Use an ESX Server 3.0.2 VMDK file in VMWARE Fusion?

Is it possible to use copies of the virtual host systems, which already exist on our VMWARE ESX cluster in VMWARE Fusion software, I run on my APPLE MACBOOK PRO laptop? I use VMWARE Fusion, Version 3.0.2, and our ESX Server is on version 3.0.2.

Thanks in adnvance

Panos Tsapralis.

You can convert a VM ESX in Fusion using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone product.  The only downside is that you can only convert a Windows VM.  You can download the converter on the link below.

Hope that helps!

    Hello

Is there anyway that you can convert a twoGbMaxExtentFlat VMDK file in the type of VMFS.

Yes, use vmware converter or use vmkfstools, the format that you have is called 2gbsparse.

  • SQL Server 2005 Express Installation on Windows XP VMware Fusion (Mac)

    Hello

I tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express edition on Windows XP VMWare, the installation of the system-error, restart and get a bluescreen with a system error and it does this in a loop without end I tried twice (both with the installations of Windows XP) and both times he wandered outside with a blue system error screen.

I have no idea why it error. I chose the default configuration for the installation of vmware windows xp, 512 MB RAM and 40 GB of space. And my network setup is NAT.

If anyone has an idea about this, please give me some ideas.

    Thank you

I have just downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and had no problem installing Windows XP and I really don't see this as a matter of VMware Fusion although even if it was I'd go about troubleshooting it as if it were a physical Machine and would start by re-download SQL Server 2005 Express after compensation to any browser cache to make sure that the download was good.  Of course, on a clean at least build, to also have Windows Installer 3.1 and .NET Framework 2 installed first.

This is the name and the size with a MD5 checksum unofficial of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition I downloaded from the Download Details: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

  • Ways to convert VMDK files

    Hello

We recently had a server crash, and I decided to rebuild the server and put ESXi 4 on it.

However, backups, I have old machines are on disks formatted in NTFS (not USB, they are in our backup machine) which means that they are unable to be mounted (AFAIK) under ESXi.

The problem I have is that the VMDK files I have are the old version so not compatible with the curernt ESXi. I know I can convert them using vmkfstools (with i - pass memory) but I have two problems with this. First of all I have to bring to the ESXi server initially, and since we look at about 5 TB of data it will take FOREVER (been running for 2 days - even far complete) and the second is even if I get them on the server, I'll need another 5 TB of disk space to convert them to , which I did not.

    So my question (s)

1 - is really not in any case to mount a NTFS (not USB) under ESXi drive - like that I could simply convert from the backup to store data (and easy) drive

    2. is there a converter of the VMDK files offline?

    3. is there a way to change the NTFS drive into a format readable by ESXi (ext3/resierfs/something) without losing data

    4. is there a way to optimize network transfers maybe?

    5. is there another solution that I could look at

    Thanks in advance

Whoa Whoa Whoa, back up the truck.

You can use VMware Converter to do this and save yourself a TON of headaches.

First of all, what version of VMware did you use ALREADY in the VM host? VMware Server? VMware GSX? VMware ESX 3.5 - 2? VMware Workstation?

Second, do you have JUST the VMDK files? or are you support VMX files as well? If you do not the VMX, you have headaches on several levels. Converter needs the VMX file to know how many processors the virtual machine was, he had what hard drive controller, etc. to perform a proper conversion. If you do not have the VMX (and just the VMDK) files AND running ESX 3.x, you can redo the VMX file by doing a NEW VM on the ESXi 4.x server and attaching the VMDK file to it. You need these VMs as VM hardware version 4 (NOT 7), and 'best' guess as to what kind of equipment they had for the network card, card scsi, etc. This could put you in the right direction very fast and would be easy to test it on one of the smallest virtual machine if you had all tiny.

Thirdly, what you used to get backups of virtual machines before?

This might be easier to do offline, do not hesitate to email me at jonmkohler AT gmail DOT com and I would be happy to give you a hand with that. If not, put the answers here.

  • Copy only the vmdk file to create a backup

I'm totally new to VMware ESX 4, but decided to allows you to host a web server on Windows 2008 Server vm, after about two weeks of reading and the VMware ESX product testing. I have used other products virtual machine last year or so for other projects.

Why not just copy the vmdk files to create backup vms? That is problem? I have not to perform the clone at the same time as any other vm used to create or created from the vmdk file copied. I tested with a NT4 Workstation vm, because the files are small and can be copied and moved quickly, and I didn't have problems.

I use the Vsphere Client to copy the vmdk file to a folder at the root of the data store and then by creating a virtual machine, naming the vm the same as the folder.  I created a model of the virtual machine to w2008 use Vsphere standalone converter, but the vmdk copy is so much easier and faster that of re-run the converter again on the model should I need.

I created a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine and want to test before installing Tomcat and MySQL. The operating system should get messed up, I thought that I could start over with just using the current vmdk file, I copied. Yet I don't trust using snapshots, etc. I have also created many Linux VM on the ESX Server for analysis of the use of Tomcat on them. I also have a XP Pro VM as an alternative to emergency. It is XP Pro on a computer that hosts the web site of Tomcat/MySQL production - slowly.

    Thank you

    Homerun

Take a look at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 for a script that can automate Virtual Machine cloning. When you start a virtual machine that has been cloned ESXi will prompt you to "I copied it" or I moved it"etc. If it is a copy, you would respond with "I copied it" and ESXi change MAC, etc. of the UUID. The only required files are files VMDK and VMX file. Others will be re-created when the machine is added to the inventory.

In regards to the tools, I would install them. It also includes drivers to allow the host ESXi communicate with VM for things like the soft stop etc.

  • Where to 10 GB in size of VMDK files.

    Hello.

    SW: WmWare Workstation 7.1.4.

HW: Intel Core i7-920/6 GB of RAM/2x0.5Tb HARD drive. Host of OS = Windows 7 x 64 ultimate.

I have a virtual machine with the guest OS Windows Server 2003.

    When I run this VM I see inside - drive C: size = 39.8 GB space free = 30, 2 GB. So, space = 9.6 GB.

But when I stop VM I see - the VMDK file size is 19 GB!

The big question is - where did it take 10 GB 'extra '?

How can I adjust to its actual size? So I want VMDK take all the space, it is used in real-time under guest operating system.

Well, I'm ok if difference will be from 1 to 2 GB but 10 GB - it IS TOO! :-(

I tried to shrink the VMDK size:

    (1) ran Compact & Deframent for this VMDK file (in VmWare FRO this virtual machine).

    2) has added a new virtual HARD disk, start VM in the Acronis image ISO disc and then - created disk image of the HDD1, HDD2.

Then HDD1 deleted, added new HDD1 with the same size. Restore the system from the HDD2 to HDD1 disk image.

After all these manipulations I still have VMDK size = 19 GB!

Still can't understand - where does 10 GB 'extra '?

    Kind regards
    Dmitry.

I'll assume that you don't have any snapshots...

First of all, you need to use Shrink VMware Tools or instead using another method to zero free space on the disk for compacting.  In Virtual Machines Windows I use SDelete with the argument - c, then press stop, suspend not and the compact disc I think faster then using VMware Tools shrink.

  • Flat VMDK files after trying to delete files from data store

I tried to delete a VMDK file in a data store, because I thought that it was not in use, and I need space. I couldn't get the VM you are looking for the name of the VMDK file, so I thought that the VM has disappeared. Turns out that someone had renamed the virtual machine, when it was actually being used, so I could not remove the VMDK file.

I searched for the files with Powershell in a data store, and that's how I found this mysterious file in the first place.

After giving me the error that it couldn't be deleted, the file does not appear in the search more and the name of the file has been replaced by *-dish. VMDK, I think, and the column by specifying the Type just said file, instead of virtual disk. In addition, files not included in the research more.

Today, a day after, everything is back to normal. Everyone knows this behavior before and could tell me what happened?

Each virtual disk is actually 2 files: VMname.vmdk and VMname - flat hard

Unfortunately, the data store browser displays only the VMname... VMDK, but it gives the properties of VMname - flat hard. Use PuTTY, connect to the ESXi host via ssh, navigate to the folder of the virtual machine and use: the - lahtr to list the contents of an authoritarian way. You can also run: - ch to check actual use.

  • USB key contains VMX and VMDK files, I import them to an ESX Server 3.5

I use VMware Workstation to use these virtual machines, but now I would add these virtual machines from one ESX Server. Each virtual machine is in its own directory on the USB drive and each folder contains files etc, vmxf, vmx, vmdk. What is the best way to get these on a server ESX from external USB drive?

Or install the stand alone vConverter. It's free and it's the part of the VC you would use anyway. So I just install the vConverter and import your virtual machines to do. After they are imported, you'll need to register virtual machines.

  • How is upgrade from Standard to Enterprise Version - difficult to migrate vm to ESX server for Central storage for use with VMotion

    Hi all

We plan to upgrade our current system. We have 1 ESX Server with Standard operating system. Adding 2 more ESX Server with Enterprise edition and upgrading of our current business. We have about 15 VM on our current ESX Server. The migration process is difficult to move the virtual machines in storage Central for use with VMotion. I intend to take the ESX 3.5 Fast track class before you start the upgrade. I am trying to plan a project planned for the time to migrate these courses.

    Any guidance would be great.

Here is a link to the plugin - http://sourceforge.net/projects/vip-svmotion/

The amount of time it will take to migrate the virtual machine online all depends on the size of the drive, the configuration of storage etc.

  • VMDK file unreadable after migration of VM & update of the ESX Server

Last night we have updated the ESX servers here and in the migration process machines from one node to the other (by placing a single node of the cluster in maintenance mode). During this migration, the VMs one has stopped running. When we finished the migration and had updated the ESX Server, we brought the system to the top and tried to start this virtual machine.

First, we looked in the directory of the virtual machine and saw that the VMDK file has a different name, with - dish at the end (before hard). We have renamed the file, removing the - flat extension, and this is where we saw these messages. ESX Server always gbehaved as if the file did not exist or was unreadable.
