  I start by upgrading our joint field of ESX 3.5/4.0 to 4.1 and decided now would be the perfect time to migrate to ESXi. Now I want this migrate to ESXi 4.1, so my idea is to put a USB in (as this is a Dell T710 she has an internal USB port), and then run the Setup ESXi 4.1 directly on the USB. In theory, this should work fine, I understand that I will need to put in place networks etc. because it will not pick up the config of the ESX existing install. Someone had problems with their local data warehouses wiped even if it is installed on a stick? ESXi does his thing format only on the first boot, and if so can I simply remove hard drives related to store data before the first start, then put them back in later?

  No, there is no way to upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1. However. According to the vSphere 5 Upgrade Guide (see http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-pubs.html) an ESX/ESXi 4.x upgrade to ESXi 5.0 is supported (as long as 4.x installation is not an upgrade from 3.x)

  I need to upgrade our current VMware ESX 3.5 cluster for the ESXi 5.1. To summarize the migration, we will use all of the new materials for vsphere 5.1 5.1 ESXi and new iSCSI SAN.

  Existing/current cluster environment (about 44 vms) is as follows:-vcenter (version 2.5) (1) and (3) dell servers to ESX 3.5 for a total of 4 servers, storage Fibre Channel EMC CX 300.  We went ahead and bought 4 new Dell servers and storage iSCSI, SAN Compellent Dell to replace the current environment.  The only difference is that the NEW strorage for cluster 5.1 will not fibre channel, but will rather iSCSI.

  I read a few post regarding similar improvements which I have summarized, but I'm a little unsure of how to proceed in particular relative to the storage side, (cluster running FC and iSCSI for new cluster).

  1. install Vcenter 5 on of the new material/vcenter Server

  (A) disconnect all ESX 3.5 knots of vcenter 2.5 and plug the new Vsphere 5 and set up the cluster

  (B) connect all new ESXi 5.1 nodes to the new vsphere 5 for the new Vsphere 5 cluster will contain all of the new and the old 3.5/ESXi 5.1 ESX servers

  -This is where I am confused.  My plan is to have the new cluster 5.1 vsphere manage guests to vmotion ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1, the old 3.5 ESX virtual machine in the new 5.1 ESXi.  Can I add new nodes 5.1 ESXi or ESX 3.5 to the new cluster 5.1 first, or that matter which node I add first?  Also, the new 5.1 ESXi hosts should have access to FC storage that the old ESX 3.5 has access to?  In other words, the new and old ESX/ESXi hosts would need to have visibility to the FC SAN for vmotion, right?  I do not know if I can add the ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1 to the new cluster if not all guests have access to the old CF storage?

  3. plan downtime for virtual machines and upgrade virtual hardware (use of snapshot before you upgrade upgrade goes bad snack)

  4 use storage vmotion to move vm data warehouses to the new iSCSI SAN

  Introduce the new iSCSI LUNS to the new cluster and make a storage vmotion to move storage vm of FC SAN to the iSCSI SAN.

  I am planning a migration of ESX 3.5 Uptade 2 to ESXi 4.1 Update 1 in September.  Material welcomes VI environment is in place for renewal of the lease.  I build the new environment vSphere and attach to the same storage shared as the existing ESX VI 3.5.  My plan is the following...

  1. Get and install a new hardware server (C3000 and BL460C G7).
     
  2. Installing vCenter 4.1 (leave vCenter in demo mode to expose all the features)
     
  3. Configure the plugin Update Manager vCenter
     
  4. Install ESXi 4.1 Update 1 on new hosts and add to vCenter 4.1
     
  5. Configure the new Cluster and configure HA and vMotion. (We are allowed for vSphere 4.1 Standard Edition)
     
  6. Linking hosts to Update Manager and sanitize with all updates.
     
  7. Configure virtual networks (host profiles are an option while in demo mode).
     
  8. Fix new hosts of VMFS existing databases.  (Data banks are VMFS version 3.31)
     
  9. Disconnect the Virtual Center 2.5 3.5 ESX host and add them to the new vCenter 4.1.
     
  10. Cold migrate VM ESX 3.5 hosts ESXi 4.1 bed and breakfast hosts
      
  11. Upgrade VMware tools on all guests.
      
  12. Upgrade all the guests computer virtual from version 4 to version 7.
      
  13. Detach the ESX host 3.5 since VMFS data warehouses.
      
  14. Remove the ESX 3.5 hosts vCenter 4.1
      
  15. Install all keys in license vSphere 4.1 (vSphere Standard Edition)
      
  16. Start the VM guests.
      
  17. Close and dismantle the old ESX 3.5 hosts.
      

  Any feedback is most appreciated.  Please let me know if I'm missing something.

  Then, you'd weigh your losses.  Do you have the characteristics of the hardware virtual v7 for these virtual machines or can you live with material v4?  Personally, I needed the changed block tracking which requires hardware v7.  It really comes down to what you need.  I recommend bringing them up to v7 but that's just my opinion.

  We have 2 vMware infrastructure. Separate ESX 3.5 and ESXi 4.1 two farms

  What would be the best practices with minimal downtime to migrate all our virtual machines of one infrastructure to another. Each Infrastructure is own San but it should be possible for the new ESXi environment access data stores in ESX 3.5 environment.

  It would be recommended to guests unregister and re-register in the new server farm, then follow the steps to update to vmware-tools first and then vHardware?

  In my opinion, there will be 3 reboots during this process with windows clients that will account for most of the downtime?

  Minimum stopping time can be obtained in this way:

  (1) register all 'old' hosts new vCenter

  (2) SAN share between the old and the new cluster

  (3) if there are hardware changes then you can activate CVS for the new cluster or turning off the virtual computer, migrate and switch

  (4) vMotion VMs to new cluster

  (5) turn off the new SAN access to old hosts

  This will work with ESXi 5.1 only, because the host needs to treat the new host profile options that are associated with caching stateless and stateful installs, and will not be an ESXi host 5.0 to recognize and use these options.

  Important is our exchange and Conroller of domain and DNS servers are also Virtual Machines and our customers work 24 x 7.

  It is the same for a reconstruction.  If you use a channel fiber storage system, do not change the WWN.  Don't forget to unplug the cables before the rebuild, then when full.

  I'm trying to find the documentation, guide or any details on this and have developed short on cisco.com and docwiki.cisco.com I hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

  To simplify my question let say, we have a current ESX 4.1 environment with VM servers running the following applications: CUCM, CUPS, CUC, UCCX. (does it matter if they are running 8.5/8.6 or 9.1?)

  If we were to move to ESX 4.1 to 5.1 What is the impact on the servers of Cisco? What are the procedures? Anything specific Cisco or a development warn that must be taken into account? And especially (can not find the answer to anywhere) we must redeploy the OVAs (from v7 to v8 to match) during and after the ESX upgrade?

  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Correction and update of VMware vSphere, ESXi

  • In general, versions of Cisco Collaboration app mandate only the major and minor of ESXi versions they demand / support.
  • Guest OS support - Cisco's Collaboration applications that require a minimum Maintenance release (e.g. "5.1 U1' as minimum instead of"5.1"as minimum) for the application to be supported explicitly call this point on their product detailed pages.  When in doubt, consult Cisco Plan, design, implement (PDI) HelpDesk or Cisco TAC.
  • Supports hardware - version for a major/minor taken ESXi supported by Cisco's Collaboration applications, recommendation is to use the latest version of Maintenance which is also supported / recommended by the provider of servers (and storage if provider deployment to NAS/SAN).  To determine if a fix or a Maintenance of ESXi version "may" or "should" be deployed, follow the advice of these sources:
