VCA mode in settings of the cluster

I was wondering what an experience everyone was with the VCA mode settings.  Usually allow you it?  What mode for processors Intel you choose usually?

the only time you need to activate the VCA is when you have vMotion compatibility issues.  And when allowing it, CVS will choose what mode is the best

    Hello

    I have the following configuration:

    • Existing Cluster_A with ESX 3 hosts running on the processor Intel Xeon E5540 (Nahelem)
    • 30 VM runs in a production environment
    • 2 new ESX hosts running on the processor Intel Xeon E5649 (Westmere)

2 new guests are not added in vCenter again, but the goal is to allow the addition of these 2 new hosts in Cluster_A.

I understand that, in order to have all 5 hosts in the same cluster, EVC mode must be activated with the highest level being "Nahelem" (lowest common denominator).

From a theoretical point of view, masking any CPU to apply will be identical to the current CPU presented the virtual running machines, settings allowing CVS using the same architecture CPU should not cause conflict or problem.

Therefore, I would ask you confimation that activation VCA and Nahelem for Cluster_A upgrade will not cause downtime or impact (e.g. BSOD) to the virtual machines.

    Thank you

    Hello

Is 100% safe operation (done many, many times the performance of clusters). No side effects :-)

    1. create a TEST VM
    2. Add the new server ESX to vCenter
    3. put in maintenace mode
    4. Add to the cluster
    5. allow to LCA
    6. exit maintenance ESX
    7. try to vMotion between the old and the new node in a cluster
    8. If vMotion won't work, says André, you should turn off the virtual machine and run it.
  • Problems with the VCA mode when moving to Vcentre 4.1

    Hi all

I currently have three ESXi 4.0 update 3 host running in a cluster. Two servers are identical and the third a later generation of CPU. The cluster is running in mode VCA Intel i7 with success.

Also, my server Vcentre is 4.0 update 3 running on a 32-bit Windows Server 2003 R2.

I built a new server on Windows Server 2008 R2 Vcentre and I am running Vcentre 4.1 update 1.

I did the exercise to my old server Vcentre guests to my new. No problem until I try and their cluster. My server with the latest CPU is not allowed admission to the cluster. The new cluster is running same EVC mode as the old cluster.

Need to update 4.1 Vcentre 1 be backward compatible for EVC modes with respect to the material?

The servers are all DELL R710, the old two servers running XEON X 5570 processors and the latest Intel XEON X 5670 processors host tracks

Do I have to update all 3 hosts 4.1 before I can redefine the clusters in EVC mode?

Hoping that someone has been through a similar experience and can advise you. Unfortunately, I do not have a test lab to run it on.

    See you soon. Mark

I don' t think you need to upgrade to ESX host.

I think try in the following order:

    (1) turn on VCA for cluster

    (2) add the latest processor, select baseline and then old processor server.

  • Activate the VCA Mode of VMware vCenter Server Appliance

    Hello

I'm pretty new on vSphere.  I have two hosts running esxi 5.1 what one of these hosts running the "VMware vCenter Server Appliance' with vSphere version 5.5.  I currently have a single cluster containing all the VMS as well hosts and the SAN.

I try to activate the EVC mode, but when I try it tells me that the host is not allowed because there are powered on virtual machines.  I can turn off all the virtual machines except the vCenter device and I still get the problem on the host that has the device on it.  If I turn off the unit, I can't use vSphere to activate CVS.

How can I activate CVS when vSphere does not work?

    Thank you

    Jeff

    Hi Welcome to the communities,

This one is a bit complicated

    You have:

    1. turn off all VMs on Host1 (while vCenter device is on Host2)

2 bring Host1 on Cluster, select CVS clustered.

    3. put all the virtual machines on Host2 (also vCenter device)

    4. connect on Host2 directly to vSphere Client Windows

    5. remove the vCenter inventory unit

    6. connect on Host1 directly to vSphere Client Windows

    7. the data store when the appliance and add it to the inventory of research. Power on

    8. connect the device with Web client or vSphere vCenter

    9. move the second host in the cluster

    And you're done

Can join a Cluster of storage disk out of Maintenance DTS Mode to set up the profiles for a virtual machine storage policies?...

IE can you define the rules of affinity DTS depending on how the rules of storage of profiles are configured for a virtual machine?

In my mind it seems there is disconnect from the DTS and storage profiles.

    Thank you.

    = NOTE =.

My lab at home, 2 organizes running ESXi 5.0

    Dv01 has

    Of startup vmfs 7200 RPM 160 G = dv01-BOOT

    Vmfs 1 TB 7200 RPM = VM02-VMFS

    VM02 has

    Of startup vmfs 7200 RPM 160 G = VM02-BOOT

    Vmfs 1 TB 7200 RPM = VM02-VMFS

    Vmfs 5900 RPM 2 TB = VM02-TV01

I have (3) facility profiles of storage using 'User-defined storage Capablity' as shown below:

    (160 @ 7200 RPM SATA) boot > Boot

    Fast (160 7200 RPM SATA and 1 TB @ 7200 RPM SATA) > fast

    Slow (2 TB @ 5900 RPM SATA) > slow

Then, I set up a storage Cluster with my local disks on dv01 (only to date)

LocalVM disc dv01-BOOT and dv01-VMFS disk of the 'cluster of storage.

I have a computer virtual called DC01 (HardDisk1) want to live on 'Boot' profile storage drive
His "Non-compliant" poster according to the storage profile, it should run on drive 'boot' on dv01

To get to this point, I put the StorageCluster in Mode of Maintenace 'DTS' and forced a sVmotion of all virtual machines off dv01-BOOT

No disks are IO or claim of space.

But once I take the 'DTS Maintenacne mode' STARTUP dv01 floppy is now get the DTS to return him to satisfy the storage profile (rule) I install... IE do the 'storage profile' VM complient (without doing a few externall API, the PS script or the 3rd party software calls)... ??

Seems weird it is (or may be) such disconnection of a memory of the profiles and the StorageClusters and the DTS?

    Thank you...

At this point, I think that storage DRS and storage profiles are two technologies to separate and work independently, but what you suggest is a great idea-

  • Change the settings of the HA cluster does not?

Hello. Strange behaviour in my configuration of HA.

I got set up with a failover server HA. Now I have to change this configuration, I get an OK message on the paper, but I still see Configuring failover on the summary of the cluster tab.

If I got to the cluster parameters, it of OK, but is always in the summary the old configuration tab.

I also have a warning saying that do not have a network of redundant management host. OK, solve this problem, but the message is still there...

Should I disable - enable the HA to apply these settings? Or it may be a problem of vcenter service?

    Thanks for your help.

    Best regards

You can try disabling/enabling the AP on the cluster?

If this does not resolve the problem, I recommend to restart the virtual center.

  • VCA Mode change

    Hello
I'm downgrading to Westmere EVC mode to conform to the old generation of host we add to the cluster.

To do this, I currently have two clusters created, in production and two hosts using sandybridge.

the second group has a central server inside and westmere generation.

I am aware of the procedure found here:VMware KB: VCA allowing on a cluster when vCenter Server is running in a virtual machine

My question is, rather than quick vMotioning of all hosts another machines.  is it possible to close all virtual machines on a host, set mode now, disconnect the host, move it to the cluster Westmere allow it and then put on all virtual machines?

I know that I'll still have to disconnect and reconnect my vcenter server, but I would like to avoid having a large amount of machines to vmotion if I can find some downtime to stop all.  and make them move with the host.

    This idea is possible?

So if I understand what you really want is the future VMs with the host computer, then when you add the host to the new cluster and power them they will run under the new EVC Mode but you essentially in bulk installs what you wanted?

If so, I did what you describe a bunch of times before (especially during migration between vCenters and want to go to the host and all virtual machines), what I would recommend however keeps the VMs powered on. Disconnect the host and then remove the vcenter. Once removed from the cluster and vCenter connect through thick client and put all virtual machines. Then add it to vCenter, in the cluster you want to and feed the VMS and you would be actually resigned these VMs in bulk.

Conversely, you can turn off the virtual machines and keep track of those you want to migrate, put the host in maintenance mode and move it to the cluster that you want and then get out of maintenance mode, cold migrates virtual machines and then turn on. I think that this option will be a little easier.

However, to disconnect a host and removing vcenter will make virtual machines with it, that looks like what you want to do...

  • VCA mode disabled / vmotion work?

We have 2 groups of ESXi at our facility for vSphere, vSphere is version build 5.5U1, currently most recent available.

Group 1 has Intel Xeon E7540 UC.

Group 2 is brand new and uses recently published processors Intel Xeon E7-4860 v2.

VCA is currently disabled on the two groups.

Athe's systems are listed in the VMware compatibility guide for our latest version of vSphere.

I expect this Setup to be able to live vMotion of virtual machines from the old to the new cluster without the use of CVS on either, but I assumed that the migration back to group 1 would require cluster 2 to affect the level of reference Intel EVC appropriate (Nehalem in this case).

It turns out that I am able to migrate VM direct in both directions with no apparent problems (so far), with EVC mode disabled on both groups.

Is an expected behavior or if ESXi/vCenter is somehow misreading? CPU compatibility (perhaps because the E7-4860v2 are a very recent model) or some other issue that could lead to problems with these migrations?

This is normal unless you have turned to bike the VM on the new hosts.

If a virtual machine has been powered - on on a former host and is migrated to the new cluster, it does not change the current features of the virtual machine CPU runlevel. He will continue to work with the old CPU features on the new host and is therefore able to migrate the old new host without problems, or additional AIDS such as CVS.

However, if stop you now migrated virtual machine and power it on again on new hosts, the virtual material will apply the new host CPU capabilities (or the level of EVC of cluster, but you do not apply any) and you will not be able to migrate the computer virtual return to the armies of the former cluster.

This and the search of these forums has gotten me to the point where I think I need to use the DVD of recovery in "EXPERT" mode This should allow me to set the partitions manually rather than automatically right in the Middle!

I noticed that the screen asking me what to install has a SETTINGS option that is always grayed out.

Does anyone know how to open the SETTINGS screen, or if there is another way to create the partitions manually?

    Thanks for any response.

    Hello

I have already replied to the other thread (see the link in your message)

The point is that you cannot resize partitions using the Vista Toshiba Recovery DVD.

Mentioned Expert mode is not available in the Vista recovery DVDs.
The expert mode is part of the Win XP Recovery CD.

However, the fact is that the Vista recovery DVDs sets the laptop to factory settings and also the size of the partition.

The sizes of the partitions can be modified in the Vista Disk Manager!

Yes, I will link two routers with an ethernet cable, which is a set up access point would be in Bridge Mode. Never realized that until you said it.

  • move the cluster for sub vi

    Hello

I want to spend a cluster that can change its content to one under VI. The cluster does not change by program, but during programming, that is, I could add or remove items in the / cluster. Using direct wire or local variables I would have to change each sub VI that uses the cluster updated the. I also tried the typedefs, but I met the same problem.

At the same time the Subvi should be able to update the cluster I spent.

In C++, I use classes like struct (equivalent to the cluster of LV) and pass a pointer to a class object to a function. Within the function, I choose the members of the class I want to use inside this function. If I change the class structure, the functions of the Word are not affected (of couse only as long that I remove irrelevant of class members of the called function).

    Example (from C++):

settings * param;  'settings' is a class that I use to group variables

    doSomethingUseful (param);

/ * the doSomethingUseful function uses the pointer to parameter and accesses the members of

    Param-> variable1

    Param-> variable2

    ...

Hereby, I can change the values of variables stored in the param object

  • You try to run the scan mode and mode interface fpga at the same time is causing errors

I'm reading a 9236 9237 and a 9215 with the scanning engine and read from two 9211 modules with the fpga. It's because I need to acquire to 200 Hz with the 9236 9237 9215 but maximum rate of the scan engine is limited by the slower module in the system, which in this case is the max of 15 hz the 9211.

So to use both interfaces (scan engine and fpga), I followed the percisely given in this article for instructions.

    1. the project has created and added the peripheral crio using the interface of the scan engine.

The data returned by the interface fpga was nothing else than zeros on all channels, even if thermocouples were hooked on some of them. (all zeros as entries in the convert temperature vi gives-410, 6160 degrees F, if you happen to have the material to try this.)

I get the following error from the open fpga vi reference:

    2. Add the target fpga and drag and drop the 9211 inside modules

    3. has created the fpga in interface file with and compiled with no error.

    4. interfaced with the file fpga at almost exactly the way the sample project of "getting started with 9211' by using the engine of analysis in the interface with the other modules.

    5. after the errors to discover that I created a VI that tests for just the portion 9211 code (called "thermocouple FPGA method Test.vi")

You can try making sure that the chassis is set to mode Interface FPGA and the setting is deployed.  I wrote that article that you referenced says will select the deploy option later and not explicitly speak to deploy the chassis later.  Run a VI with a reference open FPGA vi not automatically deploy chassis settings if you need to do it explicitly.  Try the following steps.

    1. right click on the frame element and select Properties.  Make sure that the Interface FPGA option button is selected. \

    2. right click on the frame element and select deploy.

    3. repeat your VI.

The data returned by the interface fpga was nothing else than zeros on all channels, even if thermocouples were hooked on some of them. (all zeros as entries in the convert temperature vi gives-410, 6160 degrees F, if you happen to have the material to try this.)

I get the following error from the open fpga vi reference:

    code error-61141

    "Thermocouple method Test.vi FPGA.
    Activities FPGA:

    Open FPGA interface reference.
Reserved for LabVIEW FPGA outside: The RIO Scan Interface is running. You must set the mode Interface FPGA chassis in order to unlock the FPGA. »

The likely cause of this error is that the setting of the FPGA Interface on the chassis has not been deployed.  If the chassis is still Mode Scan fixed personality bitfile will be loaded on startup and the FPGA will be locked.

It's extremely frustrating, because as I explained, I've been very attentive not only follow the instructions for concurrent fpga and analysis but also to model my VI by the example of VI, even if only for the moment, just to try to work things out.

I'm sorry that you have had difficulties.  Assuming that I'm wrong about the source of your problem, it seems we have to update less than Ko to include the deployment step.

Any help would be appreciated as I need to fix this for the further development and I am somehow in a lack of time. I opened a support ticket (reference #7256226), but the app engineer had no time to answer.

    My system:

cRIO-9014 controller RT with crio-9104 bottom of basket.

    LabVIEW 2009

Latest drivers and peripheral software pc and rio (RIO scan 3.2 engine support june2009)
