Under duress CPU host,.

Hi all

I face CPU - limited in ESXI 5.0 host problem. Below mention the issue summary.

DRS cluster with two hosts ESXi 5.0 is set to fully automated mode. A host in the cluster is running at 90%

CPU usage. The other host is running at 52 percent of use. After analysis, it appears that nothing virtual

machines are being migrated from the host CPU are limited, and no recommendation is generated.

What are the causes of the problem?

Thank you

Prashant

Hi Anthony,.

The problem may be two reason...

The port of VMkernal is attributed to the wrong Port

VMotion is not enabled on the port of VMkernal.

in the data center, I had 3 esxi 4.1 host. I raised vcetner on the new server, version 5, and I put one of the 3 esxi worm 4 new vCenter.

    First, everything seemed perfect.

I wanted to migrate worm 4 to 5 machines and gradually raise the whole dc to version 5, but there is problem with the migration.

  • Unique guest VM uses 100% of CPU Guest, but only 7% of the CPU host (includes screenshots)

We have a Dell T420 ESXi 5.5 server.  The host has to a single UC E5-2407 (4 Core 2.2 GHz without Hyperthreading), 16 GB of RAM and RAID storage.

The host runs a single VM Windows Server 2008, which was a P2V conversion.  The virtual machine is currently assigned 1 Plug and 4 Cores, corresponding to the host CPU.

Since implementing this server about a year ago, he had a problem recurring pop up every few months.  When the problem occurs, the Server 2008 VM suddenly max use of the processor and the terrible performance, but CPU is be contributed to the maximum, not by a single program, but several normal processes.  For example, WMI, explorer.exe and the Task Manager may show all 30% CPU usage.  In the meantime, even if the guest virtual computer has 100% CPU usage, the host will show only using 300 to 500 MHz of CPU, or about 7% of available.  It comes despite the fact that it is the unique virtual machine and has full reign of all the resources of the host.  If the problem seems to be not with an abnormal load on the Guest VM, but less than the resources of the host.

Restart the virtual machine does not correct the problem, and restart, which normally takes only a few minutes, lasts 30 minutes.  In the past, restart the ESXi host temporarily solved the problem, however it popup until today and persists even after several reboots of ESXi host.  See the attached screenshots for parameters and symptoms:

It's the performance monitor virtual machine, whereas the problem that happens.  Notes on the virtual machine, Windows 2008 reports 100% of a core 2.2 GHz CPU 4 CPU usage, while the side host, the CPU usage never goes 626 MHz.

    Other troubleshooting steps:

We changed number of vCPU on the VM from 4 to 1, without change.

We put the CPU reserve for the VM to 50% and 100%, no change.

The machine virtual was version 8 and we have updated to version 9, no change.

Has anyone ever experience this problem?  Any help towards a solution would be appreciated.

    Hello

I would say that it is somehow related to the fact that the VM was converted from physical server. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself:

Type of CPU on the computer old physical host and VM match? At least seller of CPU? It goes the same for the chipset: are there different chipset vendor on the two hosts?

What type of card NETWORK VM uses?

Has uninstalled the drivers card mother/CPU specific converted VM? The VM tools are installed?

Uninstall the old drivers of VM, currently they are not visible in the Device Manager here some is read: http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/virtualization-pro/removing-old-hardware-after-a-p2v-conversion/

I would also check the BIOS of the server - maybe there is some sort of option for active energy that interfere with the VM?

  • Maximum use memory and CPU host

    Hi all

I have a code that gives me the average cpu, memory of a host of more 1 day use, 7 days and so on.  I want to know is if it is possible to extract the maximum value of CPU usage and the memory of a host in the previous 7 days.  I would like to integrate this in a performance report.  Average usage over a week is fine, but I want to what the maximum value of the previous week was too. If my host CPU hits above xx % at some point, I'd like to be able to see and study if necessary.

Yes, you can get the maximum CPU usage and the memory of an ESX Server, as the statistical level that curl period is set to 4 (maximum level).

I suspect you use the cmdlet Get-Stat with the cpu.usage.average and mem.usage.average parameters.

For the maxima, you must use the cpu.usage.maximum and mem.usage.maximum parameters.

  • Change CPU host

I was thinking about upgrading my CPU on my server for vSphere.

I was wondering what I need to do to prepare for the change?

I do a complete reinstallation of vSphere? Does include reinstalling all my guests too, or can I save them and they will work on whatever material I have?

I also a guest of the 2008 Server is enabled with a license that can only be activated once, it will have to be reactivated (aka I will lose)?

    Thank you

Sorry if these are stupied questions just want to know what I'm getting myself in to

As mentioned, it's pretty much a plug-and-play operation, but backups are always recommended.

    Some other things to consider:

-If you go to 8-processor basis, then you may need to upgrade your license

-CPU change can change the EVC CPU mode if you use that.

One way to do this easier would be to create an array with the elements you want on it, as the name of the virtual machine, the use of the processor etc... and then you can filter/sort by CPU utilization, memory usage etc. and only have the Top 10 or anything else you like.

In case anyone is wondering, I use Solaris 11.0 because we want to use ZFS with physical RDM to create a NAS for this virtual machine.  Unfortunately, Solaris 11.1 (and above) + physical RDM = purple ESXi screen (see Bug report: 11.1 Solaris + RDM = screen ESXi 5.1 violet).  Apparently, this problem was supposed to be fixed in ESXi 5.5 but still there in ESXi 6.0U1.  I tested (physical RDM + ESXi 6.0U1 + 11.1 Solaris) and (ESXi 6.0U1 11.3 Solaris + physical RDM).  The two combinations result in purple screen.

It is interesting however, Solaris 11.1 (and above) without physical RDMs does NOT suffer from the slow rise of above host CPU utilization.  So, either I cope with a rise in CPU host weird or purple screens :-(

In case anyone has the same problem, I solved this superuser.com class.

In summary, the root cause was a storm of interruption in my Solaris 11.0 VM due to an incompatibility between ESXi and Solaris 11.0 interrupt timing mode.  Add the following line to/etc/System on the Solaris VM solved the problem.

Apparently, the virtual machine hardware upgrade exposed a few additional things virtual machine that prevents vmotion to work.  I don't know what and I'm quite surprised because these machines are identical identical hardware and firmware.

In the hierarchy of the VI of objects, there are some hidden folders.

It does not appear in the VIC, but you can see them with the managed object browser (http:///mob).

You can do for records created under the node hosts & Clusters

    Get-Folder Datacenters | Get-Folder -NoRecursion

The centers data folder is hidden folder that corresponds with the node hosts & Clusters.

Since you only want to see the records of the child add us the parameter -NoRecursion.

Sir I wat a rule if a process has less de.1% CPU, triggers a warning.

I think that the subject of topology is AppMonitor_ProcessTotals

Look at the rule called "Process_Availability", you can probably copy and reuse

  • ESXi 4.1 Westmere EVC does not not with Ivy Bridge CPU

    Hi all

I'm under 4.1U3. I have a cluster that has 8 guests inside. 6 of them are processors E7-2860. Two of them are processors E5-2680v2 (new). vCenter will allow me to select CVS. However after activated and I turn on a few virtual machines on one of the new hosts it tells me "the cluster cannot be configured with vMotion compatibility mode Enhanced selected; Features CPU disabled by this mode are currently in use by power or suspended virtual machines in the cluster. »

Also, when I try to migrate one of these virtual machines for new guests to one of the E7-2860 hosts it won't pass validation saying "CPU host is incompatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to leval CPUID register 0 x 1"ecx".»

The only thing I can think is the E5-2680v2 is not supported on 4.1 and so CVS is not working properly. Any ideas on that?

    screengrab1.PNG

    screengrab2.PNG

I tried to add this line, but there was no change.

I found that if I change

    cpuidMask.val.1.eax = '0 x 00020651' (the value defined by VCA)

    TO

    cpuidMask.val.1.eax = "0x000106a4".

    vMotion will validate.

I found that by creating a new cluster and defining the level of evc to Nehalem. I put one of the new hosts in this cluster and observed what has changed/etc/vmware/config. I noticed that the following values have been defined in the new cluster.

    cpuidMask.val.1.eax = "0x000106a4".

    cpuidMask.val.1.ecx = "0x0098e23d".

So I put this host in the cluster of origin and the value of these values and vmotion worked. The two vmotion from the new host for other hosts and also hosts of origin to the new host has worked.

So I tried just to set the value of eax and leaving the ecx value to the default value of the bunch and who also worked. So I don't know why vCenter is reporting an issue with the register ecx register when its eax which was the problem.

If at this point, I think that my options are to create a cluster with the new hosts until we have upgraded 5.5 or walking with the value of eax changed for now. The problem with running with the changed value is vCenter it resets the host goes into maintenance mode or reset.
