vCenter server is down and esxi server db server hosting is due

Hello vmware experts,

I hope that you will be able to help me with this problem. Suddenly our vcenter server fails. I discovered that the vcenter Server database server is down. When I look back, the esxi itself host is having a problem.

I already rebooted the esxi. I tried to connect to this host again via vsphere client and at first, he says that it takes too much time to respond (this is the reason for the way I know that the host has a problem) then I restarted the console management officer. This time I was able to connect to the client via vsphere esxi host. Unfortunately, all virtual machines are showing unknown.

assuming that you have shared stored, you can always make a note of what the VCDB VM runs on (even if the guests are unkknow).  To connect to a different host, browse the shared data store and find the VCDB VM, there right click on the .vmx file and add to the inventory.  Then turn the VCDB VM.  You can do the same if your vCenter host is a virtual computer.  Once you get the two VM added to the inventory and power, you will find that things are a little easier to troubleshoot.

    Dear Sirs,

Use a free v5.0 VMware vSphere, ESXi, also an another ESXi hypervisor in test environment free hypervisor v4.1.

    2. after the evaluation of the vCSVA what will happen?, can I continue to manage the hypervisor individually using vSphere Client... ?

Kindly help, even if it is the test environment, but also of significance since the virtual machines on these servers are used as staging environment before deploying/change production application servers.

    Nirvana (VCP5-VTC #147165)

In some versions, it was possible to add hosts with a free license of hypervisor of a vCenter Server in evaluation mode. However, IMO, it was probably more a bug than a feature. If your two hosts are still in the trial period (60 days) you can restore their assessment (delete the assignment the selection of evaluation and license). If this isn't the case, you can contact your VMware reseller or a VMware representative and ask them trial licenses.

After having completed the assessment, removed the vCenter Server hosts and disabled all of the advanced features that are not part of the free version, you should be able to reassign the license.

  • VCenter Server first to 5.5.0U3b update and later update of VMware ESXi ESX / will I have problems?

    Hello

have trouble when I first updated my signature single vCenter Server and later update my vSphere hosts?

A vCenter Server Version 5.5.0U3b should be able to manage vSphere Host Version 5.5.0 GA, right?

    Kind regards

    Roland

The vCenter Server 5.5 update 3 b can manage VMware ESXi ESX release GA to 5.5 5.5 update 3 b, take a look: VMware product interoperability Matrices

BUT, according to the interoperability matrices and vCenter Server 5.5 update 3 release notes, VMware strongly recommends you upgrade your hosts to 5.5 update 3 b, see:

    What's new

    • Update Support for the SSLv3 Protocol is disabled by default
Note: In your vSphere environment, you must update vCenter Server vCenter Server 5.5 update 3 b before the update to 5.5 ESXi ESXi update 3 b. vCenter Server will not be able to manage 3B ESXi 5.5 update, if you update ESXi before update vCenter Server to version 5.5 update 3 b. For more information about the sequence in which vSphere environments must be updated, see KB 2057795.
    • VMware strongly recommends you update ESXi hosts to ESXi 5.5 update 3 b management of vCenter Server 5.5 updated 3B.

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

In order to run the 64-bit clients, you need to enable 'VT - x' in the system BIOS. In addition to this I also recommend you activate "Execute Disable Bit" and - if necessary - disable "VT - d" as well as "Trusted Execution". Once done, save the BIOS settings and the power of the system (power power off) cycle. If this does not resolve the problem, thanks for posting the latest vmware.log of the virtual machine.

  • vCenter Server and Manager on the same virtual machine and on the same host ESXi update that they manage

    Hi all

I have a question to which I did not respond.

I have an ESXi 5 on Proliant DL380 G7 server host. I want to install vCenter Server and Manager Update on one of the Server 2008 R2 VM on the same host. I know it's possible, but my question is how Update manager will provide updates to the same ESXi host it will run on? The update is applied every time host must spend in maintenance mode and power off the virtual computer running on this subject which means he'll kill VM where vCenter Server and Update Manager is running and the update will fail right?

Is that possible at all or the VCS and UM such as a virtual computer operating point is updated to other guests if you have them or vMotion as VM to another host when you want to update the VCS and UM host is running?

    Thanks in advance.

It will not work.  You will need at least two hosts.  This way you can vMotion the vCenter VM to another host.  From there, you can use VUM.  Otherwise, you will need to patch the host as a stand-alone host.

See below for patching a standalone host

  • Locking ESXi 4.1 mode access confirmation no access to the vCenter Server

    Hello

ESXi 4.1.  I see options in conflict with access to a crowd that had lockdown normal mode activated via a server vCenter VM on a host in the cluster.  The vCenter server that sits on one of the hosts in the cluster lockeddown then became inaccessible or unresponsive connectivity wise.  So no connectivity between vCenter VM or VM vCenter and hosts.  Is someone can confirm if you can connect to this host lockedown by DCUI with root and disable lockdown configuration to allow the vSphere client to then connect to the host with root and troubleshoot the server vCenter VM?

I read in some messages that this is only possible if the vCenter VM is in place and the communication to the host.  I also read that it is possible no matter what the State of the vCenter server once Total lockdown (disabling DCUI) is not enabled.

I have this reference of the 'The new lock in ESXi 4.1 Mode' blog http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2010/09/the-new-lockdown-mode-in-esxi-41.html

"With active locking Mode, the only direct access to the host that remains open is through the DCUI. This allows to perform administrative tasks limited outside vCenter Server, such as restarting the management agents and the display of the log files. In addition, you can also disable Mode of Lockdown since the DCUI. This can be useful if vCenter Server is down or unavailable, and you want to return to a direct management of the host. Normally, without locking Mode, any user to the Administrator role can open a session in the DCUI.  However, in lock Mode, the root password is necessary; no other user can connect.

    Can anyone confirm.

Any other person who may not be sure these questions, I can confirm that with root credentials, you can connect to the host directly and disable the lock mode regardless of the availability of vCenter.  Only if the Total lock mode turned on, or should I say DCUI is disabled, then you have no choice but to go through vCenter or reinstall and reconfigure the network.  VM would be always available if local or have to be reassembled and re inventoried etc.
