Passage of 3.5u3 in vSphere4 - Question on vCenter Update Manager

Morning all,

We watch move from 3.5u3 to 4 and have never installed vCenter Update Manager (updates manual favorite).

Reading upgrade procedures he explains how we can improve the cluster (5 esx servers) to 4 using the Update Manager.

I was wondering which is the best way to go (the upgrade will not place outside office hours so no confusing our users)

(1) install Update Manager (relevant version for 3.5u3) now (this allows us to provide fully functional)

(2) install the Update Manager (version 3.5u3) on Saturday morning, just before the upgrade

(3) install Update Manager v4 (new now allowing time to test)

(4) install Update Manager v4 on Saturday morning, just before the upgrade

The reason to ask, I have very little knowledge of the update manager and the last thing I really want is ad-hoc updates applied (as the updates of windows). I'm guessing the number 3 is the best option in this way I can test and have fully functional before necessary - but prefer to get the opinion of those who could have a better understanding.

TIA

Use vCenter Server 4.0 (U1) and the new AUVS.

  • question of vCenter edition license + distributed switch

    Hello

I want to clarifiy on vCenter license I have and what is it supposed to cover.

    Background:

I bought the VI3 VirtualCenter license company a year ago. I upgraded the server vCenter vSphere4 a few weeks ago, and apply the code key that I found in my account on VMware.com. Up to present, so good, but he says my license VI3 VC has been converted with vSphere Standard.

The ESX servers are 4.0 enterprise.

-In looking at vsphere_pricing.pdf it seems now I have many features available, they are offered as advanced or Enterprise editions.

In the table below, I did few features "BOLD" I see clearly available and who are supposed to be higher than the standard packages.

Thus my confusion is - what license actually did I? Standard, as it says in the vCenter or higher license tab since obviously there are available features, which should not be in the standard?

    vSphere Standard includes:

    • VMware ESXi and VMware ESX (choice of the time of the deployment) 2

    • VMware vStorage VMFS

    • Four-way virtual SMP

    • VMware vCenter Server Agent

    • VMware vStorage API / VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)

    • VMware Host Profiles

Now the 2nd question (maybe I should have separated these, but I feel somehow it can be bound to the first)-when I create a distributed switch, the tab "hosts" is empty. I right click and select "add the host to the virtual switch distributed", but even once it gives me a window with no host has chosen.

Is a licensing issue or config problem?

If you have company VI3 then he improved to vSphere Enterprise.  And according to the characteristics you describe below, it looks like Enterprise license, that's what is activated in vCenter.  If you click on licenses in vCenter (Home\Administration\Licensing), see your Enterprise vSphere licenses?

Regarding distributed switches, this option is available in vSphere Enterprise Plus then you will not be able to use. If you need the functionality of Enterprise Plus there is a promotion running until December 15, which allows you to update your enterprise license to Enterprise Plus licenses for a significant discount.  You should talk with your dealer on this subject if you are interested...

  • Question design and update

    Hello community,

I have a following question design and update on vSphere 6 with MRS.

In out of our subsidiaries, we have configured following installation:

-VMware vSphere 5.5 environment with Site Recovery Manager that runs on 5.8 installed U3.
-Two vCenter server running in a configuration in linked mode, so you only need access to a vCenter server to see both sides.

No, we want to upgrade to vSphere 6 and here I have some question how says it in the best conditions.
Wouldn't be a good thing or maybe it's mandatory to have a service of external platform controller installed in the vSphere environment and then start the upgrade to vSphere 6 each side has its 'own' PSC.

Thanks for some tips and training on your side.

Did you read the documentation regarding the upgrade to SRM 6 located here: Site Recovery Manager 6.0 Documentation Center

Who will answer all you questions, including your subject to PSC. A short summary, you want a PSC for each site. The reason is that you want that each site to be completely independent of the other.

If read you the docs and you still have questions, please post them.

  • General question about the updates and version number

I have a general question about versions and update.  I'm new on this and am in the deep end of learning I want.

In vSphere web client, I see the following versions (these are exactly as the seller, he left a few months that I have screenshots in my documentation that match)

    Version - VMware ESXi, 5.1.0 1612806

    Profile - Dell (updated) ESXi - 5.1 - 799733 (A00)

I am trying to familiarize themselves with the Update Manager and I noticed that there are a lot of patches and updates available.

Lists of Update Manager 5 patches as "Missing" with Red x but directly above them are a list of patches with green tick indicating that "installed" - it is perhaps obvious, but im guessing 'installed' means really installed when displayed on the screen - there is an update installed, labeled "ESXI 5.1 all the update 2-' would be able to tell that it has been installed by the details of profile/version above?

I don't think it's a big deal at this stage, but if I install all missing patches and then the details of the version/profile change in summary screen?

    I hope this makes sense.

    Thank you

  • I have a question about the ESXi upgrade using Update Manager...

This is probably a stupid question, but I've never played and update ESXi using Update Manager.  We need to update ESXi ESXi 4.1 4.1 servers before vCenter 5.0 U1 from U2 (there is a known issue where the ESXi 4.1 servers receive the GROUP after upgrading vCenter to 5.0 U1).  We used HP ESXi image to install ESXi on our servers for new installations.  This image contains ESXi.1 U2 as well as the drivers of HP and CIM.

    4.1_U2_Oct_2011_ESXi_HD - USB-SDImgeInstlr_Z7550 - 00241.iso

Can this same image HP ESXi 4.1 U2 that we used to install to new ESXi servers, be used to upgrade our 4.1 4.1 U2 ESXi servers using the Update Manager?  Or, upgrade package should be used for the upgrade?  Also, if an upgrade package must be used, is it OK to use one provided by VMware, or will be losing our HP specific drivers and CIM to do this?

    Thank you

    Hello

You can import custom HP ESXi 4.1 U2 ISO in Update Manager (don't forget to use the latest version of June 2012, available here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM06) and update the hosts with her.

In a second step, you can then import the last custom HP ESXi ISO 5.0 (available here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM09) and update the hosts again with her.

To be on the current ESXi 5.0 patch level you finally apply the latest patches from VMware via the Update Manager.

  • Question on Update Manager (classified "Available path")

    Hi all:

I have a dummy question: what is him classified 'Patch available' means in the Update Manager?

I found nothing in the documentation...

    Thank you

    Olegarr

I could be wrong, but perhaps he says true or false, because these fixes are available in your repository to update.

When was the last time your VMware Update Manager download update ran?

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5U1 to 3.5U3 by using Update Manager

I'm almost finished upgrading all our servers ESX 3.02 to 3.5 update 1 more a few patches.

This was done by booting from the CD to update 1 3.5 to perform the upgrade.

I had a basleine created in the update manager that includes all fixes releaed in June 2008 or earlier. This base was also used on all of our ESX servers.

I now want to use the Update Manager to upgrade all servers to 3.5.0 update 3 and the latest patches.

If I have a base line that includes all the updates that are never out, can I just clean up the hosts on this base? The upgrade process will be "smart" enough to just install update 3 and latest patches or will be installed all the patches in sequence include the update 2 which I suppose is not necessary if the update 3 is also being installed?

Should I create a baseline containing the 3 updated and any update since then. Update 3 includes other updates also published November 6?

Note that I'm under 104215 virtual Center version but will be upgrading to update 3 before upgrading the hosts.

Our Update Manager database was created when the Update Manager is out and includes all updates, including ESX Server 3.5.0 Update 2 updated with the question of the "ticking time bomb".

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Hello

I'm never live from 3.0.1 to U1 and U3. Always fresh, I installed 3.5 and then improved from there. However your approach should work perfectly as well. I wouldn't get to frustrated with VUM as him starts and stops and the issue of sanitation occur due to the circles of interesting dependence and bugs squarely in the process of upgrading some of the improvements. I often force ESX in Maintenance mode to install the updates. It depends usually if VMware HA is enabled, or VMS must be evacuated. I tend to evacuate all virtual machines running by hand, then perform upgrades.

  • Satellite A100-998: several question mark in Device Manager

    Hello.

I hope someone can help me. I recently bought a 2nd hand A100-998. When I boot it I have several '' mark points '' on various points: Ethernet controller, mass storage controller, network controller, sm bus controller and video controller (vga compatiable).

I also have a message once the machine starts who says: the ATI Control Panel could not initialize because no ATI driver is installed, or the ATI driver does not work correctly. The ATI Control Panel will now stop.

The computer also says its new hardware found (all the controller ethernet etc.) but
I have no disc driver for these and can't find.

I think the problem is that my restore disk on a windows XP Home Edition, and it seems that the system must be windows media edition. Y at - there someone out there who knows what I can do or any other solution to solve this problem.

    Thank you.

    Hi David

All this yellow question mark appear due to lack and not installed drivers.
You must install all the drivers compatible and available, and you will get rid of all these issues.

On the Toshiba driver page, you will find all drivers XP for PSAA9E A100. Your A100-998 is one of the PSAA9E series then visit the page of European driver of Toshiba and download all the available drivers and tools.

In addition, you should take a look in the installation instructions document. This document tells you the right installation order!
The order of installation of good pilots is important and necessary.

    Good luck

  • Question 1.9 updated Bios of M50 due to multiple issues on 1.7

    Hello

I have a Satellite M50-196, I received a few weeks ago and I've known a lot of problems. The current version of the Bios on the laptop is 1.7 and the bios to M50 series page, I see that there is a version 1.9.

I had to remove XP home and installed my copy of XP Pro with Service Pack 2. Everything went great. Everything works perfectly except a few questions. Here goes:

-First wireless adapter has some kind of problem because when I connect to my home network from time to time I run repair the connection on windows because it is really slow. I have a connection of 4 MB cable at home and he usually runs to 400 k. ut has from time to time completely stops and starts again after a few seconds and a few other times gets as slow as 40 k. It is not a question of cable provider or a question wireless base station because I have a desktop computer that uses wireless also without any problems. This happens with the laptop connected to the power supply or running on batt. I have the latest drivers from Intel 2200BG wireless card.

-The second problem is when I close the screen. The laptop should go on stand-by but rather never sleep light turns orange and the laptop is completely locked. The power button remains blue, light it even after that leaving the button for several seconds (15-20) or no laptop computer shutsdown. The only way to solve the problem is to remove the battery completely and fastener is again.

-The third and last problem, so far, is with Virtual PC 2004 SP1. Virtual machines run very slowly, and the use of processos is most of the time at 99%. Time on a virtual PC is faster than normal, then it blocks completely and start again. For example 10 seconds will in 5 seconds then he crashes a few seconds. This behavior seems to occur with more people using computers laptops centrino with 915 chipset and some manufactors already corrected cela. A guy on another forum has reported that it has fixed a DELL laptop with a recent update of the bios.

So because all these I'm considering upgrading to version 1.9 of the bios, but before I do, I would like to know if anyone had problems with this upgrade and would also like to know if its safe to run the bios from windows update. I know that its supposed to be sure, but I would like to know if anyone has ever reported problems with it and what precautions should I take... for instance... it is important to remove the bios and the hard drive passwords?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post :)

    Best regards

    Hello

If you have some problems with the 2200 BG WLan card so try to install the latest driver on the Intel site.
    http://downloadfinder.Intel.com/scripts-DF-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1637&lang=eng

    What Bios:
Sometimes the BIOS update can solve a lot of strange problems. But make sure that the incorrect BIOS procedure may damage the motherboard. Before you begin this procedure, all passwords must be disabled and AC adapter / CC must be plugged.

I'm not sure about the question of the virtual machine. It s a 3rd party software and it of not easy to tell if the update of the BIOS can solve it.

Please post if you have updated the BIOS

    Hi all

I am updating to 8.0 8.5.1 and have a few questions:

    1. the drivers I installed in 8.0, I guess they must be installed again to 8.5.1 version correct? Simply install these drivers OR again since the 8.5.1 disc? Is there something I need to watch out for?

2 8.0 are automatically deleted after installing 8.0 or I have to delete manually?

    3. after the update 8.5.1, wait not much difficulties in the management of the screw that I created in law 8.0?

It'll be all for now... thank you all for your help!

    1. Yes. No problem

2 no. I suggest that you not remove any, where you need. Just don't use it.

  • Question about Windows Update in Windows 7 links.

Whenever I have run or click on the links to Windows Update to update my workstation at work I usually click the links on the left under the heading Control Panel home.  When I click on it it says "Windows is up-to-date.

This morning, I clicked on the 'check online for updates from Microsoft Update' and found about 20 updates of security necessary to my machine.  My question is, what is the difference between checking the updates link in the Control Panel Home section and check online for updates from Microsoft Update?

Verification of updates link goes to a SCCM server only?  Just curious.

Brother and sisters all the place!

This morning, I clicked on the 'check online for updates from Microsoft Update' and found about 20 updates of security necessary to my machine.

After doing the above, you have now "reversed" your source of default update from Windows Update to Microsoft Update.

What are the differences between Windows updates and automatic updates from Microsoft Updates?

While Windows Update provides updates specifically for Windows, Microsoft Update expands the service to download and install updates for other software from Microsoft, such as Microsoft Office and Windows Live. Update automatic is a feature that allows you to configure your PC to automatically download and install updates using each service, making it easy and convenient for you to keep your current Windows PC.

    Source: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/windowsupdate/FAQ.mspx

Translation: Now the automatic updates (and controls running manual updates) will provide updates for Windows and office, Silverlight, Windows Live Essentials, etc..
