Using Windows Vista, check updates keeps "checking."

I use Windows Vista Home Premium for 5 years and have had no problems with Windows update. Recently, the Windows Update service asks me to "Check for updates". I clik the button, but it keeps searching for updates FRO hours with no update suggested or downloaded. If I don't update Windows update, my CPU usage at 100% heads and I can't run some programs. If anyone can help?
