UCS startup strategy

Hello

I need to confirm what is the name WWN should we use primary and secondary targets during the SAN configuration when you configure startup strategy.

I think that this should be the WWN of SAN storage controllers

So what needs to be configured here assuming that we have 2 storage controllers. each controller contains 4-ports.

Thank you

Hello

Comment 2 has to do with the fact that, during the OS installation it is not yet installed, a multipathing driver that could cause disorders: see same lun 2 ways, but are not recognized as being the same.

Especially windows suffered; I think that 2012 Windows set this issue (maybe is related to the fact, that of W2012 on, paths multiple features are shipped with the OS).

At soon Walter.

    Sanjeev,

A vfc interface will remain in a State of detention until he is intialised by HBA ROM option or the OS drivers.  If you try to boot from SAN, make sure that you load the package Option ROM host Firmware for your service profile.  This applies to the Emulex & Qlogic based adapters.  Palo M81KR VIC option ROM will load automatically like it's a SAN target configured in the policy of starting.

    -What adapter are you using?

-If trying to boot from SAN, your startup strategy is configured with your SAN targets?

-If the initialization of local disk, HBA was responsible in the host operating system driver?

Answer/confirmation above and we will examine further.

  • Server Blade asking reboot or insertion of media.

We have suffered the loss of power and are now problems bringing our servers online. What is the best path to take when the server asks me to restart or insert media? Thanks for any help!

    Hello

It seems that you start from the SAN and your coming UCS before storage or SAN. Just restart the servers still once, after you make sure that your storage and san work well.

If anything I have said not to make sense to you, please check your configuration of startup strategy.

  • iSCSI Boot target IP Question

    Hi all

Setting up iSCSI starts for the first time and had a question.

Installation: Blades UCS about a pair of N5K (vPC) with a double NetApp controller connected.  There are 4 UCS vNIC - two for only iSCSI (as the VLAN native) and two for everything else.

The blades odd dΘmarrez since LUN on NetApp controller and the blades even dΘmarrez since LUN on NetApp B controller.

So my question.  When I make for an odd Blade (for example) iSCSI targets, do I have both A and B "NIC" s point on A controller's IP?  Or NIC - A point on A controller and IP point of NIC - B to B controller IP?  I was not sure that, in this example, the controller would hold unit number logic that this odd blade is starting from.

    Thank you!

    Hi Ian

You can add up to two iSCSI vNIC startup strategy. A vNIC acts as the source of primary iSCSI boot, and the other acts as the source of secondary iSCSI boot.

"point of NIC - A controller - A IP and NIC B points to the IP Address of the controller of B ' YES.

You would create another strategy of starting for blades, with the primary order / trade school.

    Can U help me?

PS: the system a 2.13 hole has

    Hello Stefan,

First of all, you have activated support SD card in local disk configuration strategy?

If so, is the part of the policy of the service profile?

Once you associate the service profile, enter the BIOS and make changes to the boot order of the devices.

    -on top of the doc.

When FlexFlash is enabled in a policy of local disk and a server is capable of supporting SD cards, the controller of FlexFlash will be activated during the deployment of service profile.

To manually start since the partition of the HV, Local disk should be present in the startup strategy used in the Service profile and be launched from the start of the BIOS (F6) menu.

    Limitation

If FlexFlash is enabled and the startup strategy contains the Local disk, boot SAN or iSCSI Boot, then the boot order can be determined. You should disable FlexFlash before using one of these startup options and enable once startup is complete.

  • NIC teaming on ESX 5.1 and NGC failover

    Hi all

A quick question. I know I read it before, but I can't find the reference again once. What is the recommended setting between allow vNic activate failover on cisco UCS and strategy setting on ESX 5.1 of the network?

I know that I had read somewhere when the grouping of network cards is configured on ESX failover authorized UCS, ESX goes haywire if a path is lost the UCS.

Our installation program running on UCS 2.04 Manager has with a mixture of blades M2 and M3 with M81kr and 1240/1280 cards respectively.

Never use a fabric with a hypervisor vswitch failover. Let the failover of the vSwitch handle network failure mechanism.

For ESX once you have two NICs attached to the vSwitch or a DVS it will automatically load balance and failover. You don't want you combine this with the UCS fabric failover.

    Thank you

    Hi, Jean Paul

I don't understand why you need a LUNESX7 zone? In the case of a JBOD it was common, but a storage subsystem allows you to hide the pwwn to the HARD drive behind the controller.

Let me summarize what you need to do to for example the start of SAN

    (1) create an SP with 2 vhba, vhba0, and 1; mapping vhba0 of fabric and fabric vhba1 b; create startup strategy, see 5)

    (2) vhba0/1 pwwn and area controller port fabric-fabric-a/b the storage subsystem

    (3) storage admin creates bootlun and maps/masks bootlun pwwn to vhba0 or vhba1

    (4) now the installation will see the bootlun, install the OS

    (5) in the case of MS, there is a startup policy, which defines in which vhba demand start going and the target pwwn = the storage subsystem controller port

There is no need to create another box for the boot process! what you do in 2) if applies to the installation of the OS and boot from SAN.

    Hope that helps

    Walter.

  • B200 M4 SAN Boot with attached local disk

    Hello

I have a B200 M4 blade want to do boot SAN in the storage Bay. The blade has a local disk. I need maintain disk local and would like to bypass for the start of SAN. When I set up a 'political Local Disk Configuration' using 'No Local Storage"as shown in the screenshot, and when I associate the blade with a service profile, got the error:"server does not meet the requirements of local drive of the service profile". I did some research and tried a BIOS policy that can disable the SAS RAID config, but it did not work, still getting the same error. See the screenshot of error and politics of BIOS. Advice to solve this problem?

    I use UCSM 2.2 (3f).

    Appreciate the pointers.

    Thank you

    Braven

If you just want to bypass the drive during startup, just don't include in your startup strategy.

No need to disable the onboard RAID controller.

  • Addition of data store errors & disconnects

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1008886 Hello all;

I'm a newbie to the VM community and have you met my 1st problem with vCenter and vSphere.

I have a host running ESXI 5.0.0 504890 located in a remote area

I am trying to add a data store and the following error (both through vSphere and vCenter)

Call 'HostDatastoreSystem.QueryVmfsDatastoreCreateOptions' of object 'datastoreSystem-xxxx"on vCenter Server 'VC FQDN' failed

I did some research and I found different communities showing to do:

My problem is that the SSH is not enabled on the console (which would require the 1 hour drive to the remote location).  Now PowerCLI is also installed but am not knowing enough commands to run the fdisk such as cited in the links above.

The missing data store are a Raid 1 (which I use for C:\ in my windows guests). Name of the data store is: naa.6d4ae520996553001745a2aa1130d644

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much

    Hello

You try to add the new host ESXi data store? If so, can you connect to the ESXi host using the password and vSphere client with the account 'root '. Then try to add the data store. If you try to add the existing data store, then it will format if you add using 'Add datastore' Wizard and you will lose data.

To enable SSH for ESXi 5.0,

To activate the local or remote TSM from the vSphere Client:

    1. Select the host, and then click the Configuration tab.
    2. Click on the security profile > Properties.

In ESXi 5.x, select SSH or ESXi Shell , and then click Options.
In ESXi 4.1, select a Support Local technical or Remote Tech Support (SSH) , click Options.

    3. Select the desired startup strategy and click Start, and then click OK.
    4. Check that the demon selected in step 3 indicates that execution in the Service properties window.
