Utility disk Vs actuals

My says disk utility I have 180 GB of video, but when I click on the folder of films where I store all my videos, he says only 100 GB and I can not find where this other 80 GB could be hiding.

Any suggestions please?

In my utility disc and case on this subject says Mac storage I have photos of 2.15 GB, although I do not have such amount of photos.

There is an incorrect margin of error or something or Desktop pictures.

Not sure about the video, 80 GB is too big to hide inside the system. Screen savers are not video?

What I say your about this Mac store said on video?

  • Utility disk and MS DOS

One of my friends asked me to try to format a 8 TB new drive he bought. He needs to FAT32 for his playstation and I think it is either running leopard or snow leopard. I've got El capitan.

    What he did:

Initially the ability to format with MS-DOS was dimmed, he partitioned the drive into partitions of 7.9 TB and 0.1 and the ability to format to MS DOS became available, he went ahead and disk utility reported that have successfully completed. I suspect that he does not check readers reported sizes in the finder at this stage, but when he turned on his PC that reported the largest partition 1.68 TB.

It has reconnected to the Mac and re-partioned into partitions of 2 x 4TB with much the same result.

    What I did:

When I plugged the drive, Get info reported volumes 2 x 1.8 TB but made each utility disk volume count volumes of 2 x 4TB with 2.2 TB of space in use. I then wiped the drive and created a 8TB Mac OS volume that has been reported correctly in the finder and in disk utility. The ability to format in the MS-DOS was available on my Mac even if it was divided into a single volume of 8 TB, I am gone ahead and utility disk has reported formatting was successful but get info reported a single figure of 1.8 to.

I tried since a 7.8/divided 0.2 TB and ended with only a volume of 1.2 to get info and 6.6 TB of space used of the CT 7.8 according to disk utility.

The thing is every book that I try again with MS DOS I seem to get a smaller usable volume.

I'm not familiar with the help of MS-DOS formatted, but we had problems when it restructured a 2 GB usb key that we sometimes in the past, although I suspect that he reformatted his PC. So I don't know if there is a problem with a 8 TB disk, disk utility or even its PC.

FWIW, Microsoft has imposed a limit of 32 GB for FAT/FAT32 partitions, but it is possible to create partitions of 2 TB. I suspect that's what you see.

You should be able to create 4 partitions of 2 TB ExFAT.

Additional information: I didn't have any problems with this disk volume. I use it only as a Time Machine backup destination. It is an encrypted volume OS X Extended (respect for case-sensitive). My concern involves only disk utility complaint that its "first aid process has failed."

After reading the complaints in other forums that utility disk on El Capitan has been "dumbed down" and can not perform many of the functions that the utility of the same name used to be able to perform in previous versions of Mac OS (complaints, I can't confirm because I'm relatively new to MacOS - although extremely in computing with Windows, UNIX and Linux) (, so I didn't get to use disk utility a lot, before El Capitan), I decided to do the same "check the volume" that I knew first aid was trying to perform with the diskutil command-line app.  Guess what? No error!:

    Thank you!

I think you might be able to do a repair of first aid, after you have disassembled the drive first:

    1. Run OS X by an external device (ex: USB mode, or external hard drive or disk target from another Mac)
    2. Launch the Terminal and run the following command umount f /Volumes/ (ex: umount f/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD)
    3. Then run disk utility first aid.

I had this problem on a Macbook Air, I tried to recreate the image to work, so I didn't need to get anything off the drive. I tried to format the drive and reinstall OS X. So I don't know if first aid work after disassembly, but it worked without a doubt after that I did the first two steps above and then deleted from the disk. Not sure if this will help, but worth a try, I guess.

  • Utility disk partition problem

Problems using the disk utility to change a Partition. My external hard drive is only 1 TB and divided into 3 partitions as shown below. Because more space is needed for the active partition, SuperDuper, thought that I propose 20 additional GB in it from an inactive partition - the 'old' which is gray below G5.

But when I open the disk utility and selected "Old LaCie G5", the Partition tab was greyed (although before I had restarted). So thought I would go first aid on "Old LaCie G5" but I illustrated window, the rotation for a while beach ball, zipper then as indicated.

Well, I need a new, more large drive hard, but was hoping to fix things in this way until I get one. Is this possible? And what to do about first aid/old G5?

I read on the forum on the recovery disk creator and I'm a bit confused... in the name, it becomes obvious that he is indeed a creator, but I have no thread caught my attention which in fact is to create a recovery disk. How does it work? Of course, it is used to restore the system to the default settings, but you can make your own backup copies recovery of the State, the system is now? Hello

So many questions! I'll try to help you with unclear words.

In the latest Toshiba has delivered laptop computers equipped with recovery media. Very old computers laptop Toshiba created mainly two CD recovery and newer laptops a Recovery DVD.
This recovery DVD was in the box with the notebook.

This recovery CD/DVD contains a recovery image. Recovery image can be installed on the laptop and after that each installation of the laptop will have factory settings the same state that you have when you start your laptop for the first time.
Recovery image contains the system operations, drivers, Toshiba and utility tools and some additional software. Therefore, after you install the recovery image, you should not install drivers or additional software. Everything is done for you.

Then, new notebooks, as your Satellite Pro A300-1EA, are not delivered with a separate recovery media and all those who buy the laptop must / should create a clean copy. This copy can be used for installations of operating system further. For recovery, multimedia creation Toshiba has designed special tool and it is designed to create recovery media ONLY.

To start the tool, select the media you want to use (I recommend DVD - R), put the media in the optical disc drive and click Create.

In fact the recovery image is saved on the HARD drive and placed on the second partition in the file called HDDRecovery.
Still, there is one thing. If nothing is changed on the system, partitions, and if this folder is not removed, you can install operating system whenever you want, but without using recovery media.

It is simply procedure. When the laptop starts press F8 and you will enter the advanced startup options. The first is called to fix my computer. Enter it and follow the on-screen menu. After two stages, you will see the window with several options and the last recovery option.

So please create DVD to be on the right side of recovery.

If you have any other questions please ask. Someone here will help you for sure.

    Good luck!

  • Utility disk in El Capitan will not create a partition on an SDXC card

Hi, I want to create two partitions on a map of Micro SDXC 64 GB. However, when you run the disk utility in El Capitan, the "score" button is grayed out out and not clickable.

Anyone know why this is happening? Or know a work-around? The card is for Raspberry Pi my son, who needs a 'boot' partition and partition "recovery" (in FAT format). I deleted the map using disk utility, but the "score" button remains unavailable.

  • Utility disk and moving Qosmio X 500 record low space drice C

This can be a pretty long post because I try to explain my problem... Please forgive.

I got my X 500 over three months now.
It took a little while before only the awake folder migration utility I didn't know that it is there after I had done a limited copy of the records in front of my old Qosmio F20. After he woke up and I was able to transfer files/folders through it allows plenty of room for the "tiny" - I feel, 60 GB SSD C drive.

I get a message to come sometimes, when I boot, the file migration utility has a setting for me. If I open the utility it shows no file in the 'C' drive area and already transferred files [first use it] in the side right for him had ' drive. Text at the bottom of the utility said something like "If you have done some manual transfers, so it cannot do anything"... something in the lines - sorry for not being clear on this.

I recently installed other programs and tried every time to do an install custom files [x 86] on the D drive in the program folder. However, drive C is now showing a to 5.58 59.2 GB disk space.

Check copies of records? I thought that for the programs I have installed I find a lot of folders/files in these folders, so take plenty of program.

What is the best way to free up space on the drive "C" Please?

I have to manually copy the data contained in the files [not only a 'name'... IE; [AVID... folder but perhaps also in drive C program files (x 86) folder] to the same name of folders on drive D?

If I did, the programs would work properly or there are problems in the program being located?

When the utility first activated [se] I thought ' great... transfer of all data from my old X 500 will be easy ', but it doesn't seem to be the case. I expect that any new program installed would be are automatically copied into drive D. I'm a bit paranoid about insufficient space on the C drive.

    Help would be appreciated.

To be honest I don t understand why you use any file migration utility only to copy the data from one HARD drive to another.

In my opinion, you simply copy the data to another partition. If you need different folders, then you can create it manually.

So, I recommend always using the C partition for system only! The D partition can be used for other data like pictures, movies, MP3s, PDFs etc.

    > What is the best way to free up space on the drive "C" Please?
Well, transfer the data from C to D, but note; You cannot move installed programs.
This means that if you install an application on C and if you move this to D then this software is not works.
In this case, you need to install once again on D.

  • Can not start up and the utility disk first aid failed

I have an iMac 27 "retina 5K (end of 2015) El Capitan (10.11.2) and 10 Windows via Bootcamp.   This morning when I had finished work on the Windows of the machine side, I tried to start in El Capitan, but it failed silently and turned off the machine itself about the 2 minute point.  I tried new and same problem.  So I checked if I could go back to Windows and ran 10 Windows without problem.  Then I started in the Mac recovery partition to run disk utility and it revealed a considerable number of errors on the Macintosh partition such as:

-Previous ID in a string of hard link is incorrect (ID =-1130612101)

(it should be 3164355194 instead of 0)

Several of the above errors appeared with different numbers

-Volume bitmap minor meds of repair for orphans blocks

-County of block free invalid volume

    -Volume header needs minor repairs

-Lack of notice of thread (id =-1130634630)

Several of the above errors appeared with different numbers

Finally the process 'done' with the 'first aid process has failed.  If possible to backup the data on this volume.

Then I started in an installed USB version of the El Capitan, and while it was successful, he launched a warning when he mounted the volume that I had the problem with: "OS X cannot repair the disk"Macintosh HD"" but I was able to copy the files from this volume and even run applications that have been stored on it.  Tried to run disk utility and first aid in vain as above.

    So here are the questions.

1 should I guess that nothing can do otherwise erase that partition and reinstall El Capitan?

2 delete the partition and reinstalled El Capitan will affect my Bootcamp partition or the ability to use Win 10?

    3. I have a Time Machine backup. restore it re - will present the same problem?

    4. I have never had such a massive and unrecoverable failure on a Mac drive and I had used it the day before without problem.  Should I assume that the drive itself is defective and have it replaced?  I ran an Apple Hardware Test and were not problems.

    1 fix
