vCenter Server 5.0, 5.5, and SSO deployment Modes

Hello

Just after a few reviews I've seen conflicting opinions on this.

I have half a dozen instances of vCenter server. They are all on the same AD domain but quite geographically dispersed and the links are of variable quality. Each site has its own VC based on vSphere 5.0 on 2008 Server with a separate database providing functions and MS SQL Server. Every VC has its own instance (local) Single Sign On hosted on the local SQL DB. All instances are independent, there is no bound mode and or other dependencies between them. Other than the AD, they are completely isolated. They are also quite low (a few hundred VMs, less than 10 guests).

I plan to spend 5.5 and considered him my options for SINGLE sign-on. According to the Documentation Center 5.5 I have three options of SSO - Standalone/Basic, high availability, and Multisite.

Ignoring the high availability, I don't know if I should go to basic, with a standalone (local to the VC) SSO to each site or multi-site, with a local SSO to each site but a part of the same domain of SSO authentication. The 5.5 Documentation Centre indicates that if I do not use related modes (which I am not) then a basic each site deployment will end.

However, the 20724335 KB that the last line seems to indicate that multisite reading is preferable for instances of PASS-THROUGH authentication after the first installation.

Important : VMware recommends this deployment mode during the installation of servers to Single Sign-On vCenter extra in your environment.

At the moment I tend to keep it simple and stick to the base, but I'd like to see if someone else has done this differently, and if I should go down the road of multisite?

Thank you

Chris

The multisite configuration will you be gives certain advantages, as built-in multi-master replication automatic which will ensure all SSO cases are always in sync and of course the possibility of using the Mode related to the future, but if it is not important in your environment, the will of stand-alone deployment / Basic works very well.

  • vCenter Server - rename the config files and moving datastore

Our vCenter VMware Server (4.1.0) is a virtual machine. The vCenter Server database is stored on a SQL Server that is also a virtual machine. The configuration files for the server vCenter and file a vmdk are located on a data store and the other vmdk file is located on another data store. This isn't a problem, but the parent folders that store these files have different names and do not reflect the name of the vCenter Server VM. Also the names of configuration files are different for the vmdk file names. I would like to move and rename files vmdk my vCenter Server to another data store and all the configuration files so that the parent folder that stores all the files has the same name as my vCenter Server VM and all of the files in the folder are on behalf of my vCenter Server VM.

  • vDS and vCenter Server on SAN

I have a very specific question about it as possible.

I have 3 guests with no local VMFS (ESXi installed on a Flash cards) and all data warehouses are on the SAN.

VCenter Server is a virtual machine residing on the SAN.

SAN access is configured with iSCSI connected through a vDS.

What would happen if there is a power failure?

Say that I turn on the SAN first, then try to power on the hosts, the hosts would have access to the San while vCenter Server is still off powerd (and because it's aVM)?

    Thanks for your understanding!

On VMware ESXi ESX, the vDS configuration is saved on /etc/vmware/dvsdata.db. The file .dvsdata of data warehouses are used by HA and stores some information as the State of the port and its stats.

Hello, I am facing installation stuffs now. It's about installation vCenter server 5.5 under windows.

I'm just in my lab. He went well when I installed vCenter server device and I can do the remaining animals vSphere.

But this time I must try to use vCenter in windows. I'm stuck in the 'server URL search"in installing vCenter.

Is it OK to install the vCenter without AD and DNS server as I do now. If this isn't the case, pls guide me.

You must at least COMPLETE your vCenter server field cannot be resolved and if you do not have DNS server in your lab, try to configure the host files... and on the announcement, if you do not have Active Directory domain or the vCenter Server belongs to a workgroup, not all features are available.

Does anyone know if 2 vCenter servers can use the same database VUM?  I'm building a new vCenter server dedicated to View 4, and I wonder if I need to have a separate database.

You will need a separate VUM server, which requires its own database, unfortunately it cannot be shared

  • vCenter Server 5.5 silent installation problem

Our requirement is, vCenter Server 5.5 must be installed in silent mode with its default SQL express database.

To do this, I am referring http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vcenter_server_cmdline_install.pdf documentation.

I am able to do a silent install of SSO and the inventory of service components, but stuck to a vCenter Server silent installation. • vCenter Server

In case the server vCenter Server has encountered a problem and needs to re-setup of vCenter, what happens to what follows? They will always work?

    1. high availability

    2 DRS (automatic)

    3. distributed switch connectivity

    4 vSphere replication

    5. Advanced vSphere of data protection

    6 site Recovery Manager

    7 cluster VSAN

During the time where the vCenter server is unavailable.

    1. high availability - Yes, but the management of Cluster HA is possible only when your vCenter gets online

    2 DRS (automatic) - No.

    3. distributed communication switch connectivity - Yes, the VMs will not face questions, data flow is managed completely by ESXi hosts, but your DVS control plan is not available to change the Setup in it.

4 vSphere replication - work should, don't know if.

5 vSphere Data Protection advanced - should work, not too sure.

6 site Recovery Manager - no.

7 cluster VSAN - Yes, but the handling of the VSAN that we are using vSphere Web Client is going to be affected.

and if you need to re - install server vCenter completely. so in this case, you need to take action based on how you re - install your vCenter. For example, if you have fresh installation complete you vCenter server then you need to start building your vCenter Server inventory and take steps to add your ESXi hosts in this new inventory.

  • SQL Server edition full for vCenter Server 6.0

    Hello

Just learn that vCenter 6.0 does not support SQL Server Express.

We intend to use SQL Server 2008R2 as the database of vCenter Server 6.

We would like to ask for your opinion if we should use the full 32-bit or 64-bit SQL Server Edition?  For SQL Server Express, 64 - Bit is used, I think that we need to use 64 bits one, is this correct?

    Your opinion is requested.

Just learn that vCenter 6.0 does not support SQL Server Express.

The Windows 6.0 vCenter dropped the integrated SQL Express, BUT instead, it comes with a SQL database vPostgres shipped to replace it with similar restrictions. You don't need to install your own SQL server if you're ok with these limits. See the following article:

vSphere 6 - clarify misinformation. VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

Databases are supported for installing windows SQL 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014, Oracle 11g and 12 c as well as the possibility of using an embedded database vPostgres on windows vPostgres is limited to 20 guests and 200 VMs. Upgrades where SQL express is installed will be converted to vPostgres. The vCenter Server Appliance supports the vPostgres shipped to full scale, the host of 1000 and 10,000 virtual computers and is the database recommended for vCenter server unit. Oracle 11g and c 12 external databases are also supported for this version, look for these to drop in the future releases.

It is also possible to keep an existing SQL Express DB when you perform an upgrade:

VMware KB: Upgrade vCenter Server 6.0 without migration of the SQL database to vPostgres

If you use your own SQL server to go with a 64-bit version and stick them on products VMware interoperability Matrices.

  • Locking ESXi 4.1 mode access confirmation no access to the vCenter Server

    Hello

ESXi 4.1.  I see options in conflict with access to a crowd that had lockdown normal mode activated via a server vCenter VM on a host in the cluster.  The vCenter server that sits on one of the hosts in the cluster lockeddown then became inaccessible or unresponsive connectivity wise.  So no connectivity between vCenter VM or VM vCenter and hosts.  Is someone can confirm if you can connect to this host lockedown by DCUI with root and disable lockdown configuration to allow the vSphere client to then connect to the host with root and troubleshoot the server vCenter VM?

I read in some messages that this is only possible if the vCenter VM is in place and the communication to the host.  I also read that it is possible no matter what the State of the vCenter server once Total lockdown (disabling DCUI) is not enabled.

I have this reference of the 'The new lock in ESXi 4.1 Mode' blog http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2010/09/the-new-lockdown-mode-in-esxi-41.html

"With active locking Mode, the only direct access to the host that remains open is through the DCUI. This allows to perform administrative tasks limited outside vCenter Server, such as restarting the management agents and the display of the log files. In addition, you can also disable Mode of Lockdown since the DCUI. This can be useful if vCenter Server is down or unavailable, and you want to return to a direct management of the host. Normally, without locking Mode, any user to the Administrator role can open a session in the DCUI.  However, in lock Mode, the root password is necessary; no other user can connect.

    Can anyone confirm.

Any other person who may not be sure these questions, I can confirm that with root credentials, you can connect to the host directly and disable the lock mode regardless of the availability of vCenter.  Only if the Total lock mode turned on, or should I say DCUI is disabled, then you have no choice but to go through vCenter or reinstall and reconfigure the network.  VM would be always available if local or have to be reassembled and re inventoried etc.

  • VCenter Server Update

In an environment with hosts of ESXi and vCenter server, ESXi 5.0 hosts have been updated to update the 2 just now. Everything works fine, however, Server 2012 64 bit does not appear as an option when you create a virtual computer in vCenter with the vSphere client. Research indicates prerequisites 2 update is necessary to do so, that is applied to the ESXi hosts. The vCenter server has not been updated and it is not possible to still go to U3. ISO has been uploaded to the vCenter update 2 with modules. What is the procedure to update the vCenter server. The update can be checked before hand and guests must stand, so I wanted to just get a sense of the update. What is the executable launched just for the new ISO? The installation as an update or new feature will install? Guests must go down? Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Yes, simply run the installer of vCenter and media when prompted on the vCenter server database, select upgrade the existing vcenter Server database... your virtual machines will not be affected and do not need to be moved to another host.

  • vCenter server VM backup

    Hello!

We are looking for a simple way to save (and possibly restore) our vCenter server, running inside a virtual machine with the database on the same VM. A simple image backup comes to mind. We use Atempo Time Navigator, but the story may be the same for most backup solutions.  There are still a few issues:

    • Do all service vCenter and/or the need for DB to be stopped during the backup of the image, or is properly handled by VSS?  This includes not only the file and database freeze, but also release the transaction logs after backup successful, for example.
    • In case things have to be stopped during the backup, and especially during the restoration, while the vCenter server is stopped for obvious reasons, can I still run backup/restore operations?

    Thank you!

    Mathias

I can't guarantee the VSS interaction with the SQL Express database, but you should be fine. I used various products of backup to create a backup image of the vCenter Server VM with SQL Express and never had any problems with it. Yet once, make sure you just test carefully.
