• Installing vcenter 5 new questions (linked SQL)

  Number of steps 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the "Configure Microsoft SQL Server databases" section of the "vSphere Installation and configuration - vSphere 5.0.pdf" illustrate the attached jpg.  I believe you need to execute steps 2 and 5 or 3 and 4 steps.  Any input on that?  Have a chat with our SQL resources and his first impressions are that you must perform steps 2, 3, 4 and 5 to set up the database for vCenter 5.

  steps 2-5 are just different methods on how to create permissions. They are all really with the same determination.

• NFS - Vcenter/vSphere 4.1 performance statistics

  Hi all

  Just upgraded a vSphere installation 4.0 to 4.1. It runs on a datastore NFS that I am interested by the new features in version 4.1 to view stats NFS. Although I can't seem to find these, someone can tell where I can find these in vCenter?

  NFS statistics are found in the "Data store" section of the advanced performance tab and in the 'peripheral disc' stats (press U) within esxtop.

• VCenter Unattended Installation - problems INSTALLDIR

  I have been using the published PDF which gives powerful assistance vCenter unattended installs the server: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vcenter_server_cmdline_install.pdf

  I have this job for the most part, but a part does not work, and I think I have nailed to the INSTALLDIR switch for the individual MSI files.

  For example, this command does not work (it does appear the msi help window):

  However, simply removing the switch INSTALLDIR allows for installation to occur, for example

  The PDF to think that this option is available.  In addition, I tested the switch in place without spaces and without quotation marks, so it doesn't seem to be a character double-quotes/exhaust problem. I am also using quotes and characters for passwords exhaust etc so do that...

  Personally, I'm surprised that it works, but it's cool, I'm still learning - I'll try and look a little more information about quotes, spaces and the behavior of the variables when it is passed to a cmdlet.

• What are the steps to upgrade to vCenter/vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 to vCenter/vSphere 5.5 Standard?

  We currently have VMWare Essentials Plus on 3 hosts, with 2 processors each. We wanted to add 2 more ESX host, so we improved our standard for vCenter/vSphere license to version 5.5. We try to find the best possible route to install 5.5 on the hosts and upgrade the server vCenter Server with our new version of the granting of licenses and software. The best initial step would be to apply the new license in the current framework 5.0 hosts and vCenter server and then upgrade the software 1 by 1? Or apply the new license to our current Server vCenter, pgrade to 5.5 server and then upgrade each host? Our Dell Rep gave me this guide (updated for VMware vSphere, Cloud Computing for companies of all sizes |) United States) and mentioned if we need assistance, contact VMWare.

  Any guidance would be appreciated.

  5.0 and 5.5 must use the same keys. Then start by adding the new license key to your vCenter server then you are able to manage more than 3 guests.

  Next step would be to update the server vCenter to 5.5 so it can handle actually 5.5 hosts.

  Subsequently you would update the hosts.

  Host licenses can also be replaced at any time during this process, because they are also specific 5.x version.

  Theoretical you could even stay on 5.0 and simply replace licenses if they are not a sort of special license keys.

  I built this different ways now, and I still get this same exact error. I spin as 'Admin' and I have so any available privilege.

  I am able to use this model for Centos on my computer actually install and build a paralytic with centos on that - unfortunately I do a

  hacks to make it work properly and I cannot get it to install other real applications (perhaps there is a new version for workstation 10?)

  So I went to vsphere, and I KNOW my generation model is ok, at least to get the installed operating system.

  OK, I have a build that WORKED, now I see what you mean about watching build/deploy the VM guest.

  Here is the solution to my problem: our vcenter uses names with spaces, we also use the domain names for our connections. In addition, each admin password was 'special characters', that I've debugged meticulously by ALL of them and much more. Basically, it did not matter that I have "URL" code things, used new tools or edited different scripts to encode things one way or another.

  What finally gave us successes was to go to a 'clean' Vcenter implementation that

  (a) use/did not require a domain name (not / credentials)

  (b) all had the "BACK original' legal names, IE no spaces, no special characters, etc..

  (c) the passwords contained NO "special characters".

  (because I changed this way, 'URL' encoding didn't work, tried it)

  Moral of the story: building a new, simply configured Vcenter or get one and use it.

  (Note: I even downloaded a new ovftool and tried every way that I could but it did not success)

  I try a new installation of vCenter and encounter a problem around the service accounts.

  The "use account system;" the 'User name' field is grayed out when you try to install it and I can't select a different Service account.

  This happens on vSphere 4.1 and 4.0 Update 1.

  Installing vCenter Server using a specific service account, you must log on to the server by using the account that you use to run services vCenter.

  The vCenter Server Setup does not select a specific service account when you perform the installation.

  Additionally, make sure that the account that you use to install vCenter Server (service account) has rights of a local administrator on the server.

  I have attached a screenshot where you can see that I am using the account "vmware.sql".  I connect to the server using this account, and that have administrative rights on this server.

  After reinstall Agent for the 15 th time and wait for about 10 minutes of frustration, it works, I n believe in miracles, but here's the evidence, what I've done:

  Reinstall the name of different Agent than on complete installation

  Recreate the different name endpoint of that on complete installation

  Check all the newspapers of the time

  Place the account that I use for vCAC as the local administrator in vCenter Server

  Reboot identity SSO the vCAC App

  reload the credentials and to recreate endpoint config I mena on vCAC as infrastructure admin.

  Make a backup of your DB vCenter, proceed with the installation of vCenter5.  Then, you can use VMware Update Manager to upgrade your ESXi hosts.  However, I would choose to do a reconstruction of working capital. vSphere5 is a major release.

  My question is based on 1 single step in installing vCenter. The part of the installation that I have a question about is the destination directories. In this step, it gives you the option to use the default directory or change the directory where the server vCenter Server is installed. Then just below that is the ability to change the directory data for the vCenter Server server are installed too. My question is when he says data do you mean virtual machines? I ask because I have little space to work with the vCenter Server alone. If the data for the vCenter server means computer virtual vhd then I can change that to a SAN that has at least 5-6 to a value space.

  The vCenter Server allocates any virtual machine inside the disks.

  This means installation vCenter only data. You point where the virtual machine is preserved when you create a new virtual machine (normally on storage)

  I had a similar situation, and while I found a few ways to use enhanced bound mode with incorporated the PSC, it is not technically supported by VMware.

  However, I have deployed two new external to the PSC (two sites) and two VCSA w/o the embedded PSC.  I joined all in the same domain.

  Once it was in place, I improved my previous VCSA, who had the PSC on-board, to 6.0 U1 and used the new option repoint via CMSSO-UTIL to point of the VCSA existing on the same domain than the one I just created with two new external to the PSC.  I was then able to migrate everything to the two new vCenters.

  Looks like more work that it is, and the result is a nice clean environment, no down time to VM and two external to the PSC which reproduce and two VCSA who linked enhnaced active mode.
