  I can't help you with the trend, but from memory, you must allow it's Installer to download to facilitate the download and installation etc.

  I have a Dell Xps 420 with Vista 32 bit. Last night I let it update and standing on its own, when I turned it on this morning it said update 3 of 3 0%.
