Using Lightroom on two computers

Here's my situation.  I have an iMac that is now my main computer for LR workflow.  Preview catalog and the catalog to sit on the hard drive of my iMac.  I have a MacBook Pro that I want to use on a trip.  I just want to shoot a project, import pictures on my laptop and change them in LR.  When I return to my iMac, I want to be able to move the original images and any changes on my main hard drive.

I tried to move my lrcat and lrdata to a dropbox folder and point my LR iMac than... things catalogue is painfully slow. I was not even trying to open things up on my macbook.  I do not use a hard drive on a trip because my iMac in my office is connected to 16TB and tb 20 disks RAID 5, where all my images to sit.

What is the best option here?

You would export the work that you did on your MacBook to a catalogue on the external hard drive. Then you would move this external hard drive to your iMac. You would open the normal catalog that you always use and then choose Import from the catalog that is located on the external hard drive on the iMac. That would merge the work that you did on your MacBook with the catalog on your iMac, and everything should be consolidated in a catalog.

  • What the your work flow using Lightroom on two computers?

I realize similar questions have already been asked, but after much research, I gave up on the dream of seamlessly sync between my laptop and desktop computer facilities (and catalogues) in Lightroom.

I thought that Lightroom Mobile hold the answer, but this can only sync with a catalogue and a mobile device. Then I tried to open the same catalog (which resides on an external drive) on both computers, but my laptop is connected via a network. It seems that an opening on a network catalog is not allowed? This leaves export and import of catalogs, but to be honest, it's a little a rigmarole.

So, I find myself with my office and the catalogue of my collection of photos (which works fine). That just leaves me with my laptop, which is frankly a bit redundant.

I'm curious to know how other people work with two computers... two catalogs and never the two are irreconcilable? Or export catalogs between devices permanently? Or something else?

    Hi Froodster,

We do not recommend our user to upgrade their catalog on the network drives, because you could faces challenges to access and update.

If your images can reside on the network drive, but the catalog must be on a local drive on the computer or any external drive.

  • How can I use lightroom on two computers?

Currently, I use Lightroom on my desktop computer. Sometimes it is really hard for me to get edition because I'm often not home. How can I install and synchronize my account of lightroom for my computer desktop and laptop? My desktop is a pc and my laptop is a Mac.

    Hi brittbritt92,

The simplest solution is to put the catalog on the external hard drive, and then you can easily connect and use from each machine.  There are alternatives, including using import and export to and from the catalog, but they then ask you to keep track of who you use last.

Assuming that you are talking about 6 Lightroom Lightroom CC (which version are you talking about?), you must use the Cloud on Sign Out creative application on a computer before you can install it on another computer.

  • Using lightroom on multiple computers on $9.99 plan...

Hi, I have creative cloud put in place on my laptop (plan of $9.99) and also want to have lightroom installed on my office, what is the process to do this, or what I need to upgrade the plan to use on multiple computers, need help sooner rather than later it please, thanks

    Hi Mitchell,

You can install applications of CC and activate on two computers, just follow the same process you used to set up your laptop and log in with your Adobe ID

Note that installing and running that LR on your desktop doesn't automatically give you access to the photos on your laptop. If your intention is to share your catalog, reply back - this is a more advanced topic, but I can give you some advice if necessary.

  • Using Lightroom on two PCs

I want to start using Lightroom.   I have 2 PCs in different locations.I'll be able to store my pictures / Lightroom edition of metadata on an external drive and rotation between the two computers?

    Hello

Yes, but you will need to keep the catalog and the original image on the external hard drive.

Catalog Lightroom stores information about what the pictures that you have imported into Lightroom and what changes did you on the images, tags, keywords etc.

By default, the catalog is saved in the pictures folder of the computer inside the Lightroom folder.

    Thank you

  • Is it possible to use Lightroom with several computers that are not networked?

I'm new to Lightroom, even though I am a professional photographer for over 15 years. Currently, I use the software that came with my camera to process my RAW files, Professional Digital Canon's Pro for a 5 d Mark II.

I've been evaluating the lasest version of Lightroom to consider buying it. So far, I like the capacity expanded to setting the image and improvements. However, in my current workflow, I need to be able to save the settings to be able to transfer the files to another computer. Is this possible with Lightroom? With Digital Pro, I can edit a RAW file and it will save the adjustments any computer, I opened the image file on. I have to be able to replicate this process in order to convey to our production department how I want an adjusted and cropped image.

I downloaded the version track on two computers, then the images imported into Lightroom. Adjustments made, then copied the images to a flash drive. Images downloaded from the flash drive to my computer laptop, then re-imported the images in Lightroom and adjustments were not saved.

    Thanks for any help.

After some research, my answer lies in the XMP file. Whenever I make changes to the image, I can save my settings by creating an XMP (CTRL S) file. He rewrote it in the original image folder so when I burn the file by hand to my production team, the xmp files parleyed my settings of the image. In turn, they can make adjustments and send them to me, if necessary. Just took some time to find the information, because even if I am kicking of tires on LR4, it was a video LR1 who gave me the information.

  • Use Lightroom on multiple computers with the same images

When you use lightroom on my PC I have download the images on an external hard drive.  When I'm away from home can I use lightroom on my laptop and down load the images on the same external hard drive and treat and have lightroom on PC locate them when I go home.

Yes.  If you go regularly to several machines, the simplest solution is to put the catalog on the external hard drive file, just open this same catalog on both machines.  The alternative is to use the import of the catalog when you return to your main computer to copy holiday photo settings in your main catalog.

  • CC of Lightroom on two computers different access to same pictures?

Hello.  I paid for and prepare creative cloud and Lightroom CC on my computer at home and imported about 4 000 photos in my first catalog.  Now I would like to have access to these pictures on my work computer.  I have installed cloud creative and open Lightroom CC on my work computer, but I don't know how to access these catalogued photos.  I don't know if it's important, but on my computer at home, on the active tab of the creative cloud, it shows 100% used (2GB 2 GB).  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you

Your best bet is to put the catalog on an external HD file, and then move the external hard drive to another computer.

If it is too heavy, some people have used DropBox to make it work, but it becomes difficult and if you screw up, you could end up with a useless catalog file. Please search the forums for more details on this.

Probably a dumb question but if I download lightroom on a second computer, this does not affect the first catalog of t - he?

    Thank you very much

    Hi MissGatt,

No, it does affect the first catalogue at all, because you use it on any other computer.
