  • Upgrade paths for vCenter Server 4.0/32-bit to 64-bit/5.0

So, for various reasons beyond my control, when we installed vCenter server when we migrated from 3.5 to 4.0, it has been installed on 32-bit Windows.

Data backended by a full instance of SQL Server (not the MSDE version that comes pre-packaged with vCenter).

So, I try to understand the strategy of less impact for the trip to 5.0.

One idea I had is simply to build a new 'home' for vCenter Server on x 86-64 and point the application on the existing database running on 32-bit windows server. (I'm guessing that the 32/64-bit nature of the database server itself is largely irrelevant as it allows 64-bit vCenter Server to talk to it). I think then that all information cluster all would remain intact since it's in the database, etc..

If I had to, I guess, we could install vCenter 4.0 (64-bit) on the new host and THEN perform the upgrade, if it was really important, but I somehow don't think it is.

Once that is done, we would eventually just make a backup/restore type upgrade path to move data out of the old host and the new host and re-point vCenter Server in its local database now.

A that someone does something similar to this? Traps, we should be aware of? Warnings that it would never work the way we expect it to be, etc, etc. ?

That's what I'd do.  It your DB is remote, it is a fairly straightforward upgrade.

    1. turn off your old Instance vCenter

    2. backup your DB instance

3 copy the SSL directory off the old vCenter and the new (you'll probably to manually create the path, before installing vCenter)

4 set up your ODBC connection and test

    5. install vCenter and use existing DB

Assuming that you are going to use the same host name and IP address for your new instance of vCenter, like your old, all stocks will be as it was before the upgrade.

  • equivalent of Vcenter / responsible vlab architecture 32-bit?

    Hi all

I think I'm on the right group... If not sorry and let me know what is the right one.

My company has merged with another and we have a center of IBM HS20 blade blades 32 bit.

I can't install esxi 4.0 because it requires 64 bit architecture (and even for Vcenter... etc.), ok, I'll use ESXi 3.5...

So now the question: what are the latest version which would be suitable for the Vcenter management and virtual practical work?

    Thanks in advance

    L

You can install vCenter Server 2.5 or 4.0.

    Both can manage ESXi 3.5.

And vCenter Server 4.0 can be installed both in 32-bit or 64-bit.

See the previous doc for all this matrix.

  • VCenter does support 32 bit address post?

    Hello

IM installing vCenter on a 32-bit Windows 2008 with 4 GB of RAM.

We intend to add more memory shortly.

VCenter does support 32-bit address extension, is there any known issues?

    Thank you

x 86 is not an identification for 32 bit, which is a hardware platform.  See release notes

vCenter Server 4.1 supports installation on platforms Windows 64 - bit only. If you have VMware VirtualCenter 2.x installed, see vSphere Upgrade Guide for instructions on installing vCenter Server on a 64-bit operating system and preservation of your VirtualCenter database.

    Hello world

    I have Windows Server 2003 STD x 6 R2 SP2 with SQL Server 2008 STD x 64 SP1, I have successfully created 32-bit DSN using the ODBCad32.exe

    > where can I get the vCenter pure 64-bit installation files?

vCenter isn't 64-bit, it supports 64 - bit OS.  Hence the need for the 32-bit DSN.

O KB acima fala VAPP vCOPs, mas a idéia e a mesma para outro VAPP, wave resumidamente, voce desliga any as VMs do VAPP, migra as cluster of virtual machines para o novo, criar VMs 'vazias"com nightclubs don't thin paralytic, export o VAPP com as thin VMs 'vazias" (o be bastante rapido), imported no cluster of novo, numbers a VM "vazia" thin , migra as VMs originais para o VAPP, confirmed an order of inicializacao das VMs no VAPP e depois e so iniciar o VAPP.

  • vCenter does not connect after upgrade to 2.0

I just upgraded to version 2.0 GA and after that it's over I had a message on it is not not able to connect to one of my vCenter servers.  It worked before the upgrade.

When I try and test the connection I get the following error: transport HTTP error: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: java.security.cert.CertificateException: certificate is not consistent with the constraints of the algorithm

I restarted vCenter services without a change in behavior.  vCenter version is 5.0 Update 2

The problem has been resolved.  It is thanks to our vCenter server with a 512-bit SSL on it (was a previous update to 4.0).

Java's LogInsight 2.0 security settings need to be at least 1024-bit SSL.  As a temporary work around support changed settings only need a 512-bit key.  It needed a reboot of the Insight journal.

I'm fine with this fix since we planned to deploy a new server vCenter in the coming months.

  • VCenter on MS SQL 2008 R2 installation

    Hello

    I can't install vCenter (4.1 Update 1).

    I installed a basic MS SQL Server R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2.

Installing vCenter I block at the choice of the database level.

He therefore asks me if I want to use a 2005 Express version or a database of existing support. So I choose the second option, but it offers me nothing in the drop-down list (DSN).

When I enter the name of the previously created DSN (via the control panel > administrative tools > Data Source (ODBC)), I have an error message "the DSN"xxx"does not exist or is not a 64-bit system DSN. vCenter Server requires a 64-bit system DSN. »

1 - remember to install the client SQL 2008 R2 on the vCenter

2 good create a "System DSN" and not UN "user DSN".

    3. to install at least a vCenter 4.1 (en 4.0 go looking for ODBC administration in SysWOW64)

  • How to upgrade v4.1 when vCenter is a virtual machine?

    Hello

We have ESXi 4.1 on our host (only 1) and want to update to the latest version.  Our vCenter server is a 64-bit VM.  Prior to v4.1, we used the host update utility, but it can not be used today.  Can someone please tell me how we can put our host firmware update and other critical updates when vCenter is on a virtual machine?  It seems that the host must be placed in Maintenance Mode, and all the virtual machines in this regard must be stopped, so I have a problem before the hen's egg.  We do not have another host that we can migrate virtual machines to when the update...

    Thank you for your help,

    Mike

You will have to establish a direct connection to your host with the vSphere client, close the VMs and placing the host in maintenance mode.  You can then use the vihostupdate of the vCLI or InstallVMHostUpdate of PowerCLI for updating your host.  With the vCLI or PowerCLI you can also script the closure of VMs and placing the host in maintenance mode. http://www.VMware.com/support/developer/PowerCLI/PowerCLI41U1/HTML/install-VMHostPatch.html

  • The upgrade to VCenter 4.1 3.5U4

    Aloha,

It is where I am now-

    A PowerEdge 2950 running VCenter 3.5U4 on 32-bit 2 k 3 to four ESX 3.5U4 hosts. Database is on a separate server from SQL2k8

    A second 2950 run 2 k 3 x 64 with a 64-bit DSN connection to the database

The plan is to close the first machine and install VCenter 4.1 on the second machine. I have read the manual upgrade for this scenario

and I can't really determine this. Assuming that upgrade work, if my datacenter, clusters and hosts just magically appear in the news

4.1 client? Or anything that needs to be recreated?

    Mahalo,

    Bill

you will need to copy the SSL folder out of the old server vCenter and the new creation of the directory structure before installing vCenter.

  • Manage ESX 4.1i hosts to vCenter 4.0 Server

We currently have an installation vCenter 4.0 with a bit of configuration inside.  It handles 8 ESXi 4.0 hosts.   We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.   The hosts are across a firewall.  We opened all the ports required by the firewall and no longer see no traffic blocked at the firewall level.   Successfully, we can add 4.1 guests to our installation vcenter but in 10 seconds to set up communications, vCenter loses its connection to the 4.1 hosts.   Is it possible that the issue we have is that agent vCenter 4.0 is not compatible with ESX 4.1i hosts before?    Thank you.

We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.

Have you read the manual?  You must be at 4.1 to manage 4.1 hosts, period.

Is it possible that the issue we have is that agent vCenter 4.0 is not compatible with ESX 4.1i hosts before?

Is it true, what keeps you upgrade to 4.1?  It is a piece of cake, takes every 10 minutes.

  • questions of DSN vCenter 4.1

I am trying to upgrade our environment vSphere 4.1. Currently, my vCenter server resides on 64-bit Windows 2008 and vCenter and VUM 4.0 databases use 32-bit DSN created manually through the utility odbc32.

According to the literature, vCenter 4.1 requires a 64-bit DSN. However, when I run the upgrade, it recognizes my 32-bit vCenter DSN and don't complain to use for the upgrade. At this point, I cancelled the upgrade for further research.

The funny thing was, I now a 64-bit DSN appearing in my ODBC connections named "vCenter. My question is this: is the upgrade to vCenter 'upgrade' your DSN existing 32-bit to 64-bit? It would seem that this was my case but I have not finished the upgrade remains to be verified.

I guess for new facilities of 4.1 you must create the DSN of 64 - bit at the beginning.

Yes, it has been converted. Sometimes it is not working properly, however, and you will need to perform a manual on your DB restore so that everything works correctly.
