vCenter Database Name

Dear all,

I intend to implement a number of databases of vcenter in different data centers - all have the same standard name, say 'VCDATA '.

Subsequently, the plan is to use modes related to connect to vcenter instances - is there any problem with the same database name when you use bound mode?

Thank you

I didn't have the need to use additional related yet myself, but as far I understand modes related, there is no need to use again the same PB (for example, MSSQL, Oracle,...) for the different vCenter servers that you want to link. When you configure related modes vCenter replicates only the data necessary to access the services (information connection, certificates), information on licenses, user roles using Microsoft ADAM. The different vCenter servers go directly to other databases. With the vSphere Client you only access the vCenter vCenter servers Service.

  • placement of vCenter database

Scenario: SRV1 is a virtual machine that has installed vcenter.  The vCenter database (SQL) is on VM SRV2.  Now I want to get SRV2, do little maintenance, change the configuration of the VM, etc..  Is it possible if the SQL database is offline?  A cluster or something similar would be necessary in this case?

If stop you the SRV2 for maintenance the vCenter isn't available, but you can still connect directly to the ESXi host where SRV2 and make the virtual machine configuration changes... The SRV2 vmx10 hardware version, you should can the vSphere Client 5.5 02 update to be able to change the settings for the virtual machine.

  • vCenter host name does not change after upgrade to different to host

    Hello

Yesterday I've updated vcenter server 5.0 to 5.1 in my lab environment. everything goes well, I faced some problems after the upgrade to 5.1. Below the questions I met

1 vcenter service is stopped - solved by stopping Server vcenter 5.0, because my SQL Server must always connect to my server vcenter 5.0. Basic Upgrade to 5.1

The host name of vcenter 5.0 is vcp.lab.com

2 vcenter 5.1 host name is vcp5.lab.com, when I connect to vcenter server with the host name or IP address still shows the old vcp.lab.com at the top of the console to vcenter

How to solve this kind of issue. Is there any problem with certification because I copied the secure channel to the server vcp5 Server certification.

Go to the menu Administration-> vCenter Server settings-> the run settings and type the name of the new server vCenter on vCenter Server Name.

  • vCenter database backup

You back up the databases behind vcenter? From what I understand, they are MSSQL express? I was wondering what backup procedures deploy you databases to vcenter, I guess his key altogether to save the database in particular in concerned security agencies that the database contains potential forensic audit logs for the steps taken in your data center? What is risk if you do not save your vcenter SQLexpress DB? If so?

It is important to back up your vCenter database because it contains all information about the configuration of your vCenter and logs. The risk is based on the complexity of your vSphere environment - if it is complex with dVswitches, configuraitons at clusters etc, then you want to back up the database, or else you will have to re-create the environment by hand. who will be your vCenter offline environment until the rebuild is complete. If it's less complex the downtime you'll rebuild the environment will be reduced.

  • What informaion all get stored vCenter database?

I'm looking at information stored in the database. As database to store information for ESX Cluster, resource POOL etc... or something else.

Also if my database crashed then VC will not work. If I reinstall (not restore from backup) of the database what information I get when I connect to the CR.

    Welcome to the communities...

As database to store information for ESX Cluster, resource POOL etc... or something else.

vCenter database has all the information that never see you via vSphere Client, Datacenter, Cluter, VM, details vSwitch, vDS datastore, Performace etc...

Check out the guide to find out what information is store in DB

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/vc_dbviews_41.PDF

Also if my database crashed then VC will not work. If I reinstall (not restore from backup) of the database what information I get when I connect to the CR.

If not restore the backup and then his new vCenter similar facility and you will have to perform all the related configuration vCente and you will lose all the performance statistics

  • Question on the vCenter database works

I'm trying to find out what the vCenter database consists of making it grow. Also is there a good way to monitor growth, so you don't need more space if you are using SQL Express?

I deployed an OVA the other day and he watered vCenter because there was no room so he could do his thing. We were on SQL SERVER 2005 Express with the 4 GB limit and upgraded to SQL Express 2008 R2 with a limit of 10 GB to get going again. We do not want to do it again and I'm getting an idea of how the functions of data base and forcing it to fill up. We do not want to go with an external database at this point either.

    Hello

Do you have a third party monitoring tool, which keep of querying data from the vCenter server. This can result in significant events. Also utility backup too can generate significant events to develop the database. .

I´ll use this counter to monitor a threshold of vcpu time ready to do I ve two options:

    1. create alarm in vcenter (but I think that vcenter cannot see this setting for surveillance and alarm)

    2. tap a counter of the rdy % of vcpu on my monitoring software.

    I found a guide on this subject, but don't have % rdy (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vc_dbviews_40.pdf ) I m using vcenter 4.1

SQL express edition 2008 32/64 bit

The limitation is NOT on the number of hosts or VMs. SQL limitation only based on size.

    SQL Express 2005/2008 - 4 GB

    SQL Express 2008 R2 to 10 GB

SQL Express 2012 to 10 GB

  • vCenter database operations?

VCops5 requires its own database outside the vCenter database? Ive went through the documentation and it looks like a must be configured. However, I saw install messages/videos where no configuration database is performed. I just assumed it simply collected vCenter DB information and doesn't have its own.

Please correct me if Im wrong (most likely).

    Thank you all!

    Joe

vCops uses a separate DB (FSDB). This DB is already set up when you install the version of vCops TIME. If you install the stand alone vCops, you need to configure a SQL or Oracle back-end server. Please see the Installation and Configuration Guide for more information.

  • vCenter database disk space

    Hello

We have vcenter database (SQL 2005) on a computer separate virtual as the vcenter server. Vcenter database drive currently has 1.5 GB of available space.

What is the best way to ensure that we are not running out of disk space on the unit containing the vcenter database?

    Thank you

assuming that your DB is not on the system (c) partition, but rather on a separate data partition, you can use Windows diskpart to extend the volume without interruption to the BONE.

Can we assume that the VM SQL has different HARD drives that are presented to each volume in the operating system?  If so, you can increase the size of the HARD drive in the vSphere Client, then run diskpart in the volume in the operating system.

Also, see the bottom of discussion for some good advice on preserving the health of your VCDB

  • Migration vCenter database of the local instance to a remote server

    Hello

My vCenter database is installed on the local server with the vCenter server.  When installing without DSN was created because the local database.  Now, I need to create a dedicated server to host the database but can't find where, in the current installation, I would like to change to vCenter point to the new location.

    I read these KBs

KB.VMware.com/kb/7960893 - movement of the SQL Server to vCenter database
KB.VMware.com/kb/5850444 - migration vCenter Server on a different host machine
KB.VMware.com/kb/1003928 - troubleshooting the database data source used by the VirtualCenter Server

Problem is that (1) there is no DSN, (2) the registry key is not there either, and (3) I cannot find what to change in the vpxd.conf file

I am able to "migrate the database" and "can create a new dsn to point to the new location.

So, the question is where can I find the current configuration of the database\dsn.

    I hope that's clear

    Hi VMGenie,

The reason why it does not appear THAT DSN u is because your machine VC can be 64-bit and the vCenter uses 32-bit DSN settings.

Open the C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe folder for this exe... it should show u the DSN settings.
