VDI licensing

Hello, I recently woke up Windows Server R2 VDI host 2012. I have 5 users test currently, they use Windows 7 Enterprise for each workstation.  They are all access to the VDI server within the company at the present time.

With regard to the licenses of the SA, VDA, client access licenses remote can be confusing.

If I buy the VDA licenses for them, the way I read some FAQ I shouldn't away from CAL, is that correct, or I read incorrectly?

This issue is beyond the scope of this site (for consumers) and to be sure, you get the best (and fastest) reply, we have to ask either on Technet (for IT Pro) or MSDN (for developers)

    Hello

Basically, my question is if a standard of vCenter license can manage hosts with VDI and Non - VDI workload without violating the EULA.

For a more detailed explanation, please see below:

Thank you very much in advance

    concerning

    Luis

    ----

    Environment:

    -vSphere 4

    -Cisco UCS

Customer has acquired the following licenses:

-1 vCenter server standard (Cisco OEM)

-vSphere Enterprise Plus for 16 cores (Cisco OEM)

also, as VDI will run on the VI client thus acquired a set of 5 view come with:

    -1 Server vCenter for VDI

-See the first 5 Add - on licenses (200)

-vSphere Enterprise more to View 5 (200)

The current implementation has a unique vCenter and 8 blades, divided into two groups:

-6 guests for Admin more application VMs

    -2 VMS VDI host

    Scenario has):

-If we use the vCenter VDI license, according to the "View4LicensingFAQ.PDF" of VMware, support Non - VDI running in a VDI VI is not allowed (see below)

Q: can I run other workloads from server on the vSphere which is included in the view?

A: No. vSphere and vCenter beam view components are limited to desktop deployments.  A desktop virtual machine is defined as a virtual machine that is running the following operating systems:

Windows 95/98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista business, or Windows Vista business, Windows 7.

The only exception to this rule are the elements that make up the virtualized infrastructure Fund (View Manager, vCenter Server, a Broker for the connections and/or management and tools used for Virtual Machine (s) of Office ESX hosted within an operating system of a server performance monitoring only).  Download the EULA here for details http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/.

    Scenario B):

-If we use the Standard-vCenter vCenter license, according to the "View4LicensingFAQ.PDF" of VMware this is not recommended (see below)

Can Q: you the customer mix vSphere hosts who have licenses from the beams of the view and vSphere license via vSphere la carte?

R: a mixed environment is not recommended because there is risk of workloads server live-migration of a cluster of vSphere (via VMware vMotion™) in a scenario of disaster recovery for a license to view vSphere host, what would constitute a violation of the EULA. Guests are asked to keep their separate environments or buy to the map view to entitle the deployment of a mixed environment vSphere, vCenter, and licenses.

Leaving apart from the facts that:

-View licenses need to be reclassified from vSphere5 in vSphere4

-The client may have bought more than necessary licenses

    My thoughts are:

    • -I have not read anywhere that the use of a Standard-vCenter to cover the VDI and the workload of Non - VDI is not possible at the technical level.
    • -I'm not 100% sure that it is aligned with the EULA
    • -Similar situation for ESXi hosts accommodation VDI VMs licenses

If you use the view bundle vCenter only VDI workloads are allowed.    If you use vCenter who bought outside of the whole of the display, you can run anything you want with it.

  • Microsoft licenses in sight?

    Hello

I'm still fairly new to the communities here, but I'm enjoying learning!

I work for a company good enough size in Massachusetts, with satellite offices more that I like to think. We will build a new data center to the end of the year... most importantly, we will have in addition to the corporate office, in fact. We will have a lot of users, and we are now strongly considering going with an approach to view + Thin client rather than deploy many heavy customers and deal with it in this way. I still have to attend some training courses to get a better idea to see, but before taking this road there is a fundamental question that my boss wants to answer.

Quick backstory: I just got the initial estimate from our supplier and in addition to the license first View they are recommending that we buy a Vista or XP Enterprise Desktop license centralized for each seat of the thin client. Understandable, of course. However, we have a ton of licensing of retail XP Professional sitting in stock at the moment is currently not, and my boss would like to see the initial deployment done with great consideration cost.

    So, my question:

If I wanted to ride with persistent pools for my users, could I have just set up a VD for each user individually using these licenses XP retail and assign them to users via AD? Or do I have to buy the licenses of centralized office, make a model pool and supply of desktop computers?

Thanks in advance and please feel free to ask me questions to clarify; If I use the terms wrong please to tell

If they are licenses to detail that counts among the approaches to XP for VDI license as long as its where 1:1, each user is the single primary user.

  • ESX Server timed out when I try to enter the license server in the CR

    Hi all

I have a problem with the addition of two new ESX servers in our virtual Center.

Let me give you a brief overview:

We have 5 servers ESX and virtual Center Server.

All servers are in a single Cluster (Cluster 01)

Now, we want to use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and for this reason, we bought another 2 servers (blades).

I installed from scratch with ESX 3.5 Update 4.

I did a second Cluster in our VC (Group 02) and add the two.

I configured the network settings and storage, everything went very well, shoot when I want to point to our license server, whenever I get an error message from our VC. Operation timed out and my settings when not accepted. No matter if I get the IP address or FULL domain name. BUT I can ping our server to ESX Server licenses, so I'm not sure if this is some sort of DNS issue or not.

Another note: our first 5 ESX servers where ESX Server Standard license.

Our new ESX servers where an ESX Server VDI license. I used the CD to install ESX normal, because I have not found any VDI install special files.

I see all licenses in the Administration view in our VC, so I think our license file is not corrupted.

    Things I've done so far:

Renewal of license, start stop server, esx Server license installed twice from scratch

I have no more ideas, I hope someone could help me with this problem.

According to your image, you have 0 agent licenses virtual centre-left to allocate to new hosts.  What might happen, is that the agent is not properly installed on the new servers.  Connect to ESX servers.  Make sure that you can test the virtual Center by domain name server FULL and hostname, not only by intellectual property.  From your RESUME, ping your esx server fqdn and the host name.

Also, check the file/etc/hosts on your esx server and make sure that the entries are tiny.

VDA and the use of the student

    Hello

I'm trying to find what options to license our University has for VDI student use.   With 2000 students we would really here the year 2000 VDA licenses.  Are there other options out there?

This license information can be found here:

  • Is it possible deploy Windows 7 floating - Linked clone pool for 10 VDIs and licensing through KMS?

    Hi all

I would like to build a floating - linked clone pool for 10 VDIs and lincense them using KMS.

I read that the KMS solution is valid when you deploy more than 25 VDIs but if my VDIs are rebuild a few times during the day, why KMS does not work for me?

I have an installed KMS and I think the job properly, but when I build my Windws 7 pool for each computer I always get this message:

"Discover the State of the agent (16) composer initialization error: impossible to activate the license (waited 1275 seconds).

If anyone can tell me what I should do to fix.

    Thank you

What I do for this is to simply begin your pool with 26 machines and all have power upward.  Then just make sure all active and then reduce it down to the size you want.  Your environment might suffer a little performance while you do this, but it does the job for you.  A tip - don't forget to make offices and BONES.

  • Requirements of licensing the VDI/VDM

    Hi guys,.

I am looking for some costs associated with the implementation of a VDI solution. The proposed configuration would require 2 servers VDM (1 physical security in the DMZ, 1 virtual VDM server sitting on local ESX connections), 3 x 4 socket ESX nodes (VI3 Ent), 200VDI XP, physical VC (W2003, complete SQL2005). AD and the RSA already exists. Are the licenses I propose that we must OK or have I missed something. Should I absolutely VDM 2 licenses?

    Virtual Center W2003 x 86 STD 1

    Virtual Center SQL2005 1

VDM DC VMware VDM server 1

VMware VDM VDM 1 Security Server

ESX VMware VI3 Enterprise, Inc. HA, DRS 6 servers

    Desktop XP 200 CAL VDI

    Thanks in advance

Your license is all wrong, I'm afraid, but easily fixed.

VDM itself is licensed by concurrent user and you can buy packs of different startup in sets of 10 or 100. You can run as many servers VDM as you want (you'll allow good OS Windows) to run your configuration. Now if this environment VMware will run only desktops you can also get all of the included ESX licenses, regardless of the number of ESX hosts you will run.

    Check

    http://www.VMware.com/products/VDI/howtobuy.html

However, be aware that VDM3 will be soon released and the license model changes a little. I suggest that you contact VMware or a VMware partner and get them to help you. Or go here if you have any specific questions. But you'll want to consider the type of license you want to VDM3. I would say more, but I'm not sure what is public.

  • Bloomberg, the licenses and VDI

Looks like that for some time someone commented on the subject, and we recently bought the software. So now is the perfect time to open the discussion up on this.

We bought Bloomberg Professional, with their keyboards of Bloomberg and all. There was a debate between us, licenses and technical support as to whether or not we can legally run this in a VMware environment. In our tests, we have proven that the software works. We have yet to receive the keyboards, but we don't anticipate any problems here. The only problem we have is with the installation of licenses.

Bloomberg tells us, all the legal issues, to run in a VMware environment, we must have some degree of persistence of the user profile. The reason for this is because the license information are updated in the register upon activation of the software at regular intervals while it is running. If persistence is not enabled, then reactivate the software every time a machine is regenerated (which would require a call to Bloomberg) or enter the registry key before the machine is updated. We say Bloomberg that we do not want to use persistence because it is a laboratory of the student, and we prefer to allow students to update the machines with a reboot if necessary to allow some level of self-service if a machine is rendered unusable by the student population. Bloomberg was less useful to find a solution to make the software to adapt to our environment.

So apart from writing a service customized to manage the registry keys for each slot machine license and archive/restore these disc in another location according to the needs, someone come to a resolution that allows the software to Bloomberg to run in a lab environment non-persistent VMware without authorization of the headache? For us, we will be deployed in kiosk mode, logging in via the MAC address of our P25 Wyse thin clients. If we cannot come to a resolution, probably deploy as a persistent pool and store the license under each user logon.

Thoughts or comments from those of you who have dealt with this?

    Thank you

    Jonathan

So, with the lack of support from Bloomberg on the issue, the laboratory decided buy a PC and install by recommendation of Bloomberg. We are not really satisfied with this solution, but the decision was made.

  • VDI DR licenses

    Hi all

How the dismissal of view works with the following approach of DR as shown below, we can re - use license or purchase it separately has held the positions of work will be turned off.

    • Duplicate sites with two brokers view and desktop backend infrastructure (completely unrelated to the other) at each site

    • Copy the template from site A to site B on a regular basis

    • Redeploy the same pools at the other site based on this model

    • Linked clones are put in service but not star Ted

    • Thinapp allows to publish applications using application virtualization

    Thank you

    Vishal

View of the horizon can be dismissed in 2 ways depending on how you bought, "connected at the same time office" or "named users".

    Probably you have the first.

In this scenario you need not the new licenses since a user will be only connected to a desktop computer at a time.

  • Licenses

I have a question about the Microsoft licenses for a network that I plan for the company that I work:
    * Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition
for our users work stations will be thin clients running ChromeOS)
Our users will use the client to access their virtual machines (VDI) running windows OS.

We already have a license for the server operating system, but we are not sure 100% of the necessary licenses for the computers of users and connections.
I understand that we have to buy for each user:
    * A CAL RDS to access the machine VDI
    * A license of operating system for the Windows operating system that is installed on the machine VDI

Except for the licenses of applications, are there other licenses that we have to buy in order to allow users to connect to their virtual machines?

    Thank you very much

  • VWorkspace Reporting and licensing

    Hello

I'm trying to find out how many people have connected to VDI over a certain period. It comes to the current report. Manager, it will use to determine how many licenses we need and what is the use (Sessions, licenses). For the moment, I know people are connected, but I don't know how to put together the date.

Another question is if I go to the Management Console > license file I see 0 In Use licenses even though people are connected. Is this supposed to show the use of the current license?

    Hello Dejan,

I suggest to study further why it shows 0 licenses and has nothing to do with M & D. M & d works correctly, you farm should behave properly first. You receive error popups when you access licenses screen? 0 sessions/licenses may indicate a malfunction of the broker for connections. For starters, you can check if the quest Connection Broker, database management and the registry services are running. Broker listed in the GPMC vWorkspace, rentals, location 1, list of connection brokers?

How to install a dual boot on my laptop system. There the Vista license on it, I'll buy a disc of windows 7 retail school, also I want to use vmware or virtual box to have windows 7 Windows 7 for experimentation (because in to school for computers). So, how can I configure my computer to ask what os I want to run from the black screen and I have 7 on a virtual machine to play with and what having a vdi with my os to travel around with on a USB?

Please see the following article with useful information about dual-boot:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/can-I-have-more-than-one-operating-system-on-my-computer-multiboot

You will not be able to virtualize Windows 7 because the license would be already physically license on the host on a partition.

Another question, you must make sure that the copy of that school license is not an upgrade. You cannot install an upgrade on a partition or a virtual machine.
