Finally got all-in-one scan with the HP Mini success - so big thanks to Henry at Gateshead for his help there... :-)

  • How can I fix the .msi file extension?

Related to: Windows 8.1 how to define and restore file associations.

A year or two before, I tried to open an .msi file in the Windows Explorer (on object for reasons that I don't care). Although I can use 'Open with' dialog box to specify "Windows Installer" as a temporary workaround, I'm having difficulty to change to open with the default Windows installation program. Here is what does not work:

    • In "default programs", Windows Installer is not listed.
    • In "set associations", .msi is not listed.
    • On the context menu of the .msi files, 'open with' is an option, not a submenu. However, in the 'Open with' dialog box "always use the selected program..." is gray.

With the situation that I am, I think I have to change the registry to fix this file association. I am very familiar with the registry editor and have no problem with a fix in such a manner.

  • Windows Installer 5.0 will install MSI files

I am running Win 7 Ultimate and can Windows Installer works.  Any attempt to install a MSI file just opens a text describing the version 5.0 of Windows Installer and that's all I get.  How can I just reinstall Win Installer 5.0?  Or, what I have to do more than that?

Solved my problem... after trying many suggestions that came after I first asked my question, I finally ended up reinstall Win7.  It was very ugly and that's why I waited several months to do.  That, however, got rid of dysfunction of installation msi as well as several small nagging issues that had sprung up along the way.  I'll say it was the best reinstall of Windows I've ever done - things actually worked and the computer is back in action - with 1/10th of the programs she had installed on it before...

a: Click on Start > run

    Hi Jessen,

    Thank you for your answer!
I tried, but it did not help.
However, the solution that my local Consultant of the PC came with was 'no GUI', he turned off the GUI (for as far as I understand). In my view, that it changed the .msi file by adding this command.
    Best regards
    Sten.
