AutoDeploy 5.1 in ESXi 5.0 environment

I'll put up an AutoDeploy POC for our ESXi 5.0 environment and one of the objections to another engineer is the availability. He suggested to use the new feature in 5.1 of vSphere Auto deploy without caching and Stateful installs http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2032881

Know if or have experience with the help of AutoDeploy 5.1 in an ESXi 5.0 environment. Plans to upgrade to 5.1 is disabled in the future and not have a method for caching without State and Stateful installs might be a show-stopper.

Thank you

Tim

Hi Tim,.

This will work with ESXi 5.1 only, because the host needs to treat the new host profile options that are associated with caching stateless and stateful installs, and will not be an ESXi host 5.0 to recognize and use these options.

I installed ESXi 5 on my vmware workstation and tried to install windows server 2008 R2 64-bit on it but every time I tried I faced with an error message saying that the 64-bit operating system is not possible. I neet to install windows server 2008 R2 64-bit for the transfer running server and you know this server must be a virtual thing and should be managed by vcenter server.

According to the newspaper, the choice of 'Virtualiser VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/IVR' should not be available in the settings of the virtual machine to the virtual machine.  Note that this box is different from the drop-down list "preferred method".

Virtualized EPT-x/VT or AMD-V/IVR is a new feature introduced with Workstation 8.0 and requires the latest virtual material.  First of all, upgrade your VM ESXi virtual material by going to VM-> manage-> change hardware compatibility and select compatibility with "Workstation 8.0."  Then, change the settings of the virtual machine, click the processors tab and check the box 'Virtualiser VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/IVR.'

  • Upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESXi.4.1 environment

    Hello

In our environment, we use VMware ESX 4.0.0 but now we try to improve our environment to ESX 4.0.0 to ESXi.4.1.0

All ESX hosts are bladecenter and they use a shared storage (SAN).  All ESX are in a cluster in vCenter.  In vCenter Vmotion, DRS and HA of this cluster is on.

If no on has upgraded their VMware ESX 4.0 environment to ESXi 4.1.0 then please let me know any upgrade.

What are the important things that I have to take care. I also want to know what are the documents I have to do before moving on to ESXi 4.1.0

Can I add ESX and ESXi hosts in a single cluster and create the mixed environment?

If there are suggestions, process shots, material or screen then let me know.

    Thank you and best regards,

Q 1) I also want to know, if I don't want to destroy any shared data store, then what precautions should I take?

For us, when you get new buildings we cables optical fibre on the back of the hosts, this way to protect yourself against any chance of putting in form of a shared logical unit number.

(Q 2) after the migration of all the virtual machines from one host to another that I have to get out of this host to vCenter and then I need to install ESXi or I can install ESXi without removing the host to vCenter.

you need to remove the host to vCenter. Once the host has been rebuilt, 'add host' in vCenter.

(Q3) also do what are the essential documents that I need to do before you rebuild the ESXi 4.1.0 so it will help me to reconfigure after installing ESXi?

  • My ESXi 4 demo environment is very slow

I wanted to play with ESXi 4 and also Windows 2008 R2 so I thought why not combine the two.  So using a HP DL380 G5 with a processor dual core and 2 GB of memory, I built a simple test box ESXi 4 and I installed a Windows 2008 R2 VM on it.  I use 2 146 Go local disks (RAID-1) to host the data store and ESX is also running on the same disks.

Even after you have installed VMware tools in the virtual machine, it is the slow dinner.  It takes about 10 minutes to start (just sitting there with a black screen during most of this time) and simple things like click on the start menu, take a very long time.  It's the fact that I use the local drive of the problem?  I expect has a single box VM to run 'OK' in this environment (I don't expect fireworks from this bad boy), but it's really really horible.  It is unusable.

Someone at - it advice or suggestions.  The virtual machine has 1.5 GB of memory assigned to it and 1 vCPU.

    SB

ESXi takes a little memory for overhead.  Look at the resources page to see what the system is to memory and then lower the settings of the virtual machine to see if it improves.  Your server must be running a number of virtual machines on the fine just of local storage, but if approve you memory then ESXi begin on page and performance will slow down.

Not sure if this could be a problem with the use of VMWare ESXi 5.0 and not 4.1 or if something happens.

    Thanks in advance

At officially ISE support only the Vmware 4.x. So I'd say it's the 5.0.

Also try "application reset-config EHT"... If it doesn't fix it then it is without a doubt 5.0

  • best practices for the deployment of resiliency using a single ESXi host

I was wondering if anyone had some advice or a deployment guide for ESXi in an environment without using a cluster. If the cost was not a factor I'd put it in a pool, but this can be done. So, assuming that it is an ESXi host with multiple network cards, which would be a good way to cover areas such as backup and restore when you use the free version? The machines that would go on is not mission-critical if there is a pretty good time that machines could be down without causing problems, however, I want to be sure that if the machine were to explode then there will be a way to recover the virtual machines running on this subject.

    Ideas?

I think, there is no better practical form VMware vSphere Hypervisor (free version) use, but maybe you'll find some ideas here: How to get VMware cost barriers - build an empire around the free VMware hypervisor

  • Standard (non-express) - card PCI Passthrough/VMDirectPath broken in ESXi 5.5?

    Hello

I use VMDirectPath/PCI passthrough with 2 cards in an ESXi 5 host environment:

    -The first card is a standard-PCI (not express), a "AVM B1 ISDN-Controller.

-The second is a card PCIe, a "Renesas USB 3.0 controller"

The two cards passthrough'ed work correctly with ESXi 5.0 for a long time...

After an upgrade to ESXi 5.5, the relay of the card to the PCI standard is no longer in effect:

-Two cards are listed very well as passthrough devices ' ed in the vSphere client

-Two cards are configured with "msiEnabled = FALSE" in the virtual machine, no error occur at power to the top of the virtual machine

-Two cards are listed without errors in the Device Manager of Windows Server 2003 in the VM - no exclamation point appears

-L'USB 3.0 controller works fine, devices are recognized and are accessible

    - But, the driver for the PCI ISDN card indicates an error in the Event Viewer system log in the Windows virtual machine: "the card can not be found" and the map does not work

After re - install of the 'old' ESXi 5.0 and restore a backup of the configuration, all works fine again.

A ' cat vmware.log | grep-i CPPI"VM file log shows no relevant difference regarding PCI passthrough between ESXi 5.0 and 5.5.

No idea what changed in ESXi 5.5 compared to 5.0 in PCI card passthrough/VMDirectPath ESXi?

    Thank you

  • ESXi test with disconnected network run?

I practice the migration of my current server VMware ESXi 5 2 environment.  Everything seems smooth with the conversion to the test area that will hold everything until the new server is in place.  I wish I could on ESXi machines just to make sure I can document the traps and understand the fixes before doing it for real in fact.

I use the 5 ESXi as a virtual machine on my 8 processor AMD FX-8350 4.0 Workstation (4 allocated) GHz with 16 GB of RAM (8 GB allocated) and a TB of space assigned to the datastore1 of the VM.  I installed a second NETWORK card and configured the virtual computer to use it. I installed the client vSphere on the workstation itself.  I also created a virtual machine inside the VM ESXi running server 2008 std, vsphere client and veeam tools.

    Hello

    Here are two options.

    First option

Right click on virtual machine---> edit configuration---> network adapter---> uncheck the box to connect to the power on option.

    Second Option:

Create virtua vswitch on ESXi host without adding any nic vSwitch. Create machine virtual portgroup in this vswtich. Add this port group to this machine of virtua.

Both this option will be the machine of course that is not network.

  • VCA enabling on ESXi 4.1

I'm going to need allow EVC on the DRS Clusters in my ESXi 4.1 environment vCenter server is on a virtual machine. I read the following KB

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1013111

My question is is it really necessary to create a cluster and follow the steps in this KB? Can I not only turn off all my virtual machines to a particular cluster and select CVS then return on the virtual machines? I have two groups one is a 'cluster of infrastructure' that contains the servers such as vCenter, SQL etc. I will not be allowing CVS on this group. I have a second "Cluster VDI" group who I will be allowing EVC. So on that VDI cluster may I've just turning off the option activate VMS VCA, then power the virtual machines on?

    Thank you!

    Welcome to communities!

KB1013111 you are talking about is applicable only for vCenter 4.0.x I guess you already vCenter 4.1 running in your environment.

Note: It is possible to add a host with an EVC cluster VMS running as long as none of the virtual machines on the host running instructions not supported by the EVC baseline with vCenter Server 4.1. If any virtual computer executes a statement not supported by the basis, that a warning is displayed.  For more information see the Guide of Administration of Datacenter vSphere.

If you plan to activate the VCA on the cluster if vCenter fails then you should be good to STOP the virtual machine, put the host in MM and select CVS. Reference KB1009571

  • Migration of VM to ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4.1

    Hello

I am currently working on the migration of our vCenter 2.5 / ESXi 3.5 environment to vSphere 4.1 / ESXi 4.1.

I built a new vSphere 4.1 / ESXi 4.1 environment and have removed a host ESXi 3.5 vcenter 2.5 with the management of the virtual computer and added to a temporary cluster environment vSphere 4.1 to 3.5 hosts.

I use dvSwitches in vSphere 4.1 and shared storage on hosts of 3.5 to 4.1. All guests, 3.5 and 4.1 may see the same LUNS and data warehouses.

I'm looking at the best way to migrate the virtual machine to the host 3.5 to 4.1 hosts.

I'm unable to migrate a virtual computer between the 3.5 and 4.1 host computer as network configurations do not match. Is my only other option to remove the server from the inventory, then add it to the host 4.1?

    Thank you

    Ben

Just an idea. Assuming that you can release at least a single NETWORK card, you could create a standard vSwitch with the 'old' port group names temporarily and migrate virtual machines. Once done, you can change the network settings on the virtual machine to point to the dvSwitch.

  • Setting up MS server 2008 + Sharepoint and MS Exchange 2008 on ESXi 4.0

    Dear people,

    I setting upward the above and would like help on how to get better on the installation;

    (1) MS Exchange Server Management 2010

    (2) and MS Win Server 2008 * (Active Directory + Sharepoint).

Does anyone have useful information or items of 'How To' for installation in a VMware ESXi 4.0 environment?

Also, more specifically, I have already experienced the 256 GB limit I would prefer to have more large size of disc than this.  Is it possible to have a

larger size of drive to the server? If so, how?

If this is not what is the size of space disk would be an urge?

    I thought I had:

    C: (OS) 125 GB

    D: (data) 256GB

    E: (DATA) 99 GB

    A better suggestion is welcome.

    Thank you very much

    Vinny

As a first step, I'd look through the following measures. http://www.VMware.com/solutions/business-critical-apps/

You can change the maximum disk size by recreating the data store with a larger block size. You will need to delete the existing data store, so if you already have VMs that are assigned to the data store you migrating to another place, then move them back.

  • ESXI Server

    Hello to all!

Can I add a server ESXI one my existing ESX 3.5 infrastructure?

This server can you be part of the cluster of ESX 3.5 servers already existing?

If so, can I make the vmotion between ESX Server and ESXI Server?

That is the advantage to have an ESXI server in an ESX environment that does not exist?

    Thank you

    Hello

Yes you can add an ESXi server in your existing infrastructure.

Yes on the year to cluster United Nations and Yes on can do make the VMmotion.

But reminds you that if you want to manage from your virtual Center, HA, do the Vmotion will it take the necessary licenses.

I don't really see advantage to insert an ESXi in an environment that does not exist, if the payer has to pay all these liceces, as well take the full version of ESX.

The big desanvantage of ESXi is the service Console is not accessible, which is sometimes necessary pour some utilities and script APIs are only in read-only mode.

  • Installation problems using the .img download Microsoft Action Pack on DVD for Windows 2012 Server Standard x 64

I tried to install Windows Server Standard edition 2012 x 64 who got burned on the delivery of download Microsoft Action Pack DVD.  Download of the ISO image is a file .img, site Web de Microsoft Action Pack.  I have downloaded several times and burned each image on a DVD.

When I try to install Windows Server 2012, after that select install, I get a pop-up message indicating, "a media computer driver needs is missing."  It could be a driver DVD, USB or HDD.  If you have a CD, DVD or USB flash drive with the driver on this subject, please insert it now. »

However, I don't know which driver it needs.  During my tests I initially wanted to install Windows Server 2012 on our VMware ESXi v5.1 environment, but got this error.  I then tried to install it on a physical server that I am able to install Windows Server 2008 x 64 and Windows 8 Pro on without no additional driver needed.  The system's hard drive is a standard IDE 120 GB drive and the DVD drive is an IDE drive as well.

I called Microsoft Action Pack support and they wanted me to pay for support to get this resolved, which I do not think that I would have to evaluate the software at this point.  They guarantee me that the download available for Action Pack Subscription holders is the necessary "correct".img file.

I also downloaded the eval FREE for Windows Server 2012 version, but not what I need for my tests.  This download version is a .iso file real vs file .img but won't install Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server Core Installation), (with a GUI server) or data center evaluation edition.  This version will install, but isn't what I need and is very limited in functionality.

Someone else has had problems like this with the Microsoft Action Pack Windows Server 2012 Standard multimedia software installation process and found a solution to this?

    THX.
