updgrade ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1

Hello

I know there are various documents on the upgrade from ESX 3.5 to 4.1 and I read some of them, but I need help from those who have

experience.
My current configuration
Material:
1 HP BladeSystem C3000 enclosure
  • 5 blades ProLiant BL460c G1

  • 1 NetApp FAS2020 where all my VM:s (NSF)

  • 1 NetApp FAS2020 where all my VM backups

Software:
  • ESX 3.5 update 5

  • VCenter 2.5 runs on a virtual machine, windows 2003 32-bit

  • Database SQL2005 Express runs on Vcenter

  • NetApp Snapmanager

My new Setup:
Material:
  • 1 HP BladeSystem C3000 enclosure

  • 5 proLiant BL460c G7

  • We use the same ESX 3.5 current storage systems use

Software:
  • ESX 4.1

  • VCenter 4.1 works on a new G7 BL460c, windows 2008 R2

  • Sql2008 database running on another server

  • NetApp Snapmanager

Our plan:
  • No upgrade ESX 3.5, but install ESX 4.1 on 5 new knives

  • Move/migrate 30 VM:s of ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1 hosts guests again

  • Keep the old host ESX 3.5 to run virtual machines, but these ESX 3.5 will administer the new Vcenter 4.1

My question:
  1. I have to keep the database I had on the old environment?

  2. I should updgrade the database? If so, why?

  3. Can I cancel the registration of a former host to vcenter 2.5 and enter it with the new VirtualCenter and migrate it is the VM:s of this new host-to-host 4.1 and upgrade then VMware VM:s tool and virtual hardware?

  4. What about a virtual machine that has snapshots?

Thanks for all tips

If you delete snapshots, actually will not delete files in your virtual machine. It will merge the files newly updated with your base vmdk file. The only ting that you lose is that you can't return to your virtual machine to your restore point.

    Hello

    1. have there been recent changes to the system before the show?

    2 is the issue limited to the specific program?

    Method:
    Vista DB.esx is a file that is used in the Kodak Easy Share software. I suggest you to uninstall the software by using the Kodak Easy Share clear utility. ESApp.dll made reference to the easy share Application file.

    Disable the utility for KODAK software

    If you are facing problems to uninstall the program, I suggest you run the fix it convenience store and check if it helps.

  • AX150 - favorite way - ESX 3.5

    Hi all

    I have a client with an AX150 directly connected to the x 2 ESX3.5 servers. (I do not sell or implement!)

    From what I've looked through ESX, it seems that on volumes is access through different SP for each ESX host.

    From memory, I think the AX150 is an active-passive array and think that this may be the cause us any performance problem. I have been through the WEB GUI to try to see how to push the volume to another path, but cannot find the settings... I also tried VIA the ESX host, but he just spat and error return.

    Is anyway to favorite a LUN via the WEB UI controller?

    • Use of memory for the server ESX VMW

    I made this two days before configuration, but still no alarm generated for this rule.

    Help the creation of a test of the abveo metric ESX alarm

    Hi - I ended up having to do such things in the past as well. I just built a virtual machine added lots of processors and memory, then for the CPU, I used the script CPUBusy.vbs from VMware (Google search which) and down it load times so that he began to max real physical processors... For memory, I just opened a massive text file in Wordpad and scroll up and down it. This gave me the circumstances to test the alarms, just don't do as a busy time or use some dev ESX servers... • Monitoring selected VM, ESX, cluster hosts

    Hello

    I check if it is possible to select the specified ESX host or Virtual Machines to monitor instead of pulling all the VMS and hosts in Foglight? Thank you.

    Kind regards

    Jamie.

    You can via a user name, but we do not support that.  The problem lies in the case you have a virtual machine, and then you forget about the potential problems with the host.  If you have only a few hosts, it could miss part of a cluster or something else using the storage...  There are many cases where not having not any data could cause problems, so we don't support all a vCenter.

  • Serial numbers of the ESX host

    Is it possible to account for the serial numbers of physical ESX host?  I can easily make name, esx version and build, but the last thing needed would be the serial number (knows what vCenter).  He is buried somewhere in the views I have just lack?

    BTW, I'd LOVE to have the search bar in creating tables.  Drilling through an infinite hierarchy of objects can be quite tedious!

    I m sure that the license information is not collected. Transmits your search bar request along to the Foglight core team for review.

    Thank you!

  • Connect a Powervault MD1200 to a PowerEdge R710 5.1 running esx using SAS cables

    Hello

    I bought a Powervault md1200 and a perc h800 controller.

    I'll install the perc controller in my PowerEdge r710 5.1 running esx server.

    Then connect the md1200 to the r710 via sas cables. The powervault is no NIC.

    My question is, how to configure the RAID while booting the r710? I understand that if I were on Windows, I could use open manage but I'm not familiar with how to do this from a 5.1 esx server.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Thank you

    Flynn

    Hello Flynn,

    What you need to do is to go into the Bios of your H800 controller and you can then configure your virtual disk MD1200.  Once you have the virtual disk created, then you will be able to do a scan in ESX & he should see the virtual disk that are created.  To access the boot controller bios you need to hit Ctrl + C to enter the bios.

    Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • How to associate cluster esx with the data report store

    Hi all

    I'm running a repore that displays data stores less than 50 free concerts. The storage team would like a coloum for esx clusters associated with the LUN. I can't see to find it and what is possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Scott.

    I would create a WCF function, script type, with a timeRange parameter and a new data store VMWDatastore context parameter, required, not a list.  Set the output in common: string.

    Add the following script:

    QS = server. QueryService

    Query = "!" "VMWCluster where esxServers.datastores.uniqueId = ' ${datastore.uniqueId}"

    cluster = server. QueryService.queryTopologyObjects (query)

    clusterNames = clusters? collect {cluster-> cluster?. name}?. Join(', ')

    return clusterNames

    You can then use this in your report, feeding the entrance of context for the current row data store.

  • The ESX host is in maintenance mode

    Hello

    I tried to configure VMware ESX 5.1/5.5 pass through for a 8 GB Qlogic FC HBA on PowerEdge 2970 server.

    Even after activation of the virtual technology in the BIOS, the PCI device is not listed in "Advanced settings" to configure pass-through. Attached screenshot shows the current setting of the processor.

    Y at - it all the additional steps required to configure it.

    Hello Sara

    You're talking Direct path IO or single root i/o virtualization? If so, none of these features are supported on the 2970 system.

    http://www.VMware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

    I don't think that or the other of these characteristics were available until our 11 generation systems.

  • Change the rule VMW ESX Server disconnected

    Hello

    I wonder, is there an option not only get e-mail message with the name of the disconnected ESX, but also to get a list of all the virtual machines on this ESX.

    Best regards

    Victor

    Hello Victor,.

    You can do this:

    Add new rule Variables:

    Type of expression

    def x = scope.get ("virtualMachines")

    def y = x.name;

    return y

  • You can create a view that filters (ESX host) Linux machines on the view of the Infrastructure?

    Hello

    We have recently implemented Foglight and VMware plugin. As part of the VMware plugin, Foglight pulls in all the Linux VM machines including the ESX host. Our team of Linux only manages the running redhat Linux hosts. They fail the ESX VM guest. That said, is there a way to create a view that shows only the hosts running redhat Linux?

    For example the view of rail infrastructure below contains 88 Linux machines, but nearly half of them are ESX hosts for our Linux team would not see all these. Is it possible to filter these?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

    Tony

    The easiest way would be to create a personalized, pair it with Infrastructure and then create a dynamic management component.  This will help create you a rule for "All hosts" where you can find just the hosts that are not of the ESX host and run Linux.

    The query would be:

    detail.topologyTypeName! = "VMWESXServer" & os.longName like «% Linux»

  • HowTo generate by ESX report alarms?

    Hi all

    I use vFoglight v6.1 pro to monitor my VMware Lab Manager environment.

    It is needless to mention that I get tons of alerts several types.

    As part of my effort to reduce the amount of alerts vFoglight, I disabled a lot of alerts under Administration--> rules Admin &--> manage rules.

    I left only referring to my ESX memory alerts | swap | CPU which gives me more visibility of the State of my environment.

    The thing is I'm having a problem generating a statistical report that will give me specific information on how alertsI have on each of my ESX hosts by type.

    I need an easy way to show more of memory or cpu required and prove the increase of resources actually solved the problem.

    This must be done through vfoglight level reporting.

    I'll be happy to get assistance to each and every one of you, if you know the inner workings of the vfoglights.

    Thank you very much

    Nissim.

    Here are a few steps you can try:

    Navigate to the home alarms

    In the upper right corner of the dashboard alarms, set the time interval, you are interested. For example "7 d" for 7 days.

    To the right of the table of alarms in half the dashboard lower alarms, click on "filter alarm.

    In the field "Origin" on the popup filter, type in "VMW ESX" (this will filter the alarms for ESX most of alarms)

    The results of all ESX alarms for the last 7 days will be displayed, use the error Instances see the breakdown of the alarms tab how by host, but also the history of the health of these hosts in the selected time interval

    Use the Customizer button to export the alarms to Excel, and select export (it's the last option when you click the customizer, screenshot see attached)

  • New ESX servers

    Hello
    I am currently trying to replace my ESX servers that are currently being monitored using vFoglight.
    Someone can remind me how to point foglight on the new ESX servers or does it enter its information via the administration server?
    Thank you very much

    It is at the level of the vCenter. While the new ESX servers are managed by the vCenter, hen he get them automatically.
