VCB with Netbackup

Hi all

I'm new in the Vmware environment. We must safeguard the ESX Server via VCB method, and we have no Netbackup license for this.

But after reading one of the forum thread, I came to know that we can do as a flat file backup VCB backup after the vcbmounter takes the snapshot of the virtual machine and the copy in the proxy server. I guess that bpstart_notify and bpend_notify batch consists in this.

But iam not able to find the document useful or walking by seven procedure for installation and configuration of this method.

Please provide the document or the step by step procedure to set up this method. Do not know how to configure scripts/batch vcbmounter and bpstart_notify and bpend_notify files.

I'm really help less. Please help me.

I had a session on this topic at VMworld 2008. Unable to find the link for the session at the present time, but watch the guide I created. It will also-> help

Just curious to know if anyone out there using VCB with NetApp in FC, and that their configuration is on the proxy side.

Yes I have clients who use this. They have no special configuration. Just a host of regular proxy with a unique link to the NetApp and the other to the destination (fc storage area) cheap

  • VCB with NTBackup

    Hello

I configured VCB with NTBackup. I am backing up a Windows system to a particular folder. However, the backup runs without error. But it's not not all backup files. If I select the whole disc C, all backups. Looks like he can't back up a particular folder. Is there anyway to backup a specified folder?

Also, I tried to write (paste) files in the mounted virtual disk drive.  It shows that copied. But appear virtual machines. Is this transcribed only mounted virtual disk?

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the late reply, must be in time zones or work you long hours

VMCLEAN. BAT is a batch file that is useful instead of disassemble each snapshot that individually, you can use this batch file to remove all your VCB shots in a go.

I use a pre script that up my VM 30 individually then execute my backup program (I use Arcserve on NT backup) and then after the VCB backup I have call clean wich script automatically dismounts all VCB snapshots in a go.

If you do not have to specify each virtual computer.

Quick note on VCB and BackupNT - you can do differential or incremental backups as the mounted directory is read-only and BackupNT can not set the bit to archive.

for VCBCLEAN work, you must edit the config.js file in consequence of folder/config.

P.S. I used Server 2003 to test the NTBackup (should have mentioned that and saved, you some time)

    I hope this helps.

    See you soon,.

  • Restore virtual machines with Netbackup and VCB

I just Netbackup 6.5.2 and using VCB 1.5.  When I create my backups, it makes the .img files.  When I try to restore using Netbackup, it won't recognize backups from windows NT and not Flash.  And VM converter does not recognize the .img files.  So, how can I restore, what am I am I doing wrong?

Hello.  The NetBackup .img files are not accessible directly.  They are used internally by NetBackup.

When the only restore files vmdk (virtual machine complete), NetBackup 6.5.2 supports two types of restorations.  First of all, you can automatically perform a restore of the entire virtual machine by using the free VMware Converter component.  The second method involves all first restore VMware vmdk and then manually by your restoration.

These processes are described in the document of NetBackup 6.5.2 update which can be found here:

  • EBS with NetBackup backup

    Hi experts

I'm new to EBS, please I need help with this:

I need to back up three servers EBS (Dev, Test, Prod), I ve installed Netbackup on these servers.

But I do not know what files or directories should I back up?

Also I don't know if I should stop the application first?

What information should I give you lets see what configuration I have on these servers?

    DB 11 G 2

    EBS 12.1.3

    Thanks in advance

    JUDGE

He has suggested you stop the application services layer before performing a backup. I can't talk about the latest features of NETBACKUP since I the have not used recently, but what I was doing before taking a backup offline demand full or level nodes then take incremental backups (on a Linux/Unix OS) online. If there are major changes to the application level (patching, upgrades... etc) you should take a full backup before proceeding with a task.

What I would say to validate online apps backup is:

-Run preclone on one of the instances of DEV

-Take an online backup, the nodes of level application (s)

-Make a backup of the database level one or more nodes

-Restore the backup on one or several different nodes or about to different editing on the same server

-Run postclone on the restored files

-Validate your backup by accessing the application/database target

    Thank you

  • VCB with 4.1 vsphere / esx 4.1

    Hello

I remember there was an announcement saying that vcb wont´t be supported more with the new generation of vsphere (4.1) a few weeks ago. Now that 4.1 is out: can someone clarify if he is finally real? Is is still working and is not officially supported?

    Best regards

I installed Converter Stand Alone on the server, but I still get the same error.

  • VCB with Windows 2000 Server before and after! Does not!

In our configuration (esx3.5, vi2.5 and vcb 1.5) we have problems get the pre post scripts running in Windows 2000 Server. It does not at all pre/start scripts. We need this because we have some strange databases that must be stopped before the snapshot and started after.

The 2000 machine is fully updated, and the esx servers are updated 4.

I also tried in a test environment with esx3i fully updated (beyond update 4) and vcb1.1

Pre-Post controls work perfectly in 2003 (not yet tested in 2008).

    What I tried:

    • Disable-ing the SyncDriver (must be a solution for Server 2000 with Exchange 2000)

    • Place scripts to a location different (C:\WINNT or C:\Windows or C:\Program VMware Tools\backupScripts.d

    • Adding C:\Program VMware Tools\backupScripts.d to the $PATH variable so that the script can be run from anywhere

    • Reinstall the VMWare tools.

The command I used to get the backup:

    v h vcbMounter.exe *. n u .local \n*-ipaddr:vcbtest. .local - r c:\vcb\vcbtest-full-01 t m nbd fullvm

    I also tried adding the switch "0 q" or "q 1".

No solutions seem to work. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Greetinx Atze

It works for me with a C:\Windows folder (even if windows is installed in C:\winnt),

    with files like pre-antigel - script.bat and post-thaw - script.bat

  • VCB with Symantec BE

Before making the BE for VM, I already install the kit of integration on the server. But could someone give me an example in details on how to configure the integration with BE kit.

first install VCB exe and read the readme.txt files. I suggest using BE 12.5. Easy to configure for VM backup. And prepare the arcitecture physical server and the shared storage. VCB server must be directly to a shared storage.

  • VCB with option fullvm and RDM

Is it just me, or we had to sacrifice the ability to snapshot a RDM in order to obtain a VCB backup to exclude a crazy RDM volume?

It seems, from what I can find, VCB v 1.5 will attempt to save the entire vm if it is capable of taking snapshots of the reader. The only way to exclude the player from the computer the process VCB virtual therefore put it to the Independent.

It's frustrating, because I have a SQL Server with a disc of TB Raw 1 attached, and I want only the C: drive at the level of the backup image.  Howevere when patches and development changes are made it is nice to be able to apply a snapshot to the whole machine.  Someone at - he found a way to get just VCB capture readers C: from the virtual computer for backup?

    -Cheers

    Hey Fishface.

(I want to say that the way the most affectionate, of course!) You can use vcbSnapshot and vcbExport to selectively back up files VMDK. Take a look at this post. It is rather dated, but still works. The only thing is that if you use a more recent backup software, you will need to use pre and post processing of the scripts instead of the GUI, but it works very well...

  • backup of vcb disc scripts?

Hi all, I searched on the boards of here looking for a base VCB for windows scripting just to make backup to disk.  Finally we Commvault pick up the files, so that all associated commvault scripts would be too good.

    Thank you!

You want to use the NBD (network) of a physical machine or SAN (iSCSI) or NBD (network) of a virtual machine mode or SAN (iSCSI or FC)

First of all, see the backup guide. He explains all modes. -> http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_vm_backup.pdf

Then, you can consult my doc on VCB with NetBackup, which explains how to configure VCB and scripts of pre-and post->http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1133

While you're at VIOPS, click the "Availability" button and search for documents that relate to your backup software.

  • Database backup RMAN with Veritas NetBackup catalog

    Hello

How can I use Veritas NetBackup to backup my database of catalog RMAN? I need to stop this catalog DB in order to save it. How can I plan with NetBackup?

    Thanks in advance.

    qtpham

    Hello

Normally, the catalog database backup is currently off cause is very small database and may remain unavailable for a few minutes. In my company, we use netbackup.
Try to schedule an offline backup of the database via the Netbackup graphical interface, it will generate RMAN scripts bpstart_notify. YOUR_POLICY_NAME and bpend_notify. YOUR_POLICY_NAME under/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/if you use SOLARIS.

  • Recommendations on the VCB Proxy material

    Hello world

I'll be implemented VCB on my site soon and I'm in the early stages of the COP.  I'm sizing of the VCB Proxy servers and I wondered what most people use in measurement of CPU, memory, operating system on the VCB proxy.  Everything I read said it depends, but I'm still looking for what people are doing out there.  I have 50 guests and 800 VMS that need to be backed up.  VM have an average of 50 to 300 GB of data on them.

I was looking at running a DL585 with 2 - dual-port HBA and 2 GigE connections.  I have up to 20 GB of memory, I can run while I was initially planning on running Windows 2003 standard only would need 4 GB of memory.  What is someone running their proxy VCB with Windows 2003 Enterprise edition?  Or how about 64-bit version of the operating system Windows to their proxies backup?   Thanks for any advice.

    Paul

    Paul-

    Welcome to the forums!

I'll assume that you have already read and that you understand the virtual machine backup Guide. The DL585 is an excellent choice. Win2k3 is fine with 4 GB of RAM. Use 32 bits if you are running a 32-bit backup program and use 64-bit if you use a 64-bit backup program. I know that the 64-bit version of NetBackup has NOT worked with VCB as a few months ago, only the 32-bit, you will need to test your application.

You can use three HBA ports. Don't worry aboutredundancy, worry not on performance. Your bottleneck will in fact be the Windows operating system and the way cmd.exe manages copies of files. You'll be getabout 1 GB per minute flow on a copy FullVM in the tank, so you must multiple processes on multiple dedicated paths. I have attached a diagram of the presentation I did on VCB at VMworld. I heard that some backup software running actually better on the network using traditional agents.

  • VCB vs SharePoint 2007

    VCB with integration of NetWorker:

With a battery of SharePoint 2007 entirely on the VMS, is that a backup VCB VMDK will be considered by SharePoint as a recovery backup disaster Point-in-time, if each server backup VCB VMDK to shut up is to launch in the same group of NetWorker?

Another way of saying: is all the snapshots that are synchronized as a period uniform from a point in time snapshot for each component (servers) of the farm if they are lauch by a single group under NetWorker?

  • VCB licenses for ESXi4

    Hi guys,.

A very simple question; but was much too difficult to confirm:

I understand that VCB will not work with the free version of ESXi4.  To use VCB with ESXi you must purchase a license VSphere (Standard/advanced/business/Business Plus), or can get away you with VSphere Essentials(i.e. Essentials or Essentials Plus)?

The documentation is vague and scattered on the site

    Thank you

Price for Essentials is 1 k$.

This package contains licenses for 3 ESXes 2 sockets more vCenter Foundation (which does not support more than 3 guests).
