" and is assigned to a new outgoing VMNIC. If there is an error of configuration on one or more physical ports that might seem random, but may still happen on VLAN x on y VMNIC. Given that Port ID policy you use indeed spread randomly VMs on the vmnic these problems may be difficult to diagnose. (Make a disconnection of the VM vNIC gives the virtual machine a new port-ID, which it will move to a new outgoing VMNIC, which might seem to solve the problem.)

  • VM ESXi and Cisco's UCS and EMC without a question of a novice

I'm confused about the places where to install ESXi 5.0. This is on a windows Server or UCS blades if you have blades of the UCS and EMC San

I know that we must install vcenter, a first round upward on the Cisco UCS blades. Do I connect EMC San?

How to set these at all? I need a tutorial step by step for these 3 types of equipment to set up.

    Thank you!

You can install any OS on blades, it's simple as console for all blades connected with the network and storage, it requires knowledge networking and storage configuration Cisco blades. Each blade has a remote as ILO or DRAC console, you can mount ISO image and start to install the OS, according to the needs we can configure boot from the local disk or boot from SAN, engineer of the UCS who has enough knowledge will create profiles of service for a whole different requirement for Windows Server and Citrix Xen server or ESXi servers , each requirement will be have the profile, just add blades and card service profile to access the console Blade Server, please download UCS virtual device and confiure and start learning.

    Hello

I try to compile virtual Portchannels on 2 5548UP of Nexus and UCS 6248FI 2. Communication between ESX servers and my network is working with independent links (no mail order). When I build on the N5k the vPC VPC all portchannels (on N5K and FIs) are on the rise.

The Portchannels are pinned the vNIC and all looks fine. But there is no communication between my ESXs and my network. My setup is like this:

    Hi all

The issue go, I have a host machine with 3 nic cards - > 1 for production network, 1 for the management network and 1 for the network backup.

The guest PC VM inside will be connected to the 3 network,

But for the host himself, will be used for management and backup only.

I understand that the configuration of virtual machines and their data are assigned and stored in the data store that is made visible at the level of the host.

They must for the virtual machines access the data store, join the storage network as well? or they are access to the storage through the host

T1) is the bears from production on the need for level ESXI host having an IP address as well?

A NIC itself does not require an IP address. Which IP addresses are required for VMkernel port groups (for example, networking, vMotion, storage access,...) as well as virtual machines.

Right of Q2) now my host use internal storage. If I'm to migrate to a SAN storage...

No, a virtual machine (i.e. the guest operating system) does not require access to the system of storage, only the ESXi host.

  • Server and storage suggestion

    Hi all

Please suggest a class machine good server & a NAS (approximately 12 TB) storage for the ESXi 5.x installation.

I have a budget of 1600000 INR ($26000). Please note that we have another 4 ESXi servers in our environment with local storage. Intend to use this storage to these servers as well.

    Regrads,

    Nithin

10G compared to 1 GB and fiber network is pretty much a draw until our days and all this boils down to your infrastructure.  If you already have fiber switch up its probably cheaper just go with fiber instead of get a 10 GB iSCSI SAN and a 10 GB switch, however if you do not have fiber 10 GB switch with 10 GB iSCSI is a good solution.  The nice thing about 1 GB iSCSI is it can be attached anywhere pretty easily because it requires just a nic, NIC 10 GB start to be this much too as the price on them is going down and they become more frequent.

Another SAN manufacturing that makes just iSCSI is the Dell Equallogic series without.  These box isn't bad and REALLY simple to use with a wide range of configuration options.

nhagoort suggested VSAN that is a very interesting option which I think will be a good possible fit for a lot of people on the road, however, VSAN is a technology of generation 1 and vmware is currently working on obtaining reports more as currently VSAN statement falls a bit short.  I'll direct you to the following article: http://www.reddit.com/r/vmware/comments/2799p4/root_cause_analysis_of_my_vsan_outage/

Now this particular problem is a local table of low-grade controller in the Dell server that caused the problem, but the article goes over how VSAN works very well and also how they have solved.  I have no doubt with good material VSAN might be really good, especially with a lot of SSD, fusion IO cards ect coming out, however I have never been one to jump on the bandwagon Gen1 outside the trial / lab / dev stuff.

    Hope this has helped.

  • Isolate the vMotion and storage traffic?

We use ESXi 5.1 using two physical switches for management traffic and two physical switches for VM and storage vMotion traffic. We use a DVSwitch with VLANS separated for VMs (125), storage (126) and vMotion traffic (127). My question is really about the physical switch setting. I have installation of VLANs, 125, 126 and 127 on my main switch with each of them having a layer 3 interface. I think that only the network of the VM (vlan 125) needs a layer 3 interface. In other words, my VLAN storage and vMotion is not routable by removing the 3 layer interface.

    Does this sound correct?

Another twist, I have a Juniper switch where all layer 3 interfaces are defined. It is connected to 4 switches in the rear of my IBM Bladecenter. Two of these switches are Cisco 1 GB switches that carry all traffic to the management through a vSwitch network. The other two switches are BNT 10 GB switches that carry traffic for Storage vMotion and VMs. Of course, it's a network connection, because it carries several VLANS.

My only question now is should I eliminate interface layer 3 on my storage network located on one vlan separate

Well, you need your storage system accessible on these IP addresses by the systems for the management of the other subnets or such? You already have all traffic from subnet inter between iSCSI and other networks? If this isn't the case, then there is no need to have routable iSCSI network.

For the ESXi hosts themselves there is usually zero reason to have vmkernel iSCSI interfaces be routable since you already do management etc on another routable network (and responses of hosts would be sent there as well except if you define static routes custom).

  • Can I use VM 2nd NIC to access target on the storage network?

I'm running ESXi 4.1 on an isolated network iSCSI network storage with 1 NIC physical on the management network, 4 physical network connected to the Production network interface cards, and 4 NIC physical and all my VM is Server 2008 x 64. Until the budget will allow, without my actually are Dell PE 2900 of servers running Windows Server 2008r2 and Microsoft iSCSI Software Target 3.3 with various sizes of PowerVault DAS, which is 15 to. Here's my question regarding this configuration. The environment in which I work in requires the use of an application that needs the access card to a server that has more than 10 TB of structured of maps and images. For the sake of future growth, I decided to go the normal way of iSCSI target as opposed to sharing/server configuration, so I created a 14.5 TB iSCSI Target .vhd and all my data have moved to this location. In addition, I have one of my servers iSCSI Initiator pointing to the target VM (exported snapshot)... through my network of production... where it is mounted as a read-only disc, configured as I need to be and spread my desktop map. This configuration works well, but the fact that my VM accesses the target via my production network is certainly not the way I need it to be installed, I really need to access the network storage iSCSI initiator. Confused yet? I really need to keep my out of the Production Network iSCSI traffic, but so far I have not been able to find a method to add a second NETWORK card on my virtual computer and put it on anything other than the VM network. I have no problem at all with my host ESXi accessing iSCSI target data warehouses that I created on my other AD, but obviously, there are enormous obstacles to the creation of a 14.5 TB data store, while a 14.5 to SAN target is very flexible and easy... now how can I shoot by the storage network team.

I appreciate the answers really, but I'm composing this House as VMWare communities are blocked on my work network. However, given that the responses are also sent to my email... I will receive them as text and therefore all references to added images etc will have to wait until I get to watch. Answers appreciated text.

    Thank you

    Confused yet?

    Yes, absolutely

I don't know if your configuration iSCSI in detail, please consider my suggestion carefully. Access the iSCSI virtual machine network directly should be as simple as adding a group of ports 'Virtual Machine' to iSCSI vSwitch and adding another virtual NETWORK card on the computer virtual - attached to the newly swanky group harbour - with an IP address in the range of iSCSI.

  • Creation of names of users and storage space began with the numbers or _ $#.

    Hi all

After watching a few google links, I want to sum-up rule for the design of Tablespace:

    1. always create tablespace locally managed (management of the measure).

    2. never create tablespace with hundreds of small data files to avoid a slower recovery.

    3. the types of segments that are used in the same way must be stored together.

    4. the system must be designed for the most common usage.

    5. the regions should be exceptions.

6 feud among storage space should be kept to a minimum.

    7. the data dictionary must be isolated.

    8. always give a name to the tablespace; so it may be easy to know what contains this tablespace.

    9 http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/index.cfm?TopicName=Recommendations_to_minimize_disk_I/O_contention&anchor=iooracle

    10. never use quotation marks double tablespace name.

11 create the tablespaces explicitly using CREATE TABLESPACE rather than implicitly by creating a table without specifying a tablespace name.

    12. create an a tablespace less as temporary for user types.

13 specify the suffix ".dbf" for names of applications datafile, '.log' for log data file names.

    14. set the default storage parameters to take into account the size of the typical object.

15 specify PCTINCREASE 0. Exceptions can only be made with the approval of the Central s/n.

    16 AUTOEXTEND must be enabled.

    17 MAXSIZE must be set.

After posting the links to doc, I want to sum-up rule for the creation of the user:

    1. always follow "Requirements Minimum for passwords"
    http://docs.Oracle.com/CD/B28359_01/network.111/B28531/authentication.htm#CHDFDHAJ

    2. never use double quotes with username and passwords.

3 assign a default Tablespace for the user.

4 assign a Tablespace Quota for the user.

5 avoid giving the ability for users to create objects in a table space, because the schema is the logical database for the user.

6 enable auditing for many reasons.

7 assign a temporary Tablespace for the user.

8 identify the appropriate profile and role to the user.

    9. only letters, numbers and the underscore character are allowed in names. Although Oracle allows for $ and the #, they are not needed and may cause unexpected problems.

    10. all names are uppercase. Or at least unimportant in which case. Ignoring this rule usually leads to making reference to the tables and the columns very clumsy because all names must be in double quotes.

    11. the first character of the name must be a letter.

    12. keep meaningful names, but at the same time, do not use long_names_describing_every_single_detail_of_particular_object.
