Recommendations on the VCB Proxy material

Hello world

I'll be implemented VCB on my site soon and I'm in the early stages of the COP.  I'm sizing of the VCB Proxy servers and I wondered what most people use in measurement of CPU, memory, operating system on the VCB proxy.  Everything I read said it depends, but I'm still looking for what people are doing out there.  I have 50 guests and 800 VMS that need to be backed up.  VM have an average of 50 to 300 GB of data on them.

I was looking at running a DL585 with 2 - dual-port HBA and 2 GigE connections.  I have up to 20 GB of memory, I can run while I was initially planning on running Windows 2003 standard only would need 4 GB of memory.  What is someone running their proxy VCB with Windows 2003 Enterprise edition?  Or how about 64-bit version of the operating system Windows to their proxies backup?   Thanks for any advice.

Paul-

Welcome to the forums!

I'll assume that you have already read and that you understand the virtual machine backup Guide. The DL585 is an excellent choice. Win2k3 is fine with 4 GB of RAM. Use 32 bits if you are running a 32-bit backup program and use 64-bit if you use a 64-bit backup program. I know that the 64-bit version of NetBackup has NOT worked with VCB as a few months ago, only the 32-bit, you will need to test your application.

You can use three HBA ports. Don't worry aboutredundancy, worry not on performance. Your bottleneck will in fact be the Windows operating system and the way cmd.exe manages copies of files. You'll be getabout 1 GB per minute flow on a copy FullVM in the tank, so you must multiple processes on multiple dedicated paths. I have attached a diagram of the presentation I did on VCB at VMworld. I heard that some backup software running actually better on the network using traditional agents.

  • Presentation of ID host ESX host LUN to the VCB Proxy Server

I have a typical scenario where I have 3 ESX servers with 3 x 800 GB LUNS in a storage group separate on a CX 310 SAN box. The host LUN., of these 3 LUN Ids are 0, 1 and 2.

I have a specific host that starts from SAN, from the same box of CX 310 SAN. At this point of time, I have no choice to use this server as a Server Proxy VCB. As far as my knowledge goes, LUNS of the ESX servers must be made visible to VCB Proxy Server, as they are presented to the ESX servers.

My question here is, as the designated Proxy VCB server is booting from the SAN, he already has a host LUN 0 to Id the logic unit number this is the start of. The Id to host ONE of the first 800 GB LUN in the ESX Server storage group is also Host Id 0. Now, if I try to make the LUNS in storage group visible on the VCB Proxy Server ESX, is there not a shock of the VCB Proxy 0 host Id and Id host ESX Lun 0? I'm confused, I don't have a test envirinment where I could try this before I could actually go forward with any solution.

My intention is to perform a backup outside LAN of the VMDK.

Any help is that this respect is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    (1) Yes, you can have different host for VCB then for your ESX host LUN ID

    (2) Yes, you can use the identifiers of naa, it will automatically use the identifiers of naa, no need to configure anything at all.

  • Size of the VCB proxy mount point?

We are looking to integrate VCB with HP Server 6.0 the VCB proxy host will have hosted on the San storage, I need to save about 2.6 TB of data vmfs by night. We want to not backup of the virtual machine at the level of the image to the facility.

My question is: should my proxy server VCB a mount point of 2.6 TB, or does only need a larger size of the VM mount point?

It depends on how you plan your backups. VCB backup will copy the VMDK file in the staging area of the VCB then as backup. If you save just a VMDK in time then there must be enough space to hold the largest VMDK. If you are running backups obvisouly Parallels, there should be enough space to contain all the VMDK files to backup at any time

  • newbie... possible to install the VCB proxy on multiple servers?

Hello... Is it possible to install the VCB proxy on multiple servers of the art on the same ESX server host computer?

It is possible to use several VCB servers in your environment (we have 3), but they reference the virtual center to discover the virtual machine rather than directly to each host...

You can use several servers VCB to connect on the same host if you carefully scripted specific vcbMounter commands to complete your backups...

    Hello everyone

I had to install a Solution of the VCB Proxy. Among the issues is "Disabling Multi-Pathing on the VCB Proxy Server.

Why would it be necessary to disable the multiple paths on th e VCB Server? What would be the steps to disable the multiple paths.

  • Is it normal that luns appears in win2k3 VCB proxy device manager?

    Hi all

Running Vsphere and VCB mounted windows 2003 with EMC cx500. Have zoned so that the vcb proxy can see all the san LUNS. I ran the DISKPART automount disable commands, but I see all my san LUNS appear in the Device Manager, and when I go to disk management, they have all posted, don't wait for someone to put in form by accident.

Just curious to know if it is as expected and others see the same behavior.

    Thank you very much!

    Hi Liam,

I have the exact same behavior on all my proxies VCB (7 of them!)

  • Backup Exec and VCB proxy server configuration

    Hello

I am installing Backup Exec to back up my virtual machine on an ESX Server, but I get the following error:

    *Backup- VMVCB::ESX01VCGuestVm(DC)ha-datacenter(DC)vmserver03*

V-79-57344-38220 - Backup of the virtual machine 'server03' failed. VMware VCB framework reported the following error

Error: Failed to open the disk: Cannot access a SAN/iSCSI LUN backing this virtual disk. (Hint: Option "-m ndb" swtiches vcbMounter to network base disk access if this is what you want.)

It's my setup. I have an ESX Server connected to a San. I store my images on the SAN. I have Backup Exec installed on our file server that is also attached to the SAN and try to use this server as my VCB proxy server. I have installed on my server BE VCB framework and the enterprise Converter 3.03. I have setup a temporary staging that the server can access to place its snapshots on.

My BE\VCB proxy server cannot access the SAN LUN that holds the images. My understanding of the process is that of BE I navigate on the ESX Server and select the virtual machine, I want to backup, and because the ESX Server can access the SAN LUNS where VM images are stored throughout the process of alignment of the image and place in the temporary storage area so that BE can then throw tape should work.

Can someone help to solve my problem?

    See you soon

Yes, it is the intention of the VCB.  Take the resources needed to run the backup out of the host and on the VCB proxy server.  You can define VCB to use the 'LAN' mode which backs the service console of the virtual computer on the network, but it is slower and puts more pressure on the host.

Make sure you carefully follow the VCB document.  There are some things you need to do on the proxy before presenting the LUN as cutting diskpart automount. If you don't there is a chance that the lun might get corrupted and your VM would go bye-bye.

  • Adding storage to esx. Problems with VCB proxy

    Hello

I just added 4 FC LUN and them have initialized on ESX 3.02 with no problems.

I went to the VCB proxy, which had the automount disable, then I think that I made a mistake because I put them online (done not initialized) and after that Vmware can't access these drives vmfs.

Try to solve this problem I did the automount disable and scrub, but I don't know what to do next. Should I restart VCB proxy?

According to some posts here, I've run ' fdisk-l/dev/SD all? "command and it shows that these 4 discs didn't fb partition type.

Based in another post, I ran fdisk against each drive but I don't have the ability to place the partition type.

Can someone help me on this?

    Thank you

My DSL is peeling. But looking over your Yes steps. I can take down a second chance. I can't provide reliable help that I continue to be disconnected.

  • VCB proxy on iScsi

    Hi all

I have connected to SAN FC ESX3.5, cause there is shortage in FC HBA I want to connect the VCB proxy on iScsi storage

is it possible even if the esx hosts are connected through FC?

If this isn't the case, I'm only left with the LAN of the vcb mode?

    Thank you

Yes, VCB supports iSCSI with ESX 3.5. Please see the release ESX3.5 notes.

  • Choose a specific NETWORK card in VCB Proxy?

Hi, I have VMware Consolidated Backup installed on a VCB Proxy with two network adapters. A NIC goes to the switch for iSCSI box, and the other NETWORK adapter goes to the general network switch. How can I specify which NETWORK card to use?

Here's the problem I have, is that, without the "nbd m" option is specified, it gives me an error:

"vcbMounter" 1784 error] error: could not open the drive: cannot access the SAN/iSCSI LUN support this virtual disk.

However, if I use the "nbd-m" option, VCB can see the iSCSI and do a backup very well. However, it does so through the NETWORK adapter connected to the general network and not through the NETWORK adapter go to the iSCSi switch. If I don't have the two switches are connected, it does not at all. This seems to be a waste of bandwidth to send the backup through two switches traffic.

Is there a way to specify which NETWORK card to use for backups in VCB?

    TIA-danno

If your VMFS volumes are on an iSCSI array and you don't have any iSCSI HBAs in your VCB proxy, you must have Microsoft iSCSI initiator installed. Once you have installed, you must ensure that your VMFS volumes are exposed to the initator on the VCB proxy, so you can mount them. In the iSCSI initiator parameters, you can specify the IP source (NIC) on the server to use to connect to the iSCSI target.

Hope that helps! Please, help me by marking my response as "useful" or "correct", if you feel it is useful!

    Pleas help me.

Thank you, I looked again articles of the Center for help and resolved the problem by disabling cookies and hidden history.

  • VCB proxy on a virtual machine?

    Hello

You may want to put a VCB proxy on a virtual machine.  I understand that this is possible if the storage is on iSCSI or NFS, but unfortunately, we on the CF.

    Is this possible?

    Thank you!

Discover Mode Hot-add SCSI on p.26 of Virtual Machine backup Guide.

    Good luck!

  • Is it possible to exclude some discs of the VCB image-level backups?

I have VCB with Backup Exec 12 running successfully.  Image and at the level of the backup files work as expected.  However, I have a server with a large data volume (more than one terabyte) that I would be able to exclude at the Image level backups, using only at the level of the files or any other means to back it up.  It's possible?  A thought I had was to configure the volume in physical rather than virtual compatibility mode.  Thoughts?  Recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

A RAW device in mode physikal will not be saved in the VCB. I do it with our databases that reside on the RAW devices in the SAN, and I don't want that they are backed up with VCB. So, it is definitely possible.

  • Deeply concerned by the CRS review material.

Hi iam people worried a lot of material to review secure Channel. There seems to be differences between the Install and Config course material and PDF files recommended in the blueprint! For example:

Response of isolation per VM. Course material indicates the DEFAULT value is "Switch off" and now with the update 2 pdf it's 'let on. ' So the question is which will accept the Pearson view test as a good answer?

The online pdf files to be Gospel?

    Best regards

    Bob

These are the right PDF files, and as I said in my answer previous go with PDF files on the tutorials. If you have studied PDF files on areas in the examination plan, and passed simulated too, you're ready - good luck.

You don't specifically ask U2 or U3, but did the first reply to your original message.
