UCS C220 M3 - cannot install Ubuntu 14.04 OS

Hi all

I'm new to Cisco servers and we bought 3 servers UCS C220 M3.

For one of them, I would like to had installed an operating system Ubuntu (14.04). I tried hard but unsuccessfully to install the operating system on the server.

On this server, I have only one physical hard drive, because I'm not really interested in getting the RAID on this server. Initially, I started on a USB with Ubuntu image and installation worked fine. Then, I tried to boot from the hard drive, but it was impossible to find the hard drive in the boot menu.

You have no idea about it? I suspect that this is because the RAID of LSI sotfware controller is enabled and one thing to note is that I have not installed FlexFlash Cisco's SD card. Is - this mandatory? When I try to configure RAID 0, so I'm not able to install ubuntu (impossible to detect the drive with the Ubuntu Installer).

Thanks for any help!

Alex

If you set the UCS SW storage battery in AHCI mode, Setup see your local hard drive then?

What is the hard disk that you installed? Depending on whether you install a 32-bit or 64-bit OS and size of the disk you are installing, it may require that the UEFI boot options.

Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI for Ubunto UEFI install help.

If you have an installation ISO that you used to create the bootable installation USB, you might want to consider editing than the ISO via the virtual KVM, on the tab of the VM and begin your installer in this way.  This will require that a compatible version of Java to be active in your browser.

If you do not have a longer boot disk 2 TB, you might want to consider to keep everything in legacy bios mode and avoid the complexity of UEFI which can sometimes appear.

For drivers, these will actually be the C600 Intel or Intel AHCI drivers (depending on the mode you're looking for).

See the Readme in ucs-cxxx-drivers.2.0.8b.iso\Linux\Storage\Intel\AHCI\Ubuntu\14.04\ AHCI driver said that the ahci driver is already provided with the operating system...

I must stress that for Ubuntu, I see not all versions or versions of firmware that have been officially supported for the SR on board or AHCI controller.  Please visit http://www.cisco.com/web/techdoc/ucs/interoperability/matrix/matrix.html

Although you are able to run in AHCI mode, it is not officially test/pick-up.

In my view, the controller AHCI/PCH 6 port included with theM4 C240 is supported in Ubunto 14.04.

Thank you

  • Cannot install Ubuntu 14.04.2 on Acer Aspire E5 - 511G with Windows 8

Hello. I have tried everything I can to install Ubuntu 14.04.2 alongside Windows 8 on my laptop and I'm not going to be successful. I have Ubuntu on a USB key, and whatever I have, I get the message "the system has no USB boot option." So far, I have:

    -Disabled the quick start.

-Disabled Secure Boot UEFI firmware settings.

-Tried to set the USB FDD and USB HDD at the top of the order of priority of Boot and Windows Boot Manager to the lowest priority.

These measures appear to allow most people to access Ubuntu on their flash drive, but it does not work for me. Anyone know what I can try? Is there anyone here who has the same model and who has installed Ubuntu?

If USB is not, probably you did not create a proper EFI bootable USB.

Rufus allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive, selecting only for UEFI system.

  • Updated UCS c220 now cannot access MMIC

I've recently updated one of my servers UCS C220 with the huu Cisco 1.4 something to 2.0 (9f).  I said to all move so he just did everything that he is requiring the upgrade.  Now when I try to log into the the green bar MMIC rises, flashes and says logged on.  I rebooted, there repeatedly. It accepts my password because I can get into the wrong thing and he says username/password incorrect name.

Has anyone run into this and found a solution for this?

    Hey Danny,

You can SSH to the MMIC?

Try clearing your cache of browser and Java. Also to attempt to reach MMIC from another browser. It seems that when you upgraded, all the old information of MMIC are still in the cache.

Let me know if it works or if you're still having problems.

  • Cannot install Ubuntu Server 64-bit

Hey, I have a doubt, I think that my processor supports 64-bit operating system, then why I install Ubuntu Server 64-bit on VMWare?

My processor is Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3200 2.00 GHz

Some conditions must be met before a 64-bit guest OS could be virtualized:

    1. the transformer must be able to handle VT

    2. in the bios, this option should be enabled

    3. the host operating system should be a 64 bit OS in order to get good performance of the guest

Theoretically, it might be possible to run OS 64 - bit almost under a 32-bit host OS, but performance will be poor due to the emulation instead of virtualization. If this is not an option.

It is possible that the optionROM for the integrated card is not activated.  Try to enable it in the BIOS, you can via the MMIC (see cimc_enable_optionrom) must attached. You also want to verify that this option gets enable in the bios.
You can enter the bios by pressing f2 during boot (see BIOS_Option_ROM)

  • UCS C220 M3 custom problem after installing ESXi 5.1.0 Cisco

    Hello world

I m using a Cisco UCS C220 M3 when I tried to install ESXi 5.1.0 custom Cisco after complete the entire process and restart the server. The ESXi has not started it appeared as if there is no operating system.

In addition, before installing ESXi I configured a HDD in RAID 0, initialized the RAMDisk and chosen as a pilot.

    Hoping someone could help me.

    Llianovich,

Unfortunately, the on-board controller is not supported with ESXi.  I saw other people using this controller for VMware and makes the work but the behavior is very random and it could work or fail at any time. It is recommended to use one of the controllers of basic PCI or Mezzanine by the ESXi (see c220 m3 datasheet below)

    Hi Cameron

    Which option RAID you bought?

Is based on the RAID card, you can only create RAID 0, 1, 10

See Cisco UCS C220 M4 Rack Server Data Sheet

Modular Cisco 12 G SAS RAID controller
You can choose the Cisco 12 G RAID SAS controller, which plugs into a dedicated RAID controller card slot. This RAID controller supports RAID 0, 1, 10 (without option FBWC) and supports up to RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 6, 50, 60 (with FBWC option).

  • How can Cisco ucs c220 m4 I start with 12g cisco sas controller? 2012 UEFI Server installation issues

first time with cisco ucs c220 m4, check my photos

    You have a VD 11TB.

Only way to start on this is by using UEFI.

You need to activate UEFI in the boot order.

Anything over 2 TB and more 4 K sector size readers require the UEFI boot option.

BIOS will not process the VDs when manages UEFI.

    Kirk...

Summary for those who seek a similar question:

    • Client a large VD created, 11TB
    • 2 TB and more, 4K sector drives, require boot UEFI + GPT, cannot use the legacy/MBR
    • To set startup to local HD option, that referenced the PCI-E Slot, the raid controller was in (HBA slot in this case)
    • UEFI mode, can't score a VD as "bootable disk / startup.
    • You will see not the VD/raid controller appear in the 'real' boot order during the OS install.
    • Once the installation of the OS compatible UEFI is made, it will create a UEFI boot to the operating system "Windows Boot Manager" entry in our case.
    • After the next reboot, if you check your boot order, you should see this UEFI OS boot manager entry.
  • Generate a Certificate Signing Request on UCS C220 M3 running MMIC 1.5 (4th)

    Hello

I have a couple of servers UCS C220 M3 and to install certificates on them.

CA will not issue certificates with a 1024 module that seems to be the default created when generating a signature request using the GUI. The GUI I cannot put the module to a higher value.

I searched in the CLI, but it doesn't seem to be an option to do here.

The CLI guide said that there should be an 'extended security' cli command that would allow me to do this, but it is not present on my server of series C, so I think it might be available on the B series servers?

Anyone know if it is possible to change the module to 1024 which generation CSR on this model of server?

  • HP s 4330: cannot install Windows, freezes before restarting. [solved: chipset defective stepping]

    Hello!

I am banging my head on the wall with this case, can not understand, how to proceed.

My experience: I worked a few years as a computer store technician, especially on desktop computers, so at least vaguely, I know what I'm doing, and I'm very careful when handling material.

Background of the computer: I got a used HP 4330 s after the deceased family member. No fringe, pretty clean, no damage or traces of fall release. He had dead hard disk (click), broken DVD (engine brackets bent, I am told it is a child work) and was very dusty (blocked fan). I removed the optical drive, carefully removed all the dust, replaced heat is dedicated to the Sub CPU and put inside SSD, I took my other machine (erased). In the BIOS, I went from starting EFI.

I jumped into the USB with Windows 8.1 fresh install, which ran well, until he wanted to restart. Screen went blue/violet (same color as the background of the normal installation), and it stopped, no disk activity, nothing. I turned to bike it, Windows installation proceeds, but failed. This is repeated several times.

Steps I took to solve the problem:

-Legacy mode and I tried to install again, same result.

-Memtest Ran, past, memory switched to a few specimens (DDR3 and DDR3L), tried both slots, pass all, Windows will not complete the installation.

-Traded stock to i5 - 2520M i3 CPU I had to hang out, which has been removed from the machine work (during upgrade), same result.

-Done everything once again, this time without the battery and using big HP 120W 85x0w charger, same result

-Exchanged on a different disk, same result.

-Try exchanging AC7260 network card, only to discover he is blacklisted (* beep *?), removed wifi do map altogether, no change

-Traded thumbdrive to another, and I tried two different Windows 8.1 relies

-Turn off all devices in the BIOS, except USB.

-Tried to install Ubuntu, only to find out that it works perfectly, but it will not boot from EFI, had efibootmgr shows the correct entries, laptop says that it cannot find the operating system.

-Hiren Boot CD with BartPE is Windows XP starts and works very well.

-Check time CPU, at a time using reporting and pirometer software, it does not exceed 65 degrees Celscius in any moment, which is well below the critical temperature on both processors.

BIOS is F47. To my surprise, it is newer than what I can find in the download page (F07?).

Can what steps I take to close on the issue? I would leave it under Ubuntu, but I need Windows on this computer, and I'm afraid he's going to go belly up.

    Last updated.

First of all, doughjohn - problem is not in the initiation of the stop, but it will not accomplish the closure. There is almost everything disabled except BNT kernel and the video driver.

The problem has been very difficult to diagnose, until I found a friend who also had the same machine.

    And here's the final solution:

Like unbelieveble as it is, all three motherboards have manufacturing defects.

Problem is the chipset: all of them, as, as I suspected, have Cougar Point B2 chipset with SATA bug. This degrades the connection of the HARD disk. There were two clues: USB3.0 adapter SATA with Windows 8.1/10 work and fine closures. Same disk moved in the hard drive bay or optical Bay can not close correctly and works over slow (!). Second, was my friend who had same 4330 s specifications, but without problems. I disassembled the machine and to my surprise he chipset B3, with visible signs of flow around it, and fix the markings certified HP. This laptop was RMA would once. I moved my installation to his mother, and he also starts very well on SATA ports.

This is the first (and only) for laptop with Sandy Bridge-era components that suffer from a degradation of link chipset primary HARD disk SATA lines I've seen so far.

To sum up: HP, your fault this time.

I sold the laptop and I'm looking for a new machine, it will probably take HP 6470 B, if I can find all the components.

Thank you for all those that the air here and offered advice and guidance. I really appreciate your help!
