VCenter, update 4.0 and 5.1 query

We have 2 cluster esx 4.0 and upgrade to ESXi 5.1 + a physical server running Vcenter

I have to add a new host ESXi 5.1 to this cluster, then move the computer virtual and upgrade other hosts 2 as well

How should I start?

1. I know my host servers and ISCSI SAN is in the compatibility list

2 upgrade V-Center to 5.1, however more forums said some questions:

http://communities.VMware.com/thread/428382

3 Add the new 5.1 ESXI host and go...

So should I I first upgraded V-Center to a more recent version, further improvements will be another weekend 2-3

New v-Center will work with host new and old simultaneouly?

or can there be a better plan.

Thank you

Here you can check the supported upgrade paths:

If your vCenter 4.0 is running on a 64-bit server, just put it in the ISO vCenter 5.1 installation and run the installation programs, they're going to do an upgrade. As always, read the guidelines of upgrade and to make a backup of the database before you perform the upgrade are a good idea

  • Update Server VC and 5.5 ESXi hosts to update 3 b (Build 3248547)

I'm in vCenter Server 5.5 and 5.5 ESXi hosts.  Both are updated 3A, patched to version 201510001, which is the build 3116895.  I plan the upgrade of update 3 b (Build 3248547) and I'm a little confused on the question of SSLv3.

I wonder if this point below ESXi55 U3b & VC 55U3b Known Issues applies to my config:

ESXi does not automatically added to the inventory of the vCenter servers
If you install an earlier version of vCenter Server and vSphere Update Manager for ESXi 5.5 updated 3B, then after the task of sanitation, ESXi does not automatically added to the VC inventory. Remediation process never gets done and ESXi State of connection in the VC inventory is presented as disconnected. Solution: When you restart ESXi after reorganization process is started, enable SSLv3 on ESXi (which is disabled by default). This will ensure that ESXi is added to the VC inventory automatically in minutes and sanitation as completed.

If I'm reading things correctly, upgrade to vCenter Server to 3 b first and then upgrade the ESXi hosts, will avoid lost communication problems.  Can anyone confirm?

It should be good if you update vCenter first.

The problem is that pre - U3b vCenter 5.5 forces an SSLv3 connection when connecting to an ESXi host on port 443 (not the reverse). It does this, even if the host ESXi and vCenter SSL/TLS libraries actually support TLS 1.0 + since at least vSphere 4.0.

So when you update one host to 5.5 U3b, the oldest vCenter again will try to force a connection SSLv3 that will fail, since SSLv3 has been disabled to the host. If you're updating vCenter, first of all, it will initiate a good TLS 1.0 + connection to more similar and updated hosts.

Here is an explanation of the (pre - U3b) vCenter SSLv3 handshake behavior:

  • vCenter Update Manager install confusion

I'm finally getting around to installing vCenter Update Manager for our environment vSphere 4.1, but I'm having a nightmare of a time to settle.  VCenter is installed on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit server, my SQL box is MS SQL 2005 installed on an old Windows 2003 64-bit server.

Went in several circles between SQL 32 bit DSN, ODBC 64-bit drivers and the unauthorized download service must be installed on the same server as the Update Manager.  When you run the installation on my vCenter server, I get the following message:

The vCenter Server is incompatible with the VMware vCenter Update Manager you install.  Please select a compatible Server vCenter.

At this point I don't yet really if I get it to talk to our SQL Server or not.  I want just the installed software.  If anyone knows what's the magic combination to get everything going, I would really appreciate the info.

hope that the 4.1 version of the vCenter server. In this case, if the version of the 4.1 Update Manager must be installed with the hassle. If the server vCeneter is 4.1 and Manager Update 41U1/U2, then installation will fail with the above error. 41U1 is not comaptible with 41 VC. Please refer to the software compatibility guide. http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/R40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.PDF

  • VUM - vCenter Update/upgrade to level host w/o vMotion?

We hab a laboratory and the environment in which we would like to test vCenter Update Manager. We have Crossover installed on vCenter-VM.

A fundamental question is whether you can update/upgrade to level the host that runs the vCenter-VM and without vMotion. I would tend to say no if a patch requires the host in maintenance mode, but perhaps that staging feature a more differentiated response.

    I'm curious of your answers

A fundamental question is whether you can update/upgrade to level the host that runs the vCenter-VM and vMotion

That's right, you can not switch from a host using VUM if you vCenter VM resides on that host.  If you do not you can do a few things of vMotion.  Take note of your vCenter VM and host running the VM vCenter datastore.  Then connect directly to the host where your vCenter VM, it turns off, remove the inventory.  Then open a session on a different host, browse the data store and add the vCenter VM inventory and turn on.

Once the vCenter THAT VM is powered on a different host, you can patch the other host using AUVS.  Otherwise you have to patch the host as a stand-alone host.

  • vCenter Update Manager 4.1

I'm sorry for the silly question, but I'm at my wits end, trying to find the installer for Update Manager 4.1

I am running 4.0 ESXi and vSphere 4.0 and I'm trying to update the hosts to ESXi 4.1 using the Update Manager, but it seems that I can't do it until I update the server vCenter Update Manager 4.1. I believe that I have improved vCenter successfully, but I understand that I will not be able to actually run the 4.1 client until I have a crowd of 4.1 running. :/

Can someone please provide the link to download Update Manager 4.1 extension?

    Thank you

VUM is provided with/in the media of vCenter.

  • Where should I install VMWare vCenter Update Manager?

I have a client vSphere VM (Windows XP), vCenter VM (Win 2003) and 6 Linux server VM on my ESXi server.

Should I avoid installing Update Manager on a virtual computer on the ESXi server, or if it is not serious?

I prefer to install on my client vSphere VM, but not sure that this has disadvantages because both the ESXi to-be-implementation to date and the VM Updater-Manager would be the same physical machine.

Even if the Update Manager is the preferred method, with the environment, you have (1 host, 6 VMs) I would consider updating the host manually (using vihostupdate) and don't even bother with the installation of Update Manager.

  • vCenter update manager install - vcenter server isn't compatible?

I try to install vcenter update manager.  I tried the two 4.0 update 1 and 4.0 Update 2.  Both give me an error in the first step of the installation when I specify our vcenter server, port, username, etc.  He states:

"vcenter server is incompatible with the vmware vcenter update manager that you are installing.

We run vcenter 4.1.0 (build 258902).  I can't find any information on this error.  Was hoping to find an answer here before opening a SR with vmware.

If you use vCenter 4.1, you must install VUM 4.1, which can be located on the vCenter installation CD in the folder updateManager.  VCenter is a 64-bit application, VUM is not and still requires a 32-bit DSN.

  • NIC lost after upgrade to vCenter Update 2

We run IBM HS21XM blades using vSphere4 Enterprise license.  We have just updated to vCenter 4 Update 2 and once we were back in the console, one of our blades lost a network card.  It is not in the "esxcfg-NICS - l" command and the vCenter shows just one and nothing to add.  My blade chassis switches show two connected network cards and more.

Besides maybe restart the blade is there any other command I can run to see if the NETWORK card somehow got stop at the level of the BONE?

    Thank you.

I had such a situation or twice. Reboot the host always helped.

  • VMware vCenter Update Manager Client installation fails

I have a system that has been upgraded to ESX 3.5 to vSphere and installed successfully the vSphere Client, can see my hosts and virtual machines without any problem.  I install the plugin VM converter, but when I try to install the plugin Update Manager it fails every time.

I'm installing on a 64-bit Windows 7 computer (my laptop is also Win7 64 bit and it installed successfully there).  I tried to install the application and get the error message in the Windows application logs:

Product: VMware vCenter Update Manager Client - Setup cannot continue. VMware vSphere Client is not found to be installed on this computer. VMware vCenter Update Manager Client can be installed only on machines where VMware vSphere Client is present.

I've already entered my store of % TEMP % and tried to install just the exe file (VMware - UMClient.exe) and who is not, I copied the extracted files, including all the files .ini, .bmp, .msi and .mst to the root of my C drive and tried installing from there.  All this provided the same failure.

During the installation, I get this message first indicating the location of my vSphere Client installation:

When I click on the only 'real' installation option, then spend a few seconds and then I get this message:

    http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/9022/install2.png

Click ok and then get a message saying that the installation has failed.

I managed to do install finally.

The strange solution was that I had to log on as an administrator of my machine and then install the plugin.  Even if my account is an administrator account.

Anyway, problem solved, works perfectly and am clean now.

  • I cann't vcenter update manager...

    Hi all

I have 4 standard installed on Win2K3 server vcenter. I see no option for vcenter update manager under plugins installed or available in the plugin Manager. How to do it?

have you installed VUM?  It is not installed by default.  I do not have the beam ISO vcenter in front of me, but if you browse the ISO/DVD you will find a folder Update Manager.

We usually install VUM on a separate virtual computer and create a new instance of the DB, but it can be shared with your VCDB if you need to

  • Passage of 3.5u3 in vSphere4 - Question on vCenter Update Manager

    Morning all,

We watch move from 3.5u3 to 4 and have never installed vCenter Update Manager (updates manual favorite).

Reading upgrade procedures he explains how we can improve the cluster (5 esx servers) to 4 using the Update Manager.

I was wondering which is the best way to go (the upgrade will not place outside office hours so no confusing our users)

    (1) install Update Manager (relevant version for 3.5u3) now (this allows us to provide fully functional)

    (2) install the Update Manager (version 3.5u3) on Saturday morning, just before the upgrade

    (3) install Update Manager v4 (new now allowing time to test)

    (4) install Update Manager v4 on Saturday morning, just before the upgrade

The reason to ask, I have very little knowledge of the update manager and the last thing I really want is ad-hoc updates applied (as the updates of windows). I'm guessing the number 3 is the best option in this way I can test and have fully functional before necessary - but prefer to get the opinion of those who could have a better understanding.

    TIA

Use vCenter Server 4.0 (U1) and the new AUVS.
