vCenter Server Authentication

Hi all

Is not a major problem, but just a matter of configuration.  I'm in transition my new place of work to run on the vCenter Server Appliance 5.0 to vCenter Server 5.1.  The issue I'm having is that on the old device users can just connect with their user name (e.g. BobJohnson), but on my new server, they are required to use their complete credentials of the AD ([email protected]).

As I said not a major problem, I'm just glad that the AD link works without problem.  It is more just me trying to make the transition as transparent as possible by not requiring my users to connect with a different user name that they do not.

Can someone point me in the right direction to activate vClient to authenticate with the short user name?  I don't know how the guy in front of me was is that it works.

Thanks in advance, broadband
Tim

Do need me a separate license for VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat for a remote SQL Server database?

Only a single vCenter Server Heartbeat license is necessary to protect the components of the vCenter Server installed remotely, including SQL Server. A single license is also used for several UNIQUE for vCenter Server services protected authentication servers. A license is required per instance of vCenter Server.

  • vCenter Server 5.0, 5.5, and SSO deployment Modes

    Hello

Just after a few reviews I've seen conflicting opinions on this.

I have half a dozen instances of vCenter server. They are all on the same AD domain but quite geographically dispersed and the links are of variable quality. Each site has its own VC based on vSphere 5.0 on 2008 Server with a separate database providing functions and MS SQL Server. Every VC has its own instance (local) Single Sign On hosted on the local SQL DB. All instances are independent, there is no bound mode and or other dependencies between them. Other than the AD, they are completely isolated. They are also quite low (a few hundred VMs, less than 10 guests).

I plan to spend 5.5 and considered him my options for SINGLE sign-on. According to the Documentation Center 5.5 I have three options of SSO - Standalone/Basic, high availability, and Multisite.

Ignoring the high availability, I don't know if I should go to basic, with a standalone (local to the VC) SSO to each site or multi-site, with a local SSO to each site but a part of the same domain of SSO authentication. The 5.5 Documentation Centre indicates that if I do not use related modes (which I am not) then a basic each site deployment will end.

However, the 20724335 KB that the last line seems to indicate that multisite reading is preferable for instances of PASS-THROUGH authentication after the first installation.

Important : VMware recommends this deployment mode during the installation of servers to Single Sign-On vCenter extra in your environment.

At the moment I tend to keep it simple and stick to the base, but I'd like to see if someone else has done this differently, and if I should go down the road of multisite?

    Thank you

    Chris

The multisite configuration will you be gives certain advantages, as built-in multi-master replication automatic which will ensure all SSO cases are always in sync and of course the possibility of using the Mode related to the future, but if it is not important in your environment, the will of stand-alone deployment / Basic works very well.

  • vCenter Server Linked Mode or not?

    Hello

I had the following scenario: I have an existing with 8 physical ESX host Esx environment and virtualized 1 vCenter server for all direction and 1 Cluster. Now (for Oracle license costs) my company advised me to create a second group of Esx with 4 physical ESX host.

My question is related to the vCenter for the management of the two clusters. It is recommended to install a second vCenter Server for the Oracle VM Cluster and server vCenter link the two together (linked modes) or let them operate separately or use only 1 vCenter Server for the management of the cluster 2?

In your opinion, what are the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES?

    Thank you!

Just bound mode will not give you solution Dr. bound Mode is used when there are two vcenters and they are linked together to achieve centralized management. It will all show you the inventory in both the vCenters. The first vcenter will both his and 2nd vCenters inventory and the second will have its own and inventory of 1.

But using a UNIQUE multi-site authentication users/permissions will be replicated and since you have the replication table both of them should work together and give you DR.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server to vCenter Server 5.1 5.1 update 1 when the SQL database is remote and vCenter Server Heartbeat is installed

    Hi guys,.

I'm in the middle of an upgrade to vSphere 5.1 5.1 vSphere update 1. I have vCenter protected by HB and SQL on a separate computer (also protected by HB) I also run Syslog, Update Manager and Proxy authentication on vCenter.

I've successfully upgraded HB on all 4 nodes (2 x vCenter & 2 x SQL) and started the upgrade components on the secondary according to the •vCenter Server Heartbeat 6.5 server and vCenter Update 1 Installation on Windows Server 2008 when the secondary server is virtual (PDF) http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcenter-server-heartbeat-65-u1-installation-windows-2008-virtual-guide.pdf

    I got to step 3.c

    3. change the primary/active server role:

a launch of the vCenter Server Heartbeat wizard configure server and click the tab of the Machine to change the server role for the current server (primary) to the active State and click Finish.

b using the Service Control Manager, start the Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter service.

c using the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console, check that all the status icons on the server: summary page are green indicating that the boot process is completed and protected from all the services are started.

d using the Service Control Manager, stop the service Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter.

As the vCenter service does not start, I'm stuck at this point. As far as I'm concerned, the error is quite logical. I've updated vCenter using the secondary server, and then I'm trying to connect (according to the guide) with another version that breaks down.

If I continue with the services stop and launch the installer SSO, it is trying to perform an uninstall!

Did I miss something in this upgrade?

The guide States now specifically to restore the vCenter database before proceeding with any other measure, this is copied below for convenience: "the upgrade of the main server of the upgrade process further guess upgrading the secondary server completed successfully. Procedure 1 before continuing the upgrade process, perform a restore of the database of vCenter Server, Single Sign-On database, VMware Update Manager database and SSL certificates that were backed up in step 4 on the secondary server. regards Ciaran

I don't understand why. The user that I configured in the configuration of the plugin vCenter is an administrator and has all privileges...

    You have an idea?

    Thanks for your help.

    Concerning

    Hello!

Are you sure the user that you have configured to connect to vCenter has the appropriate permissions to this level?

Even for an administrator at the level of the root in vCenter you can remove/override the lower-level permissions.

    Using SSO?

And: What authentication policy for the vCenter Plugin have you configured?

With a ' user' logs also the user connect to vSphere WebClient / vCO must have the appropriate permissions.

You can try to reconfigure the vCO to use a "shared session", then for all operations of the user you set up (hopefully with administrative permissions in vCenter) is used for all operations.

Is it possible to configure vCentere Server with an external smtp server?

In our environment, we must configure vCenter server to send email alerts when the alarms are triggered. We use the google apps (smtp.gmail.com) server as our official email server.

  • Relocation of vCenter Server to another domain

    Here's the situation:

I have a 2 vCenter 4.0 update server that I need to join another AD area, which is located in another forest with no trust relationship.  I also need to move my vCenter 2008 the SQL server to the new domain.  In short, so I need to move a vCenter server and SQL server field ABC to XYZ area.  The two servers running Windows 2008 R2.

Should what order I move these servers to the new domain?

What and in what order should I fill out to do this?

I know that I will have to recreate my accounts of service in the new domain and change my ODBC connections.

What about ESX hosts?  There are 3 hosts in a cluster.  They should all be moved to the new domain as well.

Anyone have any suggestions to help me do this? Point of departure?  Thank you!!

Okay, that's easy.  Remove from the old domain, restart.  Add to the new domain, reboot.

    Piece of cake.

What and in what order should I fill out to do this?

Use SQL authentication because Windows will not work if the 2 domains are not approved

What about ESX hosts? There are 3 hosts in a cluster. They should all be moved to the new domain as well.

NOPE.  ESX are not joined to a domain.  Change areas is one thing, changing IP is quite another.  If they are STILL accessible by the intellectual property after the domain change, then nothing else to do with ESX.
