Move cluster configured with replication SRM and Vsphere

All,

We go 2 groups in the near future to achieve a geographical distance between the 2 sites.

A cluster is equipped with VMware 5.0 replication SRM and vSphere and the other cluster running VMware 5.5 and SRM in combination with replication of vSphere.

What is the best way to move these clusters, I must stop the replication or interrupt the replication process and are these action to perform on SRM or we need to perform any action on the virtual machine itself?

I read that a stop is setting the State to not configured including destroy all files in the target directory.

Does anyone have an experience by physically moving a cluster managed by SRM (and replication of vSphere)

Any help is welcome

Thank you

    Hello

I would like some advice on vCentre4 with ESX3.5 and vSphere 4U1. We currently have 4 ESX3.5 Ent. servers (16CPU lic.) and v2.5U1 vCentre UAT environment, we are trying to replace the migration to vSphere 4U1.

Unfortunately last weekend our vCentre 2.5U1 server crashed without possible repair, and since we are in the process of upgrading would rebuild Win2k8 and SQL2k5 servr to vCentre 4U1 th at the same time, we are going to change servers ESX3.5 to ESXi 4 (free version) and install 4U1 vSphere 4 new production servers.

Our plan is to first upgrade to vSphere 4U1 2 servers, then followed by the other 2 servers a few months later. There are a few things that I need help to clarify:

    1. after reinstallation of vCentre4 licensing to vCentre 4 supports a mixture of ESX3.5 Ent and vSphere.

    2. If I detach my the vCentre ESX3.5 servers and also to remove the lic. of the ESX 3.5 How many days the ESX can run before the ICA. expires - is it being treated as a version of evaluation and the ICA. lasts for 60 days.

3 or if not can I keep my ESX3.5 connected with the vCentre but remove the lic. for the 2 vCentre ESX and how the days can work before the ICA. expires and that our servers cannot connect to the vCentre.

    4. I've heard - we have not installed vCentre4 but the software/module license on vCentre4 (vSphere) is different from what the 2.5 vCentre (ESX3.5) how can keep my lic. on the operation of ESX can I just install the vCentre 2.5 lic. more module on the server of vCentre for lic. vSphere and ESX3.5

I'm not sure that understand the issues above.  You need vCenter4 to manage the host ESX (i).  vCenter4 can manage VI3 hosts, but vCenter2.5 can't handle ESX(I) 4 guests.

You can install stand-alone if you wish. http://downloads.VMware.com/d/details/esx_35_licenseserver_dt/dGViZGVoKmIqZA==

No, a crowd can be handled by one instance of vCenter.

It seems that EVA communicates very well with the Sra So. now, you need to scan for the SRA in SRM and then try to perform the replication again. If she fails to perform replication with the SRM then you will need to contact the VMware team, because that would be a problem with the SRM and not a problem with the EVA contacting the SRA.

  • On the replication SRM 5.5 and vsphere

    Hi guys,.

using Mrs. 5.5 and replication of vsphere can I do a first replica of virtual machine with a manual copy or clone on the remote site and after synchronization with replication or srm vsphere virtual machine?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

I assume that when the source of the VM is turned on, the disks (-flat.vmdk files) are locked and that's the reason to download drives while the virtual machine is turned off.

The virtual machine can be powered on once the disc has been downloaded/copied.

An alternative approach, if you have enough free space on the source website - you can clone the virtual machine, without any power off and download the clone disks.

The clone operation may change the value of ddb.uuid in hard files. Make sure that it matches the value in the hard of source files and if not, change it manually. Another configuration of replication will fail if this value does not match.

    Kind regards

  • SRM with vSphere Enterprise and vSphere Advanced

    Hello

I saw the FAQ license RS saying that SRM requires no vSphere all be of the same edition and features will be affected by which edition is used.

Which raises a number of questions in my mind.  For example if my environment is as such:

    • Production site with multiple ESX using Enterprise Plus with Nexus 1000V
    • Recovery site with several ESX using Advanced edition
    • Enough to set up for two sites license SRM and vCenter

I guess that network should not much question, as I can manually map the port network group on the recovery plan.

    So my questions:

    1. Can I configure manually this ESX made uses SRM for commissioning virtual machines running the recovery plan?
      • I don't have a DRS on the DR site to distribute virtual machines and use all the resources.
    2. What happens when SRM tries to start a virtual machine with more than 4vCPU in the DR site?
      • Advance Edition limited my VMs to 4vCPU

    See you soon,.
    Isabelle

Your correct indeed neglected the advanced part, DRS is not supported. But another question for you: do you only use the equipment have the Dr site for DR purposes or you also make use of the material for other purposes as for example the test? Is it not that you can always create a business case to buy a license of the company and use the site of recovery for test purposes. In case a disaster occurs and a failover is invoked, you can add stimulus to stop your test virtual machines on the recovering site, before the SRM protected VM. This way make you full use of all the material on the protégé and the recovering site.

Looking at your question again, it makes me think. If you create a cluster on the recovering site and map this cluster cluster on the protected site. All virtual machines that are protected will be started on the cluster during failover. OK you won't have DRS so resources are not distributed on the hosts, but they run and computers vMotion virtual host to another, you can manually.

Point which is that you want to map individual VMS to ESX host, making your your design SRM very complex and difficult to maintain. Rather go for mapping clusters and take account of the fact that you have to manually virtual computers vMotion between host computers to create a balanced distribution of resources (or buy some DRS). It makes your life a lot easier.

  • Using NetApp SRA with vSphere SRM and suspension

    Hello!

My understanding is that SnapMirror is no suspension, so as a result, you will only get consistent backups fail?

My question is, when you use the NetApp storage replication adapter in Site Recovery Manager, you now get supported in standby, as MRS can work alongside the matrix to orchestrate the recovery correctly?

    See you soon,.

    Bilal

Necessary for suspension of application with NetApp NetApp SnapManager.

SRM does not add any capabilities of demand for NetApp mise en veille (or another provider of table). SRM monitoring, can trigger and in some cases reverse replication, but it is not change/impact how replication is running.

If you perform a scheduled migration (or a failover of DR and MRS can communicate with servers SRM & vCenter protected site), SRM will replicate storage, turn off the system VMs graciously and then happen again so it is not necessary in these cases of app-compatible replication.

    Does that answer your questions?

  • Restore with replication of vSphere

    Hello

We use SRM 5.1 with replication of vSphere.

I'm trying to get a rough idea of how long a reprotect operation would take after a failover, especially synchronization of storage.

    The manual says that:

"The full synchronization that appears especially in the stages of recovery performs control totals, and only a small amount of data is transferred over the network."

However in my testing this step still seems to take a long time to complete.  For a person of 50 GB, it takes 40 minutes.  My question is: what is the bottleneck here and I can speed things up?

In a live scenario, I have much larger comments VMs and I fear that a reprotect could take days to synchronize the storage.

    Thank you

    Steve

The full synchronization bed basically just for the disk data and checksum data. It also makes requests to read the data and return a set of checksums remotely. He would only send the data if the checksums do not match. Thus, assuming that not many disk changed, there is very little except checksum travel over the network. So you will respect especially how fast you can read files vmdk on both sites and to a lesser extent by the latency of the network between the sites, and, of course, if the link between the sites remains upward.

Check if the link to the sites is good. Get often ignored or not connections are limited somehow? The latency is extremely high, as hundreds of milliseconds? This can slow things down.

On the source site, make sure that the storage is not overloaded with other work. In the case of NAS/ISCSI, check also that there is no other work of network hogging bandwidth. Sometimes, there are periodic offers on secondary sites, like backups, and that people often forget this can be a lot of resources.

On the destination site, carry out similar checks and make sure that the server VR is to get a reasonable amount of network and CPU resources.

  • Celerra + SRM and Replication manager

Hi do anyone knows if its possible to integrate EMC replication manager a Celerra ISCSI / MRS. configuration?

Replication Manager / SE, I read integrates with Virtual Center, puts the virtual machines in snapshot mode (kind of like the fact of vcb) and then starts the replication to ensure that everything is in order, I also thought with the module for VMware tools with 3.5 update 2 part tools VSS should quiese SQL and make sure that its happy before the virtual machine put in snapshot mode.

I know with my current Celerra/SRM talks SRM server through the matrix of configuration manager and I expect actually has nothing to do with the real task of replication in celerra manager, im thinking it should be possible to use RM to kickoff between the Celerra replication and still have happy and work SRM.

I'm way off here?...  If someone knows the answer to this... Please let me know... It would be much appreciated.

    Thank you

    Hello

I write this as an EMC employee

«Replication Manager / SE, I read integrates with Virtual Center, puts the virtual machines in snapshot mode (a kind of like vcb) then launches the replication to ensure that everything is in order, I also thought with the VMware tools with 3.5 module update 2 part tools VSS should quiese SQL and make sure that its happy before the virtual machine put in snapshot mode.»

That's right – Replication Manager is able to do two things - integration with VMware Virtual Center to snapshots by car from Virtual Machines residing in a VMFS volume built on iSCSI.

Following the call in Virtual Center agent proxy Manager VMFS Replication called Celerra to take the local snapshot. This snapshot can then be mounted to another ESX for backup (if this ESX host is running version ESX console with a backup agent installed in this console - backups for flat file VMDK) or simply to allow the machine virtual administrator to navigate in the data store is presented as a wink on the recovery of ESX host to activate the Virtual Machine defined in full file recovery. The vocation of VMware SnapShot Manager provides a consistent point machine to return where the virtual machine recovery fails

Replication Manager can create replicas consistent application for such Applications a SQL and Oracle if these scores of applications based on VMFS volumes rather than posing as Raw Device Mappings. The caveat with this is that the volume presented to the Virtual Machine in question must be devoted to this Virtual Machine and a single VMDK file can be built on the VMFS volume) so you would need a volume for your logs, your database, etc. We call this use of replicas of "Virtual disk" case - confused I know

    So two use cases

VMFS machine restoration for a set of Virtual Machines and integrated individual application VMFS volume consistent replicas for specific virtual machines with their scores of applications built on individually provisioned VMFS volumes

I don't know why you want to use Replication Manager kickoff the SRM associated Celerra replication. the SRM model is basically continuous replication - i.e. an algorithm runs to determine to what extent the site of DR comes from the primary and push any data the differences across the wire. The bandwidth used for this can be strangled and demand

Replication Manager leads Celerra replication tends to be regular and non-continuous

With regard to your query on the integration of Replication Manager and SRM. I prefer to think to Replication manager and SRM for the moment be tolerant to each other. Replication Manager solutions I have just described are focused on the side backup and restoration of the entire equation of continuity of business and focused around that at the local level, so that the RS is more oriented toward the recovery room disaster

I don't see that going forward, there will be more integration and I hope that Replication Manager may in the future serve to ensure consistency of the request as a level of additional service in the comprehensive proposal of SRM

When you start start pressing F8 until you get the Windows startup options.  Then try "Last known good configuration" see if that helps.  If this does not work, try to F * then try to go to Safe Mode.  If those who do not help, I would start with your XP CD to recovery mode and run "chkdsk/r" then "sfc/scannow".  QQ learn manage!

  • MOVI with Mix AD and LDAP authentication?

    Hi all

Is it possible to configure VCS for authentication in mode mix MOVI.

I have a situation in which some MOVI users are not in the ad.

Now I woul like authenticate this MOVI via the local ldap on the highway-VCS database.

Because I put all subarea them and area on the VCS-E with "verify the credentials" and authenticate the user MOVI via AD, works fine, no problem, but now I have the problem with the no user AD Movi.

    Anbody has any idea?

    any input appreciated.

    Best regards

    Georg

    Hi, George,

It is possible but you need to use 2 separate VCS - C to do, where VCS - 1 c is attached to the AD domain and configured for NTLM for Video Movi/Jabber authentication requests for commissioning, and where the other VCS - C is configured to use the authentication of local/LDAP database for Video Movi/Jabber provisioning requests.

In addition, you need to create two separate records in MSD Provisioning directory, where a single folder houses users of the AD and the other folder is home users not AD.

Finally, you must configure the server setting internal on video Movi/Jabber, so that the AD users get their configuration in the VCS - C service which is configured for NTLM, while users non AD get their provisioning for the non - NTLM VCS - C configuration.

Now, if you bring a VCS-E in the mixture, so that the two AD and no AD users will be connecting via VCS-E, this will get a lot more complicated, since you would have to somehow ensure that provisioning a user AD request gets by proxy via NTLM - activated VCS - c while queries for configuration of users not AD get by proxy through the non - NTLM VCS - C. This could be done with smart search rules, but that requires that you have a URI scheme for your users to provisioning, which allows you to determine whether or not a request for service comes from a user AD.

In summary, it is possible, but it adds a significant administrative burden and would probably complicate troubleshooting a bit if it is still necessary and I strongly suggest you try instead of getting all the user provisioning in AD if possible.
